Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday expressed hope that this year’s general elections would take place as scheduled despite the current situation in the country.
Obasanjo, who spoke when members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) visited him at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, said the elections are of great importance to the international community, and as such Nigerians cannot take it less seriously.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had fixed February 25 for the presidential and National Assembly elections while the governorship and State House of Assembly polls will take place on March 11.
There are insinuations that the commission would postpone the elections over the fuel and naira scarcity in the country.
Obasanjo said: “We cannot take it (election) any less important than those people from the international community.
“We are in an interesting period in Nigeria. In less than three weeks, we will be going to the poll. I hope nothing will intervene against that. In less than three weeks, we will be electing a leader that will pilot the affairs of Nigeria for the next four years from May.
“And all of us in Nigeria, again, as I have said to you early this morning, I have been in Togo, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire from the beginning of the week. I can tell you that they are as concerned about what happens in Nigeria as every Nigerian should be.
“Last night before I left Abidjan, President Ouattara (Alassane) told me the position in West Africa that Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are vying for and he said to me, ‘well, we are putting it on hold until after Nigeria’s election.
“So even for them, Nigeria’s election is of importance. And I believe that for us who are directly involved, we cannot take any less important than those people.”
A statement by Obasanjo’s Media Aide, Kehinde Akinyemi quoted President Muhammadu Buhari to have commended Obasanjo for his foresight in creating the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – Nigeria Business Council.
According to the statement, El-Rufai who is the Deputy President of the Council, conveyed Buhari’s commendation while giving report of his meeting with the President held recently in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Quoting El-Rufai, it said “the President was excited about the Council. He said with such Council in Africa, the future will be brighter to work together.”
“Mr. President urged the former President to use his energy and network to extend similar formations in countries like, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa.”
At the meeting, which had in attendance, President Obasanjo, as the Council Patron, the President of the Council and the immediate past Director General of the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr. Nteranya Sanginga, the governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo and top government officials from DRC among other captains of industry, resolved to further move the Council to greater heights.
The Council decided that the next meeting will be held in Kinshasa after the Nigerian general elections between April 26-29, 2023.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adamu Garba, has alleged the reason former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Elder statesman, Edwin Clark endorsed Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, was because they can easily bully him to do their biddings.
Garba also claimed Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, got the support of the elites because they knew he could share the country with them.
The claims were contained in a post via his verified Twitter handle on Monday.
He said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, enjoys the support of the youths because they know he would protect their future.
He wrote, “Elders like Edwin Clark, Obasanjo, etc support Obi because they know he can be bullied to do their errands.
“Elites support Atiku because they know he can share the country with them.
“Youths support Tinubu because we know he can protect our country’s future.
President Muhammadu Buhari has been told that his appointments are lopsided and based on nepotism and mediocrity.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo who said this added that the present government has disregarded many of the things put in place to give all groups in the country a sense of belonging.
Obasanjo said this while delivering his remarks titled, ‘The Quest For Unity In Nigeria And The Role Of Unity Schools,’ at the 50th anniversary of Federal Government College, Kaduna, on Saturday.
He said, “First, I am concerned that the current state of our nation’s economy has widened the gulf of inequality and left many people in despair. Inflation is on the rise; poverty and hardship have returned to many households. The last decade has reversed many of the economic gains that were made in the first decade of the century. There is a general sense of hopelessness across the nation with seemingly uncontrollable insecurity.
“In addition to the economic hardship is political mischief. Never have we been so politically divided along religious, ethnic and other fault lines and deliberately so. Appointments in government are skewed and lopsided on basis of nepotism and mediocrity and disregard for merit and competence. Elections are here and may compound the problem.
“Political parties and politicians have now been emboldened to discard some of the things that were put in place to give all groups a sense of belonging. Exclusion is being taken as normal. Disunity stares us in the face and many of our leaders are more concerned about their selfish interests than the survival and health of our nation.
“Let me reiterate that the concerns being raised about the nature of the options before us in the Presidential elections for instance are real and should not be trifled with.
“Nigeria belongs to us all and no part of the country should be left in doubt about their place in this union on any basis whatsoever; ethnic, religious, language, region, culture or social standing.”
Obasanjo said the beauty of democracy is that before Nigerians cannot be imposed on them.
