IPOB issues of ‘eye for eye’ threat if anything happens to Kanu.

Outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has once again, warned the Nigerian government over the health condition of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu who is being detained in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).

The group was reacting to a statement credited to the DSS last week that the service was taking very good care of Kanu.

A statement made available to Ripples Nigeria on Sunday by IPOB‘s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said its leader was seriously ill and needed urgent medical attention outside the country as his medical needs can’t be met in the DSS custody.

The Biafra agitators also vowed that if anything happens to Kanu, there would be a “tit for tat towards anybody behind the kidnap and extraordinary rendition of its leader from Kenya to Nigeria.”

“The attention of the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, under the able leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been drawn to the insulting and provoking statement credited to the infamous DSS agents that Kanu is being properly taken care of inside their dungeon by the lawless DSS criminal agency,” IPOB said.

“Again, we want Biafrans, Nigerians, and the International Community to know that the Nigerian Department of State Services (DSS) has continued to deny Kanu access to his doctor as ordered by the court, and has not provided him with his medical records either.

“He is not being provided with his prescription medication regularly. Kanu is still being starved because his feeding has also not improved.

“Our leader’s health is deteriorating daily inside DSS solitary confinement, while DSS continues to defy the judgment and legitimate orders of courts of competent jurisdiction.

“The spurious claim therefore by the lawless DSS that Mazi Nnamdi KANU is properly being taken care of medically is not just an insult to the sensibilities of Biafrans, but very provocative as well.

“IPOB has maintained a peaceful and nonviolent stance in our movement and struggles to restore Biafra, and we intend to continue the peaceful agitation for a Biafra Independence referendum.

“But this peaceful struggle will not be guaranteed if anything happens to Kanu in the DSS dungeon. If anything untoward happens to our leader in the hands of the Nigeria government and DSS, it will be a tit-for-tat towards any individual, group, and institution that is involved in the kidnap and extraordinary rendition of our leader from Kenya to Nigeria and much more,” the group said.

Ask Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu – Lawyer, Ejimakor tells Nigerians.

Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has reacted to those asking the Federal Government to obey the Supreme Court judgment on the deadline extension of the old naira notes.

“We have maintained that we don’t have any interest in the Nigeria shambolic political selection process called Nigeria elections scheduled for February 2023. Our interest and focus is the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the date for Biafra referendum for Biafrans to determine their political future in or outside Nigeria.

Speaking with 𝕹𝖔𝖇𝖑𝖊 𝕽𝖊𝖕𝖔𝖗𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖘’ known Media on the activities of gunmen linked to Ekpa, Isiguzoro reiterated his stance on a plot to destabilise the 2023 elections in the Southeast using Ekpa.

According to Isiguzoro: “This madness of sit-at-home and incessant killings and insecurity we are witnessing in the Southeast can be traced to the continuous incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, which Simon Ekpa is taking undue advantage of.

“Ekpa is an opportunist, a fame and fortune seeker who saw the window and lapses of Kanu’s detention as an opportunity for him to venture into his journey of amassing wealth from politicians and destroying the people of the Southeast.

“The only cure to this madness of Simon Ekpa is a passionate appeal to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow the leader of IPOB to address Ndigbo possibly this February before the elections, because there is a grand conspiracy by some external enemies of Ndigbo, and they are using Ekpa to shortchange and ensure that there is an election boycott in the Southeast.

“The only cure to this Ekpa’s madness is for Buhari to allow Kanu, even if it’s a five-minute broadcast, because Kanu has continued to say through his lawyers that these killings and insecurity in the Southeast should end. The activities of unknown gunmen instigated by Ekpa should end, and why there has been no effect on those messages is that the people doubt if those messages are from Nnamdi Kanu.

“So, in order to have a peaceful election, the Federal Government should give Nnamdi Kanu a five-minute broadcast to talk to the people of the Southeast; this would end Ekpa and his madness.”

Sit-at-home: Allow Nnamdi Kanu address media – HURIWA to Buhari

Advertisements

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to allow the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, to address the media to put an end to the confusion surrounding the sit-at-home order in the South East.

This is following a series of skirmishes and targeted violence and attacks masterminded by some armed supporters of the Finland-based Simon Ekpa.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

People living and doing business in the South East have been under siege in recent months as they cannot go about their legitimate businesses.

