As a player, Silas began his career in 1964 and played for several teams over the next two decades before retiring in 1980. He made two All-Star teams, in 1972 and 1975, and won three NBA championships during the 1970s.

Following his playing career, Silas spent decades coaching throughout the league. He last led the Charlotte Bobcats from 2010-12. Michael Jordan, who serves as the Charlotte Hornets Chairman, also mourned Silas in a statement released Sunday.

“Our Hornets family mourns the passing of Paul Silas,” Jordan wrote. “Paul was an incredible leader and motivator who served as our head coach on two occasions. He combined the knowledge developed over nearly 40 years as an NBA player and coach with an innate understanding on how to mix discipline with his never-ending positivity.”

“On or off the court, Paul’s enthusiastic and engaging personality was accompanied by an anecdote for every occasion. He was one of the all-time great people in our game, and he will be missed,” Jordan further added. “My thoughts, and the thoughts of our entire organization, are with his wife, Carolyn; his children, Paul and Stephen; and the entire Silas family.”

Returning Nets star Irving apologizes, to focus on basketball

Advertisements

Kyrie Irving apologized Sunday morning to anyone who felt threatened or hurt when he posted a link to a documentary with anti-Semitic material, clearing the way to finally play again for the Brooklyn Nets.

Once he did, Irving tried to keep the focus on basketball. Deeper conversations, such as about the demonstrators outside the arena or a possible appeal of his suspension without pay, would be left for another day.

“I’m just here to focus on the game,” Irving said after scoring 14 points in helping the Nets to a 127-115 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Irving had missed eight games since he was suspended by the team on Nov. 3, hours after he refused to say he had no anti-Semitic beliefs when meeting with reporters at the Nets’ practice facility.

Back at the building for the team’s morning shootaround, Irving said he should have handled that interview differently.

“I don’t stand for anything close to hate speech or anti-Semitism or anything that is going against the human race,” Irving said. “I feel like we all should have an opportunity to speak for ourselves when things are assumed about us and I feel it was necessary for me to stand in this place and take accountability for my actions because there was a way I should have handled all this and as I look back and reflect when I had the opportunity to offer my deep regrets to anyone that felt threatened or felt hurt by what I posted, that wasn’t my intent at all.”

Fans arriving at Barclays Center for the game found the plaza area filled with dozens of members of the group Israel United in Christ, black men chanting and handing out paraphernalia that contained anti-Semitic material. The organization’s website says its mission is to “wake up the 12 Tribes of Israel.”

Asked about having that group’s support, Irving said he hadn’t seen them, adding that it was “a conversation for another day.”

As for whether action against the Nets was coming – members of the National Basketball Players Association, including executive director Tamika Tremaglio, were at shootaround and the game – Irving said others would be handling that for him.

“I’m sure some things will be done in the future,” Irving said. “There’s no timetable on that right now.”

Irving said he was initially searching for more information about his heritage when he posted a link to “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America” on his Twitter page. When first asked about it, he was defiant about his right to post material that interested him. Then, he refused to apologize or clarify his religious beliefs during another interview a few days later, leading to his suspension.

“I was rightfully defensive that there was an assumption that I could be anti-Semitic, or that I meant to post a documentary to stand side by side with all the views in the documentary,” Irving said, adding, “How can you call someone an anti-Semite if you don’t know them?”

But his tone was more reflective while speaking for about 12 minutes Sunday morning, thanking family and friends for their support.

“I meant no harm to any person, to any group of people and yeah, this is a big moment for me because I’m able to learn throughout this process that the power of my voice is very strong, the influence that I have within my community is very strong, and I want to be responsible for that,” Irving said. “In order to do that, you have to admit when you’re wrong and in instances where you hurt people and it impacts them.”

Nike suspended its relationship with Irving and the fallout seemed to further strain the relationship between Irving and the Nets, who declined to give him a contract extension last summer. He missed most of their home games last season when he refused to get vaccinated against COVID-19, as was mandated at the time in New York City.

The organization said he was “unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets” when it suspended him. But the Nets praised Irving on Sunday for the steps he has since taken, though it’s unclear what those entailed.

“Kyrie took ownership of this journey and had conversations with several members of the Jewish community,” the team said in a statement. “We are pleased that he is going about the process in a meaningful way.”

