Naira Scarcity: Anxiety as Malami tackles el-Rufai, others.

Twenty-four hours to the deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for the swap of the old naira notes, there is a high level of anxiety across the country.

The Supreme Court had on Wednesday temporarily halted the move by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to ban the use of the old naira notes from February 10, 2023.

A 7-member panel led by Justice John Okoro halted the move while ruling in an ex-parte application brought by three northern States of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara.

The three States had specifically applied for an order of Interim Injunction restraining “the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame with which the now older version of the 200, 500 and 1,000 denomination of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice for interlocutory injunction”.

Moving the application on Wednesday, counsel to the applicants, Mr A. I. Mustapha, SAN, had urged the apex court to grant the application in the interest of justice and the well-being of Nigerians.

He stated that the policy of the government has led to an “excruciating situation that is almost leading to anarchy in the land.”

The ruling has since generated mixed reactions from across the country.

While some citizens, including the camp of the APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu are hailing the ruling, others have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to override it with an executive order.

Few hours after the ruling, the Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele met with President Buhari at the Aso Rock Villa.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, has already filed processes challenging the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to suspend the scheduled deadline.

Malami, in a preliminary objection he filed on behalf of the Federal Government, applied for an order striking out the suit that three Northern States filed to halt the full implementation of the new monetary policy that was introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

He is the sole defendant in the suit marked: SC/CV/162/2023, where he applied for its outright dismissal on the basis that the three States lacked the locus-standi.

Listing his grounds for challenging the power of the Supreme Court to intervene in the matter, Malami accused the three States of opposing FG’s power, through its agency, the CBN, to withdraw old banknotes and introduce new ones.

Nigerians are anxiously awaiting the next step of the CBN, especially with the deadline ending on Friday, February 10, just as President Buhari had earlier asked for one week to take a major decision on the matter one way or the other.

Speaking to 𝕹𝖔𝖇𝖑𝖊 𝕽𝖊𝖕𝖔𝖗𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖘’ known Media on Wednesday, the Head of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Digital Media, Barrister Tony Ehilebo claimed of a certain intelligence that the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, is planning to swap N21 billion it had set out for vote-buying.

He, however, said that the efforts of Governor Nasir El-Rufia of Kaduna State and his cohorts to stop the CBN policy will fail because the States lacked such powers.

He alleged that, “The intelligence reaching us is that the APC, especially in States that they control are using the instrumentality of the State government and trying to swap N21 billion.

“We don’t know if this has gone through or if it has happened but we have raised all the necessary alarms.

“These are the questions we should be asking. We expect that the NFIU which has direct access to any suspicious cash transaction should be on top of its job.

“I’m one of the advocates, one of the drafters of the creation of the National Financial Intelligence Unit Bill and I expect it to live up to expectation, which is why I don’t have any problem with the CBN policy.

“It may not even favour the PDP as far as I’m concerned but it is in the best interest of Nigeria. We’ll really like whoever Nigerians want, which I believe is the PDP at this point in time.”

Speaking further on the recent Supreme Court injunction, he added, “It is a normal procedure of the court. When you run to the court with the cry that lives are being affected, it is the Court’s duty to first intervene and then bring all parties to the table and provide opportunity for response.

“That is why injunctions only have a lifespan of seven days at most. However, I suspect that this will be reversed. If you notice, it was given on 7th and it expires on 15th and that is when the hearing proper is.

“If I were the CBN, on the 15th I’ll carry on with that policy. Of course, the CBN is legitimately carrying out its function and I don’t think the States have any say whatsoever to impede on functions that are constitutionally guaranteed by the banks and other financial institutions’ acts.

“The CBN is guaranteed to be independent of the judiciary and free from the encumbrance of people like El-rufai and his cohorts.”

But reacting to the allegations of planning to buy votes and rig the forthcoming election, Comrade Okpokwu Ogenyi, Convener, Concerned APC Members and member APC Presidential Campaign Council and Civil Society Directorate, wondered why the APC whose government introduced the BVAS and signed the Electoral Act 2022 into law, should be the one being accused of planning to rig elections.

Speaking to 𝕹𝖔𝖇𝖑𝖊 𝕽𝖊𝖕𝖔𝖗𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖘’ known Media, he said, “Yes. Some members of my party are in court to challenge the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria and some of the reasons they gave were very clear.

