Liverpool breaks silence on Liverpool’s loss to Brighton.

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, has revealed that he was responsible for his side’s Premier League 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday evening.

Klopp also admitted Liverpool are at a “really low point,” saying it was his job to make the right line-up to set up the right tactics against Brighton.

The German watched as a brace from Solly March and a goal from Danny Welbeck gave Brighton all three points against Liverpool at Falmer Stadium.

Speaking at his post-match press conference after the game, Klopp said that the outcome of the match was ‘horrible to watch.’

Klopp said, “I’m not sure if it’s because the game is still a few minutes ago, but I can’t remember a worse game. I honestly can’t. Not only Liverpool.

“That’s my responsibility. That makes it a really low point.”

He added, “It’s fully my responsibility with a different formation and it didn’t work out. The outcome was horrible to watch.”

Klopp discusses Liverpool’s interest in Jude Bellingham.

Advertisements

Jurgen Klopp has confessed that Liverpool would have to be ‘stupid’ not to be interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

The Reds are on the hunt for midfield reinforcements this summer and are looking to lure Bellingham back to England, although they will have to fend off interest from both Manchester City and Real Madrid to do so.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Klopp did not shy away from admitting Liverpool’s interest in Bellingham but did his best to avoid giving too many details away.

“Jude is a great player who we obviously know,” he said. “We would be stupid if we didn’t have him on the screen. But there is nothing more to say about it at the moment.”

Asked whether there was any truth to the reports that Liverpool had already met with Bellingham’s family to discuss a move, Klopp insisted: “These things don’t work at all because he’s under contract with Borussia Dortmund and that doesn’t work without consent. So it’s not true.”

Dortmund have ruled out offloading Bellingham in January and 𝕹𝖔𝖇𝖑𝖊 𝕽𝖊𝖕𝖔𝖗𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖘 𝕸𝖊𝖉𝖎𝖆 understands the German side have made an offer to the midfielder to try and keep him beyond the summer, urging him to delay his expensive transfer like former teammate Erling Haaland, who is now shining with Man City.

That being said, all three of Liverpool, City and Real believe they have made a compelling case to Bellingham and it is now up to the 19-year-old, whose contract runs until 2025, to make the final decision on his future.

Recently, Klopp confessed that he had no idea how much Bellingham would cost, admitting the teenager is a truly special talent.

“I don’t like to talk about money when you talk about a player like him. Everyone can see he is just exceptional,” said the Liverpool manager.

“If you mention to someone who has no clue about football, or who knows about football and has not watched it for a while, ‘How old do you think Jude Bellingham is?’, I don’t think anyone would get even close to his age. “They would say 28 or 29 because he plays so mature. He played an exceptional World Cup. Absolutely exceptional.

“With all the things he has and things he can improve, to describe him I would say the things he can do are difficult to learn, and the things he can improve are easy to learn.

“So, yes, he is a really good player. What can I say? I have thought that already for two or three years since he had his breakthrough at Dortmund. Everybody knew already but I have no idea what that means for the money side of it.

“I really think if we all want to do him a favour then we do not talk too much about money. I mean that from an England point of view. Do not throw any hurdles in his development.”

Jurgen Klopp on ‘important’ first Anfield goal for Darwin Nunez.

Advertisements

Jurgen Klopp has hailed Darwin Nunez’s first goal for Liverpool at Anfield following the 1-0 win over West Ham in the Premier League.

In a tightly-contest affair – one in which West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen missed a penalty kick – Nunez’s first half header proved to be the difference for the Reds. After a shaky start to the season, Liverpool have now managed to beat two of the better teams in the league (Man City and West Ham) in the space of five days.

Key to that turnaround has been the improved performances of marquee signing Nunez, who has three goals in his last three starts for his new club.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Klopp addressed Nunez’s first home goal for the club, stating: “It is important. He has scored now a couple of times in the last few games. He arrived 100 per cent, now even with numbers, which is fine.”

Nunez was taken off with an apparent injury in the 57th minute of the game, but Klopp has assured fans that is nothing to worry about: “He felt a little bit the muscles at half-time but it was all fine and after five minutes [of the second half] I was just a bit concerned about long sprints for him and balls where he stretches his legs.

“I thought, ‘Come on, we cannot take that risk’ and that’s why we changed. I think we caught it at the right moment.”

Liverpool’s flop: Klopp not worried about his sack.

Advertisements

Jurgen Klopp has insisted he is not worried about his job security despite Liverpool’s struggles so far this season.

The Reds have won just two of their first seven games this campaign, and their underlying issues were deeply exposed in Wednesday’s 4-1 hammering at Napoli in the Champions League.

After their own difficult beginning to the new term, Chelsea shockingly parted ways with Thomas Tuchel and are set to bring in Graham Potter as his replacement. But Klopp is not concerned that Liverpool will similarly replace him.

When asked if he’s worried about getting the sack, Klopp replied: “Not really. Our owners are rather calm and expect me to sort the situation and not think someone else will.”

Klopp is now into his seventh season at Anfield and has never lasted longer than that time frame at any club before.

He lasted seven years in his first managerial job at Mainz, being relegated from the Bundesliga in his penultimate campaign and failing to win promotion in his final year.