Ben Simmons isn’t doing so well right; could be traded soon.

Advertisements

Ben Simmons came into this season looking to prove a lot of haters wrong. Instead, he is proving a lot of people right. Simmons averages a triple-single and is too scared to shoot the ball.

The Nets as a whole are in shambles right now. Kyrie Irving was suspended from the team while Kevin Durant has had to carry the team on his shoulders. Simmons has been nowhere to be found throughout all of this, and he has even run into injury issues.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Various rumors state that Ben Simmons could be traded soon, although it’s a little soon to tell if it will actually happen. The Nets are a desperate team right now, and according to Ian Begley, Simmons is being brought up in trade discussions.

Who would trade for him, you may ask? Well, there are a few teams out there who could use someone like Simmons. According to Sean Deveney, one of those teams is the Dallas Mavericks. Luka Doncic has been doing everything himself this season, and they could use just a bit more help.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Additionally, the Nets are playing against the Dallas Mavericks tonight, and Simmons is expected to rejoin the team. This will be a good opportunity for the Mavericks to see Simmons in action. Of course, a trade is still far away, but the timing of this report is interesting.

Unfortunately, this is probably bad news for Simmons and his confidence. Simmons is playing poorly this season and he has shown himself to be someone who is easily frazzled. Overall, it’s not a good situation for anyone.

White House Pens Statement On Brittney Griner’s Appeal Denial

Advertisements

Although the Biden administration has been chastised over Brittney Griner’s continued incarceration, the White House continues to denounce the WNBA star’s sentence. Earlier this year, Griner was detained while traveling in Russia after officials located cannabis oil cartridges in her luggage. Griner has long contested that it was all a mistake, reportedly stating that the marijuana was prescribed by a physician in the U.S.

A Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison amid global cries for her release. We reported today (October 25) that Griner’s appeal was rejected and her sentence will stand, and in response, the White House has issued a formal statement expressing its disappointment in the decision.

It was also mentioned that the president has consistent communication with Griner’s loved ones. Her supporters have remained steadfast in spreading awareness about her case, especially the baller’s wife, Cherelle Griner. The concerned spouse has given regular updates about Griner’s condition and news from the White House.

Adam Silver Responds To LeBron James.

Advertisements

LeBron James has made it abundantly clear over the last year or so that he wants to be the owner of a new NBA franchise in Las Vegas. The league has said that if the expansion were to happen today, they would go to Vegas and Seattle. Of course, that has not yet taken place, although the league is very much aware of LeBron’s new desire.

Recently, Adam Silver was on NBA Today where he spoke to host Malika Andrews about the potential for expansion. Silver noted that the league isn’t prioritizing it right now as they just want to get through the collective bargaining agreement. That said, Silver loves to see players like LeBron wanting to stay involved with the league after their retirement.

Advertisements

“I think its very healthy for the league when you have sort of this life-cycle of players moving into management, potentially moving into ownership,” Silver said. “Obviously Michael Jordan is the owner of Charlotte…its great for the ecosystem. I’m thrilled that LeBron aspires to be an NBA team owner one day. Las Vegas specifically will make a great location for a franchise one day. We have the WNBA team there, the Aces, that obviously just won the championship.”

The prospect of expansion is one that should delight NBA fans. A team in Las Vegas would do wonders for the league and bringing a franchise back to Seattle would also be huge.

Hopefully, Silver and company can make this all happen

Steve Kerr makes impassioned gun control plea.

Advertisements

Steve Kerr, the head coach of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, has demanded politicians in the United States take action after at least 19 children and two adults were killed in a school shooting in Texas.

On Tuesday afternoon, a teenager, armed with two assault rifles, opened fire on children and teachers at an elementary school in the small town of Uvalde, in what was the deadliest assault at a US school in a decade.

Speaking before the Warriors faced the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, a visibly upset Kerr called on US senators to reconsider their stances on gun reform.

“When are we going to do something? I’m tired,” Kerr said. “I’m so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there.”

“There’s 50 senators right now who refuse to vote on HR8, which is a background check rule that the House passed a couple years ago. It’s been sitting there for two years,” Kerr added.

