“We may have our differences. We may have disagreed in the past but the best thing that can be given to a man like George Obiozor is the last respect and honour.

“The Igbo race has lost a gem. Nigeria has lost a star and Imo has lost a man that can best be described as a global encyclopedia.

“But we take heart knowing full well that as generous as he was on earth, as God-fearing as he was, that Almighty God will have mercy on him.”

Uzodinma also urged the late Obiozor’s family to take heart and put their trust in God.

In a condolence message, former President Olusegun Obasanjo described the deceased as an outstanding diplomat who brought his unique knowledge and experience to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the international community.

“Amb. Obiozor had no doubt come a long way in his multi-faceted career as a political scientist, policy analyst, administrator and diplomat.

“It is instructive that his name, in the last four decades, has become something of a recurring decimal in our foreign affairs and international relations.

Across the country, the citizens face severe difficulty in having access to the new notes, just as a litre of petrol now goes for over N450. 00.

The development has thrown families into untold hardships, with the new notes now being sold.

In a statement on Friday by the National President of the Ohanaeze Youths, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, he said the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, should take action before it is too late.

The youths warned that the EndSARS protest would be a child’s play compared to what may befall the nation in the next few days.

“How do we explain a situation where our poor parents can no longer feed their children?

“We can no longer keep quiet in the midst of this avoidable chaos. There is no doubt that the policy as rolled out by the CBN was a good one, but there is also incontrovertible evidence that the apex bank was ill-prepared for the smooth implementation.

“This is why we warn that enough is enough. If the CBN cannot make the new notes available, it should allow the commercial banks commence circulation of the old notes pending such a time when the new notes would be available in the right quantity.

“Anything short of this is an invitation to anarchy and avoidable chaos as Nigerians are running out of patience. Images and videos from across the country say it all,” the group stated.

“The implication of all these is that some persons are desperately working to truncate the 2023 general elections.

“We are beginning to see this as a grand-plot to throw the nation into an avoidable crisis and find reasons to postpone the polls.

“Let it be on record that Emefiele and the NNPC would be held responsible should anything happen to the country’s democracy,” the youth leaders warned

“Ndigbo’s response to Simon Ekpa’s plea is that he should return the $1m to the disfavoured and unpopular presidential candidate he’s working with. He must quickly return all he had collected (to his paymasters) in other to destroy the support base of Peter Obi through his old-fashioned mantra of, ‘No Election in Biafra Land’, and rescind his intentions to declare a four-day sit-at-home from 22nd to 26th of February 2023 with a view to disrupt the 2023 presidential elections in the South-East.

“Ndigbo will resist every attempt by Simon Ekpa to scare away voters in the South-East and South-South through his planned four-day sit-at-home. Our suspicion was reinforced after Ekpa asked for forgiveness and we knew that his plans to boycott the elections in southeastern Nigeria were to stop ‘ObiDient’ devotees from voting for Peter Obi and lessen the strength of the South-East.

Speaking with 𝕹𝖔𝖇𝖑𝖊 𝕽𝖊𝖕𝖔𝖗𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖘’ known Media on the activities of gunmen linked to Ekpa, Isiguzoro reiterated his stance on a plot to destabilise the 2023 elections in the Southeast using Ekpa.

According to Isiguzoro: “This madness of sit-at-home and incessant killings and insecurity we are witnessing in the Southeast can be traced to the continuous incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, which Simon Ekpa is taking undue advantage of.

“Ekpa is an opportunist, a fame and fortune seeker who saw the window and lapses of Kanu’s detention as an opportunity for him to venture into his journey of amassing wealth from politicians and destroying the people of the Southeast.

“The only cure to this madness of Simon Ekpa is a passionate appeal to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow the leader of IPOB to address Ndigbo possibly this February before the elections, because there is a grand conspiracy by some external enemies of Ndigbo, and they are using Ekpa to shortchange and ensure that there is an election boycott in the Southeast.

“The only cure to this Ekpa’s madness is for Buhari to allow Kanu, even if it’s a five-minute broadcast, because Kanu has continued to say through his lawyers that these killings and insecurity in the Southeast should end. The activities of unknown gunmen instigated by Ekpa should end, and why there has been no effect on those messages is that the people doubt if those messages are from Nnamdi Kanu.

“So, in order to have a peaceful election, the Federal Government should give Nnamdi Kanu a five-minute broadcast to talk to the people of the Southeast; this would end Ekpa and his madness.”

Insecurity: I did not order cops back to barracks – Enugu CP disowns viral signal.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police has refuted an alleged order asking policemen to return to the barracks with immediate effect.

The alarm followed an alleged order from the CP, asking police officers and men under various units and formations in the State to remain in their barracks until further notice.

The said order, quoted by Sun Newspapers, was contained in an alleged signal by the Commissioner of Police to all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Heads of Department, and Heads of Tactical Units in the State.

“Given the prevalent security situation in Enugu State, the Commissioner of Police has ordered, with immediate effect, that all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Heads of Department, Heads of Tactical Units in the state and the officers and personnel are, hereby, confounded to barracks until further notice.

“Any officer who violates this sworn-in shall be isolated for severe disciplinary action. Make this subject of lecture to your personnel, and confirm compliance by return signal,” the signal stated.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo had, while reacting to the said order, demanded the immediate removal of the CP.

