JAMB insists on fixed date for UTME, rules out deadline extension.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has once again, insisted that it will never extend the deadline for candidates seeking to write the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry examinations into Nigerian universities.

This was disclosed on Saturday by JAMB Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, during a tour of some computer-based test centres in Abuja designated to conduct the forthcoming examinations.

“Registration is going on well except for some of these schools. The deadline for the UTME will not be extended,” he said.

The JAMB boss reminded parents and admission seekers that the sale of 2023 UTME commenced on 14th January, 2023, and will close on Tuesday, 14th February, 2023, and they should take advantage of the remaining window to purchase the forms.

UTME: JAMB registers 1.1m candidates, says no extension of deadline.

The Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has disclosed that over 1.16 million tertiary institutions admission seekers have so far registered for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Professor Oloyede stated this on Saturday while monitoring some CBT centres in Abuja.

The sale of 2023 UTME commenced on Saturday,14th January, 2023, and close on Tuesday, 14th February, 2023

The JAMB Registrar said, “Registration is going on well except some of these schools. UTME is not a school based examination, it’s individual candidates and you can see what that school, Stella Maris is doing, collecting N30,000 from candidates in the name of JAMB and then end up missing up the telephone number of the candidates.”

He said once they keep the telephone number of candidates, “it is unlikely that the candidates when we are contacting them if we want to make a change in their timetable, you send text to them and it will not get to them after they have graduated from the school and want to do change of course they don’t have access to it.

“That is a way of extorting the parents and we will take adequate steps to make sure that we stop that. One of the reasons is that we will tell every CBT center to stop doing bulk purchase of pin and bulk registration so if a center sales more than one pin to a source or collect money for more than one pin from a source then we will sanction such center.”

He urged candidates to report cases of extortion, saying that there is a code for candidates to reach the board when they come across any case of extortion, while promising there will be a reward for such act

ICPC re-arrests ex-JAMB registrar, Ojerinde.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has re-arrested the former Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Adedibu Ojerinde, on Thursday in Abuja.

According to a statement on Thursday by the Commission’s spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, Prof. Ojerinde’s re-arrest followed a warrant issued by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He is expected to face a team of investigators over new evidence uncovered in relation to his ongoing trial for diversion of funds while he was a public officer.

ICPC operatives uncovered two accounts opened in the names of Trillium Learning Centre Ltd and Sapati International Schools Ltd into which funds were diverted using fictitious names of students.

The Commission had on the 12th December, 2022, invited the former JAMB Registrar for questioning over the new evidence but he wrote through his solicitor requesting for 14 days grace to enable him honour the invitation. Ojerinde, however, refused to honour the invitation as undertaken by his counsel after the expiration of the 14 days on 27th December, 2022.

In the course of its ongoing investigation, the Commission unearthed new evidence that suggests that Ojerinde is the sole signatory to various bank accounts operated in the name of Trillium Learning Centre Ltd and Sapati International School Ltd. Ojerinde allegedly operated those accounts using false identities and forged documents in the names of Joshua Olakulehin Olaniran and Akanbi Lamidi respectively. He also allegedly used another false identity, Adeniyi Banji, to operate a separate account in the name of Standout Institutes Ltd.

The ICPC has recovered the cheque books of the companies’ accounts from Ojerinde, who has been taken into custody at the headquarters of the Commission.

The Commission may likely prosecute the former registrar before a court of competent jurisdiction for offences bothering on forgery of documents, stolen identity, money laundering and concealment of gratification if the new evidence is confirmed.

Ojerinde is currently being prosecuted by the Commission at the Federal High Court Abuja and Federal High Court Minna on an 18-count charge bordering on abuse of office and fraud to the tune of about N10 billion while serving as heads of two government agencies, the National Examination Council (NECO) and JAMB.

He had allegedly conferred corrupt advantages upon himself at different times while being Head of JAMB and NECO, thereby violating Sections 19, 24, 25 (1) (a) and (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000 and Section 1 (1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act, 2006.

JAMB announces registration date.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Saturday announced the sales of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and direct entry forms.

It advised prospective candidates seeking admission to university, polytechnic and other tertiary institutions to begin the process of registration.