“If we choose to do nothing, we will only have ourselves to blame. If we choose to do the right thing, we will by so doing return this country on the right track; one which gives all our people a sense of belonging and a sense of unity of purpose and a stake in the project Nigeria; a project that will give all of us peace, security, stability, shared prosperity, hope and progress and a place within the comity of nations,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to reach the Presidency was unsuccessful as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, did not respond to calls or messages sent to him
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said that many states run by professors, retired military officers and professionals have not witnessed visible improvements. Obasanjo also noted that the political campaigns in Nigeria had been taken over by insults, lies and selfish interest instead of addressing issues of national interest and progress. The former head of state said this in his keynote address tagged ‘Respecting the principles of democracy’ at the international conference on ‘Deepening democratic culture and institutions’, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday. He stated that critical issues were discarded as intellectuals and technocrats were sidelined while minions took over the campaign and build iron-rings around candidates at all levels.
The former president said political party candidates are caged and milked opportunistically saying that “at the end of all the rigmarole, people get elected: they never believed in or shared a common platform, failed to carry Nigerians along, lacked a deep understanding of the trends and tendencies in the social and economic system.” He said, “Everyone in this room, whether we admit it or not, is an expert in Nigerian politics. We all have opinions and we have prescriptions for all the problems of Nigeria. Yet, the country is not making progress. Most of us are experts in what we know little or nothing about and ignoramus in what is our duty and responsibility. We have tried all sorts of regimes, ideologies, planning strategies and personalities in power: the so-called new breed did not show that they were different” “Equally, states run by professors, retired military officers and other professionals including teachers did not experience visible and substantial improvements. True, there have been some outstanding leaders at various levels of power but no tree has ever made a forest; the good ones are few and far in between and did not form critical mass. The lack of conversations across fault-lines and primordial proclivities mean that our leaders are unable to share ideas and have durable and sustained policies for long enough time. This prevents useful cooperation, collaboration, stability and sustainability. It means that whatever best practices are in one location remain there and may die there,” he pointed out.” Obasanjo lamented that after six decades of political independence, Nigeria leaders were not showing clear capacities to provide a transformative leadership that unites Nigerians and contains ethnic, religious, regional and clannish, selfish, class proclivities. He stressed that the ways in which Nigeria democracy is practiced had deepened contradictions, negative coalitions, distrust, disloyalty and unpatriotic tendencies within and between communities and constituencies all over the country
Wike, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, has been at loggerheads with the main opposition party leadership after the presidential primary that produced Atiku Abubakar as the PDP presidential candidate.
Wike and other aggrieved PDP governors tagged G5 have been calling for the resignation of PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
The Buhari Media Organisation, BMO, has called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to keep his political opinions to himself, as they have a history of being “faulty, erroneous and self-serving”.
BMO, in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, stated that Obasanjo had “more often than not provided political directions to the country that suited only his selfish interests and not the interest of the nation.”
According to the group, the former President “is notorious for pursuing self-centred ambition masked as national interest”, adding that it is on record how he had made attempts to push, mainly his ambition through the backdoor.
The group also faulted Obasanjo’s latest endorsement of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, arguing that Obi has no substance or clear vision for the country.
While urging eligible voters to key into the testimonials of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the group said he has a verifiable record and a vision for renewed hope for Nigeria.
It further added that Tinubu’s achievements and testimonies from Lagos State are strong indications of his capacity to steer the country in the right direction.
Part of the statement read: “The former President, in the pursuit of his selfish ambition, threw caution to the wind and endorsed the man he once swore never to support”
“Former President Obasanjo’s latest endorsement of the overhyped Mr Peter Obi, a candidate with no substance or clear vision for the country, whose track record of failure has left a foul stench still suffocating the people of Anambra, follows the Obasanjo pattern of directing Nigerians to the pit of hell because he does not have the keys to heaven.
“His political judgment is highly faulty, always erroneous, and naturally self-centred. “We urge eligible voters to key into the testimonials of the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who has a verifiable record and a vision for renewed hope for Nigeria.
“Asiwaju Tinubu is the only candidate that offers two good deals for the price of one vote: he will build on the solid foundation that President Buhari has put in place, which is evident to all Nigerians; and he would also usher in a renewed vigour in APC’s progressive agenda.”
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, refuted claims that he wanted a third term as President of the country, noting that he would have, if he did.
Obasanjo, who stated this at a virtual engagement organised by Africa Leadership Group, which has as theme, “Leadership and nation-building,” and anchored by Pastor Itua Ighodalo, said, “I never asked for a third term. If I wanted a third term, I would have got it. I am audacious enough to know how to get it.”
He noted that getting debt relief for the country, which was almost impossible, was a pointer, as he “got it.”