The IPOB’s leadership has, on many occasions, distanced itself from any sit-at-home, urging Nigerians living in the zone to go about their legitimate business but that has not stopped the killing of people in the South East in the name of sit-at-home.

There have been stories of killings and maiming of innocent Nigerians who alter the sit-at-home order for one reason or the other, as the South East is shut down every Monday and on other occasions.

And now HURIWA, through a statement signed by its national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, is calling on Buhari to let Kanu personally address the media affirming and categorically confirming the suspension of the sit-at-home order.

HURIWA has also criticized the law enforcement agents and the Department of State Services for the failure of intelligence to nip in the bud the dozens of bloody attacks effectively.

HURIWA accused the Police and the other security agencies in the South East of being happy watching the commoners being decimated, degraded and almost on the verge of being wiped off the earth.

“The President should let Mazi Nnamdi Kanu speak to Igbo people to affirm or deny the report by his lawyers that he had ordered an end to the Sit-at-home order which one Mr. Simon Ekpa an alleged follower of the detained leader disputed and ordered for forceful implementation of the so called Sit-at-home order,” HURIWA pleaded.

The group further pointed out that a live television broadcast by Kanu on the confusion surrounding the sit-at-home order would assuage the suspended animation and suspicions “by some persons loyal to Simon Ekpa that Nnamdi Kanu did not order an end to the economically stagnating sit-at-home order in the South East of Nigeria.

“Secondly, just as was done in Ukraine, President Muhammadu Buhari should democratise arms licences so sane adult Nigerians can bear AK-47 and AK-49.

“If President Muhammadu Buhari is not the sponsor of the chaos in the South-East then let his government adopt a pragmatic approach such as permitting that Kanu addresses the media as a matter of extreme urgency to put an end to these killings,” it said.

2023: Nnamdi Kanu’s release will boost APC chances in Southeast – Deji Adeyanju.

Advertisements

An Abuja-based activist, Deji Adeyanju has said the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, would boost the All Progressives Congress, APC, chances in the 2023 presidential elections.

Former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu is the APC presidential candidate.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Noble Reporters Media learnt that there have been clamours for the Federal Government to release Kanu following a judgement of the Court of Appeal. However, the court later granted a stay of the order.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had declared as illegal and unlawful the abduction of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria and quashed the entire terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

It ruled that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in Kanu’s extraordinary rendition to Nigeria.

But the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami, had vowed that Kanu would not be released, stressing that the Federal Government would pursue other charges against Kanu.

Prior to his arrest, the IPOB leader had vowed to ensure no election was held in the Southeast until the government approved a referendum that would lead to the creation of Biafra.

With his arrest in June 2021 and continued incarceration, some Nigerians believe that releasing Kanu would jeopardise the successful conduct of the 2023 elections in the Southeast.

Amid the clamour for Kanu’s release, some people are of the opinion that APC would get a few votes in the Southeast.

These claims are anchored on the agitations that the Southeast should be allowed to produce Nigeria’s president in 2023.

Of all the top political parties, only the Labour Party, LP, stands a better chance of getting more votes in the Southeast because its presidential candidate, Peter Obi is from the region.

However, Adeyanju said releasing Kanu would boost APC’s chances of getting votes in the Southeast.

Adeyanju noted that politicians can use Kanu’s release as a political strategy in the Southeast.

Speaking with DAILY POST, he said: “It will boost APC’s chances, it will boost the morale of their supporters and that would be to the advantage of the ruling party and the PDP. The only party it will affect is the labour Party who are expecting to get some significant votes from the Southeast.

“If the Federal Government decides to release Nnamdi Kanu, it will increase the ruling party’s chances of getting a favourable outcome in the election.

“It can be used by politicians as a campaign strategy in the Southeast, so they can have something to go home and campaign with.

“Like I have said, keeping Kanu does not add any value to the Federal Government; what value are they going to derive from keeping a man that the court has granted bail and said even his arrest is unconstitutional?

“You can’t build something on nothing in law, and you can’t give what you don’t have. The government can’t in any way prove the guilt of Kanu because they first have to return him back to where he was taken in Kenya. That is a small thing for any court to rule, because it’s extraordinary rendition, which is state capture and abduction of citizens – this is prohibited under international law, and there is no easy way out for the government.

“It will just be right for the government to release him because the next government may most likely release him.”

