The Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted to the recent violent attacks on his supporters by suspected thugs in Lagos State.
Obi condemned every form of violence and political thuggery and the incessant attacks on his ‘Obedient’ supporters.
Obi called on the security forces nationwide to protect those exercising their fundamental rights of free speech and assembly.
He said, “As we go into the final stretch for the 2023 elections, I call on all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation or tendency, to eschew violence. I condemn any form of violence and political thuggery; and especially the incessant attacks on my Obedient supporters.
“I call on the security forces nationwide to protect those exercising their fundamental rights of free speech and assembly. Our civic space must not shrink further.”
This was disclosed in a statement signed on Friday by CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Mr Osita Nwanisobi.
CBN said NSPM is not experiencing insufficient printing materials, as alleged by a report making the rounds in the media.
It clarified that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, told the National Council of State in a meeting in the presidential villa on Friday that NSPM was working assiduously on printing all denominations of the banknotes to ease the sufferings of Nigerians.
Also, the apex bank frowns at vested interests attempting to pitch the public against the Bank.
It assured the public that the Bank would continue to execute its constitutional mandate by ensuring the smooth nationwide circulation of the currency.

“For the records, what Mr Emefiele told the meeting was that the NSPMC was working on printing all denominations of the Naira to meet the transaction needs of Nigerians.
“While the CBN appreciates the concerns shown by all stakeholders about the distribution of the Naira, we are alarmed at the extent to which vested interests are attempting to manipulate facts and pitch the public against the Bank”.
“We wish to state unequivocally that there is no such plan and that the claims are illogical and do not comply with the workings of the Nigerian banking system. The public is therefore advised to ignore such recordings as they do not represent the policy thrust of the CBN and are only the desperate attempts of persons bent on inciting the public against the bank”.
A rebuttal Saturday evening by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director Defence Information, denied the military was involved in a plan to disrupt the general polls.
The spokesperson said the “wicked and very malicious propaganda indicated that a so-called Thursday meeting plotted a Coup d’etat to establish unconstitutional order”.
The Armed Forces expressed dismantled that “politically exposed persons can denigrate themselves into joining agents of destabilisation and violence in making false claims just to heighten tension in the polity”.
The director stated that the military is loyal to the constitution of the Federal Republic and will never be part of any evil plot against democracy.

The Defence Headquarters maintains it remains apolitical and neutral in the current political process and will not engage in shenanigans.

The Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has disclosed that over 1.16 million tertiary institutions admission seekers have so far registered for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Professor Oloyede stated this on Saturday while monitoring some CBT centres in Abuja.
He said the Board would not extend deadline for the 2023 Unified UTME registration, while warning centers against extortion of candidates.
The sale of 2023 UTME commenced on Saturday,14th January, 2023, and close on Tuesday, 14th February, 2023
The JAMB Registrar said, “Registration is going on well except some of these schools. UTME is not a school based examination, it’s individual candidates and you can see what that school, Stella Maris is doing, collecting N30,000 from candidates in the name of JAMB and then end up missing up the telephone number of the candidates.”
He said once they keep the telephone number of candidates, “it is unlikely that the candidates when we are contacting them if we want to make a change in their timetable, you send text to them and it will not get to them after they have graduated from the school and want to do change of course they don’t have access to it.
“That is a way of extorting the parents and we will take adequate steps to make sure that we stop that. One of the reasons is that we will tell every CBT center to stop doing bulk purchase of pin and bulk registration so if a center sales more than one pin to a source or collect money for more than one pin from a source then we will sanction such center.”
He urged candidates to report cases of extortion, saying that there is a code for candidates to reach the board when they come across any case of extortion, while promising there will be a reward for such act
The former Enugu State governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, on Friday dismissed his expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a joke.
The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had earlier on Friday approved the expulsion of the senator representing Enugu West and five other members for alleged anti-party activities.
The other affected members are John Fayose, son of former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, Ajijola Oladimeji (Ekiti Central), Olayinka Olalere (Ekiti Central II), Akerele Oluyinka (Ekiti North I), and Emiola Jennifer (Ekiti South II).
Nnamani, who reacted to his expulsion in a letter addressed to the PDP NWC through his lawyer, Olusegun O. Jolaawo (SAN), insisted that the party leadership lacks the power to suspend or expel him from the party.
He said the NWC failed to follow due process before suspending him, adding that the expulsion does not hold water.
The decision, according to him, violated the PDP constitution which clearly stated that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) has the power to suspend or expel a member of the National Assembly.
The ex-governor noted that based on article 57(7) of the PDP constitution, the NWC lacks the powers to contemplate any disciplinary measure against him in the first place.
He described the NWC meeting held on January 20 as illegal and urged the party to reconsider the action.
The letter read: “It is evident on the basis of Articles 57(7) and 59(3) of the Constitution of your party excerpted above, that no organ of the party, including the National Working Committee, has the competence to entertain any question of discipline against our client, except the National Executive Committee of the party.
“It, therefore, gives us great concern, that your proposed disciplinary hearing of 8 February, 2023 as stated in your letter of 1st February, 2023, is built and erected on the illegal and invalid meeting and decision taken by the National Working Committee of your Party at its meeting of January 20, 2023, suspending our client from the Party.
“Your letter to our client dated 1st February, 2023 made it abundantly clear that the complaint against our client was made to your committee by the National Working Committee.