He, however, stated that the biggest problem of Africa today is leadership, saying it imparts on governance and nation building.
According to him, “Nigeria is where we are because of leadership. We must decisively look for men and women who have the character, attributes, skill and attitude that we need for leadership that will deliver this country.”
When asked if he would mobilise former head of states to support the candidature of the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, having given him an open endorsement, Obasanjo said he would not go on campaign train for anybody.
“I am not on his campaign train. I do not belong to any political party. I will not join any campaign train. I’ve said what is best for the country.”

Speaking on the Nigerian Constitution, Obasanjo called for an amendment, noting that no constitution is perfect. “Some people blame the constitution for everything in Nigeria. Of course, our constitution is not perfect, and there is no constitution that is sacrosanct and it can be amended.”
He said part of what should be included in the amended constitution is devolution of power.
Obasanjo also queried how Nigerian lawmakers apportion salaries to themselves, noting that they go beyond the boundary of their lawmaking to give themselves obscene salaries.

“The lawmakers have no right to fix their own salary. The salary and bonus of our lawmakers is supposed to be fixed by revenue mobilisation but they took it upon themselves to do that. Where is that done? When I was there, whatever I believed should not be paid, since I have to release the fund, I don’t release. There was a time they threatened to impeach me.”
While lamenting the amount of petroleum products that are being stolen, which he said are mind boggling, he said the level of corruption, kidnapping and banditry in the country is worrisome.
“With this type of situation, the economy will not grow the way it ought. People will not come and invest in a country that is not secure and safe. Unless there is investment there will not be growth.
“We don’t have absolute control of our oil industry. Since the discovery of oil in commercial quantities in 1956 up to today, we are still flaring gas. The amount of money we are flaring in gas is colossal, those who are exploring and exploiting our oil, didn’t feel they need the gas, if all we have done is to produce that gas for our domestic use by now, our situation would have been different. ”

MEANWHILE, Obasanjo has denied the allegation that he was planning to rig the 2023 presidential election in favour of Obi.
Unverified media reports had alleged that Obasanjo gave the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) N5 billion to rig next month’s presidential election in favour of Obi.
“The former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is not responsible for the viral stories on some discredited platforms on the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria,” his spokesman, Kehinde Akinyemi, said in a statement issued yesterday.
Advertisements
Akinyemi, Special Assistant on Media to the former President, stressed that the viral story was completely false.
“Also, apart from the letters dated January 1, 2023 respectively, one which was addressed to the Nigerian youths and the other to Prof. Toyin Falola on his 70th birthday, there has been no other public or private letter written to anybody by the former President.
“The reading public is for the umpteenth time reminded that only a statement duly signed by His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo or by his Media Assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi are to be allowed into the media space.
“If need be, necessary checks can be made to confirm the authenticity of such documents before publication to avoid any embarrassment,” the statement said
The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu has disclosed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo punished him while he was governor of Lagos State.
Tinubu explained that the decision was not a personal punishment but an action taken against the Lagos State Government.
He said Obasanjo took the decision against his administration because he was in the opposition party.
The APC flagbearer spoke during his presidential campaign rally in Benin City, Edo State against the backdrop of Obasanjo’s endorsement of the Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
He accused the former president of frustrating his efforts of solving the challenges of electricity supply during his tenure as governor.

Tinubu also accused the then Obasanjo’s administration of diverting and embezzling money meant to solve electricity challenges.
According to Tinubu: “I brought Enron to solve electricity problem and help Lagos economy but Obasanjo and PDP frustrated it. They punished me and Lagos people and even began deducting our money.
“I created Local Governments in Lagos to accelerate development and create employment for our people but Obasanjo siezed our allocation and punished us for that.
“That was wickedness and such a man said he endorsed a man for you to vote as President. Can Obasanjo recommend a leader for anyone in Nigeria? A man who does not know the way cannot show the way.
“They punished me as Lagos State governor, not personal punish but the entire Lagos State was punished.”
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the significance of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s endorsement of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Obasanjo expressed his support for Obi in a six-page open letter addressed particularly to youths on Sunday, a move embraced by the LP and belittled my several politicians in the ruling party and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Deputy Director, Media and Publicity, APC PCC, Ali Muhammed Ali, during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Politics on Wednesday, described Obasanjo’s decision to address Nigerian youths specifically as strategic.
In the wake of the endorsement, the former president’s popularity and electoral influence have been a bone of contention with supporters citing his pivotal role in resolving the two-year Ethiopia-Tigray crisis last November.
However, Ali’s position is that Obasanjo’s influence abroad has no bearing on his electoral value.

