2023: Controversies over continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu.

Advertisements

President Muhammadu Buhari has been slammed over the issues surrounding the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his continued detention by the Federal Government.

Despite the ruling by the Court Appeal for the IPOB leader to be released, the Buhari administration stood its ground. It later approached the same court and got a stay of execution.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had held that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in the forceful rendition of Kanu to Nigeria, thereby making the terrorism charges against him incompetent and unlawful.

But the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami had vowed that Kanu would not be released despite the court ruling, insisting that the Federal Government would pursue other charges against Kanu.

This is despite the likes of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, elder statesmen such as former Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the late Mbazuruike Amaechi, Chief Edwin Clark among other prominent groups and individuals calling for adherent to the court ruling.

Also some rights groups such as the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law (Intersociety) had knocked the Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, over the development.

The group said Malami’s activities were gravely pushing Nigeria into a regional and international abyss of mockery, which it said has far-reaching consequences on the country’s socio-economic development, regional and international human rights, rule of law and democracy ratings.

Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, told Buhari that the continued detention of Kanu, would be viewed as kidnapping and would spike other forms of violence in the South East.

Advertisements

HURIWA further accused Malami of acting the script of Miyetti Allah Cattle sellers, insisting that Buhari must stop playing what it described as the toxic Northern ethnic card and obey the court verdict that discharged the IPOB leader.

“Any further detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would amount to active hostage taking and an outright criminal case of kidnapping which is actionable. We wonder why a lawyer of Malami’s illustrious status adorning the title of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria is now speaking like a one hundred-level law student of one road-side law faculty in a corner of Nigeria,” Onwubiko said.

He added that, “The Federal Government had rushed to the Appeal Court after the Federal Attorney General and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami had used media platforms to impugn and discredit the panellists who freed Kanu.”

Many other people still believe that Kanu’s release would restore peace in the South-East.

“In other democracies, when a court gives its ruling, the government or whoever it affects follows it up immediately. But that’s not the case in Nigeria. One thing the Buhari government is known for is its total disobedience to the rule of law. A court gave an order but instead of obeying the court ruling, they’re busy transferring the judges that gave the ruling and installed those that will do their bidding,” a security expert and senior lecturer in one of the Federal Universities told DAILY POST

“People living and doing businesses in the South East are forced to sit at home every Monday and I don’t how this is helping Malami and the Buhari government.

“But just as it has been said, it appears this government does not want peace in the South East. It’s looking like they want the region to be destroyed. If that’s not the case, tell me why Nnamdi Kanu has been detained despite the court order.

“I know the APC and some people in the Buhari government want to use the situation to their own advantage. The plan is to keep the South East in crisis with the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu so that the people would be scared to come out to cast their votes or participate fuller in the election activities. They know that the South East is the stronghold of the Labour Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi,” he added.

Kanu: How Mbazulike Amaechi died in pain, unfulfilled dream

Advertisements

Nigerians, Tuesday morning, received with shock news of the sudden demise of First Republic Minister, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi.

For the people of the South-East region, it is one death too many.

DAILY POST reports that the 93-year-old former parliamentarian died as one of the surviving respected Igbo leaders.

Residents say his death is even more painful considering that he died without achieving his last major wish.

It could be recalled that in November 2021 the nonagenarian had led other eminent Igbo leaders to President Muhammadu Buhari, during which he requested for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

He had begged Buhari to release Kanu to him as a way of political solution to the disquiet in the South-East zone.

Other members of the delegation were former Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, former President of Igbo socio-cultural group, Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike and Tagbo Amaechi.

Amaechi told Buhari that the situation in the South-East was “painful and pathetic,” as businesses had collapsed, while education was crumbling amid fears.

He promised that if Kanu was released to him as the only First Republic minister still alive, “he (Kanu) would no longer say the things he had been saying.”

Advertisements

Responding, Buhari had told his visitors that the request was a tough one.

He, however, said owing to the age of the leader of the delegation, Amaechi, he would consider it.

The President had said, “You’ve made an extremely difficult demand on me as the leader of this country. The implication of your request is very serious. In the last six years, since I became President, nobody would say I have confronted or interfered in the work of the judiciary.

“God has spared you (referring to the ex-minister), and given you a clear head at this age, with a very sharp memory. A lot of people half your age are confused already. But the demand you made is heavy. I will consider it.”

DAILY POST, however, reports that six months after, Buhari made a U-turn, declaring that the law would run its course of Kanu’s trial.

The event was in Ebonyi during his two-day visit to the State. He met with Igbo leaders as part of the visit.

And addressing them, Buhari, who had earlier promised to look into the request made by the elder statesman, said the court would determine the fate of Nnamdi Kanu.

