Thirteen children among 54 killed in twin Pakistan bombing.

At least 54 people, including 13 children, were killed in two separate transport tragedies in western Pakistan on Sunday.

Forty-one are so far confirmed dead after their bus crashed into a ravine in southwestern Balochistan province, while at least 10 students died in the boating accident in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said.

At the remote site of the bus crash, north of the city of Bela in the Lasbela district, senior administration official Hamza Anjum said “the dead bodies … are beyond recognition.”

Anjum said 40 corpses were retrieved from the wreck alongside three injured, one of whom died shortly after. The remaining two survivors were in “serious” condition.

The charred brown husk of the vehicle chassis smoked on a dry riverbed under the bridge on Sunday, according to a video released by the provincial government.

A team of men used heavy machinery to move the twisted metal aside and pull out the burnt remains, which were then shrouded in white cloth.

Head of the local rescue service Asghar Ramazan told AFP the bus had been loaded with containers of oil.

“When the bus fell down, it immediately caught fire,” he said. The oil “caused the fire to flare up so much that it was difficult to control,” he added.

The bus was reportedly carrying a total of 48 passengers when it hit a pillar on the bridge and careened off course earlier on Sunday.

It had been traveling overnight between Balochistan’s provincial capital of Quetta and the southern port city of Karachi.

“It is feared that the driver may have fallen asleep,” Anjum said, also mentioning the possibility he had been speeding during the long-distance trip.

“We will investigate the causes of the accident,” he said, adding that DNA tests would be needed to determine the identity of the remains, which had been “badly mutilated”.

‘Rescue underway’
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, local police official Mir Rauf told AFP all of the drowned so far recovered from the boating accident on Tanda Dam lake were aged between 7 and 14.

A total of 17 were rescued alive from the reservoir by Sunday afternoon.

“Everything was normal until suddenly the boat overturned,” said 11-year-old survivor Muhammad Mustafa from his hospital bed in the nearby city of Kohat.

The class of madrassa students “went out for a picnic and boating” at the scenic location, district police chief Abdul Rauf told AFP.

“According to the information so far, the boat was in a dilapidated condition and it was overloaded too,” he said.

Ramshackle highways, lax safety measures and reckless driving contribute to Pakistan’s dire road safety record.

Passenger buses are frequently crammed to capacity and seatbelts are not commonly worn, meaning high death tolls from single-vehicle accidents are common.

In November, 20 people, including 11 children, were killed when a minibus crashed into a deep and water-logged ditch in southern Pakistan.

According to World Health Organization estimates, more than 27,000 people were killed on Pakistan’s roads in 2018.

Mass drownings are also common in Pakistan when aged and overloaded vessels lose their stability and pitch passengers into the water.

In July last year, at least 18 women drowned after an overloaded boat carrying about 100 members of the same family capsized during a marriage procession between two villages

At least 34 killed, 150 injured in Pakistan suicide bombing.

At least 34 people were killed while 150 others were injured in a suicide bomb attack on a mosque in northwestern Pakistan’s Peshawar on Monday.

The bombing drew nationwide condemnation from opposition political parties and government officials. Ghulam Ali, the provincial governor in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where Peshawar is the capital, said there were fears the death toll could rise even further.

Most of the casualties were policemen and police officers – the targeted mosque is located within a sprawling compound, which also serves as the city’s police headquarters. Police said between 300 to 350 worshipers were inside the mosque when the bomber detonated his explosives.

Sarbakaf Mohmand, a commander for the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter. The main spokesman for the organization was not immediately available for comment.

The police compound is located in a high-security zone in Peshawar, along with several government buildings, and it was unclear how the bomber managed to penetrate so deep inside the zone unnoticed.

The impact of the explosion collapsed the roof of the mosque, which caved in and injured many, according to Zafar Khan, a local police officer.

Siddique Khan, a police official, said the death toll rose to 34, and the dead included Noor-ul-Amin, the prayer leader. Meanwhile, officials said at least 150 were wounded.

A survivor, 38-year-old police officer Meena Gul, said he was inside the mosque when the bomb went off. He said he doesn’t know how he survived unhurt. He could hear cries and screams after the bomb exploded, Gul said.

Rescuers scrambled trying to remove mounds of debris from the mosque grounds and get to worshippers still trapped under the rubble, police said. At a nearby hospital, many of the wounded were listed in critical condition as the casualty toll rose.

‘Stern action’
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in a statement condemned the bombing and ordered authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the victims. He also vowed “stern action” against those who were behind the attack.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan also condemned the bombing, calling it a “terrorist suicide attack” in a Twitter posting. “My prayers & condolences go to victims’ families,” said the ex-premier. “It is imperative we improve our intelligence gathering & properly equip our police forces to combat the growing threat of terrorism.”

Peshawar has been the scene of frequent militant attacks. The Pakistani Taliban, are known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP and are a separate group but also a close ally of the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021 as U.S. and NATO troops were in the final stages of their pullout from the country after 20 years of war.