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has, through his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, filed a suit at the Abia State High Court, Umuahia, against the Director General (DG) of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Abubakar.

Confirming the suit, Ejimakor told The Guardian, yesterday, that the suit, HU/293/2022, which he filed on November 23, 2022, was “prompted by newly discovered evidence, which implicated the NIA DG beyond the infamous extraordinary rendition, and for his tortious role in the eight days ‘false imprisonment’ of Kanu in Kenya.”

He noted that of all suits, which have emanated from the rendition of Kanu, this is the first against Abubakar, either in his personal or official capacity.

According to Ejimakor, the suit seeks declarations and orders of the state High Court that Kanu’s arrest and imprisonment in Kenya in 2021 is a false arrest and imprisonment, and that the defendant acted in bad faith, and/or abused his public office.

The orders are that the defendant should pay the claimant (Kanu) N20 billion as general and exemplary damages, write and deliver to him a letter of apology, as well as publish same in two national newspapers, specifically The Guardian and The Sun.

Kanu demands N20bn compensation, apologies from Malami.

Advertisements

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has demanded N20 billion as compensation from the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Kanu demanded compensation following alleged defamatory and libellous claims against him.

Speaking through his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, the IPOB leader, said Malami’s claim that he jumped bail despite a court order clearing him was libellous.

Recall with Noble Reporters Media that the military had invaded Kanu’s premises at Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku, Abia State on 10th September, 2017, and this led to him fleeing the country.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

The alleged invasion was contested and tagged a violation of Kanu’s fundamental human right.

But, the courts ruled that the invasion was unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional.

Speaking on the issue, Malami was quoted as saying: “To release or not to release Nnamdi Kanu is a function of law and the rule of law for that matter. In arriving at a decision on whether to release or not release, is one; you look at the rule of law, two; you look at the public and the national interest, three; you look at the security situation, four; you look at the international diplomacy.

“Let me talk first of the rule of law. This is someone that has been granted bail on account of charges that have been preferred against him at the court. Someone jumping bail to the international community, a case of a fugitive is established against the background of jumping the bail.

“Two, arising from the national security, this is someone that is charged with treason, incitement and destruction of civil authority, murder and assassination of others on account of his incitement, that boils down to issues of national security and criminality.

“Three, on account of international diplomacy, this is someone that has against his person, used the international community or a foreign country to launch an attack against a nation, against his nation for that matter.

“So all these naturally come into play to determine what to do. So if you have, through judicial processes, established multiple cases of treason, homicide, and bail-jumping, among others, the fact that you have indeed succeeded in one case as against multiple others that are pending, goes to establish the fact that that case cannot be the only basis and criterion for determining whether you are entitled to be released or not.”

Condemning Malami’s remark, Ejimakor said: “Despite the clear exoneration from jumping bail contained in the Judgment exhibited and quoted above, you have, after 19th January 2022 when this judgment was rendered, defamed and libelled our Client by your several utterances and publications (in national dailies) where you falsely stated that our Client jumped bail.

“In view of the said judgment of the Abia State High Court, your above utterances were false, malicious and reckless and they were read and heard worldwide and portrayed our Client in light.

The letter reads partly: “The sum of N20,000,000,000.00 (Twenty Billion Naira only) being general and exemplary damages.

“An unreserved personal letter of apology, to be prominently and boldly published full-page in two Nigerian Newspapers of national circulation, namely: Guardian Newspaper and Sun Newspaper.

“You shall write and deliver to your superior officer(s) and/or your employer(s) a Legal Opinion to the effect that our Client did not jump bail in view of the 19th January 2022 Judgment of the High Court of Abia State.

“The foregoing demands are without prejudice to other options or terms for settlement that you may counter-propose in response to this Letter. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Saturday, stated that the legal team of its embattled leader, Nnamdi Kanu will defeat the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami in any law court.

IPOB said this while reacting to the Federal High Court in Abuja’s ruling that adjourned Kanu’s trial indefinitely.

Justice Binta Nyako adjourned the trial indefinitely, pending the resolution of the Federal Government’s appeal against the October 13 judgment of the Court of Appeal that discharged Kanu of the terrorism charges.

The Federal Government’s appeal seeking reversal of the Court of Appeal judgment is pending before the Supreme Court.

Reacting, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, commended Kanu’s counsels, Ifeanyi Ejiofor and Mike Ozekhome, for their efforts.