“El-Rufia made it clear that in the entire Borno State, it is only two local governments that banks are operating.

“The same in Yobe State. He said that he was campaigning against the effect of the policy on the people. He even said the policy has nothing to do with the CBN but Mr. President who changed currency even in his first tenure as military head of state.

“That the timing is wrong. In my personal opinion, I want to tell you that Governor El-Rufia is in court to seek redress in his capacity as governor of Kaduna State. He is speaking for the people of Kaduna State not for the entire All Progressives Congress.

“On the allegations of swapping over N21b for vote, let me say that just yesterday, the party launched the Renewed Hope Ambassadors of Nigeria to mobilise 20-man canvassers in each of the polling units.

“A party that is resorting to vote-buying will not initiate such a volume of projects. I want you to also know that my party is not ready to buy votes. The BVAS was introduced by my party.

But the Federal Government in a swift reaction yesterday, said it is not aware of any element working against the ruling party, insisting that President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to ensuring that the forthcoming elections are free, fair and credible and wil not favour any presidential candidate.

But speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, Governor el-Rufai said most of those working against APC’s chances in the presidential election are not even members of the party.

He said they are embittered because their preferred candidate didn’t win the party’s presidential ticket.

The governor said: “Nigerians should stick with the APC because they should see what we have been able to achieve in the last eight years in very difficult circumstances.

’We were sabotaged on subsidy’

“This fuel subsidy requires a national conversation. It is not a partisan thing, it has been going on for years, we tried to solve it under the Buhari administration but we were sabotaged and we are where we are.

“To be honest, we have had the conversation at the level of the National Economic Council, NEC, chaired by the vice president and we all agreed it should go, it was Buhari himself that took the decision that this subsidy will hurt the poor and he won’t do it.

‘We didn’t promise subsidy, Naira re-design’

“There are some things we sit and agreed with the president to get done and it doesn’t get done. And those that refused to get it done don’t get punished.

“If you were at our party, we didn’t promise that we were going to keep fuel subsidy or redesign the currency. It isn’t in our manifesto. You need to separate the personal decisions of some people in the villa from the manifesto of the party. It is important to understand that.

“Most of the people in the villa are not members of our party. I believe there are elements in the villa that want us to lose the election because they didn’t have their way.

“They had their candidates, and their candidates didn’t win the primaries and I think they are still trying to get us to lose the election and they are hiding behind the president’s desire to do what he thinks is right.”

Speaking further on fuel subsidy, Governor el-Rufai said: “The problem is not the APC government but the people of Nigeria who are not willing to face the truth. People are paying N300 to N500 per litre in parts of the country and they have to queue for hours to get fuel because of this unsustainable and broken down subsidy regime that we have chosen to maintain for the past 50 years. It has not worked.

“It is not an APC problem, it is a Nigeria problem because today, if President Buhari said remove subsidy, the NLC will be out on the streets protesting. We have had that anytime the price slightly increases.

‘Next govt must remove subsidy, or else…’

“It is a national conversation. The presidential candidates, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Bola Tinubu have said they will remove fuel subsidy. They have to, unless the country will go bankrupt. The next government must remove it, otherwise the country will collapse.

“This fuel subsidy requires a national conversation. It is not a partisan thing, it has been going on for years, we tried to solve it under the Buhari administration but we were sabotaged and we are where we are.

“To be honest, we have had the conversation at the level of the National Economic Council chaired by the vice president and we all agreed it should go. It was Buhari himself that took the decision that this subsidy will hurt the poor and he won’t do it.

‘’These elements are hiding behind the President’s desire to do what he thinks is right. I will give two examples: this petroleum subsidy, which is costing the country trillions of naira, was something that we all agreed would be removed.

“In fact, I had a discussion with the President and showed him why it had to go, because how can you have a capital budget of N200 billion for federal roads and then spend N2 trillion on petroleum subsidy?

“This was a conversation I had with the President in 2021 when the subsidy thing started rising. He was convinced. We left. It changed. Everyone in the government agreed, and it changed.

‘Don’t blame CBN gov on Naira re-design’

“The second example I will give is this currency redesign. You have to understand the President. People are blaming the governor of the Central Bank for the currency redesign, but No.

‘’You have to go back and look at the first outing of Buhari as military head of state. He did this; the Buhari-Idiagbon regime changed our currency and did it in secrecy, with a view to catching those that are stashing away illicit funds.