The TTP has waged an insurgency in Pakistan over the past 15 years, fighting for the implementation of their distorted version of Islamic laws in the country, the release of their members who are in government custody and a reduction of the Pakistani military presence in the country’s former tribal regions.

Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant attacks since November when the Pakistani Taliban ended their cease-fire with government forces.

The truce ended as Pakistan was still contending with last summer’s unprecedented flooding that killed 1,739 people, destroyed more than 2 million homes, and at one point submerged as much as one-third of the country. The flood damages totaled to more than $30 billion and authorities are now, months later, still struggling to arrange tents, shelter and food for the survivors.

Pakistan Court Frees Rapist After Deal To Marry Victim.

A Pakistan court freed a rapist after he married his victim in a settlement brokered by a council of elders in the northwest of the country, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Dawlat Khan, 25, was sentenced in May to life imprisonment by a lower court in Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province for raping a deaf woman.

He was released from prison on Monday after the Peshawar High Court accepted an out-of-court settlement agreed by the rape survivor’s family.

“The rapist and the victim are from the same extended family,” Amjad Ali, Khan’s lawyer, told AFP.

“Both families have patched up after an agreement was reached with the help of local jirga (traditional council),” he added. (Watch Video Here)

Rape is notoriously difficult to prosecute in Pakistan, where women are often treated as second-class citizens.

According to the Asma Jahangir Legal Aid Cell — a group providing legal assistance to vulnerable women — the conviction rate is lower than three percent of cases that go to trial. (Watch Video Here)

Few cases are reported because of the associated social stigma, while lapses during investigations, shoddy prosecutorial practices, and out-of-court settlements also contribute towards abysmal conviction rates.

“It is against the basic principles of justice and the law of the land which does not recognise such an arrangement,” she told AFP. (Watch Video Here)

“Rape is a non-compoundable offence that cannot be resolved through a feeble ‘compromise’ marriage,” the group tweeted.

Pakistan ex-PM Khan calls off march, party to leave all assemblies

Advertisements

Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party will be quitting the country’s regional and national assemblies, the former Pakistani prime minister confirmed Saturday.

The former cricket star turned politician made the announcement during his first public appearance since being wounded in a gun attack earlier this month.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in Parliament in April. He is now in the opposition and has been demanding early elections, claiming his ouster was illegal and orchestrated by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, with the U.S. government’s help.

Sharif and Washington have dismissed the allegations and the current government says the next polls will be held as scheduled in 2023.

Khan launched a protest march late last month from the eastern city of Lahore toward Islamabad as part of his campaign for early polls, but stepped down from personally leading the convoy after he was wounded by a gunman who opened fire at his vehicle. One of Khan’s supporters was killed and 13 were wounded in the attack. The gunman was arrested.

On Saturday night, in the city of Rawalpindi near Islamabad, Khan rejoined the protest march, where he made his remarks.

He told tens of thousands of his cheering supporters that his Tehreek-e-Insaf party was leaving all regional and national assemblies and getting out of this “corrupt system.”

His party resigned from the national assembly en masse in April ahead of a vote to elect a new prime minister, although most of the resignations have yet to be accepted.

Khan’s stronghold is in the northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and leaving the Punjab assembly would hand power to his rivals.

The politician spoke for more than an hour and included references to the Sufi mystic Rumi and the fall of the Soviet Union.

Toward the end of his speech, Khan did a U-turn on his demand for snap elections, saying his party would win the polls scheduled for nine months’ time. He also said he would no longer march on the capital.

“They (the government) cannot deal with a march in Islamabad, they can call as many police as they want, but they cannot stop the hundreds of thousands from entering Islamabad,” said Khan.

“We could have created a situation like Sri Lanka. I have decided against marching on Islamabad because I don’t want there to be anarchy in the country. I don’t want to cause any harm to this country.”

After months of protests over an economic crisis that has led to shortages of essentials such as food and medicine, thousands of Sri Lankans stormed the president’s residence in July, forcing then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee and later resign.

Khan said he will meet with his chief ministers and parliamentary party and announce the timing of the exit.

The rally Saturday night came days after the appointment of a new army chief, Asim Munir, who ran the country’s spy agency during Khan’s term in office but was fired without an explanation from the then-premier.

Munir replaces Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, who Khan has also accused of playing a role in his ouster. Bajwa denies the allegation.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari described Khan’s Saturday night rally as a “facesaving flopshow.”

“No matter who terrorists collude with, Türkiye will always hold them accountable for every drop of blood they shed,” Erdoğan said at the ceremony. “No one can teach lessons to Türkiye, which is the only NATO ally that fought Daesh hand to hand and was victorious,” he continued, referring to the cross-border anti-terror operations in northern areas of Iraq and Syria, near the Turkish border.

During the event, Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif jointly inaugurated the third of four MILGEM corvette ships manufactured by Türkiye for the Pakistan Navy. The MILGEM (National Ship) marine platform project is a Turkish warship program that aims to develop multipurpose corvettes and frigates that can be deployed in a range of missions.