“However, by virtue of the provision to Article 57(7) of the Constitution of your Party, the National Working Committee is required to make complaint on any disciplinary matter against a member of the National Assembly, only to the National Executive Committee of the Party. Your committee has not claimed to be the National Executive Committee of the PDP and in fact, is not.
“Your committee, therefore, has no powers under the Constitution of the Party (under which you claim to be proceeding against our client) to entertain or hear any question of discipline against our client as he is a member of the National Assembly. Only a properly constituted National Executive Committee of the party can entertain such question of discipline against him.
“The proceeding and decision reached at the meeting of the National Working Committee of your Party which was held on January 20, 2023, is therefore, both illegal and a nullity.”
Popular South African rapper, AKA, has been killed in a drive-by shooting outside a restaurant in Durban on Friday night.
The entertainer whose real name was Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, was reportedly gunned down alongside a friend while one of his bodyguards was also injured in the shooting.
Durban Police spokesman, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, who confirmed the incident, said police were investigating two murder cases but were yet to establish the motives for the murders.
According to Netshiunda, the 35-year-old AKA was standing outside a popular restaurant in the city with a friend at about 10pm when two cars drove past with passengers opening fire on them, killing both instantly.
A social media post by a close associate stated that AKA had been due to perform at a nightclub called YUGO but the event was subsequently cancelled with a notice saying the gig was being abandoned “due to unforeseen circumstances”.
A paramedic, Garrith Jamieson, who spoke to reporters after affirming the death of the entertainer and his friend, said they died instantly as a result of the gun shots.
“On arrival, paramedics met total chaos and a scene where two men, believed to be in their late 30s, sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
“Paramedics assisted the men and unfortunately the first male had sustained multiple gun shot wounds and showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene.”

The Turkish government on Friday solicited humanitarian assistance from its Nigerian counterpart for victims of the recent devastating earthquake in the country.

The Embassy urged other public-spirited individuals in Nigeria to send the items to the victims of the earthquake via Turkish airlines and indicate the addresses in Abuja and Lagos where the items would be dropped.
The statement read: “To the kind attention of volunteers who wish to make in-kind donations to those affected by the powerful earthquakes in Turkiye.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on Friday called for the withdrawal of the time limit on the use of the old Naira notes.
Lawan, who addressed State House correspondents at the end of the Council of State meeting in Abuja, urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow the old Naira notes to coexist with the new ones for the mean time.
He decried the suffering the redesign of naira notes has caused Nigerians.
The Council of State had during the meeting urged the CBN to make the new naira notes available alongside the old notes in order to address the tension created by scarcity of the banknotes in the country.
Lawan said: “For us in the Senate, initially we felt that this policy in the first place is not a bad one. But we also feel there is no need for time limit.