The President told his audience made up mostly of South-East Traditional Rulers’ Council that, “I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders regarding a wide range of options, and as I have said previously, this matter remains in the full purview of the courts where it will be properly adjudicated.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians, for whom life is already tough and would like to earn a decent and honest living.

‘‘There are many that fit this profile and the government owes them that obligation to protect lives and property.”

This statement from the President dashed the hopes of Amaechi and indeed the entire people of the South-East zone.

Though the now late Amaechi later repeatedly pleaded that his wish be granted by the Buhari government, it never came to be until he transited early this morning, Tuesday.

He had looked up to a peaceful South-East and end of the worrisome Monday sit-at-home, which would be made possible by Nnamdi Kanu’s release but that desire never came to fruition.

The Appeal Court had acquitted and discharged Kanu but the Federal Government returned to the same Court with a stay of execution application, which was granted.

Igbo congress to Malami: “Kanu deserves justice.”

Advertisements

The World Igbo Congress, WIC, has called on the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, gets justice.

The body was reacting to the Appeal Court in Abuja judgment that ordered the release of Kanu and Justice Evelyn Anyadike’s Federal High Court judgment against the extraordinary rendition of Kanu on October 26, 2022, in Umuahia.

Among other things, Justice Anyadike had ruled that Kanu should be returned to Kenya prior to his arrest in June 2021.

Despite the court’s ruling, Kanu is still locked up by the Department of State Services, DSS.

Advertisements

Reacting to the judgment, the Igbo congress urged Malami to sanction Kanu’s release.

The call was made in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Chris Ogara; Basil Onwukwe, PRO; and Anthony Ejiofor, Chairman.

The statement forwarded to Noble Reporters’ known Media by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor reads: “World Igbo Congress, on behalf of all Igbo in the Diaspora, extols the judgment delivered on Thursday, October 26, 2022, by the Federal High Court in Umuahia (presided over by Justice Evelyn Anyadike) against the extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu on October 26 2022.

“World Igbo Congress sees this monumental judgment as the zenith of “judicial courage” even as the judicial somersault by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in appealing the freedom already granted to Nnamdi Kanu by the three-man panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja led by Justice Hanatu Sankeyas persists.

“By this judgment in the Federal Court Umuahia, we see that there is yet hope in the Nigerian Judiciary and we call on the Attorney General to redirect himself by toeing the line of judicial integrity, honor and rule of law to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu receives earned justice.

“Once again, and in keeping with our statement of October 18, 2022, World Igbo Congress calls on the AGF and the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu now.”

Police arrest two suspects during raid of IPOB/ESN training camp in Ebonyi.

Advertisements

The police in Ebonyi says a tactical unit has raided three camps of the outlawed IPOB/ESN operatives and arrested two suspected members of the gang

Chris Anyanwu, spokesman of the state’s police command, said at a news conference in Abakaliki on Sunday that the camps were located in a thick forest close to Opeke River, in Omege village, Agba Community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

Mr Anyanwu said the team also recovered assorted arms and ammunition, military uniforms and many incriminating exhibits.

“The operation was spearheaded by the Command’s Tactical teams, assisted by the military and DSS in the state.

“It was prompted by quantum pieces of reliable evidence, professionally elicited from interrogation of Nnamdi Ngwuta, aka State Commander, number three and another operative of the outlawed group, Felix Ogudu, who were earlier arrested.

“While accessing the camps, the combined teams were ambushed by the criminal elements with rains of sporadic shooting in their direction.

“Without hesitation, the allied team swiftly responded and engaged them in the same manner and of course their superior fire power subdued the miscreants.

“They chanted morale-boosting war songs, dived into the Opeke River and swarmed in different directions as they scampered for safety.

“However, a good number of them were neutralised while many escaped with bullet injuries.

“After dislodging the criminal elements and taking over the ground, the camp, which they christened “IGBO BU IGBO TRAINING SCHOOL CAMP”, was ransacked and destroyed.

“Equally, a wooden bridge under construction, intended to aid the miscreants in their coming and going, was dismantled,” he added.

Mr Anyanwu listed the recovered exhibits to include 11 bullet-proof jackets and eight sets of military camouflage uniforms.

“Two camp-gas cookers, 110 rounds of FNC live ammunition, 40 rounds of GPMG live ammunition, two PRO electronics scanners (EOD equipment), five empty canons and five single-barrel guns were also recovered among others.

The police command implored Ebonyi citizens to assist with credible and reliable information that would help to arrest the hoodlums.

Mr Anyanwu said that giving the information would help to rid the state of heinous crimes, especially during the fast approaching Christmas/New Year celebrations as well as the electioneering period.