“Do you realise that 90 percent of Americans, regardless of political party, want background checks, universal background checks? Ninety percent of us. We are being held hostage by 50 senators in Washington who refuse to even put it to a vote, despite what we the American people want. They won’t vote on it because they want to hold onto their own power. It’s pathetic. I’ve had enough.”

The shooting at Robb Elementary School spurred an outpouring of grief and rage, with many leading politicians pleading for gun control legislation to be enacted.

“It’s time to turn this pain into action for every parent, for every citizen of this country,” US President Joe Biden said, his voice heavy with emotion. “It’s time for those who obstruct or delay or block common-sense gun laws – we need to let you know that we will not forget.”

Meanwhile, Warriors superstar Stephen Curry was among Kerr’s players who stood behind their head coach.

“I got kids, send them to school every day, drop them off. And you feel for the parents that are going through what they’re going through,” Curry told reporters after the Warriors lost the match to Mavericks.

“I can’t even imagine the pain. So for coach [Kerr] to come up here and say what he said and every word that he said was powerful, was meaningful.”

Deborah: NBA calls for switch prosecution of suspects.

Advertisements

The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned extra-judicial killings in any part of the country, describing them as reprehensible, barbaric and unacceptable.

A statement signed by the President of the bar, Olumide Akpata also called on security agencies to do more to stem these ugly developments, and to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous acts are made to face the full wrath of the law.

Citing the specific cases of a young man (simply identified as David) in Lagos who was reportedly lynched by commercial motorcyclists around Lekki; and the incident in Sokoto involving the murder of Miss Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto by some of her school mates for alleged blasphemy, the NBA asked government to immediately commence the prosecution of all suspects involved in these brutal and arbitrary killings in order to send a strong signal that such acts will no longer be tolerated in Nigeria.

The NBA said it believes that the prompt and effective prosecution of the alleged killers will instill confidence in the citizens, promote accountability, and signpost the government’s commitment to the rule of law.

With particular reference to the murder of Deborah Yakubu and related developments in Sokoto, the NBA said it is worried by unconfirmed reports that the suspects have been charged with mere breach of public peace and called on the Sokoto State Government to immediately rethink its prosecution strategy and file charges that truly reflect the gravity of the situation.

On the demand for the release of the suspects by some protesting youths coupled with assault on innocent citizens, burning of worship centres and destruction of property, the NBA said this is worrisome and clearly a test of the will of the State to fully enforce its laws and foster rule of law.

On its annual conference of the Section on Public Interest and Development Law, SPIDEL scheduled to hold next week in Sokoto, the NBA said, having critically reviewed the current security condition in the state, it has become apparent that it cannot guarantee the safety of participants and accordingly, the Conference has been postponed also as a mark of respect for the memory of the slain Deborah Yakubu.

The NBA urged the State Government to fully collaborate with the Federal Government to initiate measures — and where necessary deploy its coercive instruments — to restore peace and order to the State, safeguard lives and property and dissuade vandalism and impunity

Chelsea takeover: NBA boss joins Stephen Pagliuca bid

Advertisements

NBA chairman Larry Tanenbaum is among the investors to have joined the bid led by Stephen Pagliuca to buy Chelsea.

Pagliuca, the co-owner of the NBA’s Boston Celtics as well as Serie A side Atalanta, was at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday to watch Chelsea thump Southampton 6-0, before holding talks with advisors and club executives.

He has been looking around for investors to join his bid, having previously approached former Walt Disney chairman Bob Iger, and now Sky News report that he has struck a deal with Tanenbaum, who also chairs the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) group that owns the Toronto Raptors, MLS side Toronto FC and NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs.

Before the final shortlist of bidders was announced, Tanenbaum was said to have launched his own bid to buy Chelsea.

The Canadian has now agreed to back Pagliuca, who has also received support from John Burbank, founder of the San Francisco hedge fund Passport Capital, and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

Tanenbaum’s MLSE have a rich history of investment in sports property development, owning and investing in stadiums for each of their teams.

On top of offering up some financial support, Tanenbaum is expected to help Pagliuca with his longstanding work to combat antisemitism – a fight which current Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has long supported with significant funding.

Tanenbaum has earned significant praise for his willingness to use his platform and wealth to promote change across society, and sources close to the bid believe this could work in Pagliuca’s favour.

NBA Nets star, Kevin Durant fined $25k for cursing at Fan.

Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Friday for directing obscene language toward a fan, the league announced.

The incident took place with 9.4 seconds remaining in the second quarter of Brooklyn’s 113-111 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

Durant, the 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player with Oklahoma City and a two-time NBA champion with Golden State, is averaging 29.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists for the Nets in 43 games this season.

Durant, a three-time Olympic champion for US teams of NBA stars, would be among the league’s top season scorers but has not played in 70% of the Nets’ games to qualify for consideration.

At 36-34, the Nets rank eighth in the Eastern Conference.

Durant was sidelined from mid-January to early March due to a sprained left knee.

Last Sunday, Durant scored a season-high 53 points, pulled down six rebounds and passed off nine assists in Brooklyn’s 110-107 victory over the New York Knicks.

Nigerian Bar sues Buhari over Adamu’s tenure extension.

The extension to his tenure was announced three days after his supposed retiring date by the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammad Dingyadi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has filed a suit to challenge the extension of the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The suit was filed against Buhari, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Police Service Commission, and Adamu.

“The NBA’s position in the Suit is that Mr Adamu ceased to be a member of the Nigeria Police Force when he attained the milestone of thirty-five years of service,” NBA president Olumide Akpata said in a statement.

“Therefore, the President’s extension of Mr Adamu’s tenure by three months, in the NBA’s respectful view, is unconstitutional.”

Adamu was due to retire from the police on February 1 having spent a maximum of 35 years in service.

The extension to his tenure was announced three days after his supposed retiring date by the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammad Dingyadi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Dingyadi said the extension was necessary to give room for the proper selection of a successor.

In the suit, the NBA sought the judicial determination of the constitutionality of the extension of Adamu’s tenure as the Inspector-General of Police for three months.

The association said the extension of the IGP”s tenure by three months is unconstitutional.

“The NBA’s decision to take this extraordinary line of action is underpinned by an urgent need, and a sacred duty, to reassert the supremacy of the rule of law in the face of growing impunity and the seeming reluctance of Law Officers in Government to give proper counsel,” NBA said.

“In the grand scheme of things, the NBA is wary that the more government officials casually violate the law, the harder it would become to expect citizens to be compliant.”

The association also noted that “citizens take their cues from their leaders and public office holders who flout the laws of the country that they are meant to uphold will discover sooner or later that their examples will be followed by those that they purport to govern.”

NBA said it is determined to put an end to the ubiquity of acts of impunity, especially by those in high public offices, portends an existential threat to the survival of Nigeria and her “hard-won democracy.”

“As the outcome of the Suit is awaited, the NBA will continue to condemn and confront lawlessness in any form and from all quarters,” NBA said.

Fmr NBA President – We’ve never been against Igbos

Advertisements

The legal luminary explained that the governor had the constitutional right to impose curfew on any part of the state under him if there are threats of breakdown of law and order to avert anarchy.

The Former President of Nigerian Bar Association and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Onueze CJ Okocha, has posited that Rivers State has never been at war with the Igbos of the South-East.

Okocha, who was reacting to the curfew imposed on Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State by the government, asserted that the decision of the State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, based on advice of the State Security Council, was constitutional and done in good faith.

He described the incident that happened in Oyigbo, where members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, killed ten (10) security operatives leading to imposition of curfew in the area as unfortunate.

Advertisements

Okocha in Port Harcourt on Wednesday said Rivers State and the Igbos have always enjoyed cordial relationship in areas of marriage and trading, adding that the two groups were not ready to be at dagger heads.

The SAN stated that over 60 percent of business in the state were owned by the Igbos, regretting why some individuals would be fanning embers of war among the two groups.

He said, “Our relationship is very cordial, it is only these political boundaries of states of the federation that have tend to divide people. Igbos control 50 to 60 percent of commercial activities in Rivers state. I have many of them as my friends.

“I wonder why anybody will raise this banner of ethnic jingoism. We have never as Rivers people had problem with Igbos. Most of us, including myself, my mother came from Onitsha, which is one major kingdoms in Igboland.”

Advertisements

Okocha noted that many Igbos have been appointed to serve in the state as commissioners, Special Advisers and heads of Ministries of Government under Governor Wike, wondering why some people would claim Igbos were hated by the state.