“It is a very good intention. The President has his right but doing it at this time within the allotted time does not make any political or economic sense.”

Denies knowledge of presidency official working against APC

Replying the Kaduna governor yesterday, the Federal Government denied knowledge of Presidency officials working against the APC in the forthcoming presidential election, insisting that President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to ensuring that the forthcoming elections in the country are free, fair and credible and will not favour any presidential candidate.

The government also dismissed Transparency International’s, TI, report that placed Nigeria on 150 on the Corruption Perception Index ranking from the previous 154 out of 180 countries.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting on the claims by Governor el-Rufai, maintained that President Buhari, being the main occupant of the presidential villa, had stressed severally that he wanted his administration to deliver a credible exercise.

The Minister said if there are elements within the seat of power working against the victory of the ruling party, it had not been brought officially to his notice.

He said: “On a more serious note, one thing I can assure you is that no matter what, this administration is focused, determined to ensure free and fair elections.

“But I think with this administration, the most important person is Mr President, and I think he has shown by words and deeds that he is committed to a free, fair and credible election. And fair, free, credible elections actually mean not favouring anybody or disadvantaging anybody.

“Everywhere he goes, he makes that very clear, even as recently as last Friday when he was in Daura (Katsina State), he said the same thing. If there’s anybody working against a candidate, we don’t know officially.”

Also responding to the latest ranking of Nigeria dropping from 154 to 150 out of 180 countries by the Transparency International on Corruption Perception Index ranking, the Information Minister said maybe TI was using a template that was oblivious of the war against corruption in the country.

He said: “We are not fighting corruption because we want to impress Transparency International or any organization whatsoever.

“We’re fighting corruption because we believe if we do not fight corruption, there’ll be no growth, either in terms of the economy or even political. Therefore, what we do and what we’re putting in place to fight corruption is not because we want to be rated by anybody.

“If, for instance, what we’re doing catches the attention of Transparency International and they improve and give us better marks, we’ll go. However, I can assure you that we do not know what template TI is using.

“Whatever template they’re using is clearly oblivious of what this administration is doing, to fight corruption.

“Corruption fighting is not just by how many people have you arrested? How many people have you tried? How many people have you convicted? Of course, even in that respect, we have a very impressive record. Is it the EFCC or is it the ICPC?

“You see, if you look at what we’re doing, even to make corrupt practices, almost impossible or difficult.

‘’I’ll just give you two examples. For instance, this administration, when funds were returned from the Abacha loot and other funds were recovered from the USA, the UK and Europe, what this administration did was that rather than pay these funds into the treasury and face the possibility of it being stolen or relooted, the administration decided that we will put this money into a separate account and ask the National Sovereign Investment Fund to manage these funds, and we used the money for specific projects.

“Some of our legacy projects today actually are being financed from our money that have been stolen, which were returned and which we have kept. To me, this is one example of how to fight corruption, an example of how to ensure that people do not steal what has been recovered again.

“I make bold to say that we have been more proactive in fighting corruption and people are not willing to see what we have put in place in fighting corruption. And that’s why I gave that example of putting money aside and how those funds are being used.

“Again, the courage of this administration even to expose high ranking officials of the administration who have run foul of the law, is evidence of our determination and courage to fight corruption.

“So, we are not really worried or bothered about rating of the TI, because we know that everything we do is to ensure that we fight corruption the best way we know how to do.

“Like I said, if TI is not seeing this, then again, I think they have to change their template. But again, we’re not fighting corruption to impress them.”

He added that Nigerians must decide if they’ll either support the removal of subsidy to enable the growth of other sectors of the economy or allow it to continue for the benefit of a few individuals.

Constitution Review: Lawan lobbies with el-Rufai to prevail over his colleagues.

Advertisements

Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan on Monday revealed that he had lobbied the Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai to prevail on his colleagues to encourage their respective state houses of assembly to transmit back to the National Assembly their responses on the bills sent to them on the Constitution amendment.

The National Assembly in March 2022 passed 44 bills to amend some key provisions of the 1999 Constitution and transmitted them to the 36 states for their endorsement or otherwise as part of the constitutional amendment process.

The process requires the endorsement of not less than two-thirds of the 36 state houses of assembly for any of the bills to sail through but far less than half of the 36 states were believed to have so far transmitted their responses back to the National Assembly.

The Senate President spoke against this backdrop while declaring open the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture 2022 which was organised by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies(NILDS).

