Faithful pays homage, mourn Benedict XVI at funeral led by Pope Francis. [Photos]

Advertisements

Pope Francis led the funeral of his predecessor Benedict XVI on Thursday in front of tens of thousands of mourners in St Peter’s Square, an event unprecedented in modern times.

Scarlet-clad cardinals, dignitaries and thousands of priests and nuns from around the world gathered to say goodbye to the German theologian, who stunned the Catholic church in 2013 by becoming the first pontiff in six centuries to resign.

For the first time in modern history, the papal funeral was led by a sitting pope, Francis, who delivered the homily in Italian as part of a multi-lingual service with a Latin mass.

“Benedict … may your joy be complete as you hear his (God’s) voice, now and forever!” the pontiff said in tribute to his predecessor, who died on Saturday aged 95.

At the end of the service, Francis made the sign of the cross over Benedict’s simple cypress wood coffin and bowed his head, before pallbearers carried it into St. Peter’s Basilica.

Benedict will be interred in a tomb in the Vatican Grottoes beneath the basilica where John Paul II’s body lay before being moved for his beatification in 2011.

The Polish pontiff was made a saint in 2014.

In a private ceremony after Thursday’s funeral, Benedict’s coffin was tied with a red ribbon and placed in a zinc coffin, before being sealed and put inside a wood casket, according to the Vatican.

Coins and medals minted during his papacy and a written text describing his pontificate, sealed in a metal cylinder, were placed alongside his body.

Paying homage
Born Joseph Ratzinger, the ex-pope had not been a head of state for a decade, but world leaders including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni were among those in attendance.

Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen, 90, also attended after being granted permission by a court to travel following his arrest last year under the city’s national security law.

An estimated 50,000 people were in St. Peter’s Square for the funeral, according to police, many of them having queued up since dawn in thick fog to bid farewell.

“Benedict is a bit like my father, so I had to pay homage to him,” said Cristina Grisanti, a 59-year-old from Milan, who hailed the former pope’s “purity, his candor, his mildness.”

An estimated 195,000 people had already paid their respects earlier in the week when the body lay in state at the basilica.

Many Germans – some in lederhosen – were in the crowd on Thursday as church bells rang out across Benedict’s native Germany at the funeral’s culmination.

“We owe him so much. We want to show that we stand behind him,” said Benedikt Rothweiler, 34, who came from Aachen with his family.

“He always accepted everything the way God wants it. This is a good example for us humans.”

Two popes
Benedict was a brilliant theologian but a divisive figure who alienated many Catholics with his staunch defense of conservative doctrine on issues such as abortion.

His eight years as head of the worldwide Catholic Church was also marked by crises, from in-fighting within the Vatican to the global scandal of clerical sex abuse and its cover-up.

When he quit, Benedict said he no longer had the “strength of mind and body” necessary for the task, retiring to a quiet life in a monastery in the Vatican gardens.

His death brought an end to an unprecedented situation of having two “men in white” – he and Francis – living in the tiny city-state.

He and Francis, an Argentine Jesuit, were said to get on well, but Benedict’s later interventions meant he stayed a standard-bearer for conservative Catholics who did not like his successor’s more liberal stance.

The last time a pope presided over the funeral of his predecessor was in 1802, when Pius VII led the ceremony for Pius VI.

Pius VI died in 1799 in exile, a prisoner of France, and was buried in Valence. His successor had his remains exhumed and brought back for a papal funeral at St Peter’s.

European royals
Beyond St Peter’s, many of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics had been expected to follow the funeral proceedings on television and the radio.

In the majority Catholic Philippines, churches held requiem masses for the former pontiff, including at Malolos Cathedral near the capital Manila.

“This is an unexplainable feeling to witness this,” said Cherry Castro, 67.

Portugal declared a national day of mourning on Thursday, while in Italy, flags were flown at half-mast on public buildings.

The only official delegations were from Germany and Italy.

But other dignitaries, including Belgian and Spanish royals, the presidents of Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Slovenia and Togo, and the premiers of the Czech Republic, Gabon and Slovakia among others attended in a personal capacity.

Terror group supporters injures 31, turn Paris into warfront.

Advertisements

Violent clashes broke out for a second day in Paris on Saturday between police and supporters of the PKK terrorist group, resulting in at least 31 French police officers injured, police chief Laurent Nunez said on Saturday. (Watch Video Here)

Having gathered at the central Place de la Republique at around 2:00 p.m. local time (1300 GMT), thousands of supporters of the terrorist group then marched to the Boulevard du Temple chanting pro-PKK slogans and carrying posters of the terrorist group’s so-called leaders. (Watch Video Here)

They then ripped off the paving stones and threw them at the police, nearby houses, and shops. The attackers also turned the scene into a battlefield with fireworks and sparklers, destroying the bus stops. (Watch Video Here)

Speaking to local broadcaster BFM TV, Nunez said at least 31 security personnel were injured, along with one protester. There had been 11 arrests, he added. (Watch Video Here)

The intervention by police at the scene was rather limited and they occasionally used tear gas against the attackers.

On Friday, a 69-year-old gunman in Paris opened fire, killing at least three people and injuring three others. He was placed in custody after he fired gunshots on Enghien Street in the city center. (Watch Video Here)

Suspected racist motivations behind the attack will be investigated, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said. (Watch Video Here)

Following the incident, supporters of the PKK terrorist organization wounded at least six police officers in Paris on Friday, according to local media.

In its more than 40-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and European Union, has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.

Türkiye has been frequently voicing concerns over European countries’ tolerance toward the PKK, however, the terrorist organization still maintains a strong presence in the region, being able to hold rallies and engage in recruitment activities. (Watch Video Here)

The EU’s law enforcement agency Europol classified the PKK as an “ethno-nationalist” and “separatist” (Watch Video Here) terrorist group, saying in its 2020 and 2021 reports that the group still uses European countries for propaganda, recruitment and fundraising activities, even though in most of it is officially banned.