A statement by Powerful reads: “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably lead by the Prophet, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu KANU wish to recognize the high level of preparedness demonstrated by our legal team in answering the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami wherever he calls Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB in the Nigeria court system.

“Both the Lead Counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome and Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s most trusted, reported that the judge told Malami and his goons that both the first case and the second undocumented case are adjourned to await the hearing and final determination of the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court during their last appearance at Hon. Justice Binta Nyako’s High Court, Abuja on Monday, November 14, 2022.

“We also recognize that these two leaders work with a whole host of brilliant lawyers who work tirelessly behind the scenes and upfront in the courts to defend our leader and our movement.

“Malami was further admonished by the court that the former case and even the new one have both been prohibited from being heard for the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in any court.

“So, we the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) recognize these successes and winnings and want to congratulate our legal team for their act of bravery in the face of Nigeria government’s intimidation and threats. We recognize the legal team for their continued doggedness in their fight with the monster called Nigeria.”

“A declaration of this honourable court that the defendants acted in bad faith and/or abused their public offices in falsely arresting and falsely imprisoning the plaintiff at the said location in Kenya and said aircraft.

“An order of this honourable court directing the defendants to, jointly and severally, pay to the plaintiff the sum of N20,000,000,000.00 (Twenty Billion Naira only) being general and exemplary damages.

Kanu: IPOB calls out Malami for trying to destroy criminal justice system.

Advertisements

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Sunday, accused the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami of trying to destroy the criminal justice system and judiciary in Nigeria.

IPOB made the remark while stressing that “filing dead charges” against Kanu was an affront against the court judgment ordering Kanu’s release.
Recall that the Federal Government had filed an amended seven-count charge against Kanu.

Condemning the move, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, accused Malami of making a mockery of the judicial system.

Powerful said filing amended charges after the judgment of an Appeal Court was an affront of the ruling of the court.

A statement by Powerful reads partly:” We the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by Nnamdi Okwuchukwu KANU, condemn the rumored new amended charge filed by Malami and his cohorts against our indefatigable Kanu, even after the Court of Appeal has discharged and acquitted him of all criminal allegations.

“This is a clear indication that Malami is really a quota system SAN who have no business or knowledge near the legal profession.

“Our Simple understanding and knowledge is that the judgement of the court is a problem to Malami and APC Government, no wonder, under Malami reign as the Chief law officer of the Federation, he has been rated among the most corrupt legal officer and his Ministry is presently entangled in plethora of corruption allegations that bothers on embezzlement of public fund.

“If Malami the Attorney General likes let him go to his native Kebbi state and file fresh charges in a sharia court against our indefatigable leader KANU, he is not only wasting his time, he is making a mockery of purported legal training and the Judiciary of Nigeria.

2023: Controversies over continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu.

Advertisements

President Muhammadu Buhari has been slammed over the issues surrounding the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his continued detention by the Federal Government.

Despite the ruling by the Court Appeal for the IPOB leader to be released, the Buhari administration stood its ground. It later approached the same court and got a stay of execution.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had held that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in the forceful rendition of Kanu to Nigeria, thereby making the terrorism charges against him incompetent and unlawful.

But the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami had vowed that Kanu would not be released despite the court ruling, insisting that the Federal Government would pursue other charges against Kanu.

This is despite the likes of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, elder statesmen such as former Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the late Mbazuruike Amaechi, Chief Edwin Clark among other prominent groups and individuals calling for adherent to the court ruling.

Also some rights groups such as the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law (Intersociety) had knocked the Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, over the development.

The group said Malami’s activities were gravely pushing Nigeria into a regional and international abyss of mockery, which it said has far-reaching consequences on the country’s socio-economic development, regional and international human rights, rule of law and democracy ratings.

Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, told Buhari that the continued detention of Kanu, would be viewed as kidnapping and would spike other forms of violence in the South East.

Advertisements

HURIWA further accused Malami of acting the script of Miyetti Allah Cattle sellers, insisting that Buhari must stop playing what it described as the toxic Northern ethnic card and obey the court verdict that discharged the IPOB leader.

“Any further detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would amount to active hostage taking and an outright criminal case of kidnapping which is actionable. We wonder why a lawyer of Malami’s illustrious status adorning the title of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria is now speaking like a one hundred-level law student of one road-side law faculty in a corner of Nigeria,” Onwubiko said.