The German was also at Borussia Dortmund for seven years, and while he won two Bundesliga titles and reached the Champion League final in that time, BVB strangely imploded in his final season, spending several weeks bottom of the table before eventually finishing seventh

Napoli defeat “set somethings straight” — Liverpool needs reinvention – Klopp.

Advertisements

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gave a damning assessment of his team’s heavy 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night, admitting the Reds need to ‘reinvent’ themselves and improve in ‘pretty much everything’.

It was an incredibly lacklustre performance from Liverpool as a team.

Joe Gomez was so poor in the first half that he was withdrawn at the interval, while Trent Alexander-Arnold barely seemed interested. Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk were also unusually poor, while Klopp even lost patience with Mohamed Salah an hour into the contest.

Advertisements

“It looks like we need to reinvent ourselves. There’s a lot of things lacking. We have to try to find a set up to be much better in pretty much everything,” Klopp conceded in post-match media duties.

“Not that difficult to explain when you saw the game. Napoli played a really good game and we didn’t. That’s the first explanation. Not compact defensively or offensively. Until Thiago entered the pitch I can’t remember one counter-pressing situation. We were just too wide.”

Looking ahead to the weekend, Klopp also said, “In three days, we play Wolves. When they saw the game, they cannot stop laughing probably. They were probably thinking that’s the perfect moment [to play Liverpool]. I would say it’s the perfect moment.”

After a mixed bag of results in pre-season, the defeat to Napoli means that Liverpool have failed to win in five of their eight games so far in 2022/23 across all competitions – including victory in the Community Shield against Manchester City at the end of July

These boys are ‘like having Ferraris in the garage’ – Klopp admits.

Advertisements

Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on the fringe players in his Liverpool squad after they led the Reds to a 2-1 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

With a Champions League final around the corner and Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho already nursing injuries, Klopp was in no mood to risk his other stars and made nine changes to his lineup for the trip to St Mary’s.

It threatened to backfire after Nathan Redmond’s early opener but Liverpool were on top throughout and goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip steered the team to a 2-1 victory which takes the Premier League title race to the final day of the season.

“I’m so happy with the performance, it’s quite touching. It’s like, wow! These boys!” Klopp said after the game. “It’s like having Ferraris in the garage.”

He added: “I never had a group like this. Because we win most of the time, there is not a lot of things you can really argue about [for team selection].

“But there are two opportunities how you can deal with it – you give up or you just play your role in this group, and this group pushes each other constantly.

“In the end, it is absolutely outstanding and tonight is really special because we came here and did what we did, and it worked out because of the boys.

Klopp admits Liverpool winning EPL title, unlikely.

Advertisements

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has conceded that beating Manchester City to the Premier League on the final day of the season ‘unlikely’ following victory over Southampton on Tuesday.

Having closed the gap on leaders City to just one point with the comeback win at St Mary’s, the Reds ensured the title race remains alive for the last round of fixtures.

But to leapfrog City, Klopp’s side must beat Wolves and hope that Pep Guardiola’s team fail to take maximum points at home against Aston Villa.

“Of course, [winning the Premier League title] is unlikely because City play at home against Aston Villa, who play only on Thursday [against Burnley],” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“But it is football. I think the time when City became champion [in 2019] it was because of 11 millimetres. If someone wants us to be champion then we have to win first and Aston Villa need to get a point at City. It is possible, not likely but possible. That is enough.”

It also means that Liverpool’s chances of an unprecedented quadruple are now slim. The Reds have already lifted the League Cup and the FA Cup, as well having the Champions League final against Real Madrid still to play in a rematch of the 2018 showdown.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle at St Mary’s, captain Jordan Henderson reflected, “The aim was to take [the title race] to the end. We knew it would be difficult. A lot of changes. The lads were brilliant. They kept going right to the end and got the reward.

“We’ve done that really well all season, the lads who haven’t played as much as they’d like took their opportunity. You need everyone in a Premier League season. We’re so used to it. We’re constantly in ‘cup finals’ every game. It’s normal. You get on with it.

“We can all celebrate or relax at the end of the season after the Champions League final.”

Jurgen Klopp still believe in Liverpool’s chances to win titles.

Advertisements

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he maintains belief that the Reds can beat Manchester City to the Premier League title and keep their hopes of a historic quadruple alive.

City extended their lead at the top of the table to three points and also boosted their goal difference to four better than Liverpool’s with a 5-0 thrashing of Newcastle on Sunday.

The Reds stumbled a day earlier when they were held 1-1 at home by Tottenham.

However, Klopp shrugged off suggestions that he should now focus on saving his players’ energies for facing Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday and the Champions League final against Real Madrid on May 28.

“Until it’s not reachable anymore, why should we stop believing? That’s what we do,” said Klopp at his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Aston Villa.

“It is clear that it is not over, whatever happened, because we both have three games to play. And my concern is actually: how can we win our games?

“In an ideal world you win all the games and you are always in a great mood. A lot of times we have to respond on setbacks and that’s what we have to do.”

City boss Pep Guardiola claimed he felt the whole of England is behind Liverpool’s title bid.

Speaking shortly after the win over Newcastle, Guardiola said: “Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone.”

However, Klopp said he does not get that feeling with the hostile environment his side face on the road.