“Externally, beyond the shores of Nigeria, you can’t dismiss Obasanjo with a wave of the hand, but back home, he’s a paper tiger. It should worry some people that he is actually speaking to young people. And anywhere across the globe, young people are agents of change.
“We’ve seen that happen with the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the Arab Spring in Egypt. So, young people actually are the target there and young people are largely unaware of the foxy nature of Obasanjo. Obasanjo oscillates between extremes,” the APC stalwart said.
Ali debated the electoral value of the former president, saying that some people see perception as reality.
“The optics is going to be seen that Obasanjo actually is in support. What’s, after all, an endorsement? It’s an expression of support,” he said.
“And given his once-upon-a-time fame and influence, you would say it’s good to be seen to have Obasanjo in your corner.
“But if you look at it – [speaking of ] electoral capital, electoral asset – like they say, in Washington, there are no kids, there are only voters. So how much of that would translate into actual electoral asset?”

‘He Feels The Pains Too’ However, LP’s Deputy National Chairman, Ayo Olorunfemi, described the endorsement as a big deal and Obasanjo as a man of integrity.
According to him, the ex-president, like many Nigerians, feels the pain brought on by allegedly corrupt leaders.
“We’re looking at those few Nigerians that have stolen our money and believe that they are so powerful. They have weaponised poverty and they believe that money can do everything. No, Nigerians are departing from that narrative,” he said.
“He’s telling them right now that ‘you can’t continue to suffer in this manner. You don’t have any reason to suffer in this manner, and therefore, I am giving this guy a clean bill.’
“[Obasanjo is saying] ‘I’m giving this guy an endorsement, so that Nigerians will know that [with] the benefit of experience, this person is better than every other candidate, particularly those candidates from the two so-called major political parties.

“These are the people that ganged up against us and threw this country into this mess.”
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised doubts over the electoral value of the endorsement of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, by elder statesmen, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Others who have thrown their weight behind Obi amid the ongoing election campaigns are the leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo; and Niger Delta leader, Edwin Clark.
However, a member of the Media and Publicity Committee, PDP PCC, Tunde Olusunle, during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Politics on Wednesday, called to question the timing of Obasanjo’s endorsement in particular.
“Perhaps if this endorsement was coming before now, or perhaps if Obasanjo actually went out of his way to help in a leadership grooming and recruitment process, maybe things would have been a lot better [for LP],” he said.

“The endorsement of Obasanjo, Baba Adebanjo, Edwin Clark [is] fine, but what does this translate into? On the day of the election, everybody holds his PVC, goes to the polling unit, casts his vote.
“Unfortunately, as we are today, not too many leaders are going to have people queueing with them to the polling station.
“If you’ve been watching social media in the last few days, people have been critiquing Obasanjo saying, ‘When you supported the PDP, years ago, in your own polling unit, PDP did as much as maybe 20 votes, while the APC did 87. Meanwhile, on that occasion, you didn’t even support the APC.’”
According to Olusunle, critics of the former president are trying to send him a message that victory goes beyond verbal pronouncements.
“[By] May this year, it would be 16 years since Obasanjo left office. A lot has happened in between: new allegiances, stronger convictions by the people, people have gone through a lot, become more single-minded, decided to take their own fate in their hands.
“Yes, it is good for the optics, but I don’t really know whether it’s going to become much on polls day,” he said.

Weapon Of Poverty But LP’s Deputy National Chairman, Ayo Olorunfemi, described the endorsement as a big deal and Obasanjo as a man of integrity.
According to him, Obasanjo, like many Nigerians, feels the pain brought on by corruption.

“These are the people that ganged up against us and threw this country into this mess.”
The South West Agenda (SWAGA), a support group rooting for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu, has dismissed the endorsement of Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi by the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.
The National Chairman of SWAGA, Senator Dayo Adeyeye, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital on Tuesday during a party organized for members of the campaign group in Ekiti, Ondo, Kogi and other states, said the victory of the former governor of Lagos state won’t be affected by the decision of the former president.
Adeyeye, who explained that Tinubu’s track record and contributions to nation building in the last three decades would work in his favor above other contenders, promised that SWAGA would deliver 14 million votes in the South West for the APC candidate.
Dismissing the endorsement of the Labour Party candidate, the APC chieftain, who is the director of support groups in the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), stated that former president Obasanjo has the right to support whoever he wants but added that his endorsement won’t have impact on the outcome of the election come February 25.
According to him, “The endorsement of the Labour Party candidate will have absolutely no negative impact on the election of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; we are in the south West here and we know the politics of the region.

“Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has the right to endorse any candidate, and it is also our constitutional right to support and canvass for whoever we like. I can tell you that the people of South West, even the people of Egba land where Obasanjo comes from, will vote massively for Tinubu and he will win.
“Don’t forget as SWAGA, we have promised to deliver 14 million votes, we have not changed our mind on this important promise and we have been working towards fulfilling it , even more than that figure. There is no reason that anybody will not support him because he has done well for the country by fighting for the democracy we are all enjoying today.
“We have met over 300 traditional rulers in Yoruba land, and the candidate himself has done that too and all of them have endorsed him. Afenifere has endorsed him including all Yoruba leaders, I don’t think what Obasanjo has done will have any impact on the chances of Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming election.”
On the issues raised by Obasanjo in his letter regarding the capacity and competence of other presidential candidates, Adeyeye said that Tinubu has proved to be prepared for the task of rebuilding the nation with his practicable action plan different from his other contenders.
“Talking about health, the health of a man is in the hands of God. Let me tell you that many of those who said President Muhammadu Buhari will die in 2015, many of those who said that have died. I don’t think we should play God concerning the health of individuals.
“Who is more hardworking than Tinubu as we approach the election ? None of the candidates. You can see he is meeting critical stakeholders day and night. You can be engrossed in rumours and speculation, I can say this man is fit and competent to be the president of our nation.
“I think President Obasanjo will continue to raise issues. Nobody will ever be good in the eyes of the former president, even if Obafemi Awolowo was to be the president, he will see reasons to criticize him. In his eyes, nobody is good and better than him,” he said.
On his part, a former member of the House of Representatives, Oyetunde Ojo revealed that SWAGA would continue to work and mobilize for the presidential ambition of Tinubu ahead of the election, noting that the group would not be distracted by the antics of the opposition.
Ojo said, “That Obasanjo’s endorsement is one man’s opinion which is not the whole country’s opinion. He won’t take the majority opinion of Nigerians who are ready to vote Tinubu for the overall good of the nation.
“We have been on the field as a group canvassing for Tinubu and we will work till the last minute in February because our principal didn’t believe in laziness, he is everywhere talking to the people.”
The spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo has again taken a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying he is using ‘Emi Lo Kan’ to endorse the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi. (Watch Video Here)
‘Emi Lokan’ was popularised by the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu in his June 2022 address in Abeokuta, Ogun State as he pushed for the party’s ticket then.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Keyamo said Tinubu was not addressing Nigerians by saying it was his turn to govern Nigeria. He stated that the APC presidential candidate was talking to the party’s delegates instead.
“We saw in Emi Lo Kan, he was not talking to Nigerians. He was speaking to APC delegates in Ogun State where he said ‘look, if you want to say those who have invested in this party, it is my turn,’” Keyamo stated. (Watch Video Here)
“Give me the chance to fly the flag of this party. Was he talking to Nigerians? He was not but yet they keep repeating it 1,000 times so that they will look as if he is talking to Nigerians and claiming some kind of moral high grounds.
“Obasanjo too was also using Emi Lo Kan in another sense. He was saying that it is the turn of some other people to produce the presidency and that is why he is endorsing somebody.”
Obasanjo had on January 1 backed Obi as his preferred contestant for the 2023 general elections, describing the former Anambra State Governor as his mentee who has an edge in next month’s polls. (Watch Video Here)
“None of the contestants is a saint but when one compares their character, antecedent, their understanding, knowledge, discipline, and vitality that they can bring to bear and the great efforts required to stay focused on the job, particularly looking at where the country is today and with the experience on the job that I personally had, Peter Obi as a mentee has an edge,” he stated.
Spokesperson of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo, says former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s endorsement of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, won’t affect his principal.
Obasanjo formally endorsed Obi for the February 25 election, saying that the former Anambra State Governor has an edge over other candidates. But Keyamo has waved off the development, maintaining that Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won’t be impacted.
According to the APC PCC spokesperson, Obasanjo’s action proves that as Atiku’s former boss, he does not think that the PDP candidate deserves to be President this time around.
He tweeted on Sunday: “Quite within OBJ’s right to endorse anyone, but bad for PDP in 2 ways: (1.) Atiku’s former boss does not think he deserves to be President this time around (2) The little support OBJ gave PDP in 2019 & they failed, he has taken that away to LP. No effect at all on @officialABAT.”
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has endorsed the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi as his preferred contestant for the 2023 general elections.
In his 2023 New Year message personally signed by the ex-President and made available to Channels Television by his spokesman, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo described Obi as his mentee and said the former Anambra State Governor has an edge in the February 25, 2023 election. (Watch Video Here)
Obasanjo said, “None of the contestants is a saint but when one compares their character, antecedent, their understanding, knowledge, discipline, and vitality that they can bring to bear and the great efforts required to stay focused on the job, particularly looking at where the country is today and with the experience on the job that I personally had, Peter Obi as a mentee has an edge.
“Others like all of us have what they can collectively contribute to the new dispensation to liberation, restoration, and salvaging of Nigeria. (Watch Video Here)