However, when contacted, the DSP Daniel Ndukwe, Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, described the purported order as unfounded, false, misleading and mischievous.

The statement issued by the Command reads, “Enugu State Police Command is in receipt of a viral social media message and picture of a purported Police Wireless Message, stating that the Command’s authority has ordered its personnel to ‘desert the street, their offices, duty posts and remain confined to barracks due to prevalent security challenges facing the entire State’.

“It, therefore, wishes to categorically state that the report is not only unfounded, false and misleading, but clearly the handiwork of mischief-makers, seeking for avenues to cause panic amongst the peace-loving citizens of the State.

“Consequently, it is important to state, for the avoidance of doubt, that the Commissioner of Police did not at any point issue such orders, directing personnel of the Command to abandon their duties and be confined to barracks, as purported and being circulated, neither did he delegate any of his immediate lieutenants to issue same.

“It is also very important to clarify that the Nigeria Police Force remains a fully regimented agency of government, with clear and defined channels of internal and external communication. Hence, would not have relayed a message meant for internal to its external audience, as being circulated on social media.

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani has enjoined the citizenry to disregard such baseless narrative, while reiterating that the Command remains focused and committed to professionally discharge its duties on a daily basis, in line with the statutory mandates of the Nigeria Police Force.”

Remove Enugu CP now – Ohanaeze sends SOS to IGP

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has demanded the immediate removal of the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani.

Ohanaeze said the lives of the Enugu State residents were now in total jeopardy under the Commissioner.

The alarm followed an alleged order from the CP, asking police officers and men under various units and formations in the State to remain in their barracks until further notice.

The said order quoted by Sun Newspapers was contained in a signal by the Commissioner of Police to all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Heads of Department, and Heads of Tactical Units in the State.

The signal ordered all officers and personnel in the State to remain in their barracks until further notice, warning that any official or personnel who violated the order shall be disciplined.

Within the past few weeks there have been security breaches in the State, with both residents and security personnel as victims.

DAILY POST reports that the latest was on Saturday, during which no fewer than five civilians were killed by hoodlums enforcing sit-at-home. A police patrol vehicle was also burnt in the process.

However, in an open letter to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Alkali Baba Usman, Ohanaeze said any delay in the removal of the CP would spell doom for the residents of the State.

Ohanaese said in the letter signed by Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the National President of the Youth Council that “the signal in circulation means that the CP has abdicated his responsibility.

“Before now, we had earlier raised the alarm that there is a connivance between some security personnel and criminals ravaging the State in forms of kidnappers and Fulani herdsmen.

“Most of the roads in Enugu State are now safe haven for these marauders; Eha-Amufu, in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area is now a shadow of itself, with thousands of residents now living in neighbouring towns as Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.

“But what have we got? A Police Chief who should lead the war to the den of these hoodlums has handed over the State to the criminals by pulling his men back to the barracks.

“It is in the light of this that we prevail on you, the IGP Sir, to immediately remove the CP from Enugu State as he has shown lack of capacity to police Enugu State.

“We are sending the SOS to you on behalf of the distressed people of Enugu State whose fate now hangs in the balance.

“Boko Haram and bandits have ravaged many Northern States for over a decade now but we have never seen any CP recall his men to barracks. The directive by the Enugu CP is not only weird but unprofessional.

“The Police Service Commission should be alive to its responsibility and not let this negligence of duty slide.

“We also urge the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to beam their searchlight on the happenings in Enugu State, as our people are now endangered species.

“We alert the entire Nigerians and the international community that there is a looming genocide and massacre of Enugu State residents.

“Enugu is now in a total state of anarchy and the time to stop it is now,” Ohanaeze declared.

Meanwhile, when contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, SP Danile Ndukwe denied the existence of any such order.

“It is not possible,” Ndukwe stated, describing the said signal as “fake, malicious, mischievous and unfounded.”

BVAS: Youths will shut down Nigeria – Ohanaeze wants APC chair, Adamu on watchlist

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has reacted to the fresh controversy over the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS and the INEC Results Viewing Portal, IReV, for the 2023 general elections.

The OYC said Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of the APC, should be placed on watchlist by security agencies and the international community for allegedly toeing a path capable of destroying Nigeria.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Noble Reporters Media reports that Adamu had on Wednesday, while speaking to a delegation from the Commonwealth Election Observation Mission, claimed that Nigeria was not yet ready for such technology.

He said, “Our concern is how ready are we to deploy some of these technologies as regards transmission.

“To transmit results, every part of the nation Nigeria I’m not sure that the network covers it.

“I know that even in parts of Abuja, there is no network, and we have from now till February when in substantial parts of the country, there is no electricity.”

Reacting to the development, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike accused the APC of trying to truncate Nigeria’s democracy.

Okwu said Adamu’s stand was a confirmation of earlier rumour of an ignoble attempt to remove the INEC chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood from office over his insistence to deploy technology to enhance the credibility of the electoral process.

“We are in deep shock over the unpopular statement made by the APC National Chairman, Senator Adamu. It is even more unpardonable considering that it is coming from the chairman of the ruling party.

“In countries of the world, a ruling party is expected to be in the vanguard of advancing democracy, but that is no longer the case with the APC.

“It is now confirmed that the Adamu-led APC is behind the rumoured plot to oust the INEC boss from office.

“However, his plot has failed; he has exposed himself as we the Nigerian youths will not let that happen.