It urged interested candidates to obtain their forms from Saturday, January 14, 2023, adding that closing date for registration is February 14, 2023.

The board said the application is also applicable to foreign students at the accredited JAMB registration centre.

It advised candidates to open a new email or have a valid existing email account before starting the process.

Candidates seeking admission into the university, polytechnic and college of education, are required to have five credit at O’level, with English and Mathematics as compulsory.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday approved 140 and above as the national minimum cut-off mark for admission into public universities in 2022

JAMB reached the decision at the ongoing Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

The board also approved 100 as the minimum cut-off mark for admission into polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB’s Registrar, who announced the cut-off said every institution has the right to fix its cut-off mark even up to 220 but no one would be allowed to go less than the agreed minimum marks of 100 for Colleges of Education, 100 for Polytechnics and 140 for Universities.

He further revealed that a total of 378,639 of the 1,761,338 who wrote the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) scored 200 and above.

UTME 2022: Candidates should print notification slips – JAMB.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed all candidates who registered for the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to start printing their 2022 UTME notification slips from Saturday.

JAMB’s Director of Information and Technology Services, Mr Fabian Okoro, made the announcement via a statement released to JAMBULLETIN ahead of this year’s exercise.

According to the statement, the 2022 UTME notification slip is available for printing by all candidates who registered for the examination scheduled to hold from May 6 to 14.

Okoro stressed that the printing of examination notification slip was compulsory for all candidates, as it enables them to know the venue, date, session and time of their examination.

“All candidates are advised to print slips on time so as to know the location of their examination centres, date of their scheduled sessions and time of the examination beforehand, especially with the adjustment in examination schedules this year,” he said.

“This would guide them in making necessary arrangements ahead of the exercise as the board frowns at lateness to its examination; no excuses would be entertained from any candidates as a stitch in time, saves nine.

“Candidates need not visit any CBT centres for the printing of the notification slip as it can be done at any available internet point, be it private or public. To print the slip, candidates are to visit https://www.jamb.gov.ng then click on 2022 UTME slip printing then insert registration number to print.”

The slip contains candidates’ important details such as registration number, the centre to which they were to sit the examination within their chosen examination town, and the expected time to be at the centre.

In a related development, the board insisted that all candidates would be checked into the examination hall using the Biometric Verification Machine (BVM) – a register of attendance in line with its policy of ‘no biometric verification, no examination’.

It stressed that no examination would be rescheduled for whatever reason, saying candidates must prepare ahead and stay close to their examination venues and if possible, pay a prior visit to their centres before the date of the examination.

JAMB asked candidates to be careful not to run afoul of the law, especially at it relates to prohibited items, saying necessary sanctions would be meted out to violators of its code of conduct.

These include flash drives, smart watches, calculators, recorders, mobile phones, spy reading glasses and jewelleries, among others

UTME: CBT centres warned not to charge above N1,000

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said the mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, will hold on Saturday across the country.

To this end, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said all CBT centres should slightly increase their service charge to enable them offer reliable services.

Oloyede said the initial amount permitted to be charged was N700, but due to the energy crisis, no centre should charge candidates above N1000.

He explained that the increase in cost was due to the increment in powering their generator sets.

Oloyede said: “Yes, we have allowed the accredited CBT centres, but we have hitherto asked the centres not to charge more than N700 naira, now we have seen the reality, and we said they could charge up to N1000.

“So the reality is the truth, unless you don’t want them to conduct the examination, we have done the analysis of their expenses and if we insist they must put on their Airconditioners, it means the cost of generator or diesel has to be taken into consideration. We are not increasing our charges.”

JAMB UTME results should be valid for more than a year: Lawmaker.

Rep. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe has proposed a longer validity period for results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB).

The lawmaker (APC – Oluyole) is the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Matters.

The bill was sponsored on the floor of the House to amend the law establishing JAMB.

Akande-Sadipe said the law should be amended to increase the validity of UTME to three years.

She said the current one-year validity was cumbersome, distorting and worrisome to the average Nigerian.

“Most examinations meant for entrance for academic programmes generally last more than a year.