The lecture was delivered by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Lawan told Governor El-Rufai who chaired the occasion: “We will task you to lobby for us. We have sent (to the states) the outcome of our constitution review and we are yet to receive all from the states.

“So we should be able to wind up this process by getting responses from the state houses of assembly. Even if it is one month left, we have the capacity, working together, to ensure that we pass some of the legislations that are required in a very expeditious manner. Lobby your governor colleagues because I can see that you do that very well.”

Lawan said the lecture was one of the laudable initiatives of NILDS geared towards bridging the gap between the electorates and their elected representatives.

He said: “It is also an avenue for us, the parliament to tell our stories to the wider audience, so as to change the misperception and misinformation in the public domain.

“No doubt, the legislature which is the fulcrum of democracy worldwide has been misunderstood, some for mischievous purposes and at times owing to its underdeveloped stature historically.

“It is in lieu of this that the First Parliamentarians lecture which I delivered last year gave a lucid narration of such misplaced perception of the 9th Assembly under my leadership.

“Today’s 2nd series of the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture attempt a critical assessment of the House of Representatives within the context of its agenda, this is because the importance of the House of Representatives in the annals of Nigeria’s political and legal evolution cannot be overemphasized.

“The House of Representatives is that vigilant younger brother who ensures that its swaggering elder brother, the Senate, stays on course.

“The role of the House of Representatives is even more critical when analysed viz-a-viz the executive branch of government. Since Nigeria’s cherished return to democratic rule in 1999, the House of Representatives, alongside the Senate, has steered the wheels of public policy, public discourse, rulemaking, and checks and balances.

“Tellingly, the 9th National Assembly (including the 9th House of Representatives) has passed some of the most ground-breaking and significant legislations in the history of parliamentarianism in Sub-Sahara Africa.

“To mention but a few, the Companies and Allied Matters Act, which was passed in 2020, has revolutionized Nigeria’s corporate world and fostered the ease-of-doing-business agenda of the federal government of Nigeria.

Peter Obi ‘arrested’ me in 2013 – Nasir El-Rufai

Advertisements

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has how the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi arrested him in Anambra state when Obi was the governor of the state in 2013.

El-Rufai, who made this disclosure at an interactive session of Arewa Joint Committee in Kaduna on Monday, stated that Obi arrested and detained him for 48 hours.

According to El-Rufai, Obi was seeking a second term in office on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at the time.

El-Rufai stated that he (El-Rufai) visited Anambra to monitor the state’s governorship bye-election at the time.

He said, “In 2013, I went to Anambra State as an official of the APC to witness the bye-election for governorship.

“Your next guest, Peter Obi, as governor, got me arrested and detained for 48 hours in my hotel room.

“Now I’m the Governor of Kaduna State and he’s coming to Kaduna. In addition to the police and the State Secret Service, I have one mechanised division of the Nigerian Army here if I need to arrest and detain anyone.

“But we are northerners, we are civilised. We don’t do things like that. I wish you all safe journey back to your destinations,” he said.

El-Rufai said he had all the security architecture at his disposal now that the Labour Party candidate was also coming into his domain.

Meanwhile, Obi, defended his position, saying El-Rufai was being overzealous by accusing him of bigotry, given the circumstances that led to his arrest.

He said, “What His Excellency, Gov. Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai said about me has been brought to my attention. I believe that as we grow older and are saddled with more responsibilities, we are expected to become circumspect in our thinking and avoid recklessness in our speeches and utterances.

“How does the circumstance he referred to related to bigotry to warrant such a label?

“All I do for people like El-Rufai is to pray for them and encourage them to concentrate on doing those things that will better the lots of Nigerians rather than engage in hate speeches that will divide and destroy the country,” he said.

El-Rufai mocks Peter Obi supporters over 2 million march in Kaduna.

Advertisements

Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai on Monday gave a cryptic response to a planned ‘two million man’ march for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the state.

Some supporters of Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, on Twitter have been trending a march to solicit votes for the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

El-Rufai wondered where the two million people to march for Peter Obi in Kaduna State are going to come from.

“In Kaduna? Not Kaduna Twitter?” El-Rufai tweeted in response to a Peter Obi supporter.

“I hope you get Two Hundred persons on the streets, including those ‘imports’ that can’t open their shops on Mondays, and came on overnight bus last night. I jus’ dey laff, wallahi tallahi!”, the Kaduna State governor said.