He added that, “The Federal Government had rushed to the Appeal Court after the Federal Attorney General and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami had used media platforms to impugn and discredit the panellists who freed Kanu.”

Many other people still believe that Kanu’s release would restore peace in the South-East.

“In other democracies, when a court gives its ruling, the government or whoever it affects follows it up immediately. But that’s not the case in Nigeria. One thing the Buhari government is known for is its total disobedience to the rule of law. A court gave an order but instead of obeying the court ruling, they’re busy transferring the judges that gave the ruling and installed those that will do their bidding,” a security expert and senior lecturer in one of the Federal Universities told DAILY POST

“People living and doing businesses in the South East are forced to sit at home every Monday and I don’t how this is helping Malami and the Buhari government.

“But just as it has been said, it appears this government does not want peace in the South East. It’s looking like they want the region to be destroyed. If that’s not the case, tell me why Nnamdi Kanu has been detained despite the court order.

“I know the APC and some people in the Buhari government want to use the situation to their own advantage. The plan is to keep the South East in crisis with the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu so that the people would be scared to come out to cast their votes or participate fuller in the election activities. They know that the South East is the stronghold of the Labour Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi,” he added.

Kanu: How Mbazulike Amaechi died in pain, unfulfilled dream

Advertisements

Nigerians, Tuesday morning, received with shock news of the sudden demise of First Republic Minister, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi.

For the people of the South-East region, it is one death too many.

DAILY POST reports that the 93-year-old former parliamentarian died as one of the surviving respected Igbo leaders.

Residents say his death is even more painful considering that he died without achieving his last major wish.

It could be recalled that in November 2021 the nonagenarian had led other eminent Igbo leaders to President Muhammadu Buhari, during which he requested for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

He had begged Buhari to release Kanu to him as a way of political solution to the disquiet in the South-East zone.

Other members of the delegation were former Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, former President of Igbo socio-cultural group, Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike and Tagbo Amaechi.

Amaechi told Buhari that the situation in the South-East was “painful and pathetic,” as businesses had collapsed, while education was crumbling amid fears.

He promised that if Kanu was released to him as the only First Republic minister still alive, “he (Kanu) would no longer say the things he had been saying.”

Advertisements

Responding, Buhari had told his visitors that the request was a tough one.

He, however, said owing to the age of the leader of the delegation, Amaechi, he would consider it.

The President had said, “You’ve made an extremely difficult demand on me as the leader of this country. The implication of your request is very serious. In the last six years, since I became President, nobody would say I have confronted or interfered in the work of the judiciary.

“God has spared you (referring to the ex-minister), and given you a clear head at this age, with a very sharp memory. A lot of people half your age are confused already. But the demand you made is heavy. I will consider it.”

DAILY POST, however, reports that six months after, Buhari made a U-turn, declaring that the law would run its course of Kanu’s trial.

The event was in Ebonyi during his two-day visit to the State. He met with Igbo leaders as part of the visit.

And addressing them, Buhari, who had earlier promised to look into the request made by the elder statesman, said the court would determine the fate of Nnamdi Kanu.

The President told his audience made up mostly of South-East Traditional Rulers’ Council that, “I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders regarding a wide range of options, and as I have said previously, this matter remains in the full purview of the courts where it will be properly adjudicated.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians, for whom life is already tough and would like to earn a decent and honest living.

‘‘There are many that fit this profile and the government owes them that obligation to protect lives and property.”

This statement from the President dashed the hopes of Amaechi and indeed the entire people of the South-East zone.

Though the now late Amaechi later repeatedly pleaded that his wish be granted by the Buhari government, it never came to be until he transited early this morning, Tuesday.

He had looked up to a peaceful South-East and end of the worrisome Monday sit-at-home, which would be made possible by Nnamdi Kanu’s release but that desire never came to fruition.

The Appeal Court had acquitted and discharged Kanu but the Federal Government returned to the same Court with a stay of execution application, which was granted.

Igbo congress to Malami: “Kanu deserves justice.”

Advertisements

The World Igbo Congress, WIC, has called on the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, gets justice.

The body was reacting to the Appeal Court in Abuja judgment that ordered the release of Kanu and Justice Evelyn Anyadike’s Federal High Court judgment against the extraordinary rendition of Kanu on October 26, 2022, in Umuahia.