“I have no idea if the whole country is supporting us,” added Klopp. “It is not the feeling I get when we go to other places and play there, it is actually the opposite, but maybe he knows more about that than me.”

Liverpool are sure to have a fan in the manager of their next opposition.

Steven Gerrard never lifted a league title as captain at Anfield, but is revered as one of the club’s greatest ever players and been tipped as a potential successor to Klopp.

Villa secured safety with a 3-1 win at Burnley at the weekend, but Gerrard said he has no divided loyalties when facing his old club.

“My job is to win games for Aston Villa, that will always be the case when I’m representing the club. I want to win, fiercely, and that is no different tomorrow,” said Gerrard.

Liverpool were thrashed 7-2 on their last visit to Villa Park in October 2020.

But Gerrard believes he is coming up against the best team in world football right now.

“Liverpool are a world-class team. Arguably, the best team in the world right now,” he added.

“We’re well aware of the size of the challenge, but it’s exciting and I’m looking forward to it. Big games of football are what it’s all about.”

Liverpool’s league title chase “uncertain” after draw with Tottenham.

Advertisements

Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes suffered a huge blow even though they went top of the table as Tottenham clung on for a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds edged ahead of Manchester City on goal difference, but the English champions can now afford to draw one of their remaining four games and still retain their title.

Pep Guardiola’s men can retake top spot and open up a three-point lead when they host Newcastle on Sunday.

A share of the spoils took Tottenham to within a point of fourth-placed Arsenal, but their chance of a top-four finish now also rely on the Gunners dropping points in two of their final four games.

Son Heung-min rounded off a brilliant team move to put Spurs in front on 56 minutes.

Luis Diaz’s deflected shot levelled 16 minutes from time, but Jurgen Klopp’s men failed to find a winner.

Twenty-one points separate the sides, but Spurs have made a habit of saving their best for the big occasion.

Antonio Conte’s men are unbeaten in all four meetings with City and Liverpool this season.

Liverpool did not start like a side fatigued by reaching the Champions League final in their 57th game of the season against Villarreal in midweek, as the intense press from the home side penned Tottenham in.

However, the visitors were first to seriously threaten when Alisson Becker had to be sharp off his line to prevent Harry Kane’s cross reaching Son and Rodrigo Bentancur fired the follow-up far too close to the Brazilian stopper.

Liverpool’s best efforts before the break came from set-pieces as Virgil van Dijk hit the crossbar, while Diaz also tested Hugo Lloris after being teed up by Sadio Mane.

Spurs also hit the woodwork in the first-half when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg took aim from long range.

The second-half followed the same pattern, with Liverpool camped in the Tottenham half, but this time Spurs did pick them off on the counter-attack.

Advertisements

Kane was given time to assess his options and picked out Ryan Sessegnon who slid the ball across the box for Son to tap in his 20th Premier League goal of the season to move within two of Mohamed Salah.

It was the first time Liverpool have trailed at Anfield in a league match since February and Spurs could have doubled their lead had Son controlled another Sessegnon cross moments later.

Salah did his best to extend his advantage in the race for the Golden Boot and rescue the Reds’ title challenge only to be denied by a brilliant block from Ben Davies.

Diaz swung the match and the tie in midweek as Klopp’s men came from 2-0 down on the night to win 3-2 against Villarreal and reach a third Champions League final in five seasons.

The Colombian has been a sensational signing since arriving in January and made another contribution with a slice of fortune.

Diaz’s shot from outside the box took a huge deflection off Bentancur to wrong-foot Lloris.

But Liverpool will have to settle for a shot at cup glory unless City stumble as Tottenham held firm in the closing stages.

Klopp’s men, who have already lifted the League Cup, face Chelsea in the FA Cup final next weekend and then Real Madrid for the European Cup in Paris on May 28.

Klopp warns Liverpool against Tottenham’s top strikers.

Advertisements

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool that Tottenham forwards Harry Kane and Son Heung-min will pose a “massive” challenge for his quadruple-chasing team.

Klopp’s side, one point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City with four games left, can go top of the table if they beat Tottenham at Anfield on Saturday, with City facing Newcastle 24 hours later.

But fifth-placed Spurs are battling to finish in the top four and Reds boss Klopp is concerned about the potential damage that Kane and Son — with 43 goals between them in all competitions this season — could do.

“Tottenham have massive quality,” he said Friday. “Especially away from home, they are not too bothered about having the ball all the time, stuff like this. They defend compact and then obviously they have some of the best counter-attacking players in the world.

“Up front they have speed like crazy — Harry Kane, what a player, and obviously fits in that idea extremely well. There’s a blind understanding between them (Kane and Son) so I’d say it’s probably the biggest challenge for protection we face for a long time.”

Liverpool are on a high after sealing their place in the Champions League final against Real Madrid by beating Villarreal this week.

In contrast, City were left reeling by Real’s astonishing escape act in the other semi-final, eventually losing 6-5 on aggregate.

But Klopp is wary about writing off City too soon, expecting them to respond this weekend.

“City are good,” he said. “It was a massive blow for them, that was really harsh. I’ve had nights like that. It’s not cool, the next morning, not cool, but then there’s a moment you have to focus. They will be ready for Newcastle on Sunday.”

