2023: Peter Obi have former leaders, 18 govs’ backing – Ohanaeze.

Advertisements

About 18 sitting governors are behind the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said.

This was revealed in a statement made available to DAILY POST, Wednesday, by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

He said apart from the unnamed governors, a number of the country’s past leaders were also backing Obi’s candidature.

He disclosed that the governors cut across different political platforms, adding that the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and other political parties, were already afraid of the development.

Ohanaeze, while hailing the courage and the determination of Nigerians who are trooping out in the different parts of the country in support of Peter Obi, urged that the momentum be sustained.

“This is a movement to take back Nigeria from the days of locusts, greedy and selfish politicians.

“It is a movement to rescue the country from adversity, economic slump, ASUU strike, insecurity and corruption.

“Nigerians have demonstrated readiness to take back their country through the ballot box and it behoves on the INEC to make the votes count,” he said.

The Ohanaeze scribe while reviewing the ‘Obidients’ rally held across the country, stated that “the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and others are startled by the soaring popularity of the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, especially after the Obidients’ Independence Day rallies across the country cutting across ethnicity and religious lines. The mammoth crowd took the different cities of the country by storm.

“As we speak, about 18 Governors from the North and the South, cutting across party lines, are behind the scenes putting up structures for Obi to win the 2023 election. In addition, some former Presidents and elder statesmen are in support of Obi’s candidature.

“They are all convinced that Obi has something different from all the other candidates.

“We are glad that for the first time in the recent past, Nigerians are united in the dethronement of misgovernance in Aso Rock. They are determined to make a political change through the ballot box with a third force presidency.

“This is the first time we are seeing such a strong political movement in Nigeria that is not being sponsored by politicians, rather the masses own the project.

“You have seen the mass movement across the country and beyond; you have seen even children, the persons with special needs, the aged, everyone is part of this movement.”

He reiterated his call on the INEC not to truncate the will of the people.

“We are going to hold the commission accountable for their actions. The INEC staff should not scuttle the desire of the people by doing the bidding of money-bag politicians,” he cautioned

Buhari emphasizes on 2023 census.

Advertisements

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said the deployment of digital technology in the 2023 National Population and Housing Census would ensure effectiveness and more accuracy in the figures.

Buhari said Nigeria could rank third largest globally by 2050, after China and India with such a technology.

He spoke at the national stakeholders’ summit on the 2023 Population and Housing Census held at the State House.

Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman disclosed this in a statement he signed.

Buhari said a “reliable, credible, acceptable and successful census” will help the government in planning for development, especially in bolstering the social security programme that targets more vulnerable Nigerians.

He said: “The country’s inability to conduct a population census in the last 16 years has created an information vacuum as the data from the last census conducted in 2006 has been rendered out of date for planning purposes. It has therefore become imperative for the nation to conduct another national census to produce a new set of demographic and socio-economic data that will provide the basis for national planning and sustainable development.

“Population is a critical factor in a nation’s efforts toward achieving sustainable development. People are both the agents and beneficiaries of the development process. Knowledge of the national population in terms of size, distribution and socio-economic characteristics is required for planning purposes. This, therefore, makes the conduct of the census an essential governance activity.

“With a projected population of 216,783,381, Nigeria is the sixth most populous country in the world and the most populous country on the African continent. Due to the rapidly growing nature of the population and large proportion of the youthful population, Nigeria is also projected to be the third most populous country in the World by the year 2050 after India and China,” he said.
Despite Nigeria’s high-ranking position on the global demographic map, the President said its population censuses had been conducted irregularly and at intervals, longer than the United Nations recommended 10 years.

“This irregular and long interval of census taking in Nigeria has denied the nation the huge benefits of comprehensive baseline data for evidence-based decision-making.

“The nation requires a new data set to drive the implementation of the recently launched revised National Policy on Population for Sustainable Development and other government policies. The 2023 Census data is also needed to tackle the security challenges bedevilling the country as it will give an overview of the population, where we are and who we are.

“Ordinarily, conducting a population census is a routine national event that is the ultimate responsibility of every national government. Census taking cannot be left to the National Population Commission alone.

“Our Administration is convinced that the National Population Commission has the commitment and capacity to deliver to the nation a reliable, credible, acceptable and successful census. We are also satisfied with the deployment of technology by the Commission to ensure the conduct of the first fully digital census in Nigeria as the census methodology will enhance the data quality, inspire the confidence of the Nigerian people and acceptability of the census results.”

2023: Tinubu is Nigeria’s only solution – Oluwo.

Advertisements

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has described Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Presidential Congress (APC) as the solution to Nigeria’s challenges.