“The 2023 general election is between the forces of darkness that have held this country down for decades and the future generation. There will be no hiding place for failed politicians and a million Adamu cannot frustrate that resolve.”

The youth group urged the INEC to “remain steadfast as the masses are with you. The commission should not bow to the wicked pressure as we shall march the evil forces; we shall resist the wicked forces who do not mean well for Nigeria.

“The youths will shut down this country should anyone attempt to toy with the future of Nigeria.

“The highest legacy President Muhammdu Buhari has bequeathed for this country is signing the amended Electoral Act and we shall give the INEC all the support to ensure its full application.

“We also urge President Buhari to stand with the masses and be wary of the likes of Adamu who are pursuing a selfish agenda.”

Nigerians facing unjust humiliation under Bawa’s watch – Ohanaeze

Advertisements

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has again taken a dig at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, under Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The group, in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday, said the EFCC under Bawa was at an all time low.

It, therefore, urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to take urgent steps aimed at saving the anti-corruption commission.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mazi Okwu Nnabuike and Comrade Obinna Achionye, the National President and the National Secretary, respectively, of the group.

While recalling what they called “the gestapo style with which the EFCC operatives invaded the residence of Senator Rochas Okorocha in Abuja, the Federal Character Territory, the Ohanaeze youths said Bawa had destroyed the reputation of the federal agency.

“The Zamfara State Government under the administration of Governor Bello Matawalle is also been harassed unnecessarily by agents of the EFCC. Governor Matawalle, who has restored some level of normalcy in Zamfara State does not in any way deserve such a reckless distraction. We have no doubt that the move, like many others, is politically induced. Enough of the media trial and witch-hunt. The Governor must be allowed to concentrate.

“The EFCC has never been this ridiculed in such a manner as we are seeing under Bawa. The agency has become an agent of witch-hunt and one that is merely doing the bidding of some powers that be.

“It has not been forgotten how the EFCC under Bawa invaded the residence of Senator Rochas Okorocha, a serving Senator and treated him as a common criminal. Such a manner of invasion is unprecedented in the history of the country.

“Just the other day, the EFCC sneaked into a court and got an interim forfeiture order against Senator Ike Ekweremadu, a man who is already undergoing the most excruciating trying moment.”

“Several residents of the Southern part of the country have also fallen victims of EFCC brutality as homes innocent residents are invaded in the dead time of night, with their windows, burglary and roofs removed, only for the EFCC to apologise later that it acted in error.

“It is our considered view that the country cannot continue in such a crude form of operation. Media trials, illegal invasion and arrests can never be the hallmark of a serious anti-corruption agency. Nigerians have suffered enough unjustified humiliation and this is why we are demanding that it is time for Bawa to go,” the group further stated.

2023: Ohanaeze yet to choose presidential candidate – Officials.

Advertisements

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation, says it has not chosen a preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 general elections.

South-South Zonal Coordinator of Ohanaeze youths, Mr Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, said this in a release which he signed and made available to newsmen in Owerri on Tuesday.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Arthur-Ugwa said that the organisation would make its choice of presidential candidate known in due time if it became necessary.

He advised members of the organisation especially the youth, to desist from politicizing its activities and seeking financial inducement in the organisation’s name.

He further said that the Ohanaeze’s choice of presidential candidate would not be influenced by ethnic and religious sentiments but would be strictly on merit, charisma and capacity of the candidates.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, ably led by our President-General, Prof. George Obiozor, has no preferred presidential candidate yet.

“When it becomes necessary that we choose one and we so do, we’ll make our preferences public.

“We therefore call on members to avoid the temptation to submit to any form of inducement, financial or otherwise in the name of Ohanaeze. This is distasteful as it is unacceptable. As an organisation, our dignity is sacrosanct,” he said.

He noted that prominent Igbo leaders such as the National Women Leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mrs Rita Daniels, had also warned youths not to convert the upcoming general elections into a money-making venture.

According to him, anyone found guilty of collecting money on behalf of Ohanaeze would be properly dealt with in line with laid down procedures.

2023: Ginika Tor again backs Tinubu, says he’s only decentralized candidate.

Advertisements

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Hon. Mrs. Ginika Tor, the Commissioner, Federal Character Commission, FCC, representing Enugu State, has again declared that Ndigbo would gain more from the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu Presidency.

Tor, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, said the party’s flagbearer, Tinubu is the only candidate that has demonstrated to be a true Nigerian.

She spoke to journalists after inaugurating the Enugu State chapter of a Tinubu/Shettima Campaign group.

Tor is the Founder and National Coordinator Omaluegwu Oku Progressive Initiative/Igbo Kwenu for Asiwaju/Shettima.

The Commissioner said the 2023 presidential election would not be decided by emotions and sentiments but based on the antecedents of the various candidates.

According to her, “We are mobilising massively for our presidential candidate and indeed every APC candidate and our assurance to the people is that they will be rewarded after the elections.

“We are going to do our work and our firm belief is that the Igbo people are going to be carried along in the Tinubu government.

“Ndigbo are involved in this movement because they are convinced and believe in the capacity of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu/Shettima. They will definitely take the country to the next level.

“Ndigbo should not take decisions based on sentiment; rather they should support a man who has done it before and that man is Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“He has enough Igbo votes already; people are falling in line; we are convincing them that Tinubu has always carried everyone along.”

She noted that Nigerians should not be deceived by a party that cannot even unite its members.