Türkiye condemns attack on fmr Pakistan PM, Imran Khan.

Türkiye on Friday condemned an attack on former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry wished a “prompt recovery” to Khan, who was injured in the leg during the assualt, and conveyed its condolences over the death of a Pakistani citizen who died in the attack.

“We strongly condemn the attack that targeted Mr. Imran Khan, former prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, at a political rally yesterday (Nov. 3) that has left one person dead,” said the ministry.

“Türkiye attaches importance to peace and stability of Pakistan and will always continue to stand by friendly and brotherly Pakistan,” the statement further said.

On Thursday, a gunman opened fire at a campaign truck carrying Khan in the Wazirabad district in the eastern Punjab province, wounding him in the leg. He was transported to a hospital in Lahore and is said to be in stable condition.

Leaders of his party, the Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI), said it was a planned assassination attempt, and have accused the prime minister, interior minister and an intelligence official of being involved in the attack.

Since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in parliament in April, Khan has held a series of anti-government rallies for “real freedom,” and has alleged that he was removed in a U.S.-sponsored conspiracy. The coalition government and Washington have denied the claims.

Last week, Khan started his “long march” protest toward the capital Islamabad to demand early elections. But Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s government said there would be no early vote, and the next elections will be held as scheduled, in late 2023.

Fmr Pakistan PM Imran Khan reportedly shot.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot in the foot in an apparent attempt on his life Thursday, according to multiple local news channels.

A gunman reportedly opened fire at a campaign truck carrying Khan, wounding him slightly and also some of his supporters, a senior leader from his party and police said.

Party official Asad Umar said Khan was wounded in the leg and was not seriously hurt. The identity of the gunman, who was arrested at the scene, was not immediately known. No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.

According to police, the attack happened in the Wazirabad district in the eastern Punjab province where Khan was traveling in a large convoy of trucks and cars heading towards the capital, Islamabad, as part of his campaign aimed at forcing the government to hold early elections.

The motives of the attacker were unknown, and it was also unclear whether the shooting was an attempt on Khan’s life.

The shooting underscored the growing political instability in Pakistan, with both the government and Khan – a former cricket star turned politician – refusing to back down from their positions.

The country’s powerful military has said that although Khan had a democratic right to hold a rally in Islamabad, no one will be allowed to destabilize the country. Authorities in Islamabad have already deployed additional security around the city to deter any clashes or violence.

Khan with later seen with a bandage on his right leg, just above the foot, according to reports and a blurry image. He was moved to another vehicle from his container truck, from where announcements were being made that he was safe.

“He is being taken to a hospital in Lahore, but he is not seriously wounded. A bullet hit him in the leg,” Umar told reporters. According to the Interior Ministry, the government has ordered a probe into the incident.

An unspecified number of supporters from his Tehreek-e-Insaf party who were part of the march were also wounded, according to the announcement from the party.

The attack happened less than a week after Khan began his march from Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, along with thousands of supporters.

Since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in Parliament in April, Khan has alleged that his ouster was a conspiracy engineered by his successor, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the United States – claims that both the new premier and Washington have denied.

Khan’s latest challenge to the government comes after Pakistan’s elections commission disqualified him from holding public office for five years for allegedly selling state gifts unlawfully and concealing assets as premier.

Khan, who has challenged the disqualification in a pending court case, has said he would sue Chief Election Commissioner Sikandara Raja, who was behind the decision, for calling him a “dishonest person.”

It was also not immediately known if Khan’s convoy would proceed on to Islamabad. Earlier, Fawad Chaudhry, a senior leader in Khan’s party, had said they plan to enter Islamabad on Friday.

The attack also comes at a time when impoverished Pakistan is grappling with the aftermath of unprecedented floods that struck the country over the summer, killing 1,735 people and displacing 33 million

Pakistan’s former PM Imran Khan announces march on capital.

Advertisements

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan says he will begin a protest march with his supporters from the eastern city of Lahore to the capital on Friday to call for early elections.

Smaller protests by Khan’s supporters took place last week after Pakistan’s top election tribunal found Khan guilty of unlawfully selling gifts from foreign dignitaries and heads of state and removed him from his parliamentary seat.

“I have decided to launch the long march from Friday at 11am [06:00 GMT] from Liberty Square in Lahore to Islamabad,” Khan said at a press conference in Lahore on Tuesday. The distance between the two cities is about 380km (236 miles).

“I am marching to press the government to announce elections immediately,” he said, adding that his supporters and party members should avoid violence. “This will be the largest long march in the country’s history.”

The government has already said demonstrators will be barred from entering Islamabad and they expect to deploy about 30,000 law enforcement officers to encircle the capital for protection.

Advertisements

Authorities also sent hundreds of containers into Islamabad to barricade all entry points before the demonstrators arrive.

Since being removed from office in a no-confidence vote in the legislature in April, Khan has held protests across the country calling for snap elections, but the government has said they will be held as scheduled in October or November next year.