With the League Cup already in the trophy cabinet and an FA Cup final to come against Chelsea next weekend, Liverpool are in contention to become the first club to win all four major trophies in a single season.

Yet Klopp does not believe Liverpool will be favourites when they face 13-time European champions Real on May 28 in a repeat of the 2018 final won by the Spaniards.

“They are now the massive favourites with all the experience they have and all these kind of things,” said Klopp. “We are more experienced than we were, probably, but it’s obviously not to compare.

“They got through against PSG (Paris Saint-Germain), Chelsea and City. If you knock out these three guys, then you definitely deserve to be in the final.”

Jurgen Klopp ‘not sure’ if his contract would persuade Salah to stay.

Advertisements

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he does not believe his new deal will be the deciding factor in whether star forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane commit their long-term futures to the club.

Salah and Mane, along with fellow attacker Roberto Firmino and midfielder Naby Keita, have contracts that expire next year.

With Klopp now staying until 2026, there is a greater degree of security at the club, but the German is not convinced that will make a huge difference to individual players’ decisions.

“If it is a positive sign for the boys, great, but I don’t think this will be the one decisive thing for whatever decision they want to make,” he said on Friday.

“It is their own life but we just wanted to guarantee that everyone who wants to be here knows what he can expect.”

Egypt international Salah, whose negotiations have dragged on for several months, admitted last week it was not certain he would remain at Anfield, stressing the decision was not just about the money.

But Klopp said he did not make judgements about players’ loyalty based on whether they wanted to go elsewhere.

“If a player tells you early enough he wants to go then you have to deal with it,” Klopp said.

“I don’t judge people if they are loyal or not if they say during a contract ‘I want to go somewhere else and see what the weather is like or how the grass is there’.

“That’s not the case. I think you see loyalty in other areas.”

Salah was named the Football Writers’ Association player of the year on Friday.

Klopp takes his side to Newcastle for the early kick-off on Saturday, looking to put pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City, who are playing later at Leeds, by opening up a two-point gap at the top.

With one foot in the Champions League final after a 2-0 win over Villarreal in the first leg of their semi-final and an FA Cup final against Chelsea next month, an unprecedented quadruple remains a possibility.

Klopp, whose side have already won the League Cup this season, said his new contract was the start of a new era at the club.

“We don’t think about changing the team in the next two or three years or whatever, but you have to prepare the little things so that you are ready for the future as well,” he said.

“That’s why I really think it’s a really good place to be or a good place to join, if not the perfect place.

“We cannot wait 10 years. We have to do it now. It’s no threat. This is only the start, to be honest. That’s the plan, that we really, really go for it.”

Liverpool denied request to change Newcastle kick-off time.

Advertisements

Liverpool have been denied a request to push back the kick-off time of their Premier League clash with Newcastle on 30 April, which is only three days after the Reds will have faced Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Kick-off against Newcastle is scheduled for 12.30pm on the Saturday, having been selected for live television broadcast by BT Sport. But that is only around 62 hours after the Villarreal game on the preceding Wednesday will finish.

Fortunately for Liverpool, the first leg is at home and not in Spain, which would have required additional travel in the already short turnaround between games.

The club had asked to move the kick-off time to 7.45pm on the same day, meaning even just a few extra hours of rest and recovery. But that is said to have been rejected.

It was revealed last May that BT Sport would no longer schedule 12.30pm kick-offs for a club that playing in the Champions League during the midweek beforehand, instead swapping any such live broadcasts for an evening 7.45pm start time. However, that change will only be implemented from the 2022/23 season onwards when the newest broadcasting contract begins.

Even though that is a positive change in terms of player recovery to the often controversial TV scheduling, that hasn’t helped Liverpool this time around.

Earlier this month, manager Jurgen Klopp spoke extremely critically on the problem of scheduling.

“Because of the success we had , we play on Saturday against City [in the FA Cup]. Then we play [Manchester] United, then Everton [in the Premier League]. Then, we have a semi-final and then BT and the Premier League thought we should have Newcastle away at 12.30,” he said.

“The schedule, and how people use the fame in the moment – Liverpool is hot and everyone wants to see them – the TV stations couldn’t care less. It’s just not okay.

“If we play a Champions League semi-final, find me another league in the world and another broadcaster who would put the one team in the semi-finals on at 12.30. What?

“What are you doing? Why would you do that? That’s why it’s so difficult, that’s why [a quadruple] never happens, because nobody cares. It’s unbelievably difficult.”

Liverpool cruises to Champions League semifinal, City squeezes in.

Advertisements

Liverpool and Manchester City will resume their domestic duel in the FA Cup on Saturday after the pair reached the semifinal of the Champions League in contrasting styles on Wednesday.

Jürgen Klopp’s Reds proved too strong for Benfica despite being held to a 3-3 draw at Anfield a week after winning 3-1 in Lisbon. They meet Villarreal, conquerors of Bayern Munich, in the last four ties that begin at the month’s end.

City, meanwhile, endured a nervous night at Atletico Madrid as they secured a goalless draw in their quarterfinal second leg, which gave them progress 1-0 on aggregate.

Pep Guardiola’s Premier League leaders now face a mouth-watering clash against record winners Real Madrid but will first focus on Wembley where they meet Liverpool, a point behind them domestically, in the FA Cup semifinal.