“One other important point to make about Peter is that he is a needle with thread attached to it from North and South and he may not get lost.
“In other words, he has people who can pull his ears, if and when necessary. He has a young and able running mate with a clean track record of achievement both in public and private life.” (Watch Video Here)
The newly appointed Director General (DG) of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the Labour Party (LP), Akin Osuntokun has disclosed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is “fully” in support of the 2023 campaign for the LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Osuntokun who made a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday was asked if Obasanjo is “fully backing” Obi’s campaign, to which he responded with an emphatic “Yes!” (Watch Video Here)
This comes barely 24 hours after the LP announced the former presidential aide as its new presidential campaign DG, following the resignation of Doyin Okupe whom a Federal High Court in Abuja on December 19 found guilty of violating the Money Laundering Act.
Speaking on the former president’s close relationship with him and Okupe, Osuntokun said, “He is a father figure. That’s a better description of the relationship. He’s a father figure to us, not (Watch Video Here) an ‘ally.’ Assuming that what you are saying is correct, am I not qualified for the job? Am I not competent for it?”
Asked if his appointment was based on the recommendation of the former president, Osuntokun said, “You’ll have to ask the presidential candidate, my principal, whether it was an Obasanjo slot and that was how the position was filled.
“Don’t forget that I was the immediate zonal coordinator of the campaign in South-West, so this is essentially an elevation. It is not that I’m just joining the campaign organisation, but if you say that it’s Obasanjo’s slot, people have different perceptions and you’re at liberty to say so.” (Watch Video Here)
The campaign DG argued that the focus should not be on who is behind his appointment, but what he brings to the table.
“Forget about who recommended me or whether I’m filling the slot of somebody. That is not an issue. It’s my capacity and competence to do the job that matters most. If Obasanjo recommends a very competent person who will lead the party to victory, why should I have any issues with that. For me, it’s a non-issue,” he said. (Watch Video Here)
Speaking on Okupe’s removal, Osuntokun described the ouster as a bittersweet experience. According the bitter part has to do with the circumstances of his predecessor’s exit.
A photo combination of Akin Osuntokun, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Peter Obi
“That’s the first judgment (Watch Video Here) I’ve heard that was essentially exculpating the person standing before her. She said it was an honest mistake — that is, the judge, not the lawyer of the defence. (For) the party, in such circumstances, for me, it’s not a good thing.
“He deserves a better exit than that. Nonetheless, life must go on. I’m back to familiar territory. I’m used to presidential campaigns. I like two before — 2003 and 2007 — as political adviser, and as a campaign coordinator for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011,” he said. (Watch Video Here)
Osuntokun however noted that he is no longer a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), arguing that a party’s campaign organisation must not be confused with the party hierarchy.
“There is a sense of deja vu; when I was appointed the director of publicity by President Obasanjo in 2022, I was not a member of PDP. But once I assume the office, then of course effectively, I’ve become a member of the Labour Party. So, to that extent, I’m (Watch Video Here) a member,” he said.
Osuntokun also addressed the alleged conflict of interest resulting from his name appearing on website of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) senatorial candidate for Ekiti central in the 2023 elections.
Asked if he was still in the race for the senatorial seat, he said, “No. I’ve abandoned it if that is what you want to say. The campaign office has issued a press release in that (Watch Video Here) respect. The question you should ask is this, what law have I breached in accepting the appointment? What law has the presidential candidate who appointed me breached in appointing me?
“I can’t help anybody who wants to pursue notoriety as a way of life. The man who is doing this is supposedly the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (Abayomi Arabambi). Ask him, why would a National Publicity Secretary of a party do that to his own party? (Watch Video Here)
“It’s a redundant question. It’s of no consequence at all, whether legally or constitutionally. There is no moral burden at all. Joining the Obi campaign, for me, is a higher national priority than any other aspiration.”
The Labour Party, LP, has appointed former Political Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Akin Osuntokun as the new Director General of its Presidential Campaign.
This was confirmed by the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, in Abuja, on Tuesday. (Watch Video Here)
According to Abure, the decision was reached after comprehensive consultations with party stakeholders across board.
Osuntokun will now replace Doyin Okupe who resigned from the position last week.
Okupe stepped down from the position following a federal high court judgment (Watch Video Here) which convicted him of money laundering.
The court sentenced him to two years imprisonment but with an option to pay a N500,000 fine on each count, totalling N13 million.
Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his Vice, Atiku Abubakar of spending $16.5 billion on the nation’s power sector without any results.
Tinubu said Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, confirmed it himself that the money was spent on electricity between 1999 and 2007.
Recall with Noble Reporters Media that Tinubu was the Lagos State governor during the eight years rule of Obasanjo and Atiku.
While he was answering questions at a town hall meeting held in Calabar, capital of Cross River on Tuesday, the APC candidate maintained that PDP under Obasanjo and Atiku failed to provide electricity for Nigerians, urging Nigerians not to vote for the party in 2023.
“Power is the biggest human discovery in the last 1000 years. Tell me what you can do without power. That is why the so-called PDP must never come back. They spent 16.5 (billion) dollars some years back, Obasanjo and Atiku.