“So why should anybody begin to allege oh, some of us don’t like Igbos and I heard that unfortunate label being labelled as an accusation that our Governor hates the Igbo. How can? There are Igbos in his government who are serving in Rivers State. How many Rivers people are in any government, cabinet, in that matter, in anywhere else apart from Rivers state.

“But Igbos are serving in the Governor’s cabinet, Yoruba are on his advisory council, are on his executive council and many of them are activists here in Rivers State. we have even have a political organisation call Indigenes Without Boarder,” he said.

Okocha said it was wrong for the banned IPOB members to cause public unrest in the state having been proscribed by law, adding that the governor acted in defense of law and order, as it was a constitutional responsibility of government.

Advertisements

“So it is totally unlawful for anybody to begin to carry that banner of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and begin to wreak the kind of havoc that we saw played out in some parts of Port Harcourt. Mile One, Mile Two area, Emenike, Ikokwu axis and then in Oyigbo, a place which is the neighbouring town between us and Abia State. Most unfortunate.

“Lawlessness and unlawful assemblies ought not to tolerated in a country that is working to have law and order, and peace to face the development of our country. So it was very unfortunate.”

He explained that in any part of a state where there is breakdown of law and order, a Governor is constitutional obliged to impose a curfew, which was exactly what Governor Wike.

“But he has assessed the security situation and based on the advise he got from the security agencies, I believe he was perfectly justified to impose curfew in those parts of the state where there was total breakdown of law and order,” he stated.

Olumide Akpata describes ‘Parallel NBA’ Move As Unfortunate.

Advertisements

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata, has described the formation of a parallel NBA as unfortunate, calling for a united body at a time when the country needs them the most.

Mr Akpata who was sworn in as NBA’s 30th President, while giving his inaugural speech on Friday, faulted the move to establish a regional bar.

“I am not unaware of very recent events and agitations that have tended to divide our Bar along regional and religious lines. This is rather unfortunate for an egalitarian Association like ours. The Bar that I want to lead henceforth is one that is united on all fronts and that recognises that our diversity is, perhaps, our greatest strength. I plead with all Nigerian lawyers to bear this philosophy of unity in mind as we commence a new journey together today.

“This enormous task cannot be achieved if we continue to fan the embers of division at a time when we desperately need to unite and speak with one firm voice. We must be kind, magnanimous, respectful, and sensitive in our words and actions, as doing otherwise would be a great disservice to our vision of building a stronger and formidable bar. Now is the time to come together because a divided Bar is a defeated Bar.”

Following the withdrawal of the invitation extended by the Bar to the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, some lawyers had alleged discrimination against the governor.

Two lawyers based in Kaduna, Nuhu Ibrahim and Abdulbasit Suleiman, describing themselves as Convener 1 and 2, on Thursday, announced that they and others of like minds had formed a ‘New Nigerian Bar Association’ NNBA.

In a statement released on social media, the lawyers said: “The New Nigerian Bar Association members feel that their interests are no longer taken into consideration in major decisions of the NBA hence the formation of this Association.

According to them, membership of the NBA is not mandatory, adding that Section 40 of the Constitution permits freedom of association.

The new NBA members said they were in consultations with “very Senior Lawyers of Northern Nigeria extraction and those practicing therein with a view to constituting the Trustees and for purposes of fixing a date for the formal inauguration of the Association.”

The NNBA also claimed that the NBA offices were lopsided against Northern lawyers.

“A cursory chronicle of the membership composition of major organs of the NBA would reveal lopsided representation despite having large numbers of Lawyers from all parts of the country and especially Northern Nigeria who have diligently paid their Bar practicing fees and have distinguished themselves in the legal profession.

“The New Nigerian Bar Association feels that Lawyers, as professionals like Doctors and Accountants should have more than one Association regulated by the General Council of the Bar.”

Senior Lawyers Fault Move, Call For Caution
The news of a parallel body of the Nigerian Bar Association has elicited mixed reactions from lawyers across the country.

While some are opposed to the move, others say it is within the rights of the conveners to do the same.

Mike Ozekhome, SAN, who spoke at the handover ceremony of the NBA leadership on Friday, advised aggrieved members against forming an alternative association.

Ozekhome said, “drop all these issues of trying to form an alternative Bar, whether you call it new NBA or progressive NBA, it’s not going to work.