The teams also drew 2-2 in Manchester last weekend and Klopp took the chance to rotate heavily given the heavy schedule facing his players.

Star forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were rested along with defender Virgil Van Dijk but Liverpool always had an element of control.

Ibrahima Konate, who opened the scoring in Portugal, repeated the trick by heading in Konstantinos Tsimikas’ 21st-minute corner only for Gonçalo Ramos to level from a break of the ball soon after.

But farcial defending ended Benfica’s hopes when keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos spilled the ball and Roberto Firmino tapped in a cross from Diogo Jota 10 minutes after the restart.

Firmino then volleyed his second in the 65th from an excellent Tsimikas free-kick but Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Núñez drew Benfica level. Only a brilliant save from Alisson stopped Núñez immediately cutting the deficit to one with seven minutes remaining but Liverpool settled and saw out the tie.

Atletico started strongly in Madrid in the reverse of their defensive display in Manchester but the only first-half chance fell to City’s Ilkay Gündoğan, who stroked a shot off the post.

City was pinned back in the second period but Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul fired just off target. Defender Felipe was sent off in an injury-time brawl but there was one more chance which Ángel Correa struck straight at City keeper Ederson which ended Atletico’s hopes of a semifinal derby with Madrid rivals Real, who eliminated holders Chelsea in the last eight.

Guardiola looking forward to ‘Hall of Fame dinner’ with Jurgen Klopp.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp for helping him become a better manager.

There was nothing to separate the two teams when they faced off on Sunday, with the 2-2 draw leaving Guardiola’s side one point ahead in the Premier League title race with seven games to go.

The build-up to the game was dominated by Guardiola and Klopp throwing praise at one-another, and with the match now over, the City boss has admitted that he relishes constantly having to improve to keep up with Klopp.

“I don’t know if Jurgen respect me but I respect him a lot,” said Guardiola. “He makes me a better manager… his teams are positive, aggressive and they want to attack. I try to imitate him.

“We aren’t friends, we don’t have dinner together, we will have dinner one day in the hall of fame, I have his telephone number but I don’t call him. I have a lot of respect for him and he knows next Saturday, we’ll try to beat him.”

On top of competing for the league title, the two sides will also butt heads in the FA Cup semi-final next weekend, with City eyeing a treble and Liverpool pushing for the quadruple after their Carabao Cup triumph earlier in the season.

When asked about his side’s run-in, Guardiola added: “Seven games in the Premier League is a lot of points, we have to play away, they have to but I had a feeling we’ll behave. I don’t know what’s going to happen. The way we performed against a team that I admire a lot, that made me think a lot, offensively, defensively, make me think for so many years perform the way they perform.

“I want to win the Premier League but it doesn’t matter. We’re so good and I think all our fans enjoyed it.

“It is what it is [the draw]. You are the pundit, you have to analyse, to write and tell, it’s what is. In Anfield we played an incredible half and when we equalised, it was the same result.

“I had the feeling we’ll miss the opportunity to get four points but I said to you, it doesn’t happen. Win, lose, draw – it’s not over. I’d say the same with a win, it’s not over because I told you we’d take an advantage. We know what we have to do, go to Madrid, FA Cup then we finish. The Premier League is as big as possible.”

Man City could regret breathless draw with Liverpool – Report.

Advertisements

Manchester City’s breathless draw with Liverpool on Sunday afternoon almost encapsulated their season as a whole; they were comfortably the better side for lengthy periods, but they failed to make their dominance pay and their rivals closed the gap.

Whether this 2-2 draw comes back to bite them at the end of the season remains to be seen, but if they are to surrender what had been a comfortable lead at the top of the Premier League, then they will look back on this fixture as a missed opportunity.

While this had been touted as a potential title decider had either side been able to pick up the three points, Pep Guardiola’s men were utterly dominant in the first half – demonstrating just how and why they had moved out in front as title favourites in the first place.

At times City looked capable of routing Liverpool and making a mockery of the ‘title-decider’ billing with the extraordinary level of their passing, movement and intensity. Their season has generally been about efficiently seeing off opponents with minimum fuss and minimal thrills, but on Sunday they seemed hell-bent on obliterating the competition. In truth, the game could and should have been over before half-time.

Having taken the lead inside five minutes through Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected strike, the hosts exploited the Reds’ ill-advised high line time and time again, but only once did their relentless attacking yield a goal as either the final pass or the finish went astray.

After Liverpool had equalised, John Stones was unable to get onto the end of Rodri’s excellent header across goal, and both De Bruyne and Joao Cancelo dragged efforts wide when they might have done better.

Gabriel Jesus’ wonderful finish to restore the lead should have opened the floodgates, but City would be punished for only taking a one-goal lead into half-time despite their dominance.

Sadio Mane equalised seconds into the second period, and the momentum swung. Suddenly Liverpool had a foothold and were able to stretch to the level of their hosts for the first time.

However, while the Reds were much improved, City still had the better of the chances. Jesus spurned a golden opportunity for his brace after coming inside from the byline and beating Alisson, but his low drive was fired straight at the recovering Virgil van Dijk.

Raheem Sterling thought he had restored the lead, but he mistimed his run and that strike was chalked off for offside. That is how fine the margins are in this title race.