“IELTS, SATS, GRE and other recognised examinations are either valid for three or four years, and they have remained among the best.”

If passed, the law would guarantee candidates’ admission into tertiary institutions three years after sitting for UTME, the Rep member noted.

Akande-Sadipe added that the amendment would minimise the cost of running the examination, allow candidates to plan, project and decide their choices.

Just in: Jamb sets new date for Post UTME screening.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new date for the commencement of the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) screening for the 2020 admission processes.

It revealed that the screening would begin not earlier than September 7, 2020, in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in the country.

The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, announced the new date on Monday in Abuja after a consultative virtual meeting with vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts of tertiary education institutions.

He explained that the shift in the date of the admission process from the earlier announced date of August 21 was to accommodate candidates who would be taking part in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Federal Government had announced that the examination, which is administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) annually, would commence on Monday next week.

“Presently as you are aware, WAEC starts the Senior School Certificate Examination on August 17, it will go on till September 7,” Professor Oloyede said.

He added, “On September 21 or thereabout, NABTEB will commence its examination that will go on till on the 15 of October, and immediately after that, NECO starts on the 5th and will hold till 18 of November.

“Rather than making candidates run, particularly, when they will have to write their school certificate exam in different towns and rush to university elsewhere for post-UTME, like somebody rushing from Sokoto to Ibadan for post-UTME, we believe as a custodian of the highest sector of the education system, we should avoid that.”

The JAMB’s registrar commended the various submissions made by the heads of tertiary institutions during the meeting.

He said institutions that conduct admission exercise without the administration of any-post UTME screening should also ensure candidates whose SSCE results would be released towards the end of the year were not denied participation in the process.

Professor Oloyede also revealed that the Board has withheld the results of candidates that sat for this year’s UTME at correctional service centres (prisons) over suspected infractions.

He said, “For those (institutions) who want to take post-UTME, that cannot be earlier than the 7th of September and it will be held twice – September 7 to October 4, and then it will be held for the second time on the 18 November to mop up those who are taking their school certificate examination.”

The Kano state Executive Council has approved the establishment of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Computer Based Testing Centres (CBTCs) in the five Emirates Councils as zonal offices and 44 Local Government Areas in the state.

The commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammadu Garba stated this on Sunday while addressing newsmen on the outcome of the council’s weekly meeting held at the Africa House, Government House, Kano.

He said it became necessary to increase the number of CBTCs, to prevent a situation where candidates have to be sent to neighboring states of Bauchi, Kaduna, Jigawa and Katsina just to seat for the JAMB Exams.

Garba also revealed that during its sitting, the council approved the establishment of the State Council on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to fast track the spread of ICT skills to the grassroots.

The council, according to him, would be co-chaired by the commissioner of Science, Technology and Innovation and that of local government, while the commissioners for Information, education, higher education as well as all the chairmen of the 44 local governments in the state will serve as members.

Speaking further, the commissioner stated that the council received a proposal from a private developer to use the old Triumph Publishing Company complex to create a specialized Forex Market (Kasuwar ‘Yan Chanji), the first of its kind in Nigeria and another one from Fari Properties Ltd. seeking to transform the abandoned Daula Hotel in the state capital into a residential.

Garba indicated that the council also received proposal for the construction of a multi-purpose ultra-modern shopping complex at the premises of Daula Hotel in the metropolitan area.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has set 160 as the minimum cut-off mark for universities across the country in the 2020 admission session.

JAMB’s registrar Ishaq Oloyede made the announcement on Tuesday June 16, after the 20th policy meeting on admissions to tertiary institutions. The cut-off mark for polytechnics was pegged at 120, while that of Colleges of Education remains at 100 and above.

Commenting on the admission statistics for 2019, Oloyede said that 612,557 candidates were offered admission but 510,957 admission spaces remained unused by the institutions. He added that only 1,157,977 candidates who had the required five credits with English and Mathematics, sat for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) last year.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu on his own part said he has directed JAMB and tertiary institutions to proceed with the conduct of their 2020/2021 admissions which will commence in August.

Adamu said;

“As major stakeholders, we must jointly come up with reactions that would realign our programmes to these new realities.