Many in the comment section claimed that the Labour Party candidate does not have popularity in the northern state to attract such support while others insists that Obi was becoming popular in the region.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to officially declare the commencement of campaigns for the 2023 elections, different groups are already mobilising support for their candidates.

In the presidential election, the major candidates are Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Obi of the Labour Party.

Although pundits favour Tinubu and Atiku as leading contestants to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari based on their political reach and followership of the parties, a frenzy of support for Obi’s candidacy, some said, has made the election to be a three-horse race.

Amid rousing confidence of winning next year’s presidential election from Tinubu and Atiku, Obi said he is sure of defeating the two heavyweights to succeed Buhari.

“Therefore, my decision to join the Labour Party was not by coincidence or happenstance; it was indeed a thought-through decision given the ideological convergence,” Obi said at the Labour Party Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO) Summit at the International Conference Centre, Abuja last Thursday.

“The current structures of both the PDP and the APC are the stomach infrastructure that has brought us nothing but misery.”

2/3-Wheel Cycles Ban: Lift ban, people are suffering – Prof. Ubangeji to El-Rufai.

Advertisements

A former professor of Conflict, Peace and Strategic Studies at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Professor Moses Ubangeji has called on the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai to lift the ban on Motorcycles and the restrictions on tricycles in the state.

He said there has been a rise in cases of banditry, and criminals in the state since the ban on vehicular movement.

The state government had in October 2021, placed a ban on Motorcycles, and restricted tricycle movement to curtail the banditry activities.

However, Professor Ubangeji who is worried over rising cases of kidnapping and the continuous attack on residents of the state, since the ban, noted that the government’s ban on vehicular movement has no effect on bandits and criminals.

Professor Ubangeji while speaking to Noble Reporters’ known Media in Kaduna on Thursday, said that bandits have their strategies for attacking the victims, adding that the only way to reduce crime in the state, is through peace talk, as there seem to be lapses in discharging responsibility by security forces.

He further added that several people are going through silent pains, since the ban, especially those in remote villages.

“Most people in remote villages who need medical attention at the night cannot find motorcycles or tricycles to convey them, because there is a ban on their movement.

“Several innocent people in the state have died, especially those who fall sick at night, and the parents have no car. ” He said

According to him, even those who depend on these vehicles for survival, have been in pain and hunger

Kaduna central senatorial zone recorded the highest casualties with 214 deaths, the Commissioner said.

The State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said in a statement that the ban, which is with immediate effect, was done in consultation with the State Security Council.

Kaduna attack: Buhari told to remove El-Rufai.

Advertisements

President Muhammadu Buhari has been told to remove Governor Nasir el-Rufai as the Governor of Kaduna State and declare a state of emergency in the State without further delay.

A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and socio-political activist, Reno Omokri, gave the advice, insisting that Buhari would destroy the South-East without thinking twice had the train bombing by terrorists happened in the region.

The former presidential aide wondered how many people were killed by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, before the current administration sent troops to the South-East and allegedly caused untold damage.

He, however, doubted Buhari’s ability to declare a military rule in Kaduna State because, according to him, the terrorists may expose the President and El-Rufai.

Kaduna State has been under siege by terrorists who have moved from kidnapping and killing students, attacking military bases and taking over rural villages in the State to attacking airports, train stations and government places.

Advertisements

The daredevil terrorists recently bombed the Abuja-Kaduna bound train between Katari and Rigina axis, killed passengers and kidnapped as many as they wanted.

He wrote: “You think that if a train was bombed in South-East Nigeria, Buhari would not have overwhelmed the region with troops?

“Remember how troops overwhelmed Orlu in Imo last year with helicopter gunships? Why hasn’t Buhari sent them to Kaduna? Because he is protecting terrorists.

“How many people did IPOB kill before General Buhari invaded the Southeast with Operation Python Dance?

“Who was killed before Buhari sent Operation Crocodile Smile to the Southsouth? Now, terrorists have turned Kaduna to a war zone and Buhari is smiling at Aso Rock!”

“Kaduna is a war zone. The best thing now is to declare a state of emergency and remove the Governor, @elrufai, whose comments and actions have fuelled the crisis. But of course, General Buhari won’t do it. Why? Because the terrorists may expose him and El-Rufai,” he claimed.

Arewa youths back El-Rufai on foreign mercenaries.