Free Nnamdi Kanu – Senators demand.

Advertisements

Senators from the South East Caucus have demanded the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in obedience to Appeal Court order.

Daily Post reported that the caucus, comprising of eleven Senators, made the call in a statement issued and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

The Appeal Court last week acquitted and discharged the IPOB leader of terrorism charges leveled against him by the Federal government.

However, Kanu who was re-arrested from Kenya in June 2021, is still in the custody of the Department of State Services as the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami insisted that he was only discharged but yet to be acquitted.

Following the refusal of the President Muhammadu Bubari-led government to release the separatist as ordered by the Appeal Court, the Senate caucus asked the president to keep the promise he earlier made to the Igbos and release Kanu.

“We should be mindful of our diversity and the strengths we as a country derive from there. This is the time to show magnanimity and statesmanship. The Appeal Court has provided the leeway for the authorities to walk the talk as ones desirous of preserving Nigerias unity and respect for her diversity.

“Accordingly, we as a Caucus and stakeholders in the Nigeria project appeal to Mr President, to remember the promise he made to a delegation of elders of Igboland sometime ago and release Nnamdi Kanu, especially now that the Appeal Court by that ruling removed the burden of interference from him. Going on Appeal would ultimately negate that kind gesture,” the caucus stated.

Those who signed statement include: Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Minority Whip), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Majority Whip), Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), Senator Sam Egwu, Senator Stella Oduah and Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator T A Orji (Ochendo).

Others are: Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, Senator Onyewuchi Ezenwa, Senator Micheal Nnachi, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Senator Frank Ibezim, and Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Uba.

They made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday signed by Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, chairman of the Anambra Traditional Rulers Council and Chibuzo Opoko, the Methodist archbishop of Umuahia.

Others who signed the statement were Lawrence Agubuzu, the Enugu Traditional Rulers Council chairman and Valerian Okeke, Catholic archbishop of Onitsha.

The joint body said it welcomed the judgment of an Appeal Court which discharged Nnamdi and described it as an “unprecedented opportunity to overcome the challenge of trust that has obstructed the path to peace.”

The joint body added that it had consistently called on all stakeholders for peacebuilding and resolution of security challenges in the South East based on justice, equity, fairness and love.

“We have also supported the call for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the federal government to douse the current tensions across the Southeast and create an atmosphere for collaboration towards a constructive resolution of issues,” they stated. “The judgment of the appellate court presents a timely and unprecedented opportunity to overcome the challenge of trust that has obstructed the path to peace and opens the window to winning the hearts and minds of the people.”

The Igbo coalition of traditional and religious leaders added, “We, therefore, unequivocally support the call for the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in line with the unanimous judgment of the court that his extradition and subsequent trial was illegal.”

The traditional rulers and bishops said they had undertaken extensive consultations with all stakeholders to broker a permanent, regionally coordinated restoration of the South-East.

They noted that the march towards peace and the restoration of normalcy in society and the economy required the collective action of all people.

NDF leader, Edwin Clark blasts Malami over delayed release of Kanu.

Advertisements

President Muhammadu Buhari has been called out by the leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, Edwin Clark.

Clark called on Buhari to obey the ruling of the Appeal Court and release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Recall that the Appeal Court had last week discharged and acquitted the IPOB leader of all terrorism charges leveled against him by the Federal Government.

But the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami insisted that Kanu was only discharged but not acquitted.

The National Security Council also backed Malami’s stance, debunking Kanu’s complete acquittal. The development has kept the secessionist in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, despite the judgement.

In a statement on Monday, Clark, an elder statesman, recalled how President Muhammadu Buhari vowed during several meetings with Southeast stakeholders that he would obey the decision of the court regarding the IPOB leader.

“Now that the Court of Appeal has given its judgment on the matter, I am imploring the President to obey the judgment of the court and release the young man, and allow peace to reign.

“At this time, when insecurity is the order of the day, anything that would enhance the peace and stability of the country must be embraced”, he said.

Clark also tackled Malami over his stance, saying he (Malami) had abandoned part of his job and was now involved in what he described as “executive rascality.”

“I have, sadly, observed that the Attorney General has, no doubt, abandoned part of his job and is now involved in ‘executive rascality’, to the chagrin and dismay of patriotic Nigerians at home and abroad,” he added.

FG argues Nnamdi Kanu’s release; says he is not acquitted.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) has said the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu was not acquitted by the Court of Appeal.

He said the appellate court only decided a single issue that borders on rendition.

He said Kanu has other pre-rendition cases to answer.

Malami made the clarifications in a statement through his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu.

