NRC explains reason for delay on Abuja-Kaduna train lane.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has apologised to passengers for the delay in rendering train services to passengers along the Abuja-Kaduna train route on Monday.

Mr Pascal Nnorli, Manager, Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Monday, said the delay was due to a shortage in the supply of diesel.

“The management of the NRC sincerely apologises to our esteemed customers who may have experienced delay in our Abuja-Kaduna train service on Monday, Jan. 23.

“The delay was caused by the supply of diesel/AGO, which fell short of the specification required to operate our rolling stock, which was out rightly rejected after statutory laboratory test.

“The compulsory laboratory test is carried out on all liquid that is used on the rolling stock, locomotives inclusive to ensure that the right specifications are utilised,’’ Nnorli said.

The manager thanked its passengers for continued patronage and pledged the commitment of the corporation for better services going forward

Human rights lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana on Friday filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop the Nigerian Railway Corporation from resuming train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route until the railway lines are adequately protected from attacks by bandits and terrorists.

Also joined in the suit is another human rights lawyer, Marshal Abubakar.

Both activists filed the suit on Friday ahead of the now-botched planned resumption of train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route on Monday, March 28.

The suit against the NRC, the Minister of Transportation, and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, declared that the Respondents on the matter, are bound to secure the railway lines linking Kaduna State to Abuja (and indeed all other railways lines in Nigeria) against armed attacks by Boko Haram terrorists, kidnappers, and other armed groups before the recommencement of railway transportation services.

The lawsuit relied on Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights Act, Cap A9 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria which guarantee that every person living in Nigeria is entitled to the protection of their fundamental right to life.

In the suit with file number, FHC/ABJ/CS/22, the applicants declared that the brutal killing of unarmed passengers in the Abuja – Kaduna bound train by armed gangs/Boko Haram terrorists on the 28th day of March 2022 is illegal and unconstitutional as it violates the fundamental right of the deceased to life guaranteed by Section 14 (2) (b), 15 (3) (b), 33 and 43 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

They however asked for the relief of the court mandating the Respondents to protect the lives and properties of every passenger plying the Kaduna- Abuja Railway lines(and indeed all other railway lines in Nigeria) by recruiting adequate security personnel and security gadgets to guard and protect every of such passengers utilizing the public railway transportation system in Nigeria.

They also sought an order of the court prohibiting the Corporation and the Federal Ministry of Transportation from recommencing railways services on the Kaduna- Abuja route until adequate security and requisite gadgets are provided to ensure the safety and protection of lives and properties on the route.

Other reliefs sought by the Applicants is for the court to mandate the Respondents officials, whose alleged criminal negligence caused the bomb attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, 2022, should be investigated and prosecuted

NRC suspends train services amid Abuja-Kaduna attack.

The Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC,

has suspended its services due to unforeseen circumstances.

NRC made the announcement in a terse statement on its Twitter page.

This is coming after bandits blew up train rails and attacked the 6pm train heading to Kaduna from Abuja.

Many are feared kidnapped, while others sustained injury during the attack.

The NRC wrote on Tuesday, “Dear passengers, due to unforeseen circumstances, train operations along the Abuja-Kaduna route has been temporarily suspended.

“Further communication would be given in due course.”

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says all train services will continue contrary to its earlier announcement of suspension of services as part of measures to contain spread of COVID-19.

NobleReporters report that the Board and Management of NRC had in a statement by Mr Yakub Mahmood, the NRC Deputy Director Public Relations, on Saturday, said that all train services would be suspended from Monday.

Mahmood had said that the management’s position in a statement entitled: “NRC Stops All Passengers Train Services”, was to curb spread of Coronavirus.

However, in another statement by Mahmood on Saturday evening, the NRC said: “Further to the earlier statement, the board and management have reviewed the situation and decided to provide passengers train services.”

The statement, however, listed the conditions for boarding trains to include that passengers must provide full names, address, date of birth and means of identity.

It urged all passengers to cooperate with any other measures put in place to protect themselves from contracting the pandemic.

COVID-19: NRC stops transportation of people.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced its decision to stop passengers operation from Monday, as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The management of the corporation made this known in a press statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Relations, Yakub Mahmood, on Saturday. It added that further information on the development will be made available in due time.

The statement reads: “the board and management of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) have decided to stop all passengers’ trains operation as from Monday 23rd March,2020. This is in view of the report of the already known coronavirus (Covid 19) outbreak.

“Further information on passengers’ trains services will be made available in due course to our esteemed passengers.”

The federal government on Saturday, announced 10 new cases of Covid-19 in Nigeria.

Treatment
Mr Ehanire said “the three cases in the FCT are being treated at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada while the 7 (seven) new cases in Lagos are being treated at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), Yaba”.

He said all 10 new cases have mild to moderate symptoms and are currently receiving treatment.

Mr Ehanire said the federal government remains committed to working with states to provide optimal care for all confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country.

As of March 21, 22 cases have been confirmed, with two of the cases discharged. There has been no death from COVID-19 in Nigeria.

So far, 19 cases were imported while three are contacts of people who came into the country. Nigeria is yet to report any local transmission.

Nigeria, as of Friday had restricted travel from 15 countries with high coronavirus cases.

The affected countries are; China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, United States of America, Norway, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden.

The travel restriction commenced on March 21.

The travel restrictions are expected to limit the number of imported cases into the country.
