Second Niger bridge is completed – Fashola.

Advertisements

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Wednesday, confirmed that the construction of the 2nd Niger bridge is now completed and will soon be released to the public for use.

He stated this at an ongoing press briefing to present the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s (retd.) scorecard in Abuja.

According to him, the only factor delaying the commissioning of the road is the construction of the link road which the recent surge of flooding has impeded.

He said, “I can confirm that the second Niger bridge itself is finished. People can walk through the bridge now unimpeded. What remains is the four-kilometer link road on the Asaba side.

“Right now, our dredger is in place, we have to rebuild the road by reclaiming sand, the recent surge of flood has slowed us down. On the Onitsha side, there is a 7kilometer road that links the bridge and the Onitsha-Owerri interchange.”

This follows the Tuesday morning attack and killing of some persons at the Gulu General Hospital and the abduction of an unspecified number of people, including medical personnel.

In a statement by his media aide, Mary Noel-Berje, Mr Bello described the attack as

callous, inhuman and condemnable.

Mr Bello described the targeted bandits’ attacks around the Gulu axis and the hospital as regrettable, stressing that there was a need for a swift, intensified security operation to not hamper the smooth healthcare delivery in the area.

“We are concerned about the recent rise in armed banditry and kidnappings in Gulu communities when we are rejoicing and consolidating on the successes so far recorded in other affected areas.

“As a responsible government, we’ll not rest on our oars until we triumph over evil,” he said.

He disclosed that the state was already collaborating and supporting the joint security apparatus in its drive to launch a sporadically coordinated onslaught to overcome the bandits and sanitise the area.

Mr Bello commiserated with the families of the deceased and assured that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, would do everything possible to secure the release of those abducted.

The governor also gave assurance that the government would ensure all those who fled during the attacks returned to their homes.

The bandits, in recent times, intensified attacks on Gulu town and other adjoining communities, killing many people, abducting several persons, stealing foodstuff and setting ablaze settlements in the area.

Niger Massacre: Army decry posted photos of “falling soldiers”

The Nigerian Army has decried the posting of images of the soldiers killed by terrorists in the Ajata-Aboki, Gurmana ward in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State on Thursday.

The gunmen had attacked a mining site in the area killing over thirty Nigerian soldiers, seven mobile policemen and six civilians, just as scores were wounded and several others abducted.

The Army in a press statement signed by Brigadier General, Onyema Nwachukwu, Director Army Public Relations urged Nigerians to show some restrain in posting such images.

He argued that those who lost their breadwinners deserved to be properly notified of the incident and not to get such information through the media.

Nwachukwu said,” some clips of the incident have surfaced online and we wish to encourage well meaning Nigerians to exercise some restraint in posting images of such occurrence, mindful that our brothers and sisters who may have lost their breadwinners deserve to be properly notified and not to get such information via the media. We mention this, mindful of the inalienable rights of citizens to use the social media which is respected”.

The Director Army Public Relations explained that the soldiers paid the supreme price on their way to respond to a distress call of an attack on a mining site in the area, when they ran into an ambush staged by the criminal elements.

According to him, “the troops of the Nigerian Army (NA) deployed in Shiroro general area responded to a distress call of bandits attack on people operating a mining site. Enroute the location, the troops ran into an ambush staged by the criminal elements. Sadly, a number of personnel paid the supreme price in fierce firefight that ensued.”

The statement also stated that the location had been reinforced and troops were on the trail of the criminals with some already neutralized, adding, “the GOC 1 Division has moved to the location to take charge of the follow up operations”.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, made this announcement on Thursday during the Special Weekly ministerial briefing at the State House in Abuja.

According to him, the 206 billion naira project has directly employed 1,486 people, while 8,110 indirect jobs have equally been created.

The Second Niger Bridge was first proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

However, in August 2012, the Federal Executive Council under then-President Jonathan’s approved a contract worth ₦325 million for the final planning and design of the bridge.

A somewhat complicated procedure continued under President Muhammad Buhari, who first cancelled the earlier contract in August 2015.

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State and his Niger State counterpart, Sani Bello, have reconciled.

This is just as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) says it is working hard to ensure a successful nation convention.

The event will be held on March 26 after postponements and accusations that the leadership was buying time to remain in office.

President Muhammadu Buhari was forced to issue a statement banning further divisive actions and utterances.

As part of peace efforts and reconciliation, Buni and Bello met Thursday night in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

At the Yobe Government Lodge, Buni applauded the CECPC members on the level of preparations towards the convention.

“Since I travelled, the party has not stopped. His Excellency (Bello) has done very well in managing the affairs.

“We are here to discuss the issues going forward. We are now at the finishing line in the preparations for our convention

“We are putting heads together to achieve this task ahead. I want to emphasise that the March 26 (convection date) is sacrosanct.”

Buni, however, clarified that the visit was not a formal meeting of the CECPC.

“CECPC members just came to welcome me back to the country and wish me well after returning from a medical trip”, he clarified.

In his remark, Bello said he had acted as party chairman and that we made lots of progress towards the convention.

He mentioned the inauguration of State Chairmen, adoption of zoning formula for the convention and actions on some decisions CECPC took before Buni left Nigeria.

“I can tell you for free that in the last one week, we have ensured that we are good to go for the national convention”, Bello added.