Last week’s ruling has added to the political and economic uncertainty plaguing Pakistan this year. The 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was accused of misusing his 2018 to 2022 premiership to buy and sell gifts in state possession that were received during visits abroad and worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).

The Election Commission of Pakistan ruled that Khan would be removed from his seat in parliament but did not order a longer disqualification from public office, which under Pakistani law can be up to five years.

The political instability has fuelled economic uncertainty with international ratings agencies questioning if the current government can maintain difficult economic policies in the face of political pressure and looming elections.

In his remarks, Khan also decried the killing of prominent Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya by local police, saying Sharif was compelled to flee the country because his life was in danger

Minister hails Türkiye’s help for Pakistan flood victims

Advertisements

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif welcomed Türkiye’s support and humanitarian assistance for the victims of recent floods that have affected over 33 million people in the South Asian country.

Talking to a Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay) delegation led by Hakkı Turunç, its goodwill ambassador, the premier commended the relief and rescue operations launched by several Turkish relief agencies, which helped tens of thousands of flood victims across the country, said a statement from the prime minister’s office.

Turkish Ambassador to Pakistan Mehmet Paçaçı was also present at the meeting.

“Be it the earthquake of 2005, super floods of 2010 and recent floods, Türkiye has always come forward to help Pakistanis,” Sharif said.

Thanking President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish people for sending trains loaded with supplies, the prime minister pointed highlighted the 50 boats provided by Türkiye for rescue and relief operations, which helped relocate hundreds of people stranded in inundated parts of Sindh and Balochistan provinces.

Turunç pledged his full support not only in the rescue and relief operations, but for the rehabilitation of the flood victims across the country.

Türkiye has so far sent 15 planes and 13 trains loaded with thousands of tons of relief goods, including tents, boats, food packages, medicines, vaccines, kitchen items and other supplies to flood-ravaged Pakistan.

Heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 1,638 people since mid-June, according to the United Nations, besides damaging swathes of agricultural land, leaving millions homeless and destroying infrastructure. The southern districts of Balochistan and Sindh provinces are worst-affected, while parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also been hit.

A Turkish ministerial delegation headed by Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu visited flood-hit regions in Pakistan last month.

Over three million students in Pakistan affected by floods – UN.

Advertisements

The education of 3.5 million students has been interrupted by the devastating floods in Pakistan, the United Nations said in a report on Friday.

The report, released during U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s two-day solidarity and support visit to Pakistan, said the floods have also hit the refugees living in the South Asian nation.

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates said nearly 800,000 refugees live in districts officially notified as “calamity hit” in the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

In the southeastern province of Sindh alone, the report said, over 1.2 million hectares of agricultural land have been damaged.

Over 1.5 million houses have been damaged or destroyed in Sindh – nearly 88% of the total nationwide, it added.

The report showed over 1,460 health facilities were affected by the heavy rains and floods.

“Access to health facilities, health care workers, and essential medicines and medical supplies remain limited,” it added.

The catastrophic floods battered Pakistan killing 1,391 people since June 14, according to the country’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Pakistani officials told Guterres on Friday that the destructive floods caused more than $30 billion in damage and that the country will need international assistance to rebuild its infrastructure.

A total of 12,722 people have been injured in rain and flood-related incidents across the country, official data showed.

Monsoon season in Pakistan, like in other countries in the region, usually results in heavy rains, but this year has been the wettest since 1961.

“Standing water continues to cover vast swaths of the country,” the report said, citing satellite-detected water extents mapped by the U.N. Satellite Centre.

The mapping indicates preliminarily that at least 75,000 square kilometers (28,957 square miles) of land in Pakistan, analyzed between Aug. 1 and 9, appears to be affected by floodwaters.

More than half of them appear to be croplands.

Pakistanis install barriers against floodwaters that “looks like sea”

Advertisements

People are building barriers in some parts of Pakistan on Thursday to hold back rising waters that have engulfed nearly a third of the country after weeks of rain, while officials said 12 more deaths took the toll to 1,355.

Hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes in a disaster blamed on climate change estimated to have caused losses of about $10 billion, disrupting the lives of nearly 33 million of a population of 220 million.

People worked to strengthen an existing dyke as floodwaters threatened the town of Bhan Syedabad in the southern province of Sindh, one of the worst-hit regions.

A short distance away, Pakistan’s largest freshwater lake of Manchar is dangerously close to bursting its banks, as high water levels persist despite breaches by authorities to stave off further floods in an effort that displaced 100,000 people.

National disaster authorities said 12 deaths in the last 24 hours carried the toll to 1,355. Seven were children, who make up 481 of the dead.

The floods were brought by record monsoon rains and glacier melt in the northern mountains. In July and August, Pakistan received 391 millimeters (15.4 inches) of rain, or nearly 190% more than the 30-year average, while Sindh got 466% more than the average.

The World Health Organization has said more than 6.4 million people need humanitarian support in the flooded areas. The United Nations has called for $160 million in aid.