Also, supporters of the PKK terrorist group on Saturday disrupted peace and clashed with police in London. (Watch Video Here)

Gathering in front of the French Embassy in London, a group of the terror group’s supporters chanted slogans against Türkiye and France over Friday’s shooting in Paris.

The terror group supporters, also marched toward the Turkish Embassy in London, carrying banners that read “Freedom for Öcalan,” referring to jailed terrorist ringleader Abdullah Öcalan, who is serving a life sentence. (Watch Video Here)

The protesters also caused traffic disruptions as they marched through central London on a day when people rushed around for last-minute Christmas shopping.

When they arrived in front of the Turkish Embassy, a clash between terror supporters and police took place after one of them threw a most likely stone toward the embassy building.

They also chanted slogans including “revenge” and “no justice, no peace.”

Emmy repeat winners ‘Succession,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ and first timers.

Advertisements

The Emmy Awards spread its accolades to repeat winners and several first-timers in a glorious ceremony on Monday. While the HBO drama “Succession” and comedy “Ted Lasso” bagged the top honors again, a “Squid Game” actor took a major acting prize home as his first.

“Succession” was named best drama series, an award the HBO show had won in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted its production schedule. The show, which secured four trophies overall, tells the story of the wealthy and back-stabbing Roy family as members jockey for power.

Advertisements

Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso” also was a repeat winner, claiming best comedy for the second straight year for its tale of an American football coach leading a British soccer team. Its stars Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein were second-time winners of best comedy actor and supporting actor.

Likewise, voters honored “Euphoria” star Zendaya as best drama actress and Jean Smart of “Hacks” as best comedy actress. It was the second win for each in those categories.

One newcomer to break through was Lee Jung-jae, who was named best drama actor for his role in South Korean thriller “Squid Game.” The dystopian story about cash-strapped contestants risking their lives for wealth became a global sensation after its release on Netflix a year ago.

The actor thanked the team behind “Squid Game” for “making realistic problems we all have to face come to life so creatively on the screen.”

Advertisements

The most-lauded show of the night was HBO’s “The White Lotus.” It won 10 awards including best-limited series and acting trophies for Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett. Those wins helped HBO and streaming service HBO Max lead all other networks with 38 honors overall.

Host and “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson kept a celebratory tone throughout the show, saying it was a time to appreciate one of the world’s favorite pastimes.

“What would we do without television, read books?” he joked, before joining dance numbers to theme songs ranging from classic sitcom “Friends” to current sci-fi hit “Stranger Things.”

Winners largely steered clear of politics or world events. One exception was “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong, who joked that it was a big week for “successions,” referring to King Charles taking over the British throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth.

Advertisements

“I’m not saying we’re more legitimate in our position than he is. We’ll leave that to other people,” Armstrong said.

British “Lasso” actor Goldstein, who plays foul-mouthed but soft-hearted soccer legend Roy Kent, said he was going to try not to swear after his profanity-laced remarks were cut off in Britain when he won last year, preventing his family from hearing them.

Then he added: “Mum, Dad … I f*cking love you.”

Singer Lizzo earned an Emmy award for competition series for “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.” The musician said that as a little girl she had always wanted television to feature “someone fat like me, black like me, beautiful like me.”

Advertisements

“I’m going to go back and tell a little Lizzo something … you’re going to be that person,” she said.

Among other winners, Michael Keaton was named lead actor in limited series for playing a small-town doctor who becomes addicted to painkillers in “Dopesick.”

Thousands forced out of home in Southern China “for floods’ sake”

Advertisements

As the last 60 years’ heaviest rains hit southern China, tens of thousands of locals have been told to evacuate their houses due to the threat of major floods.

The manufacturing hub of Guangdong suspended classes, office work and public transport amid rising waters and the threat of landslides.

In the neighboring province of Jiangxi, almost 500,000 people have suffered damage to their homes and have had their lives uprooted.

Advertisements

In Zhejiang province, a little further north, rescue crews in inflatable boats brought out residents trapped in their homes in inundated villages.

China regularly experiences flooding during the summer months, most frequently in central and southern areas that tend to receive the most rainfall. This year’s flooding is the worst in decades in some areas and comes on top of strict COVID-19 regulations that have strangled travel, employment and ordinary life in much of the country

China’s worst floods in recent years were in 1998 when more than 2,000 people died and almost 3 million homes were destroyed, mostly along the Yangtze, China’s mightiest river.

The government has invested heavily in flood control and hydroelectric projects such as the massive Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze.

Globally, more intense tropical storms are on the rise as a result of climate change, leading to increased flooding that threatens lives, crops and groundwater.

Photos: Magnitude 6.1 shakes Afghanistan, over 1,000 recorded death.

Advertisements

According to the Afghan disaster management authority, at least 1000 dead with over 600 wounded after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit Afghanistan’s Paktika province on Wednesday.

Information remained scarce on the magnitude 6.1 temblor, but it comes as the international community has largely left Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover of the country last year amid the chaotic withdrawal of the U.S. military from the longest war in its history.

That likely will complicate any relief efforts for this country of 38 million people.

Footage from Paktika province near the Pakistan border showed victims being carried into helicopters to be airlifted from the area. Images widely circulating online from the province showed destroyed stone houses, with residents picking through clay bricks and other rubble.

France’s Emmanuel Macron inaugurated for another 5-year term.

Advertisements

French President Emmanuel Macron was inaugurated for a second term on Saturday after being reelected, vowing to first take action to avoid any further escalation of Russia’s war in Ukraine before going on to focus on promoting France and Europe on the world stage.

Macron was reelected for five years on April 24 in a runoff that saw him beat out far-right rival Marine Le Pen.