He also described Tinubu as a unifier whose conducts have been instrumental to the sustenance of one Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Alli Ibraheem, his Chief Press Secretary, Oba Akanbi noted that as a detribalised Nigerian, Tinubu turned Lagos State into a template for other States to copy from.

According to him, “Tinubu is a detribalized Nigerian. His milestones in turning Lagos State to a cynosure of all eyes is a credit to his image. Entrust Nigeria in his hand and go to sleep. You will see wonder when you wake up.”

While asking those that condemn the APC presidential candidate to assess his mental assets, Oluwo added that governance had nothing to do with age.

“Most of those castigating Tinubu have personal issues. Many are saying he is arrogant because he tells the truth.

“People may think he is arrogant because he tells the truth. Anybody who tells the truth is adjudged to be arrogant. People say I’m arrogant too. It is because I love and cherish the truth.

“Give him Nigeria to rule and go and sleep. He will do wonder before you wake up,” he said

Double nominations: Civil Society file for Shettima’s arrest, prosecution.

Advertisements

A Civil Society group, Center for Reform and Public Advocacy has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), demanding the arrest and prosecution of the Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Senator Kashim Shettima over alleged double nominations for the 2023 general election.

Shettima, who is to pair with former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next year presidential election on APC platform, was alleged to have been nominated twice by APC for two different constituencies at the same time in gross breach of the Electoral Act 2022.

According to the petition, Shettima signed both the INEC form EC9 on oath as the APC candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District of Borno State for the 2023 general elections and at the same time went ahead to sign another INEC form EC9 as Vice Presidential candidate of the APC, an action believed to have contravened the law.

The signing of two nomination forms by Shetima for two different constituencies is said to have specifically breached section 115(d) and (k) of the Electoral Act 2022 and attracts two years imprisonment by court upon conviction.

In the petition, signed by the Legal Adviser of the group and received by the office of the IGP on July 29, the group claimed to be a non-governmental organization, pursuing the enthronement of good governance, accountability, probity and transparency in public institutions.

The grouse of the group was that Shettima on oath willingly engaged in double nominations contrary to the provision of the Electoral Act, 2022, and ought to be arrested and put on trial by the police as required by law.

The petition obtained by DAILY POST correspondent read in part: “That the All Progressives Congress, APC, in compliance with section 29 of the Electoral Act, 2022, submitted the name of Senator Kashim Shetima to the Independent National Electoral Commission as its candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District of Borno State for the 2023 general election.

“That Senator Kashim Shetima signed INEC EC9 form on oath which is his nomination form as the candidate of the APC for Borno Central Senatorial District of Borno State for the 2023 general election.

“That INEC in compliance with section 29 of the Electoral Act 2022 on June 24, 2022, published the name of Senator Kashim Shetima as the APC candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District of Borno State for the 2023 general election.

“That after the said publication of Senator Kashim Shetima, the APC on July 15, 2022 submitted the name of Senator Kashim Shetima to INEC as its Vice Presidential Candidate for the 2023 Presidential election.

“That Senator Kashim Shetima also signed INEC EC9 form on oath which is his nomination form as Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC for the 2023 presidential election.

“That Borno Central Senatorial District of Borno State and the Vice Presidential position are two different constituencies. pp

“That section 115 (1) (d) provides: a person who signs a nomination paper or result form as a candidate in more than one constituency at the same election commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a maximum term of imprisonment for two years.

“That section 115(1) (k) provides; a person who signs a nomination paper consenting to be a candidate at an election knowing that he or she is ineligible to be a candidate at that election commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a maximum term of imprisonment for two years.

“That Senator Kashim Shetima having signed two nomination papers of two different constituencies violates section 115 (1) (d)(k) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“On the strength of the foregoing, having established a prima facie criminal cases against Senator Kashim Shetima, we therefore most respectfully, demand arrest and criminal prosecution of Senator Kashim Shetima for contravening section 115 (1) (d) (k) of the Electoral Act 2022.”

Prophet Bisi Olujobi reveals prophetic analysis on Peter Obi, Adeleke.

Advertisements

Prophet Bisi Olujobi has advised Osun governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke to ensure good governance in the state.

His statement on Monday noted that Adeleke was ordained “to re-write the history of Osun State with a golden pen”.

“That is the main reason God chose him above others, the people have suffered enough.

“God and men will not forgive him if he does otherwise”, the leader of Wisdom Church of God International warned.

Olujobi however called for supplications for Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

The cleric advised his supporters worldwide to embark on “strategic warfare prayer against assassination”.

“There will be an attempt on his life. If they pray well, it will be averted”, he said.

On the 2023 governorship battle in Lagos, the prophet called the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) standard bearer “a joker”.

“Olajide Adediran (Jandor) is a joker, he will lose gallantly unless an immediate step is taken.”