Substitute Riyad Mahrez – who has been so deadly in front of goal this season – was the guilty party in the dying embers as City failed to put the game and the Premier League title beyond their visitors.

Having cannoned a 30-yard free kick off the outside of the post, Mahrez was found by the brilliant De Bruyne in the final minute of added time and looked for all the world like he would run through and find the back of the net.

However, his recent confidence in front of goal eluded him as he checked back and bizarrely opted to attempt to lift the ball over Alisson and a swarm of recovering defenders. It would have been a near-impossible finish, and perhaps inevitably the ball sailed over the crossbar to essentially bring an end to proceedings.

A draw means City maintain their slender one-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, but in truth this was a missed opportunity to flex their authority as champions and see of their plucky challengers.

As it is, this is a result that could provide fuel for their rivals as the title race goes down to the wire.

Liverpool ‘can’t give an inch’ in title race: Klopp.

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool cannot afford to give Manchester City any space in the Premier League title race.

The Reds briefly leapfrogged their rivals at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory over Watford on Saturday lunchtime, but City responded with a 2-0 win of their own to reclaim top spot.

The two wins set up an enticing clash between the pair at the Etihad next weekend, with a victory for either side giving the winner the initiative in the title race.

Liverpool won the title in 2019/20 and could reclaim it this season, though Klopp reiterated his team remain focused on each game as it comes.

He said: “You can’t give an inch. To keep in the title race we have to win our football games, otherwise it will be really tricky. The next Premier League game is a big one [against City next Sunday], we can’t hide from that, but before then we have an important Champions League game to prepare for at Benfica.

“I really appreciate the situation we are in. I said to the boys yesterday that if someone had told us in the summer that in early April we would be in this situation – won one trophy, in three competitions, full squad available – we should all take it.

“The only better situation would be to be 20 points ahead of City but that’s not possible. That’s why it is all fine like it is. I don’t think we are favourites in one of the competitions we are in but who cares, we will give it a try.

“It’s not about managing the situation or the pressure. People see the situation like pressure – I’m not sure I can change that. We create a basis which we can use but no one knows because opponents have their own targets and go for it. People thought Watford would be an easy game but we saw what happened. We cannot see situations like that.”

Next up for Liverpool is the first leg of their Champions League quarter final with Benfica on Tuesday before that exciting trip to the Etihad on Sunday.

160th EPL win: Klopp makes it possible for Liverpool.

Advertisements

Jurgen Klopp won his 160th Premier League match as Liverpool bested Watford 2-0 on Saturday.

In what was the German’s 250th league game in charge of the Reds, goals from Diogo Jota and Fabinho gave them a routine victory.

No Liverpool manager has ever won that many matches in their first 250 games for the club, with Kenny Dalglish’s return of 150 in 250 comfortably surpassed by Klopp earlier this season.

The result also sees Klopp reach the landmark in quicker time than plenty of his contemporaries. Jose Mourinho (158), Sir Alex Ferguson (152) and Arsene Wenger all recorded fewer victories in their first 250 games in charge.

The 2-0 win was Liverpool’s tenth consecutive Premier League victory, becoming just the second side in the competition to enjoy such a run five separate times alongside Manchester City.

Liverpool now sit at the top of the Premier League, though Manchester City may well reclaim that spot in their match against Burnley on Saturday

Liverpool ask for FA Cup semi-final against Man City to be moved from Wembley.

Advertisements

Liverpool have asked the FA to relocate their upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City because of transport concerns.

Engineering work on the railway means there will be no direct trains to London from either Manchester or Liverpool between April 15 and 18, meaning fans from the north west will face a real challenge to get to Wembley.

Both teams’ fan groups have called on the FA to move the game, but on Tuesday, the stance was that the game would not be relocated.

As noted by the Liverpool Echo, those in charge at Anfield have been discussing the issue with both the FA and City officials after they booked their place in the semi-final to try and find a resolution for supporters.

Liverpool have requested that the game be played at a neutral venue closer to the two teams, but the FA continue to refuse.

While many have accused the FA of being too focused on money, a source close to the situation is quoted as saying that the governing body need the revenue to reinvest in grassroots football as a not-for-profit organisation.

On top of financial concerns, the FA have also highlighted that Old Trafford, the closest stadium with a sufficient capacity, is in use on Saturday 16 April when Manchester United host Norwich City.

As of yet, there has been no confirmation on which semi-final will be played on the Saturday and which will be scheduled for Sunday.

Klopp admits Luis Diaz’s Liverpool impact ‘is as close to miracle’

Advertisements

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed January signing Luis Diaz for his immediate impact at Anfield, admitting it’s as close to a miracle as you’re likely to find.

Signed from Porto for an initial £37m on deadline day, Diaz has managed two goals in his first 12 appearances for Liverpool, but his performances have transcended statistics and many have tipped Klopp’s men to go on and win the title because of his impact.

“You don’t expect miracles immediately from these kind of players,” the boss told Sky Sports. “But he is not far away from doing exactly that. Long may it continue.”

Klopp continued: “There is a reason why you sign a player. The reason is the quality that he has. The reason is the way that he is playing the game.

“With Luis, where it has been really special is that when we saw him we knew that he would fit in immediately. That is really difficult usually but because he did not have to change, that is why we have a really confident boy here.