“Ndigbo trusted the PDP in the past, but we all saw what happened. How did the party reward them for all their support in the past, nothing to show for it.

“This is the time to support a man who is detribalized. Look at Lagos State, we have an Igbo man as a member of the House of Assembly; do we have a Yoruba man in such a position down here in the East? The answer is No. We have someone from Enugu State as the Vice Chairman of Amuwo Odofin, we have Joe Igokwe as an SA, we have another Igbo woman as a Vice Chairman, we have councillors that are of Igbo extraction.

“So, it is about laying a solid foundation. You can see that both in Lagos and Borno State. They both laid solid foundations, unlike those who will hand over to non-performers. This is the time for Ndigbo to make a wise political choice,” Tor advised.

Also speaking, Chief Emmanuel Ogbonna, National Secretary of the group, said the ‘Obidient Movement’ was not a challenge to the Tinubu presidency bid, stressing that “we are ready to push it through; the Igbos are ready to take a political decision that would define their future.”

Others present at the event were Ambassador Ifeyinwa Michael, the Deputy National Coordinator, North, and Hajiwa Amina Idris, National Director welfare.

2023: Peter Obi have former leaders, 18 govs’ backing – Ohanaeze.

Advertisements

About 18 sitting governors are behind the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said.

This was revealed in a statement made available to DAILY POST, Wednesday, by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

He said apart from the unnamed governors, a number of the country’s past leaders were also backing Obi’s candidature.

He disclosed that the governors cut across different political platforms, adding that the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and other political parties, were already afraid of the development.

Ohanaeze, while hailing the courage and the determination of Nigerians who are trooping out in the different parts of the country in support of Peter Obi, urged that the momentum be sustained.

“This is a movement to take back Nigeria from the days of locusts, greedy and selfish politicians.

“It is a movement to rescue the country from adversity, economic slump, ASUU strike, insecurity and corruption.

“Nigerians have demonstrated readiness to take back their country through the ballot box and it behoves on the INEC to make the votes count,” he said.

The Ohanaeze scribe while reviewing the ‘Obidients’ rally held across the country, stated that “the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and others are startled by the soaring popularity of the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, especially after the Obidients’ Independence Day rallies across the country cutting across ethnicity and religious lines. The mammoth crowd took the different cities of the country by storm.

“As we speak, about 18 Governors from the North and the South, cutting across party lines, are behind the scenes putting up structures for Obi to win the 2023 election. In addition, some former Presidents and elder statesmen are in support of Obi’s candidature.

“They are all convinced that Obi has something different from all the other candidates.

“We are glad that for the first time in the recent past, Nigerians are united in the dethronement of misgovernance in Aso Rock. They are determined to make a political change through the ballot box with a third force presidency.

“This is the first time we are seeing such a strong political movement in Nigeria that is not being sponsored by politicians, rather the masses own the project.

“You have seen the mass movement across the country and beyond; you have seen even children, the persons with special needs, the aged, everyone is part of this movement.”

He reiterated his call on the INEC not to truncate the will of the people.

“We are going to hold the commission accountable for their actions. The INEC staff should not scuttle the desire of the people by doing the bidding of money-bag politicians,” he cautioned

Ohanaeze Ndigbo condemns killings in Igbo land

Advertisements

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has condemned in very strong terms the incessant killings going on in Igbo land, describing it as a very strange phenomenon in the Igbo cosmology and culture.

In a statement entitled “Satan on the prowl in Igbo land”, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Chidozie Alex, the apex Igbo socio-cultural body said: “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide condemns the incessant killings in Igbo land. The ongoing gruesome do killings in the South East is a very strange phenomenon in the Igbo cosmology and culture. The Igbo culture strongly abhors killing of mankind, no matter the circumstance. Amongst the Igbo, the killing of a human being is an abomination which attracts heavy sanctions including ostracism for a stipulated number of years. If the ostracized dies before the expiration of the sanction period, the corpse is condemned to an evil forest or will not be accorded a befitting burial.

“The Igbo perspectives on the sanctity of human life is further reinforced by the Christian religious imperative, in the Holy Bible, Exodus 20:13, thus: “Thou Shall not Kill”. It is such that even blasphemy against the tenets of Christianity or the traditional religion cannot provoke an instant extrajudicial killing.

“On the other hand, of all the accusations or allegations against the Igbo culture, killing of fellow human beings could not be contemplated. It is not in the Igbo character. We are at loss over the ugly development in Igbo land.

“The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ambassador Professor George Obiozor, is in grief over the rate at which the South East has degenerated to a killing field. Obiozor recalls with nostalgia that the South East was adjudged the most peaceful before the attack on the Correctional Centre, Owerri, Imo State and the release of 1844 prison inmates by unknown gunmen on April 5, 2021. Since then, the South East has been in a macabre dalliance with siege, atrocities, abominations, arson, all forms of violence and to the worst of the extremes-killing of human beings.

“Sometimes, we begin to wonder whether the local non-state actors have the strategic capacity to overwhelm the well-fortified correctional centres, police stations, etc or the benefits one stands to derive from such savagery.

“While we are still mourning the gruesome murder and the cruel display of the head of a serving member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Okechukwu Okoye, a report was received that some Northerners were killed in some locations in the same Anambra State. As it stands, burning of buildings, police stations, killing of human beings, kidnappings, etc has now become a daily occurrence in Igbo land. This is a very sad development.

