HURIWA blasts Matawalle, says “you don’t deserve to be remembered as gov”

Advertisements

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), on Tuesday, slammed Bello Matawalle, saying the Zamfara State Governor does not deserve to be mentioned as Governor in the history of the State.

The group said this while accusing the Governor of allegedly allowing bandits and kidnappers operate freely in the State.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, said the security situation in Zamfara had so worsened under Governor Matawalle.

The group said Matawalle had failed the people as the chief security officer of the State and “does not deserve to be remembered on the positive page of history.”

DAILY POST reported on Monday that the criminals released five children of Abubakar Bello Furfuri, a former Accountant General of the State.

The children were said to have spent five months and one day in captivity.

The criminal bandits then went on to kidnap Muhammad Galadima, the district head of Kwangami village and six others in the Zurmi Local Government Area of the State.

Advertisements

These are just a few of such incidents, including killings and maiming of innocent citizens being reported in the State.

And HURIWA wondered why the State Government would want to go into peace deals and introduce amnesty programmes for killers and bloodsucking bandits instead of crushing them.

“Matawalle’s sins are many and crimson…” HURIWA said.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

“Matawalle also granted so-called amnesty deal to Auwal Daudawa, who was accused of spearheading the abduction of over 300 schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State,” the group added.

The rights group said that the Governor had continued to grandstand and commune with the bandits under the guise of extending an olive branch.

Bello Matawalle reveals one thing hindering defeat of bandits.

Advertisements

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has suggested that ‘informats’ are hindering the defeat of bandits in Nigeria.

According to Matawalle, without informants, bandits will be easily defeated in the country.

The Governor said this on Monday while receiving five daughters of a former Accountant-General of Zamfara, abducted and held for seven months.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

They were presented to Matawalle by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 10, Mr Bello Sani-Deljan, accompanied by the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara, Mr Kolo Yusuf.

Recall that bandits took the five girls from their home in Furfuri in Bungudu Local Government Area in March.

The bandits released a video to social media in October showing the girls carrying sophisticated firearms and threatened to recruit them into banditry if the ransom they demanded was not paid.

A combined effort of the Police and other security operatives, however, led to the rescue of the girls unharmed.

However, Matawalle commended the security forces for the efforts made and urged them to put an end to banditry in the State.

He noted that intelligence reports showed that the girls were abducted successfully with support from informants who were either family members or close associates.

The Governor appealed to citizens of the state to “courageously fight informants by reporting suspects to the authorities without fear.

“Without informants, bandits will be strongly incapacitated and will easily be defeated,’’ Matawalle said.

The Governor directed that the girls be taken for proper medical checks and counselling before reuniting them with their family.

The political thugs said they wouldn’t stop the work or leave the place because it was given to them by a highly placed politician.

The shop at the NUJ complex was initially hired as a restaurant, but after the tenant winded up the business and left, it was converted into a campaign office by the thugs. Watch Video Here »

The rival thugs burned the said shop in 2021, and the NUJ asked them to vacate the office for fear of putting the whole NUJ Complex and other shops attached to it at risk.

Even after a team of policemen arrived at the secretariat, the thugs continued to haul insults at the officials and other members of the union.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the incident, the Secretary of the Union, Ibrahim Ahmad Gada, asked the security agencies to protect the lives and property of journalists, adding that the lives of working journalists in the state are at risk.

“If an armed thug can threaten to kill a working journalist what do you expect? The safety of all working journalists must be guaranteed. We are calling all the stakeholders to intervene. How can a thug dictate the way we can use our property in the state?” Gada asked.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, has expressed concern over the shutdown of four broadcast stations by Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle and asked him to immediately unseal the media houses.

Stations sealed by the governor include NTA, Gamji Television, Alumna Television and Pride FM Station, all located in the state capital, Gusau.

Zamfara State government had on Saturday, shut the stations, for covering a rally held by the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Dauda Lawan Dare.

The government claimed the rally was organised, despite a ban on campaigns by the state government over alleged security situation in the state.

But in a statement issued yesterday, and signed he NGE’s President, Mustapha Isah and the General Secretary, Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the umbrella body of all the editors in Nigeria described the action as illegal and a violation of the Nigeria constitution and other international instruments.

The guild stated that the only government agency charged with the constitutional mandate of regulating the broadcast stations or determining any infraction in the conduct of broadcasting industry was the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC.

‘’While the NGE doesn’t even wan’t to go into the illegality of the ban on political activities in that state, our primary concern here is the unlawful and unconstitutional action of the state governor against the affected stations for carrying out their constitutional and social obligations – of reporting events and keeping the citizens informed of political developments in the state.

‘’In fact, the shut stations would have been accused of unprofessional misconduct if they didn’t cover that rally. We are also encouraged by the fact that the regulatory agency of broadcasting, the NBC, has also condemned the unlawful action of Governor Bello Matawalle,’’ the NGE added.

Condemning the action of the governor in its entirety, the editors said his action was a serious threat to the democratic process and democracy, describing it as a precarious signal to what awaited the media, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The NGE stated further: ‘’The media reserves the right to cover all events, whether or not they are banned. No state government reserves the right to shut down any media house, in spite of their perceived infractions.

‘’In this case, the Zamfara State governor should have written a petition to the NBC, if at all the affected stations committed any infraction, instead resorting to self-help.

‘’The Guild stands for press freedom and freedom of expression and will always speak out against any attempt to muzzle the media.’’

The editors explained that the human right most closely related to the media was undoubtedly the right to freedom of opinion and expression.

It noted that freedom of expression, as upheld in the constitution and human rights instruments, covered the right to receive or impart information.

Describing the media as ‘’oxygen of democracy’’, the NGE reiterated its earlier position that the media was not an opponent of any government; but a professional institution charged with the constitutional obligation of monitoring the activities of the government and holding it accountable to the citizens.

Get arms and protect yourselves: Matawalle gov’t to Zamfara residents.

The Zamfara State Government has asked residents of the state to ‘obtain guns to defend themselves’ against terrorists who have been attacking the residents of the state for the past few years.

The Zamfara government stated this in a statement by Ibrahim Dosara, its commissioner for information, according to Daily Trust.

Mr Dosara said the Zamfara government has also “directed the state commissioner of police to issue (gun) license” to people who are qualified and willing to use the guns.

While Zamfara has by the statement formalised the advice to its residents to carry guns, the governor of the state is not the first to issue such advice.

Noble Reporters Media reported how Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina had earlier called on residents of his state to arm themselves against the gunmen in the state.

Zamfara and Katsina are two of the states most affected by the activities of terrorists, locally called bandits, whose actions have led to the deaths of hundreds of people and the kidnap of thousands of others.