“He was in a really good moment with Porto, playing good for Colombia, and so he came here full of confidence. But what we tried to make sure is that he does not lose that because of the playbook as we tell him that he has to do this and he has to do that. We want him to be natural.”

Klopp went on to confess that the Liverpool scouts were raving about Diaz from the moment they first watched the Colombian.

“It was clear from the first moment that we saw him that he would be a player who could play immediately, on a specific level, if he could deal mentally with it,” said Klopp. “Because I cannot take the pressure he feels completely off him if he feels it.”

Finally, Klopp acknowledged that Diaz is still adjusting to life in England, with a language barrier still a major issue, but revealed his excitement at just how good the winger could be when he settles.

He added: “That is always completely different from player to player but with Luis, for obvious reasons, there is a language issue with me. I do not speak Spanish and he does not speak English. He is learning. I am not learning so we will have to wait until his English gets better.

“Until then, we have a lot of people here who are in constant talks with him. It will take time. He is at a new club and he is thinking about what people expect. But he is obviously pretty natural here. That is why he plays the way that he plays.”

Pep Guardiola insists either Man City or Liverpool would win this season.

Advertisements

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested it would definitely be possible for his team or Liverpool to complete a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble this season because it has been done before.

Manchester United in 1999 were the first and still only English club to complete it, seen as one of the ultimate feats in English football history, although Guardiola himself has experience of it in Spain after leading Barcelona to league, cup and Champions League titles in 2009.

With City top of the Premier League, preparing to face Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals and into the last eight of the Champions League against Atletico Madrid, attention is starting to turn towards potentially doing a treble of their own.

For Guardiola, the fact is has been done before is proof that it can be done again.

“If United did it, another team can do it,” he said at a press conferece on Friday.

“To break a record is because someone has done it. When it happens – I think it will – it’s not easy, but you can do it,” he added.

The City boss has also suggested it is always a more likely possibility later in the season, when more games have been played and a treble is closer.

“In September or October it’s more difficult,” he explained. “Two months left, yeah it can be done. But it happened once in a lifetime.”

Liverpool also remain in the hunt for a treble – or even an unprecedented quadruple. Having recently lifted the Carabao Cup, the Reds are now only one point behind City in the Premier League table, which promises for a tense final stretch of the title race, and are still in the FA Cup and Champions League themselves.

Klopp insists Mo Salah’s contract standoff won’t affect Liverpool dressing room.

Advertisements

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted Mohamed Salah’s contract standoff will not provoke dressing room unrest at the club.

Salah’s deal expires in summer 2023 and talks over a renewal are currently at an impasse due to the player’s wage demands, believed to be in excess of £400,000 per week.

For now the Egyptian’s future remains shrouded in uncertainty, with both Klopp – on behalf of the club – and the attacker recently insisting the ball is in the other’s court.

However, speaking in his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s crucial Premier League clash at Arsenal on Wednesday night, Klopp was adamant that Salah’s situation would not have a detrimental effect on the squad overall.

“I don’t have to remind any player – and for sure not Mo – of that. No chance,” the German coach said.

“Mo is not a guy for that, not at all. If I don’t line him up [in the team] then his mood goes down. That is possible but (it’s) not against the team or whatever.

“This season everyone is completely committed, we could have some players who don’t play often enough and aren’t in the squad enough and they could create a bad atmosphere. They don’t. They will not. It is a clear commitment for the team for this season and then we will talk about the rest – future, immediate, further.”

He added: “It’s all fine, I don’t know about any kind of reaction or stuff like this. That’s not what I’m concerned about.

“It’s just I think that it’s how it should be in the moment. The decisive parties are in contact and the rest we will see.”

Jurgen Klopp claims Pep Guardiola has pushed him to ‘insane levels’.

Advertisements

Jurgen Klopp has opened up on his professional rivalry with Pep Guardiola, which he feels has pushed both managers to “insane levels”.

Klopp’s Liverpool and Guardiola’s Man City are again in a two-horse race from the Premier League title this season. City are currently top by six points but the Reds have a game in hand, and both teams still have to square off again in April.

Speaking after City extended their lead at the summit with a 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, Guardiola admitted that Klopp’s charges were the toughest team he had faced in his coaching career.

The German has since responded to these comments, returning the compliment and also taking time to praise Guardiola’s Bayern Munich side, whom he faced when in charge of Borussia Dortmund.

“I can give that back, hey?! Easily. I could say City is the toughest opponent I ever had but I should not forget I faced him already at Bayern, so I cannot say that it was much easier, it’s just a different situation,” he said.

“I know what he means – we push each other on insane levels, we pushed each other on insane levels in the last few years. The amount of points both teams collected, OK, we couldn’t cope with it last year for obvious reasons, but in the other years we were really around.

“How I said, I don’t think City would get the amount of points they will get this year if we wouldn’t be around, and the other way around is pretty much the same. It’s good but a lot of games to play, so we will see where we end up.”

Klopp’s sober update on Virgil Van Dijk’s condition.

Liverpool have refused to state that the Dutchman’s injury was season-ending like that of Joel Matip

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Virgil van Dijk is unlikely to return before the end of the current season.