“Atiku said it with his mouth that they collected our money from even local governments, states and others, but they didn’t know what they did with it. They could not provide a kilowatt to roast a corn. What they have forgotten is that the colonial masters left a transmission line for us in a centralised form,” he said.
Tinubu alleged that he was punished by Obasanjo and Atiku for bringing power to Lagos because he was not a member of the PDP.
“I brought power for Lagos State, instead of embracing intellect and good idea, they (Obasanjo and Atiku) punished me for it because I was in the opposition.
“Never again should you give them any opportunity for power. We gave them opportunity, they balkanized the power, balkanized the transmission. They didn’t know it is a highway for evacuation of electricity, they didn’t know it should be maintained, they didn’t know it should be decentralized. Generation, they balkanized it, shared it among their friends; distribution, no metre, they give you estimated billing. Reject them. Any government under PDP is a curse,” Tinubu said angrily

He disclosed this at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo National Secretariat in Enugu State.
Obasanjo had visited the Secretariat in the company of Afenifere’s leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo and Obi.

“So, what are you going to frighten or threaten me with? The only thing that my senior brother (Adebanjo) hasn’t done is that he hasn’t shed his blood but he has gone to prison but we will leave that aside.”
He said Nigeria’s problem was more national than ethnic.
The former president lamented that Nigeria was yet to have a leader with the right type of character.
“The problem we have in our hands in Nigeria is not ethnic. It is national. And for me, the most important thing in a leader is character.

He spoke during the APC presidential/governorship campaign rally in Warri, Delta State.
Tinubu said Atiku fought his former boss over how they spent money on projects for their girlfriends.
He also noted that the PDP can not be trusted with governance due to the in-fighting within the party.
“Our rivals have no shame, when they are fighting in public; how can they think of governance?

Obasanjo hailed Amechi’s “brilliant career” which straddled the political and community leadership in the country.
He recalled that Amechi joined Chiefs Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Anthony Enahoro, etc., to demand Nigeria’s independence from colonial masters, Britain.
Obasanjo said the deceased was a selfless and patriotic nationalist, an indefatigable politician and an unyielding activist.
“Chief Amechi will also be remembered as one who gave of his best as a member of the first Federal Cabinet.
“A decent and amiable gentleman, he commanded the respect and admiration of his peers and associates.”
The statement added that Amechi was an exemplary citizen who demonstrated that politics was an avenue for service, not “mindless enrichment”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the growing spate of insecurity in Nigeria would be curtailed by State Police, not community policing.
Obasanjo made the suggestion when the leadership of the National Association of Ex-local Government Chairmen in Nigeria visited him in Abeokuta.
A statement by spokesman Kehinde Akinyemi said pioneer National Chairman, Hon. Albert Asipa led the delegation.