Advertisements

“The reason is that when you begin to create a different Bar, calling it, for example, Northern Bar or new Bar, then people, very soon, are going to start calling for Southern Nigerian Army, Southern Nigerian Navy, Western Nigerian Air Force, Eastern Nigeria Tax Authority, etc; where are we heading to? That is nothing but balkanisation of Nigeria and God forbid.”

Meanwhile, another senior lawyer, Yusuf Ali SAN, said, “Nobody has contacted me about the formation of any parallel organisation. I’ve not been consulted, I’ve not been contacted, but I want to advise caution on all the sides.

“Our elders have a saying that beheading is not the answer for headache. We are better off with our numbers and diversity of the Association.”

He also said that if in the future such a split becomes necessary, “it shouldn’t be borne out of disagreement. It should be something that comes because our numbers have become so huge and that there are needs. It should also be a pan-Nigerian thing.

Advertisements

“So, for me, this is just an event; it is quite unfortunate, but I think it is a matter that we should address at a conference table.

“I don’t think we should join Nigerian politicians to behave the way they normally do; you’re dissatisfied, form your own party. I’m dissatisfied, I form my own party. That’s not the best way to go, and as leaders in the country, by virtue of our training, we should show a good example and provide leadership to others to emulate us. We should not because we have issues within ourselves, balkanise our association.

“Some of us have our reservations about the decision of the NBA excluding Mallam El-Rufai, from the conference, but, that notwithstanding, we should still keep our heads and take rational decisions in the interest of our Association, our profession, and our country. I ask for understanding and caution.”

In his own reaction, Jibrin Okutepa SAN said the New NBA’s move was not surprising considering recent happenings in the Bar.

Advertisements

He argued that many honest lawyers were disenchanted because the NBA had lost its values, and the New NBA members had the constitutional right to form another association.

“If you have read me in several papers – myself, Femi Falana and several others – we have spoken sufficiently to the Constitutional iniquities of making Nigerian lawyers be members of the NBA, particularly that the NBA has lost it value. “So, if any lawyer feels aggrieved that he wants to form a new association, what stops them from doing so?

That is within their rights under Section 49 of the Constitution. So, I do not share the views of those who say you must be forced to be a member of the NBA. I don’t share that view. We have chosen to be members of the NBA because we believe that the NBA will live up to the standard of its motto, which is promoting the rule of law.

“But in the past years have you seen NBA promoting rule of law? Or the rule of personal aggrandisement?, he asked.

Just in: Olumide Akpata Sworn In As 30th NBA President.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has sworn in its 30th President, Mr Olumide Akpata.

He was sworn-in at a short ceremony held at the NBA National Secretariat in Abuja.

The ceremony which was streamed live online marked the end of the tenure of the Paul Usoro administration.

Mr. Akpata immediately thanked the past executive for ensuring that the Association was held together after which he swore in members of his executives.

In his inaugural address after his swearing-in, Mr Akpata called on lawyers to unite as the work ahead of the Association is enormous

Akpata, said he considers it a great honour and privilege on the epochal 60th anniversary of the NBA, “to be sworn in as the 30th President of the foremost professional membership association in Nigeria and the most influential network of legal practitioners in Africa.”

Akpata who was declared the winner of the keenly contested poll by NBA Electoral Committee on July 31, will lead the Affairs of the bar for the next two years.

The inaugural speech reads in part:

“It is apposite to begin the formal part of the address by tackling two major issues arising from the 2020 NBA election – the seeds of discord that were sown during the election campaigns and the issues pertaining to the election process itself.

The Need for Unity at the Bar

“I am not oblivious of the cleavages that emerged during the campaign and the attempt to pitch senior members of the bar against their younger counterparts. We were all witnesses to the widespread agitations against the holders of the enviable rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria to the extent that some people were eagerly anticipating a revolution. In some ways, this was understandable, having regard to the issues that characterised the election and the uniqueness of my candidacy, being the first non-Senior Advocate of Nigeria to win an election as NBA President in thirty years. However, the elections are now over, and we must, of necessity, retrace our steps.