Olujobi added that he sees former Imo governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha “in chains”.

“Okorocha needs to pray very hard for him not to suffer heavy loss politically.”

On Ike Ekweremadu, the religious leader said the Senator would not “have an upper hand” in the case in the United Kingdom.

“It has been settled spiritually against him except he prays very well”, the statement added

Less than 24 hours after the declaration of Ademola Adeleke, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner of the 2022 Osun gubernatorial election, the state governor, Adegboyega Oyetola had called on his supporters to remain calm.

This is as the state governor also said he has taken cognisance of the result of Saturday’s guber poll as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement by Ismail Omipidan, his Chief Press Secretary, the governor who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, noted that the party would respond appropriately to the guber result.

He also admitted that he would need to consult widely with critical stakeholders in the APC.

“We have taken cognisance of the results of the governorship election in the State as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Sunday.

“The party would be responding appropriately after studying the results and consulting with critical stakeholders of the party,” he said.

While calling on the party members and supporters to remain calm, Governor Oyetola urged the residents to go about their businesses without hindrance.

“We cease this opportunity to call on security operatives to ensure maintenance of law and order,” he added.

The statement also disclosed that the state governor has directed security operatives to take adequate charge so as to prevent break down of law and order in any part of the state.

Recall with Noble Reporters Media that Adeleke defeated the incumbent governor, Oyetola by scoring 403,371 while the latter had 375,027 votes to be declared the winner by Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, the INEC Returning Officer for the election

2023: APGA candidate, Okorie alleges INEC bias in party’s crisis.

Advertisements

The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance for the 2023 general election, Chekwas Okorie, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to recognize Edozie Njoku as the authentic national chairman of APGA.

The call is on the heels of the judgement of a panel of the Supreme Court of Nigeria which sacked Ozonkpu Victor Oye and affirmed Edozie Njoku as substantive APGA National Chairman.

Recall with Noble Reporters Media that a panel of Supreme Court Justices, chaired by Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, who was appointed to replace ex-chairman of the panel, Justice Mary Ukaego Peter-Odili following her retirement, had ruled as lawful and legitimate, the convention of the All Progressive Grand Alliance held at Owerri, Imo State, which elected Edozie Njoku as the National Chairman and other members of the National Working Committee of the party.

However, Chekwas Okorie, who was the founder and pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, in a statement on Saturday, frowned at the alleged deviation from the truth by INEC and other authorities in recognizing Njoku as the party’s national chairman despite receiving a certified true copy of the judgment of the apex court in the land.

He also questioned why the electoral commission has continued to deal with the factional leadership of APGA, which he alleged, clearly lacked legal backing or legitimacy to enter into any form of transaction with the INEC on behalf of the party.

He said the implications of the Commission’s activities are capable of causing APGA to be excluded from participating in the forthcoming 2023 general election together with its candidates who have emerged through congresses and primaries in which appropriate notifications were given to INEC and duly acknowledged by the commission.

Okorie warned that “the exclusion of APGA from participating in the 2023 general election shall result in the cancellation and nullification of the entire general election according to the clear provisions of the electoral act and the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

“The entire amount of about N350 billion appropriated by the National Assembly for the conduct of the 2023 general election will go down the drain”.

He continued, “It stands to reason that the 29th May 2023 date for the inauguration of a new government in Nigeria may not be realized since the nation has to source fresh funds and produce a new timetable to conduct a fresh general election”.

The party stalwart noted that all these ominous possibilities are avoidable if the Independent National Electoral Commission can do the needful without further delay.

Okorie, however, called on President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney General of the federation, Abubakar Mallami, the leadership of the National Assembly, Civil Society and pro-democracy organisations as well as good-spirited Nigerians to intervene in the matter before irreparable damage is done to the nation’s democratic process.

He said,” vote buying is a challenge to democracy. The populace does not have hope. They are getting what they can get. It is a bad situation. We do not know when to get out of it. The new breeds of politicians will help us to get out of it but people are hungry. They need food. Vote buying cannot stop now until we see real dividends of democracy

“My domain is peaceful. I have told them nobody should stay home. They should show their voting strength. We want to see our strength. Nobody should stay home and watch television.”

The monarch also maintained his stance on delivering over 90,000 votes for the All Progressives Congress, Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

According to him, he canvassed votes for Oyetola because of his prompt payment of salaries.

He said, “I am confident of delivering 90,000 votes. It is not easy for the governor to move from the status quo and do what is right. He has been paying full salary. Osun is a civil servant state and the people depend on salaries.

“He has been paying debt inherited and didn’t use the money for frivolities. I have told my people to vote for the APC and they will vote for APC. The governor is doing a great job. I believe the person doing a great job should continue. I want all persons to vote peacefully.”