“Allow the old and the new to co-exist until the old is phase out. So, what is wrong in that? This is not going to be the first country to deploy it that way.
“Other countries have been doing the same thing. And to say that in three months it will be okay? It is not okay, especially in a country like ours where maybe 80, 85, 90 percent of the population lack access to banks.
“When Britain changed their currency, it took them over a year to change and the validity of the old remains and remains a legal tender. So, why ours? We are not cashless yet and that society is cashless already and they needed even more time.”
The debilitating effects of the Naira swap policy enacted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has elicited a scathing critique from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, in a statement issued on Friday, slammed the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for ambushing Nigerians with the policy.
“Nigerians are gasping for breath under the suffocating atmosphere created by the ruling class is to state the obvious,” he stated.
The ASUU president added that in order to adequately assess the extent of the harm caused by the crisis brought on by the country’s currency redesign, developmental economists would need to make extremely serious efforts.
“The ambush tactic of Godwin Emefiele to ‘eliminate cash’ was applied in India in 2016 with unsalutary consequences. So, ASUU commends the Supreme Court for siding with the suffering Nigerians, whose miserable lives would have been compounded by Emefiele’s policy if they are not sent to their early graves by it.
“In the same way government’s explanation on non-circulation of the redesigned currency is meaningless, no attempt to rationalise non-accessibility of petroleum products is tenable. This outgoing government raised Nigerians’ hope of fixing the country’s refineries when it was coming to power in 2015.
“Eight years down the line, it has been giving one excuse after another; allowing a free rein to the oil subsidy scammers! Nigerians know the truth; they know the local refineries can work if the core leadership of the ruling class is willing to commit class suicide. But it’s a poisonous tablet none is willing to swallow.”

Meanwhile, the National Council of States declared its support for the naira redesign policy.
Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s attorney-general, said this while addressing journalists at the end of the council’s meeting at the State House, Abuja, on Friday.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said on Friday the Federal Government has concluded plans to establish a tourism academy in the country.
Mohammed, who disclosed this at the graduation ceremony of Terra Academy For The Arts (TAFTA) in Lagos, said the academy would help to grow Nigeria’s creative industry and create opportunities for youths.
He added that Nigeria was picked as one of the two countries in Africa to host the academy because of its remarkable achievements in the creative industry.
Mohammed said: ”I am, therefore, happy to announce that we are currently working with the UNWTO and some other private sector players to establish a tourism academy in Nigeria.
“This academy will be located in Lagos and would provide accessible vocational and managerial transformative training for the tourism and hospitality sector.
”The UNWTO has also announced plans to work with Nollywood to positively project the image of Africa.
NUC Deputy executive secretary (administration), Chris Maiyaki, said the directive takes effect from Wednesday, February 22, 2023.
Maiyaki noted that the directive was based on a directive from Nigeria’s education minister Adamu Adamu.
“As Vice-Chancellors of all Universities and Director/Chief Executive of Inter-University Centres are quite aware the 2023 General Elections have been scheduled to hold on Saturday February 25, 2023, for the Presidential and National Assembly, and Saturday March 11, 2023 for Gubernatorial and State Assembly, respectively.
“In view of the foregoing and concerns expressed on the security of staff, students and properties of the our respective institutions, the Honourable Minister of Education, Mal. Adama Adamu has following extensive consultations with the relevant security agencies, directed that all Universities and Inter-University Centres be shut down and academic activities be suspended between 22 February and 14th March, 2023.”

The suspension of academic activities comes days after the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) asked President Muhammadu Buhari to shut down all tertiary institutions until after the February 25 and March 11 elections.
NANS vice-president Akinteye Babatunde stressed that the shutdown would allow students to obtain their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs).
“The office of the NANS vice president (external affairs) calls on the federal government of Nigeria to immediately close all tertiary institutions temporarily to afford students the opportunity to collect their PVCs from their local government Areas and vote in the forthcoming elections,” Babatunde said.