“The time ahead will be that of resolute action for France and for Europe,” Macron said. He promised to “first take action to avoid any escalation following Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.”

Macron vowed to “take action relentlessly with a goal, which is to be a more independent nation, to live better and to build our own French and European responses to the century’s challenges.”

Macron also promised to find a “fair method” to govern the country and ease social tensions by making the government and parliament work together with unions, associations and other people from the political, economic, social and cultural world.

For a president at ease speaking for hours on end, Macron’s speech was surprisingly short – and handwritten. But afterward, he took his time to shake hands, exchange cheek kisses and chat individually with scores of guests.

While he presided over strict lockdowns and COVID-19 vaccine mandates as the pandemic swept through France, most restrictions have now been lifted and there was no sign of masks or social distancing at the inauguration.

The event seemed unusually child-friendly for French presidential ceremonies, with several dignitaries bringing their children – and at least two in baby strollers. Macron, 44, has no children of his own but has step-children and grandchildren, some of whom were there.

About 500 guests were invited to the ceremony. They came primarily from the world of politics, though also included actors, health care workers, military officers and former Presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy. Most of those who received a coveted invite to the event were white men in suits, despite a growing push for diversity in French politics.

At his arrival in the reception hall of the Elysee, Macron winked at his wife, Brigitte Macron.

Advertisements

The president of the Constitutional Council read out the results of the election and Macron was given the necklace of Grand Master of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest distinction, before making his speech.

He then went to the gardens of the Elysee palace and listened to 21 cannon shots being fired from the Invalides plaza to mark the event, in line with tradition.

Macron also reviewed the military. Troops present at the ceremony included part of the crew of the Monge, the French navy’s second-biggest ship that is key to France’s nuclear deterrent. It was notably used for the tests of France’s nuclear-capable submarine-launched M51 missiles.

The symbol can be seen as a show of force at times when France is deeply involved in efforts to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine, including via sending truck-mounted cannons and other heavy weapons.

Macron’s second term will formally start on May 14.

US protests potential Roe vs Wade abortion rollback | Photos.

Advertisements

Thousands of people have protested outside the US Supreme Court against a potential rollback of abortion rights in the United States, after a draft decision to overturn the nation’s landmark Roe v Wade ruling was leaked.

Politico magazine first reported Monday evening on the Supreme Court’s majority draft opinion to strike down the precedent-setting 1973 decision, which set out a woman’s right to an abortion in the country.Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed on Tuesday that the draft was “authentic”, but he stressed it was not final and ordered an investigation into what he said was an “egregious” leak.

While the abortion issue inflames strongly held beliefs in the US, a majority of Americans support Roe v Wade. According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted late last month, 54 percent of people think the Supreme Court should uphold the ruling, compared with 28 percent who said it should be overturned.

Outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the number of protesters denouncing the draft ruling vastly outnumbered those in favour. Al Jazeera spoke to demonstrators about what the potential end of Roe v Wade means to them.

Emily Cramer, 32, professor at Howard University, mother of two

“I learned about this leaked decision and I am afraid and feeling morally dejected. And after the past five years, I’ve learned the only thing that makes me feel better is protesting.

“The outcome of this decision is the undoing of years and years of women’s rights. Women should be able to time their pregnancies in a way that benefits their lives and their health. I’m afraid of what this means for my children and millions of others in the future.”

Amy Marden, 37, lawyer from Wisconsin, currently living in Virginia

“A friend of mine sent me a news story – a Politico news story – last night and I called my mom and we cried. My mom was out here fighting for abortion rights in the ’70s.

“Honestly, if we don’t have precedent in our country, we don’t have rights. None of our rights are safe.”

Eesha Bhave (left), 27, from Wayne, New Jersey and Krithika

Harish: “I’m here because of the decision that was leaked last night. We are imminently about to lose the right to safe and legal abortions in this country. And I am angered, outraged and disappointed.

“It’s inconceivable to me that my future daughter might have less rights than 50 years ago.”

Bhave: “After [the] news was leaked, I thought about all the people who won’t have that choice – whether to have a child or not.

“It’s just shameful they are trying to take away [the] long-held right of women to be able to have control over their bodies.”

Hayden Laye, 16, from Walhalla, South Carolina

“We are out here celebrating what could be the end of Roe v Wade and what could be the end of the greatest human rights violation in human history.”

Steve Corson, 65, and from Fredonia, Arizona

“I am pro-life all the way and I am just so happy the Supreme Court is finally going to get rid of Roe v Wade.

“I am pro-life from a Christian standpoint and a natural standpoint. None of the other creatures kill their babies in the womb. Human beings are the only ones who do that.”

Holger Rune wins BMW open ‘sequel to’ Zandschulp’s retirement | Photos.

Advertisements

Danish teenager Holger Rune won the BMW Open final on Sunday to claim his first ATP Tour title after Botic van de Zandschulp was forced to retire.

The eighth-seeded van de Zandschulp led 4-3 in the opening set — with Rune serving at 40-15 — when he withdrew due to chest pains.

“This was probably the worst way to win a final,” said Rune, who celebrated his 19th birthday on Friday. “I was obviously expecting a very tough match and he came out very strong. I just wish him all the best, a speedy recovery, and we all just hope to see him back on the court very soon.”

Rune, who stunned top-seeded Alexander Zverev in the second round, did not drop a set at the clay-court tournament. He also ousted Jiri Lehecka, Emil Ruusuvuori and Oscar Otte on his way to his first final.

The 70th-ranked Rune became the third youngest champion in Munich after Guillermo Perez-Roldan won at age 17 in 1987 and successfully defended his title a year later.

Rune is the fifth first-time winner on the ATP Tour this year.

“I’m super happy, of course,” Rune said. “As I said, not the way I want it to end, but if I look through the week, what a week! … To be playing here in Munich and winning my first ATP title in front of such a brilliant crowd, I couldn’t really ask for more.”