PDP Crisis: Atiku needs Wike – Okowa.

The camp of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate’s running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has said the Delta State governor would work with his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike.

Reports have it that Wike and some PDP chieftains are aggrieved over the choice of Okowa as the party’s presidential running mate.

Following his emergence, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, constituted a committee to select his running mate.

The committee had picked Wike, who came second during the PDP presidential primary election in Abuja.

But, Atiku had ignored the committee’s recommendation and opted for Okowa as his running mate.

Atiku’s decision is believed to have aggrieved Wike and other party chieftains.

However, the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, assured that Okowa needs Wike’s support ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Aniagwu assured that Okowa would work with other leaders in the south to get votes for the PDP.

The Commissioner said, “Okowa will work with other leaders in the south and across the country to galvanize the voters. He (Okowa) believes that to have an inroad in Rivers State, for example, he will need leaders led by Wike to get the votes.

“Okowa will work with Wike very well. Okowa will also reach out to our brothers and sisters in the South-West and in the South-East, which is already happening. The challenge at hand is not a one-man show.

“Beyond members of our party, Nigerians believe that the PDP should get it right as the major option for the people ahead of the 2023 general election.”

Nigeria ruled by bad leaders – Peter Obi.

Advertisements

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi has stated that Nigeria is suffering from bad leadership, and there might be a crisis in the country soon.

Obi stated this on Tuesday during a visit to the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Abuja.

The former Anambra governor called for a change from the sharing formula to the production formula, adding that Nigeria is not a producing country.

“Nigeria is not a producing country. The cumulative effect of what we’re suffering today is bad leadership,” Obi said.

“It’s a leadership that concentrates on sharing. We have to move from sharing formula to production formula.

“All our young people in their productive age aren’t doing anything, so we’re going to have a crisis.”

2023: NASS will amend electoral act – Lawan.

Advertisements

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has said that efforts will be made by the National Assembly to amend the electoral act to serve as safeguard against weaknesses identified in the law.

Lawan made this known on Tuesday at plenary, following a matter of National importance brought by Sen. Yahaya Abdullahi (PDP-Kebbi), NAN reports.

The Senate President described the judgment by the Supreme Court on Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act as a landmark judgment that vindicates the National Assembly.

He said further amendment of the Act would strengthen it ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“Let me say that this is one major landmark judgment by the Supreme Court, that the National Assembly had done their job and the court upheld it.

“The idea of what method of primaries should be adopted at the moment is entirely left for the political parties to decide.

“But as we implement the electoral act 2022, we are supposed to be very observant of the strengths and weaknesses of the law.

“This law is supposed to improve on the electoral processes and procedures in our country.

“So, it is for us to ensure that where there are weaknesses, we try to come up with measures, amendments to deal with the issues of weaknesses in the law.

“And, I’m sure it will come full circle when the 2023 elections are held.

“I have no doubt in my mind that all of us in the National Assembly, not only in the Senate, but in the House as well, feel that we must do everything and everything possible to make this electoral act serve the purpose for which it was passed and assented to.

“Therefore, I believe that we should work tirelessly to take note of those areas that we feel are not strong enough – that are weak points in the law – with a view to strengthening them before we finally take our exit in 2023,” he said.

Rising under Order 42 of the Senate Standing Orders, Abdullahi in his presentation lauded the Ninth Assembly for resisting the pressure from the executive to amend section 84(12) of Electoral Act 2022.

He applauded the Supreme Court for the clarity, decisiveness and unanimity of its verdict in upholding the separation of powers principle enshrined in our 1999 constitution.

He said the Supreme Court verdict was a major victory towards true democratic governance anchored on the rule of law.

“In my view, the Supreme Court verdict should be celebrated for the following reasons.

“It restored and anchors the power of making laws to the National Assembly, and establishes a principle that once the President accents to a Bill he/she can’t approbate and reprobate, i.e. he/she cannot go to the courts to amend/reject the Bill in part or in whole”, he said.

Abdullahi, however, emphasised the need to amend the electoral act to revert to the Direct mode of primaries.

“One issue still remains outstanding, and that is amending the Act (after the 2023 elections) to revert to our earlier stance on Direct primaries.

“Our recent nasty experience of the misuse of consensus and delegate system has vindicated our earlier position on the merit of direct primaries provided that a verifiable membership register of political parties kept simultaneously at the Ward level and with INEC with all the necessary safeguards against corruption and data manipulation, is put in place.

“As the political process towards 2023 unfolds, the National Assembly needs to be observant of the loopholes and weaknesses of the 2022 Electoral Act.

“So that a comprehensive assessment is undertaken to provide adequate grounds for making amendments to the Act before the end of the term of office of the ninth Assembly in May 2023”, he said.