The government has boosted cash handouts to flood victims to 70 billion Pakistani rupees ($314 million) and will buy 200,000 tents to house displaced families, authorities have said.

In televised remarks, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said Wednesday he visited Sindh earlier in the day and saw what he described as something resembling “a sea of water” in the province – adding that he had never seen such devastation in his life before.

Pakistan Embassy in Ankara announces fundraiser for flood victims.

Advertisements

The Pakistan Embassy in Ankara on Wednesday announced that an online fundraiser would be organized to help victims of the recent devastating floods that swept the country.

“All Pakistani community, our Turkish brothers and sisters are requested to attend the event and contribute to relief assistance,” a statement by the Embassy of Pakistan in Ankara said.

The virtual fundraiser will be held on Thursday at around 7:30 p.m., the embassy said.

One-third of the country’s land has been under water for several weeks now.

Close to 13,000 people have been injured across the country in the rain and flood-related incidents since June 14.

According to the official statistics, over 750,000 animals of different kinds have been killed due to rains and floods, a grim development that is likely to cause shortages of meat, milk and other dairy products in a country already facing a looming threat of food insecurity.

Of the total figure, around 70% or 500,000 livestock have been washed away by raging floods in the southwestern province of Balochistan, followed by northeastern Punjab, where over 200,000 animals have been killed since June 14, showed figures provided by the state-run National Disaster Management Authority.

Public infrastructure and private properties, including around 287,000 houses, have been completely damaged, according to the embassy.

The estimated cost to rebuild the damaged infrastructure is $10 billion, the statement added.

Türkiye has, so far, sent 11 airplanes and three trainloads of rescue and relief items to Pakistan while a high-level delegation, led by the country’s ministers for interior and environment, urbanization and climate change, paid a visit to take stock of the situation.

Many countries and multinational organizations have dispatched relief in cash and kind to Pakistan, which is undergoing financial hardships due to depleting foreign reserves.

Deaths rise in Pakistan flood as survivors face diseases, snakebites.

Advertisements

A massive outbreak of waterborne diseases and deadly snakebites are weighing on hundreds of thousands of flood survivors in Pakistan, officials said on Sunday, as the death toll from the months of devastation rose to 1,300.

At least 26 more people died on Saturday, most in the southern province of Sindh, which has been hit the worst and faces another deluge from Pakistan’s longest river that is swollen by rainwater flowing downstream from the mountainous north.

The latest deaths have taken the toll since June’s start of the climate-induced catastrophe to 1,290, the national disaster agency said in the latest update.

Several towns and cities in Sindh that remained submerged for almost two months now face another deluge from the Indus River, provincial government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab said.

A massive rescue operation backed by helicopters and boats was underway for a third day to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people marooned in remote villages, Wahab added.

At least half a million survivors living in makeshift shelters without access to clean drinking water, toilets and sanitation are now facing waterborne diseases, provincial Health Minister Azra Pechuho said.

More than 100 cases of snake bites and nearly 500 of dog bites have been reported from the flood-hit areas, Pechuho said.

Medics from the military, government hospitals and charities are treating nearly 150,000 patients for diarrhoea, more than 100,000 with skin infections and thousands with malaria symptoms at temporary clinics, the minister added.

More rains have been predicted on the northern mountains through Tuesday.

Pakistan Flood: Death toll jumps 1,000.

Advertisements

The last 24 hours saw an additional 57 more deaths from monsoon floods in Pakistan, with the death toll reaching 1,265, the country’s national disaster agency said on Saturday.

Of the latest fatalities, most of the deaths, 38, have been reported from the southern province of Sindh, where a fresh spell of floods has inundated more land in the central districts over the past 48 hours, pushing the overall tally in the province to 502 since mid-June.

Another 17 people were killed in separate flood-related mishaps in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has also been hit hard by the swirling floods caused by torrential rains.

Since June 14, a total of 285 people have died in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by 257 fatalities in the southwestern Balochistan province, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Some 188 people have died in the northeastern Punjab province, the authority said.

Many people who are already marooned are now bracing for the peak of high floods at the Kotri barrage, located some 150 kilometers (about 93 miles) from Karachi on Saturday before the flow is released for the Indus Delta downstream.

Footage aired on local broadcaster Geo News showed hundreds of desperate people, including in the towns of Khairpur Nathan Shah, Johi and Shadadkot in central Sindh, placing sand and sand-packed bags in an attempt to consolidate embankments against the gushing floodwaters.

Floods caused by unprecedented rains have inundated a third of the country, prompting the government to issue an international appeal.

Pakistan has already received 12 planes from Türkiye, one of which has just landed at Karachi airport, carrying tents, rations, medicine, kitchen items, baby food and other relief supplies.

Türkiye, which sent a ministerial delegation to Islamabad on Friday to express its solidarity with Pakistan, also delivered two trains full of relief supplies to the flood-ravaged country. The country will send another train from Istanbul in the coming days.