Madrid Open: Danielle Collins beat Monica Piug to reach Round 2 | Photos.

Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins won the last eight games to advance to the second round of the Madrid Open with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Monica Puig on Friday.

Puig, the Olympic gold medalist in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, is returning to action following shoulder and bicep surgeries. The 28-year-old Puerto Rican appeared in only four matches since her first major surgery in 2019.

“You never know what to expect when someone’s been out for a while, and they’ve been working on some things,” the sixth-seeded Collins said. “You don’t know what type of game style that they’re going to play, so it was a little bit tricky trying to anticipate what she was going to do. I think she played at a super-high level, especially in the first set, and gave me a lot of challenges, so I really needed to just find my rhythm on the court.”

Collins also missed matches this season because of injury, including a neck ailment that she picked up during her quarterfinal run in Miami.

“When you go a little period where you aren’t playing some matches, you almost feel a little bit rusty,” the 28-year-old American said. “I just needed to be patient and try to get myself back into it.”

Another American to advance was 12th-seeded Jessica Pegula, who beat Camila Giorgi 7-5, 2-6, 7-5. Madison Keys was eliminated 7-6 (8), 3-6, 4-6 against fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari.

Seventh-seeded Garbine Muguruza, one of the home-crowd favorites in the Spanish capital, defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-2, while Leylah Fernández, the U.S. Open runner-up last year, beat Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

Just in: Cart pushers to join Ogun state waste management operations

Advertisements

Few weeks after the ban of their operations, Ogun State Government said it would incorporate cart-pushers into its new waste management reforms for optimal performance.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment/Chief Executive Officer of the State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Mr. Ola Oresanya, disclosed this during a meeting with leaders of Cart-Pushers, Scrap Vendors and Community Development Associations (CDA), in Abeokuta.

Advertisements

Represented by the Director, Operation, OGWAMA, Mr. Akinbode Sofela, Oresanya said the state government decided to incorporate these people into its new waste management reforms instead of pushing them into unemployment markets and offer them new opportunities through its structured Private Service Providers (PSP) Scheme to work as loaders with steady income.

He added that some of them would be employed as community recyclers in its planned Community Recycling Centres across the 20 councils of the state.

“Under the new reforms, you will see that you have more than enough to do in the coming weeks. All you need to do now is to brace up for the new challenge as the Dapo Abiodun- led government is determined to change your narrative from environmental bad boys to good boys,” he said.

Oresanya called on them to cooperate with OGWAMA for the realisation of the new reforms, adding that anyone that fails to comply with the new order will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Ogun State Environmental Laws.

On the scrap vendors, the Special Adviser frowned on their poor attitude of scattering bagged waste in search of iron scraps, warning them to desist from such act or face arrest, saying their operation will soon be regulated to meet environmentally-accepted standards.

Reacting, the leader of the Cart Pushers, Hassan Amidu, pledged his members’ cooperation while Prince Olatunde Okunowo of the Makogi CDA, who spoke on behalf of the CDAs, called on residents of communities to stop patronising cart-pushers and scrap vendors for the successful implementation of the new waste management reforms.

Vietnam reelect Phu Trong as Party Leader

Advertisements

The 66-year-old has also steered the country’s robust response to the coronavirus pandemic which helped case numbers low, with just 35 deaths recorded.

Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong was re-elected Sunday — a victory that makes him the most powerful leader in decades — but his win was overshadowed by a serious coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Advertisements

Trong, a 76-year-old pro-China conservative who is rumoured to be in poor health, was given the nod after a week of closed-door talks at the twice-a-decade Communist Party congress. It will be his third term in office — a feat unprecedented in Vietnam’s modern era.

“On Sunday morning, comrade Nguyen Phu Trong was elected the General Secretary of the 13th Communist Party Central Committee,” the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Advertisements

Another stint in the top job for Trong is seen as a boost for his high-profile anti-corruption campaign, officially dubbed a “blazing furnace”, that has swept through the party, police and armed forces.

“We can expect Trong to continue to push” his campaign, which has claimed high-level party officials, including three Politburo members, said Carl Thayer, an emeritus professor at the University of New South Wales and an expert on Vietnam.

With graft widespread across all state sectors, Trong’s anti-corruption drive has largely proved popular with the Vietnamese public and many party members.

Advertisements

“We admired him for his determination and efforts to cleanse and purify the party,” said Nguyen Tran Trung, a long-time Communist Party member.

“Though not in good health, his presence in the leading position still scares bad cadres in the apparatus. He plays a major role in preserving the Communist Party,” the 78-year-old state official told AFP.

But for opponents of the regime, the last five years have been marked by escalating repression, according to rights groups and analysts, who warned Trong is likely to push forward with the crackdown during his third stint in power.

“We can expect a continuing crackdown on dissenting voices in the online social media,” Thayer told AFP.

Advertisements

Prisoners of conscience have doubled from 84 to 170 since the previous congress in 2016, according to Amnesty International, which says a large and growing proportion are jailed based on their expression online.

Trong, the first party general secretary to serve a third term since the “doi moi” era of economic reform began in 1986, has also served as president since 2018.

Advertisements

For the moment he remains so, but will step down later this year when the National Assembly appoints a replacement.

This is expected to be Nguyen Xuan Phuc, currently prime minister, who has focused on the country’s economic growth and integration, securing a number of international trade deals.

The congress in Hanoi had wanted to showcase that achievement, but a new cluster close to the capital last week spoilt the celebrations — forcing the meeting to close a day earlier than planned.

Advertisements

Authorities warned the outbreak was the most serious yet.

By Sunday, Vietnam had recorded nearly 1,800 cases of the coronavirus, nearly 200 of which were recorded in the past four days.