“JAMB and tertiary institutions could take advantage of the current situation, consider candidates with previous years SSCE and other qualifying results, to proceed on with the admission process.

“Whatever arrangement that the country comes up with in the long run will surely accommodate those who will be taking the examination when the opportunity to do so is worked out.”

Nigeria – JAMB to announce official cut off marks for 2020 admission by June 15th and 16th.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has disclosed that the cut-off marks for this year’s admission have not been fixed. This was disclosed by the Head of Media and Information Dr. Fabian Benjamin in a statement yesterday.

He urged Nigerians, particularly candidates, to disregard any cut-off mark being circulated by “fraudsters”, describing it as “fake.”

According to him, the official cut-off marks would be decided at a stakeholders’ policy meeting that would be chaired by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu. scheduled to hold June 15th and 16th, 2020

He said: “Kindly disregard any cut-off mark paraded by fraudsters. It is fake news.

“Cut-off marks are decided at a policy meeting chaired by the Hon. Minister of Education with all heads of tertiary institutions, CEOs of regulatory agencies in education and other critical stakeholders in attendance.

“This meeting has been fixed for June 15 and 16 all things being equal.

“Until this meeting is held, nobody can talk of cut-off mark. Nigerians are advised to disregard any such marks being paraded.”

Just in: Jamb hand over 180 candidates to police.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has handed over 180 candidates in the just concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME) to the police for prosecution over alleged involvement in examination malpractices.

It said 70 per cent of the candidates have been arraigned, while others are undergoing investigation.

JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this yesterday in an interview in Abuja.

He said the candidates were arrested across the country during the conduct of the examination that ended last Saturday.

The board had on Sunday published the names and states of some of the candidates fingered in examination malpractices in its weekly bulletin, with Imo, Anambra and Enugu states topping the list with 26, 12 and 12 candidates.

Some of their offences included: examination by proxy, attempt to cheat, forceful entrance, tampering with examination documents, smuggling of phones into the examination halls, among others.

Other states on the list of malpractices are Abia, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Ondo, Oyo and Osun.

The JAMB spokesman said that the arrested candidates were with the police, adding that their arraignment had started.

He said: “They are about 180 candidates. We arrested them all over the country. We are harmonising the list and following up on it to ensure that all of them are arraigned.

“Most of them have been arraigned already. Seventy per cent of them have been arraigned already.

“They (the candidates) are with the police. So the police will prosecute them. We don’t have prosecuting powers. When the police start prosecution, they will certainly get across to us.

“Most of them have even been arraigned. When the arraignment is concluded, we will give you a comprehensive report..

“When we get to a stage that is important for everyone to know, we will let you know. But some of them have already been arraigned by the police.”

We didn’t postpone 2020 UTME – JAMB allege.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has not postponed the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as rumoured in some quarters.

There were rumours that the ongoing exams had been rescheduled, especially after several government directives — including shutting of schools nationwide — aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

But in a post on its social media page on Thursday, the board described such rumours as untrue, adding that the examination would come to a close on Saturday.

It added that only few candidates in Bayelsa and Rivers states who had their exam dates adjusted would sit for the exam next week.

“This is to bring to the notice of the public that the Board has not rescheduled its examinations as being rumoured around,” it wrote on Twitter.

“All examinations would end on Saturday, 21 March 2020 with the few candidates in Bayelsa and Rivers States only who were earlier scheduled to sit the examinations next week.

“The Board hereby advises candidates in the two states to reprint their slips to note the venue and time of their adjusted examination schedules.”

The development comes about two days after the exam body also dismissed rumours that it had cancelled results for the UTME taken between March 14 and 16.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new method for candidates who sat for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB in a statement on Wednesday via its verified Twitter handle also refuted reports that it has cancelled the results of examinations held on Saturday, March 14, Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

According to the examination body, candidates who sat for the 2020 UTME should check their results via their mobile phones.

The statement directed the students to check their 2020 UTME results by sending RESULT to 55019, and not on the board’s website.

“JAMB has not cancelled the results of its examination conducted on Saturday, March 14, Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17, 2020,” the tweet read.