Constant rains and raging floods have already destroyed a large chunk of the country’s infrastructure and agricultural lands, including tens of thousands of houses, roads and bridges, as well as washing away over a million animals.

Almost 45% of the country’s cropland has already been inundated by the floods, posing a serious threat to food security and further adding to already skyrocketing inflation.

Pakistan celebrates 75th Independence Day in Turkish capital.

Advertisements

The Pakistani Embassy in Türkiye’s capital Ankara on Sunday marked the country’s 75th Independence Day.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Ankara Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi hoisted the national flag to the tune of the national anthem in the presence of Turkish dignitaries, the Pakistani community and media.

Messages of the president and prime minister of Pakistan were read out on the occasion.

In their messages, the Pakistani leadership paid tribute to the sacrifices of ancestors and vowed to transform Pakistan in accordance with the vision of the nation’s founder Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

The Pakistani leadership also expressed solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir who are facing military siege for the past three years and reassured Pakistan’s political, moral and diplomatic support for their legitimate right to self-determination.

Speaking at the event, Qazi felicitated the nation, particularly the Pakistani community in Türkiye, on the 75th anniversary of independence.

Qazi stated: “Aug. 14 reminds us of the epic democratic struggle of our ancestors to secure a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent where they could live according to their own will.

“It is a day to reiterate the firm resolve to uphold our national values of unity, faith and discipline as envisioned by our Quaid and renew our commitment to the objectives of the creation of Pakistan.”

The ambassador also thanked the Turkish leadership and people for congratulatory messages and for participating in the Pakistan Independence Day celebrations.

Ankara’s landmark, “Atakule,” the tallest tower and best-lit building in the city, showcased messages of Pakistan-Türkiye brotherhood and solidarity.

Moreover, bridges in Istanbul on the Bosporus linking Asia with Europe were illuminated in Pakistani flag colors.

On Aug. 14, 1947, the independent state of Pakistan appeared on the world stage for the first time when the Indian subcontinent was formally divided into two new dominions of India and Pakistan under the terms of the Indian Independence Act, adopted by the British Parliament.

The Muslims’ proposal to establish a separate state was accepted on March 23, 1940.

Ousted Pakistan PM Khan’s party wins crucial by-election by landslide.

Advertisements

Considered a precursor to the general elections, the results of by-polls are crucial, especially for Pakistan, which went through a political crisis. The party of Pakistan’s ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan looks set to score a landslide win in crucial by-elections, which will likely deepen years of political uncertainty in the South Asian country.

Candidates from Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehrek-e-Insaaf (PTI), were in the lead in at least 16 constituencies out of 20 in the politically significant central province of Punjab, according to the electoral commission. The outcome means Khan’s party can now regain the government in Punjab, three months after it lost the country’s biggest province to the party of former premier Nawaz Sharif.

Khan, who was ousted in a vote of no-confidence on April 9, has since been calling for fresh general elections.

Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz, who has been leading the campaign, said her party accepts defeat as “the decision by masses against them.”

Political experts believe victory in the crucial election will give impetus to Khan’s demand for fresh elections at a time when Pakistan’s economy is in the process of consolidation. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) this week revived a $6-billion bailout loan for Pakistan after several months of stalemate due to political turmoil. The country is expecting another $4 billion from friendly countries this month to avoid a looming default on international liabilities

Pakistani PM Sharif due in Turkey on three-day official visit.

Advertisements

Pakistan’s prime minister is set to arrive in Turkey on Tuesday on a three-day official visit to address bilateral relations and regional developments with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The trip will mark Shahbaz Sharif’s first visit to Turkey since he assumed office in mid-April after former Premier Imran Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote following political turmoil.

Sharif’s meeting with Erdoğan will cover the “entire gamut” of Pakistan-Turkey bilateral relations and address regional and international issues, a statement by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said Monday.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation, the prime minister will also have “extensive interaction” with leading Turkish businessmen and potential investors from a range of industries, the statement noted.

A business delegation from Pakistan comprising representatives of leading companies across various sectors will travel separately to Turkey to participate in the business engagements, it added.

Sharif will also attend a Pakistan-Turkey Business Council Forum, hosted in collaboration with the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK).

“During these events, the Prime Minister will highlight Pakistan’s vast investment potential and encourage Turkish companies to invest in Pakistan and work to strengthen Pakistan-Turkey trade and economic ties,” the statement said.

“Prominent businessmen from Pakistan will participate in these events and will also hold B2B meetings on the sidelines.”

Turkish companies have invested more than $1 billion in Pakistan in different sectors, including construction, power, solid waste management, hygiene products, electronics and dairy.

This year, Pakistan and Turkey are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, underpinned by structured institutional mechanisms.

The High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council is the primary platform at the leadership level, which has been instrumental in further cementing bilateral relations.

Six sessions of the HLSCC have taken place so far, with the 7th slated to take place this year.

“The historic and long-standing relations between Pakistan and Turkey are firmly anchored in common faith, shared history, and a glorious tradition of mutual support to each other on issues of core interest,” the foreign ministry said.