‘Ohanaeze Ndigbo faults the remark by the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr Echeng Echeng, to the effect that community leaders are shielding the criminals thereby rendering investigations and arrests very difficult. It is important to inform that in Anambra State, for instance, almost all the communities are hosts to numerous strangers beyond the compass of the community leaders.

“A community such as Nnewi, a commercial nerve centre, is so sophisticated with strangers and economic activities beyond the aerial view of the community leaders. It is as inconceivable to expect the Olu of Ibadan or the Oba of Benin or the Emir of Kano to monitor the crime rate in their highly populated domains. To shield a criminal is to hide a viper snake in the pocket.

“While commending the Anambra State Police Command for their gallantry, commitment and sacrifice, we urge all the community vigilantes, youths, community leaders, traditional rulers and all well-meaning Igbo to rise to the occasion in collaboration with the police to wipe out this ugly trend.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Igbo have an irrepressible wanderlust and as such are inclined to hospitable attributes. Because of our outreach and frontier dispositions, we owe it a duty to be equally kind to strangers and condemn the violence that has been unleashed over our land, especially as it affects our northern brethren.

“Finally, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide extends our deep condolences to the Sarkin Hausawa, Orumba North Council, Alhaji Said Muhammad and other affected Northern communities; and to His Excellency, Professor Chukwuma Soludo and the good people of Anambra State. We urge all and sundry to cooperate with the governor in his relentless effort to overcome the current security challenges in the State.

“Evidently, with the menace of Boko Haram, banditry, unknown gunmen, kidnappings, Fulani herdsmen- farmers’ clashes, Monday sit-at-home, etc, there is no gainsaying that indeed, Satan is on the prowl to cause mayhem in Nigeria.

“It, therefore, requires maturity and restraint amongst the leaders, knowing full well that we shall ultimately overcome”.

David Umahi accuses Ndigbo of delaying negotiation for Kanu’s release.

Advertisements

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has accused the Igbo socio-cultural body, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, of delaying discussions with the Federal Government over Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

The governor made the claim on Friday when he featured on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“We wished that it should be solved and that’s why I went to Mr President. And our leader, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi, has also gone to the President and he agreed for a political solution, but it should be us that should initiate it,” he said on Friday.

“And I am asking Ambassador Obiozor (Ohanaeze President), he is very slow about this because I had gone to the DG DSS. I had gone to the Attorney-General of the Federation and they were ready to receive them to discuss. I had excluded myself so that politics is not by any means adduced to it.”

“So, we should be encouraging the president of Ohanaeze to work with the IPOB leader as Mr President suggested and then let them, you know, bring something before the Federal Government and say, ‘These are what we are bringing on board.’ I think that the President is not averse to that,” the government added.

The governor, who said he foresaw the growing insecurity in the South East, reiterated that that was why his government opposed the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) from the onset.

He, however, said many people misunderstood him and “jumped into and used it for politics”. Umahi lamented that the situation is now “a pain in everybody’s eye” in the region.

Buhari’s ‘Worry’

Umahi’s comment followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the state where the Nigerian leader commissioned several projects.

During the visit, leaders of the South East region pleaded with the Nigerian leader for the release of Kanu who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

But Buhari told the Ebonyi State Stakeholders’ Forum at the Government House in Abakaliki on Friday, that only the court can decide the IPOB leader’s fate.

“I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders, regarding a wide range of options,” he said. “And as I have said previously, this matter remains in the full purview of the court where it will be properly adjudicated.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians for whom life is already tough and will like to just go out and earn a decent and honest living.”

Prof. Obiozor home bombing, “politically arranged” – Uzodimma.

Advertisements

The Imo State Government has condemned the early morning razing of the home of the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof George Obiozor, by those it described as political bandits.

In a statement, Governor Hope Uzodimma regretted that desperate politicians who believe in violence were yet to sheath their swords in spite of repeated appeal to that effect.

Uzodimma described the attack as cowardly and the height of desperation.

He vowed that the government was already working in concert with security agencies to identify and punish the perpetrators.

He bemoaned the incessant resort to violence in settling political differences by some politicians in the state, and warned that the government would no longer condone such banditry.

According to him, “the time of those who unleash this kind of mayhem in the state is over. We shall hunt them down to face the full weight of the law”.

Uzodimma wondered why the bandits should attack the home of a man who is not a politician but a statesman working for the good of the entire Igbo race.

He said it was shameful that both the sponsors and perpetrators of the violence deployed their malicious attack on an innocent man.

While commiserating with Prof Obiozor on the burning of his home, he assured Imo people that the government will continue to do its best to protect lives and property in the state

Attack on Bianca Ojukwu: Ohanaeze Ndigbo gives Obiano ultimatum.

Advertisements

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has reacted angrily to the fracas involving Amb. Bianca Ojukwu, widow of late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and wife of former Anambra Governor, Ebelechukwu Obiano.

Noble Reporters Media had reported that Mrs. Obiano had confronted Ojukwu’s wife at the inauguration of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as Anambra Governor, leading to a physical combat.

Reacting to the incident, Ohanaeze youths in a statement by its President-General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike warned the Obiano family to apologize to the entire Ndigbo without delay.

While describing Mrs. Obiano’s action as a big insult on the entire Igbo race, the OYC said it would not sit and watch anyone denigrate Ojukwu’s family.

