Sowore said this during an interview on News Central’s Politics HQ, monitored by our correspondent on Thursday night.

Sowore, who described himself both as a pessimist and an optimist, said he is optimistic for the future whether he gets to be in charge or not, because the youth had woken up and would not settle for less than they deserved from governance.

Sowore said, “What is more important is my interest in making this country work. Politics should be a service. My kind of optimism is different. I expect the worst and hope for the best. I’m an optimist for the future. Even if we don’t get to be in charge directly, new generation would emerge that would not accept this kind of condition of existence and that we would have inspired them.

“Whatever little contribution we can give or any sacrifice we can make now that will even make people in power think twice sometimes when they make decisions or policies are not bad for me. The fact that we are seeing younger generation of persons who are getting radicalised as well and promising that this system will catch hell one day if it continues this way is for me an optimistic engagement.”

2023: I will work towards making Nigeria’s legislature unicameral – AAC’s Sowore.

Advertisements

Omoyele Sowore, the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) says he plans to make Nigeria’s legislature unicameral if given the mandate in the 2023 poll.

Sowore said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Calabar, insisting that Nigeria does not require a bicameral legislature as it was a waste of resources.

The founder of the online news platform – Sahara Reporters, said his target was to have a unicameral legislature in the country, as the nation does not require a Senate and House of Representatives that was more than that of the U.S Senate.

“The U.S is a multi-trillion dollar economy and has only 100 senators but Nigeria is not as rich as some states in the U.S has 109 senators and 360 house of representatives members.

“As a party, we have called for a scrapping of one of the houses, the nation can do with one but when it comes to Constitutional matters, it is the people that have the rights through a referendum,” he said.

He said that Nigeria needed a new constitution adding that the 1999 Constitution does not portray equity and egalitarianism.

He said that the new constitution should contain what the nation needed to restructure.

“We could not keep amending a constitution that is faulty and standing on nothing.

“We have been amending the Nigerian constitution since 1999 and we have not made headway because of its faulty foundation.

“The National Assembly does not understand the power of the Nigerian people that is why they must be one of the first casualties of a restructured Nigeria,” he said.

Sowore said his chances were bright in the 2023 general election, stating that some of the candidates of major parties had failed the nation in the past and should not be given another chance.

He said the usual tension before elections in Nigeria was usually created by politicians to cause apprehension so that people would not come out to vote.

“The best candidates are not the ones that are promoted in the front line, lots of Nigerians want the best to lead come 2023 and AAC have demonstrated character which is why many of them cannot come out for a debate where we are,” he said

Following charges of treasonable crime, cyberstalking President Muhammadu Buhari, and other offenses, Sowore’s movement was limited to Abuja by a federal high court in 2019.

Sowore can now leave Abuja but not leave Nigeria, according to the Appeal Court.

2023: Sowore opens up on backing Peter Obi for presidency.

Advertisements

Omoyele Sowore, the National Leader of the African Action Congress (AAC) and 2023 presidential aspirant, on Saturday dismissed reports that he spoke favourably about Peter Obi, a fellow presidential hopeful and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Noble Reporters Media reports that according to Sowore, Obi is among corrupt politicians in Nigeria.

“The news being circulated that I said Peter Obi is not CORRUPT is completely FALSE! I never said any such thing. My position is clear, Peter Obi is not different from his colleagues in PDP and APC. They are one and the same! Thank you!” he wrote on his verified Facebook page.

Obi, the vice presidential candidate of the PDP at the 2019 general election, declared his interest to contest the presidency in 2023 during a meeting with Anambra State monarchs on Thursday. He vowed to move Nigeria forward if given the opportunity to lead the country.

Obi’s declaration came just after the presidential flagbearer of the PDP at the 2019 elections, Atiku Abubakar, had also declared his interest.

Atiku, who contested alongside Obi, as his vice-presidential candidate, declared his interest on Wednesday.

Arrest of Lawyer over failure to “fish out” Sowore, unlawful: Femi Falana.

Advertisements

Human rights lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has faulted the Nigeria Police Force over the arrest of an Abuja based legal practitioner, Abubakar Marshall.

Marshall, a lawyer to activist Omoyele Sowore, was arrested on Friday by the FCT Police Command for failing to produce his client.

But in a statement issued on Sunday, Falana condemned the arrest, describing the act as illegal. He also dismissed claims by the police that Sowore jumped bail, saying that the activist had presented himself for any possible arraignment.

“In a bid to justify the illegal arrest of Abubakar Marshall Esq. the Police claimed that the lawyer contravened an unspecified provision of the Criminal Code because he failed to produce a client, Mr. Omoyele Sowore at a police station in the Federal Capital Territory,” the statement partly read.

“It is public knowledge that the movement of Mr Sowore has been restricted to the Federal Capital Territory for the past two years on the orders of the Federal Capital Territory. Since his abode is well known to the security agencies, it is grossly misleading to claim that his surety has contravened any provision of the Penal Code.

“However, in spite of the indiscretion of Abubakar Marshall to stand surety for Mr. Sowore, his arrest, detention and prosecution by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command cannot be justified under the law

“It is trite law that a surety cannot be arrested, detained and charged with any criminal offence before any court in Nigeria on the ground that a suspect has jumped bail or failed to report for investigation or arraignment.

“The penalty is that the surety is legally obligated to pay the sum stated in the recognisance or bail bond. Before the bail bond can be forfeited the surety is entitled to show a cause or justify before a Court why it should not be forfeited.

“However, if the surety fails to pay the sum stipulated in the bond the court shall proceed to recover it from the surety like a fine under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

“In view of the several decisions of Nigerian courts on the contractual nature of suretyship, Abubakar Marshall has not committed any offence whatsoever. The authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command are advised to withdraw the criminal charge erroneously filed before the Upper Area Court in Kubwa. However, since Mr. Sowore is not on the run, he has decided to report himself to the Police for any possible arraignment.”