Van Dijk suffered a torn ACL back in October, and although a return to action this year always seemed unlikely, Liverpool have refused to state that the Dutchman’s injury was season-ending like that of Joel Matip.

Advertisements

There is still some hope as Klopp confirmed in his press conference that he plans to include Van Dijk in his 25-man Champions League squad, but he is not optimistic about the defender’s chances of playing.

“Whatever happens, I think we have space for Virgil on the Champions League list,” Klopp said. “I think he was on the Premier League list. Nobody told me I have to change something with that. If we have space in the Champions League list then Virgil will be on the list.

Advertisements

“In the moment, I don’t know where these things are coming from – nobody really, no doctor, nobody really told me there’s a chance for Virgil to play in this season again. I don’t want to say that’s absolutely impossible but it’s not likely. It’s not likely. We don’t have to discuss these things really.

“If we have space we would put them all on, even when all the medical people tell us there’s no chance. We put them on because we believe in miracles from time to time.

“But if there’s no place then we have to consider these kind of things and say, ‘The chance is not too big so we have to make the decision.’ But if they are on the list then it’s only because we hope for nearly a miracle. That’s it.”

Liverpool finally dipped into the transfer market to sign some replacement centre-backs, bringing in Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak from Preston and Schalke respectively, but Klopp warned fans not to expect to see the pair starting together anytime soon.

“The good thing is it’s football still,” Klopp said when asked if the pair’s lack of Premier League experience was behind his decision. “They played in Germany, they played in the Championship, so that’s not a problem.

“Coming into defence, we’ve had 12 or 13 different centre-half pairings, and that makes it more difficult for the likes of Neco [Williams] and Kostas [Tsimikas] as well. Kostas is new, Neco is still young, you search for stability in the team, and when you change that often [it is harder].

“We obviously don’t live in an ideal world, and that means we have to be smart, we have to be quick and we try everything to do that.

Advertisements

We have different things to help them and it goes faster, but we obviously play different to Preston, obviously different to Schalke, that’s clear.

“They will need time, but we don’t have a lot of time, so we will use the time we have in our hands and try our best. If they would have to start tomorrow night together, I think that would not be too cool. But we will give them a few more days.”

Southampton finalizes late hour Takumi Minamino loan move.

Advertisements

The move has also enabled Southampton to send Shane Long out on loan to Championship promotion hopefuls Bournemouth.

Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino has completed a sensational loan move to Southampton in the dying embers of January’s transfer deadline day.

The Japan international has agreed to spend the remainder of the season on the south coast as he goes in search of more game time, having struggled to break into Jürgen Klopp’s plans this season.

The transfer window seemed to be drawing to a quiet close, before news broke of the Saints’ pursuit of the 26-year-old with fewer than two hours remaining to seal the deal.

Advertisements

Having passed a last-minute medical, the 11th-hour loan move has been confirmed in a statement on Southampton’s website.

Boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “I am very pleased to welcome Takumi to our squad for the rest of this season.

“He will help provide another good attacking option, and is importantly the right profile of player for us. This will give us some additional depth in our squad at an important time, and I am looking forward to beginning work with him on the training pitch.”

Minamino – who only joined Liverpool from RB Salzburg a year ago – has featured 17 times in all competitions this season, but has struggled for starts behind the established front three of Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

However, he has still managed four goals and two assists, and his versatility means he will give the Saints an option out wide and in attacking midfield.

A lack of quality depth would have been a real concern for Hasenhuttl as his side attempt to mount a European challenge in the second half of the season.

The Irishman has never been a regular scorer at St Mary’s, but his hard work and willingness to run the channels had seen him in stay in favour over the past few seasons.

Minamino is Southampton’s only arrival of the January window, while young defender Yan Valery was the second player to leave the club on deadline day.

He’s joined Birmingham City on loan, having been shut out of the first team picture by Kyle Walker-Peters.

Liverpool moves to sign Ozan Kabak ‘on loan’ – Report

Advertisements

Kabak has been one of the shining lights in what has been an otherwise disappointing season for Schalke.

Liverpool are pushing to sign Schalke defender Ozan Kabak, but face a race against time to get the deal over the line before the transfer window closes.

The Reds have sparked into life in the transfer window and are looking to conclude deals for two centre-backs. Preston’s Ben Davies is expected to be one, while Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car was identified as an option late on Sunday.

However, talks with the French side quickly hit an impasse, with Mohamed Bouhafsi revealing that a deal was now off the table, and sources have confirmed to NoRM‘s known Media that negotiations are now underway over a loan deal for Kabak.

A target during the summer, Liverpool have long admired the 20-year-old, who has also played his way onto the radar of Manchester United.

A report from Sky Sports News adds that Liverpool have already made preparations for Kabak to undergo a medical in Germany, but it could all come down to whether Schalke can find a replacement before the Bundesliga window closes at 17:00 (GMT).

Schalke have identified their preferred target, but there is no guarantee that they will be able to get a deal over the line in time, particularly as they will not be pocketing much money from Liverpool if they do loan out Kabak.

The Reds are keen to pay a loan fee of around £2.5m and pick up the option to sign Kabak permanently in the summer, but Schalke are yet to accept the bid as they are focused on finding an alternative.

They currently sit bottom of the Bundesliga table, having picked up just eight points from 19 games, but their young defender has definitely stood out.