He said, “we were shock-stricken to watch the trending video of an unprovoked attack on the wife of Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu by Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano.

“To say the least, this is the height of insult and embarrassment on the entire Igbo race, bearing in mind what the Ojukwu family represents for the entire Igboland.

“Consequently, we are charging the Obiano family to immediately offer an unreserved apology to the Igbo race or face dire consequences. They have an ultimatum to apologize for that barbaric action or have the entire Igbo youths to contend with.

“Having said this, I appeal to the Igbo youths, including Biafra agitators who are so provoked by Mrs. Obiano’s action, to calm down while we wait for the family to do the needful.”

Okwu, however, hailed Mrs. Ojukwu for disciplining Obiano’s wife, stressing that, “we are happy that Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu was able to instill discipline on Mrs. Obiano since she did not get common training from her parents and the husband.”

“As the wife of a warlord, Mrs. Ojukwu couldn’t have done anything less; we are so proud of her and we know that the training she gave to Mrs. Obiano will linger in her memory for several years,” Okwu further stated.

He used the opportunity to congratulate Prof. Soludo on his swearing-in, urging him to set the ball rolling and restore the pride of Anambra State.

“We are so confident that a new Anambra beckons; we are optimistic that the glory days of Anambra State are back,” the youth leader said.

2023: Three S/East Govs will lead large number of defection from PDP – OYC

Advertisements

OYC warned that Igbo politician caught negotiating for Vice President slot will suffer stiff penalties and consequences.

Apex Igbo youth socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, worldwide has claimed that three governors in the South East will lead a mass defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP if the party fails to be open to zoning for the 2023 presidency.

OYC said this in a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, its President-General; Comrade Obinna Achionye Deputy President General and Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, Secretary-General, where it also described the proposed emergence meetings of PDP Board of Trustees, BoT scheduled for November 18 and the party’s National Executive Council meeting coming up on November 19 2020 as the last opportunity for the party to revert back to zoning as enshrined in its constitution.

Advertisements

The OYC said that the party zoning formula favours Southeast for presidency come 2023.

“Failure of PDP BoT and NEC to stand down the NWC’s decision for an unconstitutional “open Contest” and revert back to zoning formula, will inevitably lead to collapse of PDP machinery in Southeast as three igbo Governors will lead igbos into mass defection from PDP to APC. This is the final warning to PDP,” OYC warned.

‘Senate will stands always for National Interest’ – Lawan tells Ohanaeze

Advertisements

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan has given assurance that the Senate will ensure that every part of Nigeria will continue to receive a just and fair deal.

“I want to assure you that the Senate will always stand by National interest,” Lawan told a delegation of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an Igbo social-cultural association from the South East of the country.

“We believe in the unity and the need for every ethnic group, every religious persuasion to have a very fair deal within the country.

Advertisements

“We will work with your representatives from the South East, particularly from Ibo land. We will do everything to support them and they are representing you very well in the Senate,” Lawan said.

The group was led by its Secretary-General, Dim Uche Okwukwu on a courtesy call on the Senate President at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday.

The Senate President said notwithstanding their different political platforms, the national interest has remained their guiding principle in the National Assembly.

Advertisements

The Senate President assured his guests that the Federal lawmakers would always support what would give them the kind of inclusion and sense of belonging in the southeast.

“We can see the commitment of the Federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari in ensuring that every part of Nigeria gets some infrastructure development,” Lawan said.

The Senate President drew the attention of his guests to the progress on the second Niger Bridge and compared it with the unfulfilled promises of the past on the project.

“This administration may not talk too much but it is doing a lot across the country with very little resources. Not like the plentiful resources the previous administration had.

Advertisements

“And of course, you have mentioned the appointments that you have as well and indeed there should be many more. As soon as the opportunities become available for more people of Ndigbo extraction to be appointed, I’m sure the President will do that and the administration will do that.

“It is in the public interest and it is in the interest of the administration and the party because it is when you are fair to people that they can give you support as an administration or vote you in, if you are a political party. And these are things that should be taken as given.

“So we will ensure that you continue to receive justice and fairness even in appointments.

“I believe there is a need for peaceful co-existance in all parts of the country. Where we have misunderstood, the best way to go is to dialogue and find solutions to our disagreement.

Advertisements

“If someone feels he has a just cause or reason to seek redress in court, this is a democracy but the best way to resolve issues often is not going to court especially in a country like ours where we can do better if we dialogue more.

“I don’t know the essence of this court action but what is important is for me to assure you again that the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, will always ensure that you are given and every part of the country is given a sense of belonging.

“What is due to every part of this country should go there and that is why there is representation in the first place.

“If you have any concern, you have your representatives or you can simply write to the National Assembly, the two chambers if you like, to say that these are the issues we feel concerned about and you want the National Assembly to address them or if you feel it is better handled by the Executive side of government, you are free to do so to air your concerns.

Advertisements

“I am sure that this administration under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari will continue to work hard to provide for every part of this country within the limited resources that we have,” Lawan said.

Earlier, Dim Uche Okwukwu who spoke for the delegation said the mission to Abuja was to congratulate Lawan as Senate President on behalf of the Igbo nation.

“Ndigbo are proud of you and the leadership of the National Assembly. We are aware that without your total support for President Muhammadu Buhari, the ongoing infrastructural projects across the length and breadth of Igbo land would be impossible.