The statement reads: “The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has received the news of the decision of the Court of Appeal concerning the trial of Nnamdi Kanu.

” For the avoidance of doubt and by the verdict of the court, Kanu was only discharged and not acquitted.

“The decision handed down by the Court of Appeal was on a single issue that borders on rendition.

” Let it be made clear to the  general public that other issues that predates rendition on the basis of which Kanu jumped bail remain valid issues for judicial determination.

Kanu is “a free man”

Advertisements

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday declared as illegal and unlawful, the abduction of the Biafra nation agitator, Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria and quashed the entire terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

The Court held that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in the forceful rendition of Kanu to Nigeria, thereby making the terrorism charges against him incompetent and unlawful.

In a judgment in an appeal by Kanu, by Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie, the criminal charges by the Federal Government against Kanu were voided and set aside.

The Appellate Court said that the Federal Government having flagrantly breached the fundamental rights of Kanu, lost the legal right to put him on trial.

The Court held that laws are meant to be obeyed and that the Federal Government has no reason to have taken laws into her own hand in the illegal and unlawful way the matter of Kanu was handled.

Justice Adebola held that failure of Nigeria to follow due process by way of extradition process as prescribed by law was fatal to the charges against Kanu.

The Appeal Court further held that the failure of the Federal Government to disclose where and when the alleged offences brought against Kanu were committed was also fatal to the terrorism charges and made them liable to dismissal.

“By engaging in utter unlawful and illegal acts and in breach of its own laws in the instant matter, the Federal Government did not come to equity in clean hands and must be called to order.

“With appalling disregard to local and international laws, the Federal Government has lost the right to put the appellant trial for any offence.

“Treaties and Protocols are meant to be obeyed. No government in the world is permitted to abduct anybody without following due process of extradition. Nigeria is not an exception or excused. Nigeria must obey her own law and that of international, so as to avoid anarchy”, the Court held.

FG drops charge against Nnamdi Kanu.

Advertisements

The Federal Government has dropped one of the charges against the detained leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this is as Human Rights Lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), who leads the delegation of legal practitioners representing the IPOB leader, urged the Court of Appeal, Abuja, to strike out the remaining charges citing lack of credibility.

Advertisements

The session at the Court of Appeal commenced at about 10 am on Tuesday as Kanu’s legal team defend him over allegations of terrorism and treasonable felony.

The hearing of Kanu’s appeal challenging the seven-count charge filed against him by the federal government was earlier slated for October 11 but was later brought forward to today, September 13.

It would be recalled that the federal government had re-arraigned Kanu on an amended 15-count charge bordering on treasonable felony. However, on May 28, the trial judge, Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja, struck out eight of the 15-count charge.

The Appeal marked No: CA/ABJ/CR/ 625/2022; is challenging the remaining seven-count against Kanu.

Sit-at-home order: IPOB orders total lockdown in Southeast Tuesday.

Advertisements

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has declared a sit-at-home across the Southeast on Tuesday next week.

IPOB tagged the sit-at-home, a day of civil action across the Southeast.

The group declared the order ahead of the Appeal Court hearing of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned visit to the Southeast.

A statement by IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, said the sit-at-home would be a total lockdown of the Southeast.

IPOB explained that it was implementing the existing sit-at-home order regarding Kanu’s court appearance.

The statement reads partly: “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our indefatigable liberator Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, wish to announce to the general public, especially Biafrans that Tuesday 13th of September has been declared a day of civil action in the form of sit-at-home in Biafra Land.

“The Tuesday 13th September, 2022 civil action is very important for two reasons:

“First, our leader’s Appeal court hearing that was supposed to be on October 11th has been brought forward to 13th September, 2022. As usual we call on Biafrans and lovers of freedom to demonstrate our solidarity with our leader who has been bearing our yoke in detention for over a year now.

“There shall be a TOTAL LOCKDOWN of the whole of Biafraland on Tuesday the 13th of September 2022. The Imposter Buhari cannot be coming to Imo State while he continues to detain our leader Mazi Nnamdi in the DSS custody.”

The separatist group urged people of the Southeast to go about their Monday’s activities and prepare for Tuesday’s lockdown completely.”

The IPOB leader also reiterated its call for the unconditional release of its leader.

He stressed that the country can’t afford another civil war.

Reacting, Igboho, in a statement by his spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, said: “We know President Muhammadu Buhari is the Patron of all the Fulani worldwide. But Yoruba land can never be conquered by Fulani.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was reminding Nnamdi Kanu and the Igbos of the massacre they carried out during the Biafra War. The President should know that this can never be repeated again in any of our land.

“We have all woken up to Fulani Agenda.”