Authorities also confirmed the first case in Vietnam of the South African variant in an expert who arrived from the country in late December.

On Saturday the health ministry approved a vaccine made by AstraZeneca and continued to test thousands of people and lock down high-risk communities.

Advertisements

The final members of the country’s “four pillar” leadership are expected to be Pham Minh Chinh — who is in line to be prime minister -— and Vuong Dinh Hue to head the rubber stamp national assembly.

Chinh, 62, is head of the party’s important Central Organisation Commission, and has strong ties with the police.

#SILHOUETTE: Beware of online nudity – Adeboye warns.

Advertisements

They get naked against a blurred red background when Doja Cats’ song, Streets which was released in 2019 comes on.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG), has warned strongly against online nudity.

Adeboye’s warning comes as #SilhouetteChallenge continues to trend online.

The challenge sees ladies strip down while dancing to ‘Put Your Head On My Shoulder’ released in 1987 by Paul Anka.

Advertisements

However, Adeboye has tweeted, “What are the things that the flesh usually tells you to do? They are listed in Galatians 5:19-21 as you must have earlier read in today’s Bible text. You think that you can view a few pictures or videos on social media where someone is almost nude and it is okay.

“You are quenching the Spirit. That little window you give to indulge the flesh will strengthen it such that you would find yourself going back to those pictures/videos after that time. The Bible is very clear – don’t ever do anything that will quench the Spirit. Never!”

COVID-19: Gov’t contemplates fresh lockdown.

Advertisements

The Federal Government on Friday said it is contemplating a targeted lockdown in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna and major cities in Nigeria as the number of COVID-19 cases soars in the West African nation.

Although recoveries from the disease in the country have crossed 100,000, the Nigerian government is worried that with more than 127,000 infections, many citizens are not adhering to the safety protocols.

Advertisements

“Certainly, even if we are going to have a lockdown, it is not going to be a total lockdown. A couple of weeks back, we analysed the data and we identified the hotspot local government areas,” the National Incident Manager of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, said on Media programme, known to Noble Reporters Media.

“Mostly, the areas affected are the urban local governments in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Plateau. Even in most other states, it is the urban areas that are involved. So, if we are going to have any restrictions, it will be in these areas.

“The urban areas are the most affected and that is why we have these superspreaders and that is where we are going to target. We have analysed that and we are advising the states based on the data that these are the focused areas where these transmissions are more than the others.”

41 Million More Doses
The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire on Thursday noted that the country has secured additional 41 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines as the fight to tame the disease gathers steam.

Advertisements

However, the date of the vaccine’s delivery into the country remains unknown as vaccine manufacturers struggle to meet global demand in time.

“We do not have an exact date,” Dr Ehanire said on NoRM‘s known Media. “The date it comes out depends on when the manufacturers are able to deliver, and that is not something that any country can enforce at this time.”

Femi Falana reacts to appointment of new service chiefs.

Advertisements

According to the Senior Advocate, these laws have not been obeyed in the latest appointment of Service Chiefs by the president.

Human Rights Lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), says the nation has continued in its habit of operating under an atmosphere of impunity.

Speaking on the appointment of the new Service Chiefs, Mr. Falana said going on to appoint the new leaders of the Armed Forces without the confirmation by the two chambers of the National Assembly, constitutes a disregard for the rule of law.

Advertisements

Mr. Falana who was a guest on NoRM‘s known Media said the provisions within section 218 of the constitution empower the National Assembly to approve the appointment of the Service Chiefs.

According to the rights lawyer, the new service chiefs have only been nominated by the president and are awaiting confirmation by the legislators.

Advertisements

Falana was of the opinion that the whole essence of a presidential system of government is to ensure that there are checks and balances.

“Section 18 of the Armed Forces Act makes provision for both chambers of the National Assembly to approve the appointments of Service Chiefs.

“These laws were interpreted in the case of Festus Keyamo versus the President of Nigeria and the decision was rendered in 2018 by retired Justice Adamu Bello.

Advertisements

“The government did not appeal that judgment, in that case, the court held that by the combined effect of section 218 of the constitution and section 18 of the Armed Forces Act, the National Assembly shall approve or confirm the appointment of Service Chiefs.”

Repeated calls and appointment of new service chiefs
President Buhari on Wednesday accepted the immediate resignation of the former leaders of the armed forces and appointed new officers as replacements.

Major-General Leo Irabor replaced General Abayomi Olonisakin as Chief of Defence Staff; Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao replaced Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff; Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo replaced Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as Chief of Naval Staff; while General Ibrahim Attahiru replaced Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai as Chief of Army Staff.

The replacement of the Service Chiefs came after numerous calls for their sack over the increasing insecurity in the country.

Advertisements

But despite debates over the reason behind the replacement, the Presidency has maintained that it was considered the best decision for the country at the moment.

President Buhari appreciated the outgoing Service Chiefs for what he calls their “overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country,” wishing them well in their future endeavours.

Bigamy scandal: China executes former banker in bribes case.

Advertisements

Rights group Amnesty International estimates the country is the top executioner globally, with thousands executed and sentenced to death each year.

China on Friday executed a former top banker accused of taking $260 million worth of bribes, other forms of corruption and bigamy, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Advertisements

Lai Xiaomin, the former chairman of Huarong — one of China’s largest state-controlled asset management firms — was put to death by a court in the northern city of Tianjin, CCTV said.

“The amount of bribes received by Lai Xiaomin was extremely large, the crime’s circumstances were particularly serious and the social impact was particularly severe,” CCTV quoted the Chinese Supreme People’s Court as saying, which reviewed and approved the execution order.

The report did not specify how Lai was executed but said he was allowed to meet with close relatives before his death.

Advertisements

Chinese courts have a conviction rate of over 99 percent, and it is extremely rare for a death sentence to be overturned. The number of executions carried out annually is considered a state secret.