“The Turkish leadership and government have steadfastly supported the just cause of Kashmir. Turkey is an important and active member of the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir,” it noted.

“The two countries have convergent views on a range of issues including peaceful and stable Afghanistan, Palestine, and countering Islamophobia.”

The statement said Sharif’s visit to Turkey “is important in the context of deepening and broadening bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, regional connectivity, health, education, culture and people-to-people relations.”

“It will help in further strengthening the leadership dialogue and existing multi-dimensional strategic relationship between the two countries and will impart fresh impetus to the efforts to take this unique partnership to new heights,” it added

Hulusi Akar, Pakistani army chief, Qamar discuss defense cooperation

Advertisements

Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Pakistan’s army chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa discussed a range of issues, including defense cooperation and regional security in a meeting on Saturday.

The meeting was held at the army headquarters in Pakistan’s northeastern garrison city of Rawalpindi, the military’s media wing said in a statement.

“During the meeting, matters of mutual interest including defense and security cooperation between both the countries and overall regional security situation were discussed,” the statement added.

“Both reiterated the desire to further enhance bilateral relations including efforts for bringing peace and stability in the region,” it added.

Akar also met his Pakistani counterpart Khawaja Asif in the capital Islamabad. According to a statement by the Turkish Defense Ministry, Akar “emphasized the importance of further increasing the military cooperation between the two countries.”

Akar visited Pakistan in connection with the launch of PNS Badr, the third ship under the framework of Turkey’s National Ship Project (MILGEM), held in the port city of Karachi on Friday.

Last year, Turkey and Pakistan agreed to increase their cooperation in the military field, especially in training and the fight against terrorism.

Ankara and Islamabad have strengthened bilateral defense and security cooperation in recent years. In October 2018, the Pakistan Navy commissioned a 17,000-ton fleet tanker built in collaboration with a Turkish defense company in Karachi.

It was the largest warship ever constructed at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works. The project was completed in collaboration with the Turkish defense contractor STM.

In July 2018, Ankara won a multibillion-dollar tender to supply four corvettes to the Pakistan Navy, in what was dubbed the largest-ever export deal in the Turkish defense industry’s history by then-Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli

Recent Turkey-made corvette tailored for Pakistan cements strong bonds

Advertisements

Turkey and Pakistan on Friday vowed strong bonds and determination to further broaden cooperation, pioneered by the defense industry, as they witnessed a launch of the latest Turkish-built corvette tailored for the Pakistan Navy.

The third MILGEM-class corvette, named PNS Badr, was launched in a ceremony at a shipyard in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi attended by Turkish National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Pakistani Defense Minister Muhammad Israr Tareen and other officials.

Addressing the launch via video message, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey would provide all the support needed to strengthen Pakistan’s military infrastructure.

The MILGEM (National Ship) marine platforms project is a Turkish warship program that aims to develop multipurpose corvettes and frigates that can be deployed in a range of missions.

These include reconnaissance, surveillance, early warning, anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air warfare, and amphibious operations.

In July 2018, the Pakistan Navy signed a contract for the acquisition of four Ada class ships with Turkish state-owned defense firm ASFAT.

According to the plan, two corvettes were envisaged to be built in Turkey and the other two in Pakistan, in a deal that included technology transfer.

“The production process of all these ships, which are equipped with the most modern weapons and sensor systems developed by our country, continues as planned,” Erdoğan said.

The deliveries of the ships, which will be able to perform all kinds of military duties from air defense to submarine defense, will be made at six-month intervals starting from August 2023, Erdoğan noted.

With an emphasis on the deep-rooted historical ties between Turkey and Pakistan, the president said the project is one of the most concrete and recent examples of it, voicing hope for the project to be “a harbinger of greater cooperation.”

‘Moment of pride’
For his part, Prime Minister Sharif said the launch of the ship was a “moment of pride for the entire Pakistani nation and the naval forces of the two countries.”

He said Turkey and Pakistan are tied in a strong bond and the joint production of the warship PNS Badr epitomized that bond.

The multi-dimensional cooperation between Pakistan and Turkey in the areas of defense, foreign policy and public welfare was touching new heights of friendship for the benefit of the two peoples, Sharif was cited as saying by the Pakistani Daily Times newspaper.

The cooperation between the Pakistan Navy and the Turkish defense companies will lead to further strengthening of relations between the two brotherly countries, he noted.

The prime minister termed Turkey and Pakistan as “one nation residing in two countries,” lauding Turkey for being a great partner and always being a great supporter of the sovereignty of Pakistan.

He said the government of Pakistan was committed to expanding multifarious infrastructure to ensure economic connectivity in the country and emphasized that cooperation with Turkey would yield positive results.

Erdoğan termed Pakistan as the country with the most strategic location in South Asia.

“Throughout history, this region has been the apple of the world’s eye with its ancient culture and wealth. Pakistan and its people have a special place for us,” the president said.