Obasanjo commended the formation of the body, noting that some local chairmen in the country were better than some top elected leaders.
Responding to one of the speakers, Chinwe Monu-Olarewaju, who spoke on the creation of community police, the ex-Head of State said the idea should be upgraded.
“Our situation in Nigeria concerns everyone, particularly the case of terrorism. It has gotten over the issue of community police.
“It is now State Police. It is from that State Police that we can now be talking about community police,” he said.
Obasanjo advocated the strengthening of the traditional system and local government administration which he prepared during the Murtala/Obasanjo administration.
“I believe there is a need to enable that tier of government to work truly like a local government. They have their own Executive, Judiciary and Legislature.
“They were working and were very visible. Building and managing roads, looking into education, health, local administration, agriculture. But they were all gone,” he lamented.
Obasanjo added that the experience of the ex-chairmen in local government administration was enough to aspire for higher posts.
Obasanjo, who was presented with a letter of a Life Patron, assured that he would look into their request and always be available on request.
A veteran journalist, Mustapha Ogunsakin has recounted how Vice President Yemi Osinbajo rejected former President, Olusegun Obasanjo’s offer to become Attorney-General of the Federal in 2005.
Ogunsakin said Osinbajo rejected Obasanjo’s offer and stayed loyal to Bola Tinubu, who was then governor of Lagos State.
Osinbajo served eight years as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State when Tinubu was the governor between 1999 and 2007.
However, Ogunsakin said Obasanjo made the offer following Osinbajo’s sterling qualities as then Commissioner.
The veteran journalist disclosed this while addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday.
He was reacting to reactions trailing Osinbajo’s presidential declaration.
Following his declaration, Osinbajo was accused of betraying Tinubu who is also running for the Presidency.
Dismissing this claim, Ogunsakin said: “In 2005, President Obasanjo invited Osinbajo to take appointment as the Attorney-General of the Federation after Chief Akin Olujimi left office. Obasanjo saw the sterling qualities and performance that Osinbajo had as Attorney General of Lagos.
“The president without informing Bola Tinubu, the then Lagos State Governor, offered the post to Osinbajo who was then Lagos State Attorney-General. The first thing Osinbajo did was to inform his principal, Tinubu, who gave him a free hand to take his decision.”
He disclosed that Osinbajo made a request to Obasanjo to release Lagos State Council funds, but the former president refused.
Upon his refusal, Osinbajo was said to have rejected Obasanjo’s offer to become AGF.
“Obasanjo replied that Osinbajo should first take the appointment and then advise him as Attorney-General of the Federation on the matter. Osinbajo went underground and for weeks Obasanjo could no longer reach him.
“It was obvious to the then President that Osinbajo deliberately avoided him; he went on to appoint Chief Bayo Ojo as his Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
“Osinbajo rejected the position of Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and stayed with Tinubu; nobody complained then. He did not betray Tinubu then.
“But now when it is convenient for them, some political and religious bigots are shouting betrayal! Everyone knows that if you want to hear the story of how your father met your mother, join politics,” he said.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State on Tuesday met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Okowa, who was on a private visit to Obasanjo, met the octogenarian at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Penthouse residence, in Abeokuta.
Speaking on the visit, the governor said Obasanjo and all stakeholders including traditional rulers should be consulted in finding lasting solutions to the insecurity and economic situations battling the country.
A statement released by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, revealed that Okowa lamented that the situation in the country was getting very troubled.
According to him, the troubled situation “has the capacity to destroy our economy, which is not in our best interest.”
He stressed that the situation is getting worrisome, saying “it’s time we all have hands on deck to be able to find solutions.”
He alleged that “the APC run government cannot alone be able to deal with it and they need to find a wide and far-reaching consultation, not with those in government alone, but, all stakeholders, particularly those who have been part of running this country before and now, including even religious leaders we need to sit together and discuss the way forward.”

On his 2023 presidential ambition, Okowa stated he was yet to make up his mind on whether or not to contest, saying, “finding solutions to the nation’s problems is more important than the Presidential race for him.”
He disclosed that his visit to Obasanjo was to share ideas with him on the situation of the nation and to discuss with him some issues concerning his state, saying, “he willingly advised me.”
He said, “As of today, I have not made up my mind. The important thing is not about myself, it is about the nation, Nigeria. The future of hope. What level of consensus can we build in order to achieve our dream? Our dream is to see Nigeria begin to have an improvement in our security and in the level of economy. These are some things we have not achieved at the moment.
“The country is so stressed, so much stress in the land. So much unemployment, so much inflation and unfortunately the things that unite us are badly threatened and we cannot even be sure of tomorrow. These are the things we must discuss. We must all come together to stop this tide of drift at the moment, that is the type of things we should be more concerned about.”