JAMB suspends 47 centres ahead 2020 UTME

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has suspended 47 computer-based test (CBT) centres across the country over various forms of infractions.

The board disclosed this in the latest edition of its weekly bulletin released on Monday.

The exam body also noted that the centres were suspended on grounds ranging from their “inability to produce JAMB vital security instruments entrusted to them and technical deficiency during third-party examination.”

Others include “extortion of candidates directly or through proxy and for one or more registration infractions.”

The exam body also disclosed that it has registered a total of 2.1 million candidates for this year’s exam.

“A total number of 1,949,983 registered for UTME, while 160,640 registered for Direct Entry,” it wrote in the bulletin.

This is coming after its February 17 deadline for prospective candidates to register for the exam. The recent figure is also an increase from its recently announced 1.9 million registered candidates.

The development makes it the first time JAMB would record such huge registration since 1978, with the highest being an estimated 1.8 million candidates in 2019.

This year’s examination is coming on the heels of several controversies that had earlier trailed requirements set by the board.

JAMB had in January suspended the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for registration of 2020 candidates following outrage over the difficulty associated with process.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has registered over 1.9 million candidates for its 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s head of press and public relations, disclosed this while speaking to the press on Sunday, ahead of the board’s Monday registration deadline.

According to him, the figure represents the highest the board has ever recorded since its inception in 1978, having recorded an estimated 1.8 million candidates in 2019.

“The registration closes on Monday night. As I speak to you, we have registered over 1.9million. That is the highest we have ever had in the 41-year history of the board,” Benjamin explained.

“Right now, we have surpassed the last year’s statistics at 1.8million. That is to tell you that nobody has an excuse for why he or she could not register.

“On the February 18 mock, we have put everything in place. Our workers who are deployed for the exercise are already on the field.

“And as you are aware, the essence of the mock is to test the readiness of our facilities and also give the candidates the opportunity to have a hands-on experience on the computers.”

JAMB had earlier suspended the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for registration of 2020 candidates after many had decried the difficulty they faced undergoing the procedure.

The board also advised candidates to reject admissions not done on its official letter headed paper, warning institutions to stop offering admissions to applicants through their own portals.

UTME candidates should not involve in exam malpractice – Adamu Adamu warned

As the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) holds mock for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) today (Tuesday, February 18, 2020), Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu has warned sitting candidates against examination malpractices.

While warning universities and other tertiary institutions to abide by the rules of the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) established by JAMB, Adamu noted that the government is aware of the corrupt practices such as admission racketeering, amongst others.

“Candidates who are billed to sit for the 2020 UTME are urged to refrain from any form of malpractices as this administration detests all forms of corruption, including examination malpractice and admission racketeering.

“Permit me to seize this opportunity to state that the leadership of any higher institution found to be involved in admitting any candidate without the prior approval of the board or outside the established platform – CAPS – would be considered and treated as corrupting the system,” Punch quoted Adamu as saying.

Dr Fabian Benjamin, the JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, had however disclosed that the board has so far registered over 1.9 million prospective candidates for its 2020 UTME, with a few hours to the end of the exercise.

Three Cyber Cafe operators nabbed after extorting JAMB applicants

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Oyo State Command, on Monday, paraded three cyber cafe operators for allegedly extorting applicants for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The State Commandant, Iskilu Akinsanya, paraded the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Akinsanya said the three suspects operated LNETWork Cyber Cafe, Value Max and GG Media Cyber Cafe adding that the suspects operates an unlicensed Computer Base Test (CBT) Centre and sold JAMB forms to applicants above the approved price of N4,700.

He said, “The suspects sold the form at the rate of N5, 500 to JAMB applicants which is against the Federal government approved price. The Registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, has made it clear that on no account should any centre sell above the approved price.

“Following our intelligence, we gathered that some Cyber Cafe are selling above the price and we swung into action and the three suspects were arrested.”

He lamented that the excesses in the charges would put a burden on the parents and the Federal government frowns at it, adding that it is a crime and part of the corruption being fought in the country.

Calling on applicants not to patronise illegal CBT centres, the Commandant advised them to alert NSCDC whenever they notice any centre selling above the approved price.