Erdogan also emphasized the necessity of providing all means of support to strengthen the military infrastructure of Pakistan, “whose security, stability and prosperity we consider equal to ours.”

The other vessel of the project, named Kaibar, is to be launched in September in Istanbul, he said.

MILGEM project
The MILGEM corvettes feature state-of-art surface, sub-surface and anti-air weapons and sensors, integrated through an advanced network central combat management system.

The vessels are on average 99 meters (325 feet) long with a displacement capacity of around 24,00 tons and can move at a speed of 29 nautical miles.

The anti-submarine combat frigates, which can be hidden from the radar, will further enhance the defense capability of the Pakistan Navy.

Turkey is one of only 10 countries in the world that can design, build and maintain warships using its national capabilities.

The MILGEM project was initiated in 2000 to locally design and build a fleet of multipurpose corvettes and frigates that will replace older ships.

The project has so far completed the deliveries of four Ada-class corvettes, the first of which was the TCG Heybeliada in 2011, the second was the TCG Büyükada in 2013, the third the TCG Burgazada in 2018 and the fourth ship, the TCG Kınalıada in 2019.

The fifth vessel, the first MILGEM I-class frigate of its kind, the Istanbul Frigate (F-515), was launched in January last year

Ousted PM, Imran Khan urges fresh Pakistan elections.

Advertisements

Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan called Thursday for fresh elections to be held in the country amid a political turmoil and economic downturn that grappled the South Asian nation.

Khan, along with his over 100 lawmakers in the lower house of Parliament, resigned after he lost a vote of confidence moved by a united opposition that blamed him for mismanaging the economy, governance and foreign relations.

“Whoever has made a mistake, there’s only one way to correct it that hold elections as soon as possible,” Khan told a large rally of tens of thousands of people in the eastern city of Lahore, the third such huge public gathering since he lost power to ratchet up pressure on the new government.

Khan asked his supporters to be ready for his call to march toward Islamabad if his demand to call fresh elections was delayed. “Wait for my call,” he said.

Although Khan, a cricket star turned politician, has claimed that the United States was behind his downfall, an assertion that Washington denies, he had lately fallen out with the country’s powerful military over differences regarding the appointment of the country’s top intelligence chief.

New Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday appointed a multiparty coalition Cabinet comprising former political rivals in the opposition who came together to oust Khan.

The military has directly ruled the country for almost half of its nearly 75-year history. It viewed Khan and his conservative agenda favorably when he won the election in 2018, but that support waned over the appointment and economic troubles.

Khan has remained defiant so far, rejecting the opposition’s accusations as part of a U.S. conspiracy to topple him just because he went ahead to visit Russia against a warning from Washington.

“We wanted to bring oil at 30% discount from Russia,” said Khan, who was in Moscow the day Russia attacked Ukraine, adding that his plans included buying wheat and gas as well.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday thanked the government and people of Turkey for helping the South Asian nation through thick and thin.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of an airport shuttle service in the capital Islamabad, Sharif said China and Turkey helped in completing the public transport project.

“The people of Pakistan and Turkey have a long history of brotherly relations,” he said.

Turkish Ambassador Mustafa Yurdakul and Chinese Charge d’ Affairs Pang Chunxue also attended the event.

The project was started by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 2017 and inaugurated by his younger brother after five years.

“President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a modern leader (who) strengthened the Turkish economy, built Turkey, has helped Pakistan in times of trouble and in times of peace,” said the Pakistani prime minister, adding that he was grateful for the support.

Taliban says Pakistani rocket fire kills 45 Afghans.

Advertisements

At least 45 civilians, including women and children, have been killed in airstrikes and artillery shelling by Pakistani forces along its border with Afghanistan, local Taliban officials said Saturday.

The attacks were carried out overnight in Afghanistan’s eastern Khost and Kunar provinces in the border areas between the two neighboring countries.

In Khost province, at least 40 civilians were killed and 20 wounded after jets bombarded four villages in Seperah district overnight, said a Taliban official who did not wish to be named.

The victims are civilians from three families who immigrated from the neighboring Pakistani region of Waziristan following a military operation there several years ago, the official added. Twenty-nine were from one family, he said.

In Kunar, Pakistani forces have been shelling the area using heavy artillery for the past three days on Marwara, Shelton and Nari districts, the acting provincial head of the Taliban’s information and culture department Najibullah Hanif told Deutsche Press-Agentur (dpa).

Five civilians, including children, were killed and one wounded in the Friday night attacks, he said.

Islamabad did not confirm whether it had carried out the attacks.

On Friday, seven Pakistani soldiers were killed in an ambush in the country’s North Waziristan tribal region. Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warned that there would be retaliation.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant group closely affiliated with the Afghan Taliban, operates in border areas between the two countries. The group has increased its attacks since the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan in August last year.

The Foreign Ministry in Kabul summoned the Pakistani ambassador to protest against the overnight strikes.

In a statement, the ministry warned Pakistan that such acts would damage relations between the two neighboring countries.