Among other things, Justice Anyadike had ruled that Kanu should be returned to Kenya prior to his arrest in June 2021.

Despite the court’s ruling, Kanu is still locked up by the Department of State Services, DSS.

Advertisements

Reacting to the judgment, the Igbo congress urged Malami to sanction Kanu’s release.

The call was made in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Chris Ogara; Basil Onwukwe, PRO; and Anthony Ejiofor, Chairman.

The statement forwarded to Noble Reporters’ known Media by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor reads: “World Igbo Congress, on behalf of all Igbo in the Diaspora, extols the judgment delivered on Thursday, October 26, 2022, by the Federal High Court in Umuahia (presided over by Justice Evelyn Anyadike) against the extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu on October 26 2022.

“World Igbo Congress sees this monumental judgment as the zenith of “judicial courage” even as the judicial somersault by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in appealing the freedom already granted to Nnamdi Kanu by the three-man panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja led by Justice Hanatu Sankeyas persists.

“By this judgment in the Federal Court Umuahia, we see that there is yet hope in the Nigerian Judiciary and we call on the Attorney General to redirect himself by toeing the line of judicial integrity, honor and rule of law to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu receives earned justice.

“Once again, and in keeping with our statement of October 18, 2022, World Igbo Congress calls on the AGF and the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu now.”

Free Nnamdi Kanu – Senators demand.

Advertisements

Senators from the South East Caucus have demanded the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in obedience to Appeal Court order.

Daily Post reported that the caucus, comprising of eleven Senators, made the call in a statement issued and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

The Appeal Court last week acquitted and discharged the IPOB leader of terrorism charges leveled against him by the Federal government.

However, Kanu who was re-arrested from Kenya in June 2021, is still in the custody of the Department of State Services as the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami insisted that he was only discharged but yet to be acquitted.

Following the refusal of the President Muhammadu Bubari-led government to release the separatist as ordered by the Appeal Court, the Senate caucus asked the president to keep the promise he earlier made to the Igbos and release Kanu.

“We should be mindful of our diversity and the strengths we as a country derive from there. This is the time to show magnanimity and statesmanship. The Appeal Court has provided the leeway for the authorities to walk the talk as ones desirous of preserving Nigerias unity and respect for her diversity.

“Accordingly, we as a Caucus and stakeholders in the Nigeria project appeal to Mr President, to remember the promise he made to a delegation of elders of Igboland sometime ago and release Nnamdi Kanu, especially now that the Appeal Court by that ruling removed the burden of interference from him. Going on Appeal would ultimately negate that kind gesture,” the caucus stated.

Those who signed statement include: Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Minority Whip), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Majority Whip), Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), Senator Sam Egwu, Senator Stella Oduah and Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator T A Orji (Ochendo).

Others are: Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, Senator Onyewuchi Ezenwa, Senator Micheal Nnachi, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Senator Frank Ibezim, and Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Uba.

They made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday signed by Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, chairman of the Anambra Traditional Rulers Council and Chibuzo Opoko, the Methodist archbishop of Umuahia.

Others who signed the statement were Lawrence Agubuzu, the Enugu Traditional Rulers Council chairman and Valerian Okeke, Catholic archbishop of Onitsha.

The joint body said it welcomed the judgment of an Appeal Court which discharged Nnamdi and described it as an “unprecedented opportunity to overcome the challenge of trust that has obstructed the path to peace.”

The joint body added that it had consistently called on all stakeholders for peacebuilding and resolution of security challenges in the South East based on justice, equity, fairness and love.

“We have also supported the call for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the federal government to douse the current tensions across the Southeast and create an atmosphere for collaboration towards a constructive resolution of issues,” they stated. “The judgment of the appellate court presents a timely and unprecedented opportunity to overcome the challenge of trust that has obstructed the path to peace and opens the window to winning the hearts and minds of the people.”

The Igbo coalition of traditional and religious leaders added, “We, therefore, unequivocally support the call for the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in line with the unanimous judgment of the court that his extradition and subsequent trial was illegal.”

The traditional rulers and bishops said they had undertaken extensive consultations with all stakeholders to broker a permanent, regionally coordinated restoration of the South-East.

They noted that the march towards peace and the restoration of normalcy in society and the economy required the collective action of all people.