“Mr. President, we are not unaware that presently, a misguided person, without the mandate and authority of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo joined some others to sue the government. Therefore, we wholly dissociate Ohanaeze Ndigbo and indeed Ndigbo from that stillbirth suit. It will certainly fail,” Okwukwu said.

Top Story: CAC deregister Ohanaeze Ndigbo

    Advertisements

The Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, has reportedly scrapped the registration earlier granted to a splinter Ohaneze Ndigbo group.

The commission in a statement on social media on Tuesday said that it withdrew the registration of the splinter Ohaneze group which appointed one Basil Onyeachonam as its president general because it has not fulfilled all the requirements for registration.

The statement by the CAC reads: “This is to inform the general public that the certificate of registration No. IT 1444918 issued inadvertently to the Trustees of OHANEZE NDIGBO GENERAL ASSEMBLY has been withdrawn by the Corporate Affairs Commission.

“The Trustees of the Association have been advised to return the said certificate to the commission as same has been cancelled. The conditions for the issuance of the certificate have not been fully fulfilled,” it concluded.

Reacting to the development yesterday, the Deputy Publicly Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mr Chuks Ibegbu said that the main stream Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Chief John Nnia Nwodo was in support of the move by the Corporate Affairs Commission.

He said: “There are due process to register such an organisation and it was not followed. The circumstance that led to the registration should be probed. Something must have gone wrong in CAC. I think that the enemies of Ndigbo are at work.

“These chaps are enemies of Ndigbo and desperadoes. They should be arrested for impersonation.

“Ohanaeze leadership under Nwodo is intact. There is no crack whatsoever. Enemies of Ndigbo are behind this and we shall soon unmask them,” he added.

Before Restructuring, Beyond Biafra – By Ohanaeze Ndigbo

    Advertisements

In the piece, Coronavirus: The Nigerian Dream Cure, I wrote that the COVID-19, which “compelled people to stay within their nations and localities, illuminates the genius of the ageless adage: charity begins at home.” The lessons from the virus also strike a chord with the famous quotation: the “fierce urgency of now”, where Martin Luther King demanded action in the face of a looming catastrophe.

Nowhere are these maxims more expedient than Igboland. Despite the dearth of development in Eastern Nigeria, which has continued to pose existential threats, the Eastern leaders have made no serious attempt to harness current resources for the greater good. Instead, the Igbo politics has been overly consumed with mundane excuses, heightened with utopian ideas that focus solely on the future, most of which are envisaged to satiate the thirsty sentiments of the gullible masses, forgetting that the people must first survive before they can prevail.

An alarming reminder is the deplorable state of healthcare delivery in Igboland. For instance, before the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no hospital with a laboratory capable of testing for such deadly disease in the entire Eastern Nigeria. The plague also exposed the fact that the East, more than any other region, would have been in grave danger, if the COVI9-19 national lock-down had prolonged.

The common excuse for the lack of development in Igboland in the recent times is the structure of the country. Interestingly, the loudest echo chambers for the current campaign from the East are some of the very politicians who held sway during the 16-year rule under the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) but did practically nothing about restructuring. I mean, the very same cabal who are still clad in the same corrupt toga used in colluding with contractors to loot development facilities in the region, especially during the economic boom under Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, “an Igbo adopted son.”

Ironically, some of such looted projects, for example, the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Port Harcourt International Airport, 2nd River Niger Bridge, Zik Mausoleum, and the major Eastern highways and seaports are currently undergoing real work under President Muhammadu Buhari, the perceived grinch. The malfeasance under the PDP becomes more manifest when considered that the East is witnessing measurable infrastructural development under the current regime, despite meagre resources—and, of course, amid Buhari’s misguided vendetta against the region for not voting him.

Highlighting these missed opportunities must not be misconstrued as an opposition to restructuring. Far from that! Nigeria, as currently structured, is a time-bomb. True federalism has the potential to reposition the country and unleash her abundant resources to greatness, but the process to the change must not hinder progress. It is also true that the ageless marginalization of the Igbo by federal authorities combined to stifle development opportunities in the East. But any innocent analysis equally begs the questions:

To what extent can we blame others for the lack of unity of purpose in Igboland? To what extent can we blame others for the failure to articulate game-changing policies to confront the tap root of the problem, by provoking the Igbo people to invest in their native land that is not even up to 30% developed? Worse still, who (or what structure) is to blame for running aground strategic ventures once jointly owned by the Igbo states, for example, the Presidential Hotel Enugu, Nigercem, Golden Guinea Brewery, Premier Brewery, Cooperative Bank, African Continental Bank, Orient Bank, Progressive Bank, and the Daily Star, to name just a few?

The simple answer is that mere change is not a sole panacea to progress. After all, it was not long ago that different groups within Nigeria, including those in Igbo land, were in wild jubilation for being granted their own states or local government areas. Despite the fact that all federal statutory allocations and constituency projects due to the states and local governments, as well as their internally generated revenues, have been under the control of the native politicians themselves, there are no tangible projects to show for the trillions.

Leadership is action, not excuses. The Igbo politicians should, therefore, not wait till after the restructure of Nigeria before embarking on an economic a dry-run in the remote semblance of the preferred structure—at least to stem the existential threat of mass unemployment and the consequential rising tide of crimes in the region. Governors Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo and Sam Onunaka Mbakwe did not hide behind quotidian excuses of the current structure before performing wonders within just 4 years in the Second Republic. Moreover, the Nnewi model has since rubbished the common excuse that the Igbo must have a functional seaport before it can thrive. This goes without saying that many thriving Igbo destinations, for example, Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano do not have seaports.