Lai was convicted and sentenced earlier this month. The Tianjin court ruled that he had shown “extreme malicious intent” and abused his position to obtain the vast sum.

He was also found guilty of bigamy after living with a woman “as man and wife for long periods” outside of his marriage and fathering illegitimate children.

Lai was alleged to have used his position to embezzle more than 25 million yuan ($3.8 million) in public funds between 2009 and 2018.

Advertisements

His downfall began in April 2018 as investigators removed him from his job and stripped him of his Communist Party position.

Several high-profile party officials and entrepreneurs have spectacularly fallen from grace in recent years as part of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption purge.

Dutch court orders shell to pay Nigerian farmers over oil spill.

Advertisements

Shell has always blamed all of the spills on sabotage and said it has cleaned up with due care where pollution has occurred.

A Dutch court on Friday ordered Shell to pay compensation in a long-running case brought by four Nigerian farmers who accuse the oil giant of causing widespread pollution.

After 13 years of legal wrangling, an appeals court in The Hague ruled that Shell’s Nigerian branch must pay out for oil spills on land in two villages.

It also held the Anglo-Dutch parent company Royal Dutch Shell liable for installing new pipeline equipment to prevent further devastating spills in the Niger Delta region.

Advertisements

The case, backed by the Netherlands arm of environment group Friends of the Earth, has dragged on so long that two of the Nigerian farmers have died since it was first filed in 2008.

“The court ruled that Shell Nigeria is liable for the damage caused by the spills. Shell Nigeria is sentenced to compensate farmers for damages,” judge Sierd Schaafsma said.

The amount of damages would be determined later, the court said. It did not specify how many of the four farmers would receive compensation.

The farmers first sued Shell in 2008 over pollution in their villages Goi, Oruma and Ikot Ada Udo, in southeastern Nigeria.

Advertisements

A lower court in the Netherlands found in 2013 that Shell should pay compensation for one leak but that Shell’s parent company could not be held liable in a Dutch court for the actions of its Nigerian subsidiary.

But in 2015 the Hague appeals court ruled that Dutch courts did indeed have jurisdiction in the case.

Advertisements

‘Environmental damage’
On Friday, the court ruled that Shell Nigeria must pay compensation for the leaks at Goi and Oruma.

“In the Uruma cases, Shell Nigeria and… Royal Dutch Shell are ordered to equip the pipeline with a leak detection system so that environmental damage can be limited in the future,” the court said.

Shell Nigeria should have shut down oil supplies on the day of the spill in the cases in Goi, it said.

Advertisements

The court said it needed more time to resolve the case of Ikot Ada Udo, saying that the leak was due to sabotage but it was not clear whether Shell could still be held liable for it, and for cleaning up.

“For the inhabitants of the Niger Delta it is crucial that their land is cleaned up and their lost crops and livelihoods are compensated by the guilty party: Shell,” Donald Pols of Friends of the Earth Netherlands said in a statement ahead of the case.

At a hearing last year lawyers for the farmers showed gushing and burning oil spills as well as villagers dragging their hands through water sources, their hands streaked with the substance afterwards.

Nigeria was the world’s ninth-largest oil producer in 2018, pumping out volumes valued at some $43.6 billion (37 billion euros), or 3.8 percent of total global production.

Advertisements

In a separate case in the Netherlands, the widows of four Nigerian activists executed by the military regime in the 1990s have accused Shell of complicity in their deaths.

Shell also faces a landmark legal bid to force it to meet emissions targets in the Paris climate accords, brought by several environmental groups in the Netherlands led by Friends of the Earth in 2019.

Biden’s Gov’t ‘relax’ weapons sale to UAE.

Advertisements

The Trump administration also authorised $290m worth of small munition sales to Saudi Arabia at the end of December of last year.

The United States is reviewing weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorised by former President Donald Trump, a move that Secretary of State Antony Blinken said was “typical” of a new administration.

In his first press briefing on Wednesday, Blinken said the review aims “to make sure that what is being considered is something that advances our strategic objectives and advances our foreign policy”.

“That’s what we’re doing at this moment,” he told reporters.

Advertisements

The Wall Street Journal first reported on Wednesday that the Biden administration has imposed a temporary freeze on billions of dollars in weapons sales to the two countries, including the sale of precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia and F-35 fighters to the UAE.

The move comes one week after Biden, who has promised to “reassess” Washington’s relationship with Riyadh, was inaugurated. Since taking office, he has signed a string of executive actions to review or reverse some of Trump’s key policies.

Advertisements

Trump oversaw a close-knit US relationship with both the UAE and Saudi Arabia, in line with his staunch support for Israel and “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran.

In May 2019, the former US president declared a national emergency over tensions with Iran to sidestep objections from Congress about the sale of $8bn worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan.

The Trump administration notified Congress in November that it had approved the sale of more than $23bn in advanced weapons systems, including F-35 fighter jets and armed drones, to the UAE.

Advertisements

That announcement came shortly after the Emirati government agreed to normalise relations with Israel in a US-brokered deal.

“This is in recognition of our deepening relationship and the UAE’s need for advanced defense capabilities to deter and defend itself against heightened threats from Iran,” then-US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement at the time.

Rights groups denounced the sale, saying it could fuel regional conflict, notably in Libya and in Yemen, where the UAE and Saudi Arabia have waged a devastating war against the country’s Houthi rebels.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers also slammed the weapons transfer, saying it would “facilitate a dangerous arms race”.

Advertisements

Legislators put forward bipartisan joint resolutions seeking to stop the deal, but their efforts failed in the US Senate, where two procedural votes did not gain a majority in the chamber.

Trump had threatened to veto any congressional effort to halt the sales, as well.

Minister for Humanitarian affairs, Sadiya Umar deny corruption reports

Advertisements

It involves the release of a monthly stipend of N5,000 to the poorest and most vulnerable Nigerian households, mostly in rural communities.