Advertisements

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, has backed Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on his decision to involve mercenaries to tackle bandits in the State.

AYCF National President, Yerima Shettima, said El-Rufai should involve foreign mercenaries if such a measure would protect residents of Kaduna.

El-Rufai had vowed to bring in foreign mercenaries if the Federal Government fails to tackle terrorism and general insecurity in the State.

However, Shettima, who spoke to Noble Reporters’ known Media, said if El-Rufai’s stance would bring about the needed result, he should go ahead.

He said: “I’m in total support of that because it’s the duty of El-Rufai to protect the citizens of Kaduna going by the constitution.

“So, if he feels he can no longer trust our security forces as a result of their compromises in one way or the other, then there is no reason not to bring in the mercenaries.

“And on this, I totally support and agree with him. All we want now is the result. Let’s bring this madness to a standstill once and for all.

“It’s no story that we have all the Military Forces’ base in Kaduna, apart from Abuja, but that notwithstanding, this is not the time to go through all these bottlenecks. We need a radical change and approach to keep Kaduna safe. With all their presence, what good is it to Nigerians and Kaduna today?

“So, if that is the only way he thinks, then let him do it; we can’t continue with this humiliation.”

ABU denies selling 80 hectares campus land – says Kaduna gov’t lied.

Advertisements

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has denied selling 80 hectares of land belonging to the Department of Agricultural and Animal Science (DAAS), Mando, to private individuals, while accusing the Kaduna State government of propagating falsehood.

A few days ago, lecturers and other workers of the university had embarked on protest in Kaduna during which they accused Governor Nasir el-Rufai of confiscating the Mando campus land.

In a statement, yesterday, ABU Director of Public Affairs, Auwalu Umar, noted: “The attention of ABU has been drawn to a statement credited to the Director-General of Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KASUPDA), Isma’il Umaru-Dikko, in which he accused the institution of selling about 80 hectares of land belonging to its College of Agriculture and Animal Science at Mando, in Kaduna metropolis, to individuals.

“This is to categorically state that the allegation is totally false and unfounded. To simply put the record straight, ABU has never sold its land to anybody, be it individual or corporate organisation; and it will never do so.”

Advertisements

According to him, the college has the Ownership Certificate (G.ITEM-No.1060) of the entire land on which it was established, in addition to the Survey Site Plan that shows the entire college boundaries.

He added: “The university authorities fenced the entire college many years ago to prevent land grabbers from encroaching on it. However, recently, KASUPDA, purportedly acting on the directives of the Kaduna government, illegally trespassed, and recklessly and irresponsibly demolished the perimeter fence that demarcates its boundaries, despite the subsisting court order stopping the government agency from such illegal action.

“The KASUPDA DG was economical with the truth when he acused the institution of selling its own land to individuals. He failed the simple test of carrying out a proper investigation to avoid embarrassing himself and the state government.”

Umar described the accusation as a desperate face-saving measure by Umaru-Dikko, having come to terms with the consequences of his action and the crime he committed against the university.

“For the avoidance of doubt, KASUPDA should know that no amount of blackmail will make ABU to allow its own land to be illegally grabbed for allocation to associates and other unpatriotic individuals,” he added.

International Women’s Day: El-Rufai Advocates Gender Equality.

As Nigeria marks the International Women’s day, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has stressed the need for the inclusion of more women in politics and governance, noting that no society can advance progressively without women inclusion in policy making and implementation.

El-Rufai spoke on Tuesday during the flag off of the third Kaduna State Women Empowerment Fund as part of the commemoration of the International Women’s Day with the theme: “Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”

Responding to why the national Assembly rejected the affirmative action provision in the constitutional amendment, El-Rufai said his administration did not wait for any constitutional amendment before it empowered lots of women in Kaduna State.

“Women are the root of humanity. If Adam was created alone, there would be no humanity, he will be alone. Humanity only began to grow when Eve was created,” he said.

“It is women that ensure the continuity of the society by imbibing the right values at the family level. When they are empowered, they look after their families. They ensure their children are educated and the nutritional quality of the family improves.

“So there is every reason to support women and we are doing it in Kaduna State. We have not regretted it and our successes are clear.”

He explained that his administration since inception in 2015, has accorded women their rightful place in governance by appointing majority of them into top government positions including choosing a woman as his deputy and also appointing many others as commissioners and chief executives of government agencies and parastatals.