The apparent leadership problem within Igboland is neither lack of people with original visions nor hard work. In fact, there is an abundance of private sector-driven templates, featuring endearing ideas, the latest being the South East Regional Economic Development Company (SEREDEC), led by Barth Nnaji; and the South East Stabilization Fund, championed by the Ohaneze Ndigbo. Sadly, such visions are always derailed by an insecure Igbo political cabal.

That is where and why the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) made the title of this thesis. For sure, the IPOB deserves profound praise for finally recognizing that the real enemies are within. But the group should equally recognize that the real battle belongs at the polling booths. Therefore, instead of banal threats of election boycotts, which only serve to disfranchise the ordinary people, the IPOB should key into a growing democratic revolution to uproot the status quo across Nigeria—to ensure, at base, that good people are elected to positions of power. These political positions, of course, include the 2023 presidency which, by equitable consensus, is the turn of the South-East zone.

Further, development has never been the sole province of elected officials. Thus, instead of fraternizing with the fanatical property acquisitions outside the Biafra land by the Igbo, paraded under the façade of quasi-republican capitalism, the IPOB might as well capitalize on its overflowing influence to mitigate the suffering of its masses, by leading an investment revolution at home—and NOW.

The gist is woven in an Igbo adage which holds that a child who would grow to greatness typically shows some sense of acumen at an early stage. Therefore, before restructure, and beyond Biafra; even as it is vitally important to admit that the Nigerian leadership crisis is not devoid of ethnic schisms, where each group and generation potently share blame, a paradigm shift in perception and approach has become very imperative. The Igbo must recognize the crying need to persevere and rekindle the competitive spirit, ingenuity, and the mental fortitude needed to unleash immediate investment at home, so that the Igbo masses can even survive before the promised land.

“We are aghast to pass a vote of no confidence to the Presidential Taskforce Committee based on the multi-level discrepancies and complicity in the management of the entire COVID 19 breakout in the past few weeks ever since the first index case of COVID 19 in the month of March till date.”

“We are further disappointed with the growing daily lies camouflaged against the masses, and as well decried the provoking stringent standards process adopted by the Federal Government to determining vulnerable poor Nigerians in the payment of the N5,000.00 (Five Thousand Naira) relief palliative, that they must have less than same N5,000 balance in their bank account, with an average recharging airtime of N100.00 on their phone both to be confirmed by the CBN and NCC.”

“We call for the immediate review and complete overhauling of the Presidential Taskforce Committee to now be efficiently and jointly managed by the President and Vice President; as Chairman and Vice respectively.” the statement read in part.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo mourn Dr. Arthur’s death

Pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Anambra State Government, yesterday expressed shock over the death of Dr. Arthur Agwuncha Nwankwo, founder of Forth Dimension Publishing Company and pro-democracy activist.

In a statement by Deputy National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Mazi Chuks Ibegbu and made available to journalists in Enugu yesterday said the passing on of Nwankwo was “a devastating incident to Ndigbo, Nigeria, Africa and the world.”

The statement also described chieftain of the defunct National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) as “an intellectual giant, writer, activist statesman and political philosopher.

“The likes of Dr. Arthur Nwankwo come to our space rarely. Ohanaeze mourn this intellectual giant thinker and philosopher.”

Also, Anambra State in a statement in Awka yesterday by Commissioner for Information, Mr. C. Don Adinuba, described Nwankwo’s passage as painful and glorious.

It reads: “Painful because Nwankwo was one of the few people in the world who should never die.

“Glorious because he was able to achieve so much for not just his country but also humanity.

“He was a most accomplished publisher, poet, novelist, historian, political scientist, pan Africanist, activist and fighter for justice.

“Worried about the dearth of indigenous publishing firms in Africa in the early 1970s, Dr. Nwankwo, together with Dr. Sam Ifejika, with whom he co-authored a popular book on the Nigerian Civil War in 1969, established a firm named Nwamife Publishers Ltd in Enugu, which published not only books on the war but also works by such scintillating scholars as Professor Ben Nwabueze, Africa’s most influential scholar of constitutional law.

“With Dr. Ifejika’s relocation to Canada, Dr Nwankwo started his own personal firm, Fourth Dimension Publishers, also in Enugu, in the late 1980s.

“Fourth Dimension published almost two thousand highly respected books in various genres, ranging from fiction to literary criticism to history to religion to philosophy to political science to sociology to poetry to physical and biological sciences to autobiography to law and so on.

“It was, indeed, a thing of honour for scholars around Africa to be published by Fourth Dimension. And through Fourth Dimension, many academics attained the professorial rank in the universities.

Nwankwo, pro-democacy activist, and former publisher of Outlook Newspapers Enugu, passed on Saturday afternoon after a brief illness. He was 77.

Nwankwo, who was also the founder of Eastern Mandate Union (EMU), passed on at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, according to sources close to the family.

The pro-democracy activist was among those that fought so hardest return Nigeria to democratic rule after protracted battle that saw the military retreat to the barracks.

In his lifetime, Nwankwo authored many books and mentored several young people that had turned out to be prominent members of the society.