One of the suspects, the owner of Value Max Cyber Cafe, when asked told reporters that they were just assisting the students to generate codes and not collecting money from them, saying he was not aware that helping the students to generate codes was a crime.

The Taraba Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested two suspects for allegedly defrauding students at an illegal Joint Admission and Matriculations Board registration centre.

The Taraba Commandant of NSCDC, Alhaji Aliyu Ndanusa, disclosed this to newsmen at the corps’ headquarters in on Saturday.

According to him, the government approved price for JAMB registration was N4,000 while the two suspects were charging students N4,200 in contravention of the directives.

Ndanusa said that the NSCDC would not sit back to allow fraudulent persons to defraud the unsuspecting members of the public.

He said the two were arrested following an outcry by JAMB officials in the state over the activities of unauthorised persons defrauding students.

“Operatives of the NSCDC have been recently trained at a workshop for the purpose of monitoring the registration centres to ensure that they comply with the FG’s directives of N4,000 registration fees for JAMB.

“Anybody who adds any amount to this has already contravened the directives and will be made to face the wrath of the law,” he said.

Ndanusa said the suspects would be charged to court immediately after investigation.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State command, has arrested one Ezennia Onyeka for allegedly operating illegal Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration centre in Nnewi.

The state Commandant of the corps, Mr David Bille, confirmed the arrest in an interview in Awka on Friday.

Bille said the suspect was arrested in Nnewi, following intelligence report that he was registering JAMB candidates at the cost of between N5,000 and N7,000 each.

Bille said that many unsuspecting candidates had fallen victim to the fraud at the centre, known as 100 Per Cent Computer Center.

He said: “The suspect was charging the unsuspecting candidates above the official N4,700 stipulated by JAMB.

“After careful and discrete investigation carried out by men of NSCDC, it was uncovered that the cyber cafe being operated by the suspect was not in the list of centres accredited by JAMB to sell its forms.’’

Bille said that the NSCDC operatives, who arrested the suspect, disguised themselves as prospective JAMB candidates.

“The operatives observed that the suspect was exploiting innocent and young Nigerians seeking for brighter future.

Bille said that the suspect admitted the offence and pleaded for forgiveness with a promise to turn over a new leaf.

The commandant said that investigation was still ongoing and that he would be made to face the full wrath of the law at the end of the investigation.

JAMB set to suspend NIN requirements

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), announced yesterday that the National Identity Number (NIN) will no longer be a pre-requisite for candidates interested in registering for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) admission process.

It also announced a temporary suspension of its partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in the registration and issuance of NIN to candidates.

JAMB had, hitherto, made NIN a pre-requisite for registration for the 2020 UTME with a view to eliminate cases of impersonation as was recorded in 2019 UTME exercise.

Explaining the reason for the suspension, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, who addressed journalists in Abuja, yesterday said: “We had agreed that NIN would be a pre-requisite for registration for 2020 UTME which will commence on Monday (tomorrow). But there was public outcry on the frustrations and difficulties that candidates were subjected to before getting the NIN.

“We were forced to review our strategies and we arrived at a point that it was obvious that we could not go ahead with NIN as pre-requisite for registration because of the challenges that might affect the participation of large number of candidates.

“To this end, we have decided to suspend the use of NIN for 2020 UTME exercise. We have unanimously agreed to shift the use of NIN to 2021 when candidates must have been given enough time and opportunity to get the NIN. However, about 11, 000 of our staff, permanent and adhoc, that would participate in the exercise would still be required to submit their NIN for verification.”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has suspended the compulsory use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for the registration of candidates for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry until 2021.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this during a briefing at the headquaters of the board in Bwari, Abuja. According to him, the move was to provide more time for candidates to get their national identification numbers.

It was gathered that the decision to suspend the use of NIN for 2020 UTME registration followed criticisms from the public over the poor timing policy and the difficulty in obtaining the NIN by prospective candidates.

With this development, candidates can now apply for the 2020 UTME/DE which is set to commence January 13, 2020 without NIN.

The date for the commencement of the JAMB examination remains March 14th, 2020.