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development has denied that the Household Uplifting Programme-Conditional Cash Transfer of the ministry is riddled with corruption and bogged by inefficiency.

The denial came after NoRM‘s known Media published a report on Sunday that all was not well with the program meant to help alleviate poverty among Nigeria’s poorest people.

Advertisements

“This publication is not a true representation of the Household Uplifting Programme-Conditional Cash Transfer (HUP-CCT),” the ministry said on Wednesday.

“The National Cash Transfer Programme was introduced by the Federal Government in 2016 in partnership with the World Bank to fortify social safety nets and establish a social protection system in Nigeria.

Advertisements

“This is in line with the President Buhari led Government’s Social Investment agenda of eradicating poverty and promoting shared prosperity amongst the citizenry.

“The Programme has many objectives that include: improved Household consumption that could improve the economy of the community; increase in utilization of health and nutrition services

Advertisements

“On the whole, the programme is a component of Government’s resolve to reduce community poverty in Nigeria

“As at December 2020, the programme operated in 33 states of the country and the FCT. A total of 1,414,983 beneficiaries with 7,068,629 individual household member beneficiaries have been enrolled, covering 487 Local Government Areas, 4,716 Wards and 37,628 Communities. The programme targets to cover all States of the Federation by March 2021.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management & Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq (Noble Reporters Media, Olamide)

“Contrary to claims of lacking implementation structure, the Programme has a clearly defined implementation structure with an electronic base beneficiary enrolment system that focuses on the Poor and Vulnerable Households (PVHHs) mined from the National Social Register. The PVHHs are identified through a combination of geographic and community based targeting mechanisms conducted by the various State Operating and Coordinating Units (SOCU) under the supervision and guidance of the National Social Safety Net Co-ordination Office (NASSCO). The Community Based Targeting (CBT) mechanism is used for the targeting process.

“The following clarifications are necessary for the discerning public:

Advertisements

“The database of Poor and Vulnerable Households (PVHHs) is generated at the state level and domiciled at State Ministries of Planning. This information is accessible through the National Social Safety Net Project (NASSP) website-www.nassp.gov.ng

“All 3 grant based programmes are within budgetary provisions and are processed electronically.

Rapid Transfer Register (RRR) – This is provided for under the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP).

“Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) – This is funded from the Abacha restituted funds and the World Bank facility.

“Cash Grant to Rural Women (CGRW) -This is a one-off cash grant and it is provided for in the 2020 Appropriation Act.

Advertisements

“Electronic disbursement is done to the extent of infrastructural capacity of any location, noting that the targeted beneficiaries of the CCT are the poorest of the poor who normally dwell in rural areas typically lacking banking and telecom facilities.

“At the commencement of the programme in September 2016, Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the FG and all states. Some states committed to the programme instantly while others joined in late. This clearly put some states in the lead ahead of others in the generation of the State Social Register of Poor and Vulnerable Households.

“The engagement of Payment Service Providers (PSPs) is carried out through a National Competitive Bidding (NCB) process that is within the World Bank Prior Review Mechanism threshold. Hence the transparency of the process is not in doubt.

“The CCT Programme provides capacity building, coaching and mentoring to beneficiaries on various topics including hygiene, girl child education, savings, etc. Formulation of co-operatives and savings are voluntary and managed by the beneficiaries with no degree of involvement by the Programme.

Advertisements

“Currently, State Social Registers have been generated across all the states, while the CCT is being implemented in all 36 states with only Borno, Ebonyi and Ogun states yet to commence payments. While many goodwill and statements of gratitude have been received from many State Governments on the programme, success stories and testimonies abound on how the Programme is impacting the lives of the beneficiaries as well as poor and vulnerable Nigerians with a positive effect on their communities as well.

“It is the desire of the Federal Ministry of humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to ensure the full and successful implementation of the administration’s Social Investment Programmes, in full alignment to Mr. President’s deliberate policy of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of Poverty by year 2030.”

Sunday Igboho could trigger a Yoruba-Hausa/Fulani war? – By Olamide

Advertisements

Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, has been in the spotlight lately over his eviction notice to herders in Oke Ogun area of Oyo state. Noble Reporters Media can confirm.

Blaming herders for the high level of insecurity in towns and villages in Ibarapa local government area of the state, Igboho gave them seven days to vacate the area.

In an interview with NoRM‘s known Media, Oye Adetunji (not real names), who grew up with Sunday Igboho, said his kinsman regularly entertained people while growing up.

Advertisements

“I have known Sunday Igboho since he was a child. We grew up on the same street in Igboho. We are both from Modeke area of the town. Our family houses are not far from each other,” he said.

“While we were growing up, he would assemble us and we would follow him to play around the town. From childhood when he was attending Community Primary School, Modeke, he cultivated the idea of leading a group of people.“He was a comedian.

Advertisements

I remember that regularly, he did things that made people laugh. Back then, during weekends, he would dress like a pregnant woman and then instruct one of us to beat a drum while he danced around the town.

Wherever people gathered to relax, he would go there to dance and make them laugh. He was a restless and lively person as a young boy.”

Adetunji, who is now living and working in Okeho town in Oyo state, said Igboho was a regular host to pupils who were sent away from school in those days.

Advertisements

He said his childhood friend eventually left the sleepy town to realise his desire to be a leader.

“I also remembered that in those days, when pupils were sent home from school for one reason or the other, they would head to Sunday Igboho house instead of going to their different homes,” he said.“He eventually left Igboho at a time in his life. But he is visiting the town regularly.

Whenever he comes home till date, it’s always like carnival; everyone will know that Sunday is around because he enters the town like a king.

Advertisements

Many people will pay him visit. In turn, he will also pay visits to his friends, the town’s traditional rulers and other leaders.