Advertisements

“One of the cardinal pillars of my campaign and on the basis of which I made myself available to run for this high office, was the promise to run an all-inclusive Bar. There is no gainsaying the fact that this necessarily includes giving due recognition and deference to the senior members of the Bar who are the builders of, and significant contributors to, our noble Association. Even as a candidate, I never saw myself as a harbinger of division between senior and young members of the Bar, but as bridge candidate to build better rapport between young and senior lawyers. This is a role I will approach will all seriousness.

“One of the first things I did after the result declaration was to call on my supporters to desist from joining issues or otherwise attacking other lawyers, especially senior members of the Bar, but instead to be magnanimous in victory. Permit me to repeat what I said in that publication. Ours is a noble profession that prides itself on a high sense of discipline, learning, respect for seniority and character for which its members are reputed. Let us therefore join hands to move the NBA forward. The mandate that I have from Nigerian lawyers is to work for all members of the Bar irrespective of who they voted for. There is so much work to be done to revitalise our Bar and make it work for everyone without discrimination.

“I am also not unaware of very recent events and agitations that have tended to divide our Bar along regional and religious lines.

Now is the time to come together because a divided Bar is a defeated Bar.

Electoral Reform

“It is pertinent to state categorically that, in my view, the 2020 Election – the voting and result of which were monitored live by a significant proportion of Nigerian lawyers and non-lawyers alike – was ultimately free and fair, and the result was, by all estimation, truly reflective of the will of Nigerian lawyers. The above notwithstanding, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that there were several glitches in the build up to the Election. As Nigeria’s foremost professional Association, our electoral process ought to be the standard for others to follow and should, to the extent humanly possible, be devoid of the glitches that we witnessed. It was with this in mind that I personally wrote two separate letters to the ECNBA Chairman on 20th July 2020 and 29th July 2020 to highlight the issues that threatened the conduct of a credible election and to recommend measures to immediately address those concerns.

“The consensus is that there is need to urgently review the 2020 elections and to institute urgent reforms of our electoral systems. Indeed, the Board of Trustees of the NBA in their letter of 19 August 2020 to Deacon Dele Adesina, SAN called for a major transformation of our electoral process and framework. Let me repeat what I said to the Board of Trustees in my letter to them in response to the petition of Deacon Dele Adesina, SAN; “as an Association that prides itself as Nigeria’s foremost and oldest professional membership organisation, we need to manage our electoral processes better. I pledged during the electioneering period to introduce an efficient data management system for the NBA and to follow that up with other institutional and structural reforms that would enable NBA to serve the benefit of its members and the Society. In the wake of the criticisms that trailed the Election, this is now a top priority issue for me.”

“One major complaint about the last election was the issue of the database of lawyers and resultant difficulties in coming up with a credible voters’ register. To address this, my administration will improve upon the membership portal introduced by the President Paul Usoro administration. Additionally, I am immediately constituting an Electoral Audit and Reforms Committee, comprising distinguished practitioners of the highest standards to audit our 2016, 2018 and 2020 elections and recommend reforms for our electoral systems and processes.

VP, Osinbajo advocates 12 to 15 month time limit for court cases.

Advertisements

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has challenged the Nigeria Bar Association to work towards reforming the Nigerian judicial processes to ensure the speedy dispensation of justice in the country.

Professor Osinbajo posed the challenge on Wednesday when he virtually declared open the Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos, where he represented President Muhammadu Buhari.

The vice president wants to see judicial reforms that will fast track all court cases so that the longest will be a maximum of 15 months.

Besides speedy dispensation of court case, Osinbajo noted that multiple and conflicting court orders are making a mockery of the judicial process, while highlighting the need for reforms in that area.

“Reform is urgent because the fabric of our society is stitched together by our system of justice and law enforcement.

Advertisements

“We cannot afford to have the stitches come undone. The first issue I would like to commend to your consideration is the terribly slow pace of trials in our courts.

“My question then is that why can’t we have timeliness on all cases? Why can’t we put in place the rules that will state that a criminal trial all the way to the Supreme Court must not exceed 12 months in duration?

“Why can’t we do the same for civil cases even if we say it that civil cases must not go beyond 15 months – between 12 and 15 months? I think that for me will be stepping forward.

“The question of speed raises a related concern in the context of a competitive global economy, a speed of our legal institutions and processes must match up with the global pace of transactions,” he said.