“He also pays visit to leaders of all religions in the town. That is why it is difficult to know his religion because he identifies with all religious groups and contributes to all their activities.”

When asked if indeed Igboho posses metaphysical powers, Adetunji said it is true, adding that Igboho’s grandfather, who had some forms of power, might have transferred it to his grandson.“The metaphysical power he has is beyond imagination… his grandfather was known to possess some powers.

Everyone who lived in the town before his death would know of the power of Sunday’s grandfather,” he said.“I knew the man well because we usually passed the front of his house everyday. He was around 95 years old at the time.

Advertisements

From stories we heard, many people visited him to seek his blessings. What I also heard from elders of the town is that if he cursed anyone, it would come to pass.

“Igboho is well known in Oke Ogun area of Oyo state because it is an ancient town and because we have scholars from the town, but lately, Sunday has added to its popularity.”

Advertisements

Here are few things to know about him:

  • Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho was born October 10, 1972. He is a right activist and a politician.
  • He is the chairman of Adeson International Business Concept Ltd and popularly referred to as the Akoni Oodua of Yoruba.
  • He started off as a motorcycle repairer and then ventured into automobiles where he sells cars and was able to start Adeson business Concept.
  • He is married to two wives and has children, including three professional footballers in Germany
  • He once worked with former Oyo Governor Rasheed Ladoja and became one of his most trusted aides. He became famous as a strong defendant of the Modakeke people in the Modakeke/Ife war between 1997 and 1998.
  • He gained social media tractions in January 2021 when he gave a week ultimatum to herdsmen in Ibarapa to vacate the land after the killing of Dr. Aborode.
  • He is believed to possess metaphysical powers and is a strong advocate for the Oduduwa republic.

Interesting Story.

A relatively known name in Oyo and Osun states, Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Sunday Igboho took upon himself the role of a freedom fighter for Yoruba land by dislodging criminal herders from Igangan in Ibarapa, Oyo State.

Advertisements

The sad event of June 5, 2011, which saw some undergraduates murdered at Iwo Road interchange, Ibadan, by supposed thugs of the Oyo State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the killings in Akinyele area of the city between June and September 2020, by Sunday Shodipe, were two security breaches that made the state notorious.Igboho’s visit to Seriki Hausa of Igangan, Alhaji Saliu Abdulkadir, was celebrated for two reasons.

One, he had visited Abdulkadri a week earlier and given him and his kinsmen a seven-day ultimatum to vacate Ibarapa to end criminal activities of some herders in the town.

This singular act, which many believed was courageous, confronting a perceived resident who he believed had links with criminal herders in the area, made his move heroic .

Two, Igboho’s visit was in defiance to Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive to security agencies to arrest and treat him as a criminal should he carry out his threat to forcefully eject Abdulkadri and his kinsmen from the land.

Advertisements

Abdulkadri had reported Igboho to Makinde over the threat, stressing that he and his kinsmen had been living in Oyo State for decades.

He said their children were born there, adding that they grew with others in the communities. He emphasised that there exists inter-marriages among Fulani and Yoruba in the state.

Advertisements

Igboho also fired back at Makinde in recorded voice notes that surfaced on social media, warning him to shelve his directive because, according to him (Igboho), he was out to liberate Yorubaland from the criminals. He also warned the governor not to order his arrest by security agencies.

But Nigerians were surprised when the video of Igboho’s weekend visit to eject Abdulkadri surfaced on social media (on Friday).

While most Yoruba saw it as a liberating move, others interpreted Igboho’s action as an affront on the government of Oyo State and security agencies. The nation is still nursing the controversy that trailed Igboho’s visit.

The man Sunday Igboho

According to him, he was born 47 years ago in Igboho in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State.

Chief Adeyemo hails from Aladinkun compound, Modeke, Igboho, Oorelope Local Government Area.

He grew up normally like any other child but began to manifest traits of unusual stubbornness and toughness as a teenager.

He attended primary and junior secondary schools in Igboho before moving to Modakeke in Osun State with his father. His last school in Igboho was Baptist High School. He relocated with his father to Modakeke where he grew up fighting in the community.

Advertisements

He learnt a vocation and fraternised with NURTW members, but he is not known as a major member of the union. He adopted the nickname ‘Igboho’ in Modakeke.

He was described as the son of an Igboho man. Igboho was said to have acquired mystical traditional powers to command guns and other weapons into appearance. This is his most outstanding ability.

Advertisements

With this ability and power, he fought on the side of Modakeke during the 1996/97 Ife/Modakeke riot.

He left the community after his fame grew, attracting envy among people in Modakeke community.

His fame as a local activist during the Modakeke/Ife riot attracted him to politicians, who took over leadership from the military with the return of civilian rule in 1999.

Advertisements

He worked for a former governor of Osun State and settled in Osogbo for some years.

He later worked as an independent traditional security coordinator for a former governor of Oyo State Rashidi Ladoja at the heat of the violent crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2004 to 2009.

His success at protecting Ladoja at the PDP rally in Akure, Ondo State capital, in December 2006, where the former governor was believed to be targeted for a major attack, remains a mystery to political watchers.

As a result, his fame rose in Ibadan and Oyo State given that Ladoja enjoyed massive sympathy among the populace, which condemned the way the PDP impeached him ‘illegally’ and gave the governorship ticket to his deputy, Adebayo Alao-Akala, in the 2007 election instead of allowing him (Ladoja).

Advertisements

Igboho’s relationship with Ladoja enhanced the former’s reputation among the people. When the late Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimola (2011-2019) caged the activities of hoodlums and reduced violence and brigandage in the city, Igboho went into the business of selling cars and landed properties.

Those who have had encounters with him confirmed that he used to fight for victims of land grabbing. For that, he was given plots of lands. He is one of the promoters of Oduduwa Republic.