DSS imposes strict measures on Nnamdi Kanu – IPOB cries out.

Advertisements

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Saturday, accused the Department of State Services, DSS, of placing a strict measure on its leader, Nnamdi Kanu in detention.

IPOB said DSS has refused to allow Kanu spend the approved time with his visitors.

Spokesman of IPOB, Emma Powerful, said DSS has restricted Kanu’s time to receive visitors from two hours to 30 minutes.

In a statement he signed, Powerful accused DSS of flouting court orders that allowed Kanu to receive visitors for two hours.

Powerful wondered how Kanu would interact with his lawyers for 30 minutes during permitted visiting days.

He accused the secret police of torturing Kanu psychologically.

The statement reads partly: “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wish to reiterate our displeasure once again over the deliberate, permanent and insidious psychological torture being committed against our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in contravention of UNHRC and all other International Human Rights laws and principles in DSS confinement and torture facilities.

“The DSS agents have continued to flout and violate the existing court orders strictly given by justice Binta Nyako concerning the welfare of Kanu, IPOB leader (High profile prisoner of conscience).

“The global community should take note of the atrocities being perpetrated against our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Nigeria Government and their lawless DSS.

“Kanu is being tortured in DSS dungeon because he spends four days in Solitary confinement and allowed only 30minutes to relate with humans on Mondays and Thursdays. As against the subsisting Court Order that allowed Kanu to stay up to 2 hours with his visitors, DSS no longer allows his visitors to stay with him longer than 30 minutes on each visiting day.

“How do DSS want Kanu’s lawyers to interact with their clients for 30 minutes over ongoing cases? As in the tradition of this Fulani Government and their lawless DSS, the Court approved time has been illegally changed in breach of the Court Order without due process. This flagrant abuse of Court Orders and dehumanization of our Leader is not acceptable and must be stopped going forward.”

Nov 14: Court dismisses Nnamdi Kanu’s bail application.

Advertisements

The trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu on terrorism charges has been shifted till November 14 by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu is however to remain in the custody of the Department of State Service, DSS, till the date since the shift in trial was at his instance.

The trial was put on hold by Justice Binta Nyako following the appeal instituted against the high court order upholding seven count charges against Kanu.

Justice Nyako had dismissed 8 out of 15 count charges brought against Kanu by the Federal Government and ordered his trial in the remaining 7 counts.

However at Tuesday’s proceedings, Kanu’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome SAN, informed the court that his client has filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja challenging the competence of the seven counts.

In the appeal marked CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022, Kanu, through Ozekhome SAN, prayed the appellate court to nullify the seven counts still standing against him.

He predicated his appeal on the ground that the alleged offences in the charges were committed outside the shores of Nigeria, hence, no court in the country has jurisdiction to try him.

Ozekhome prayed the court to stop further trial in the charges until the Court of Appeal decides the issues brought before it.

He explained that the appeal had been duly entered and record of proceedings transmitted to the appellate court adding that with the latest development, the Federal High Court can no longer continue with the trial.

However, counsel to the Federal Government, Mr David Kaswe, made spirited efforts to persuade the court to ignore the argument of Ozekhome on the ground that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 prohibit stay of criminal trial in the country.

In a short ruling, Justice Nyako upheld arguments of Ozekhome and shifted further trial till November 14 to await the outcome of the Court of Appeal decision

HURIWA warns security agencies to stop framing actors as IPOB members.

Advertisements

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), yesterday, cautioned security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army and others to stop framing up Nollywood actors and innocent civilians as members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

The rights group also noted that the African Traditional Religion (ATR) was being criminalised and demonised by security forces in the South East, as these agencies regularly invade sacred shrines to desecrate them under the guise of pursuing suspected IPOB members.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said: “The trend of trying to score erroneous points, by detaining and branding innocent Igbo youths, and prominent sons and daughters, as criminals is disconcerting.”

The group also bemoaned declining professional practices among members of the security forces and urged security agencies to release all Igbo youths falsely detained and languishing in cells and prisons all over the country.

HURIWA recalled that the Imo State Police Command arrested a Nollywood actor known as Hycent Azunna and branded him a member of IPOB’s Eastern Security Network (ESN), a claim that his friends nullified as untrue.

Also, last October, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police colluded to arrest a veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, over alleged promotion of Biafra and for wearing a Biafra outfit, while distributing bread and other items to the poor.

He was humiliated and spent days in detention but was later released when public outrage greeted his arrest. No charge was brought against him, as all allegations by security agents against him were false.

Similarly, a 21-year-old lady, Glory Okolie, was arrested, last year, by officers of the Intelligence Response Team in Owerri, Imo State. Okolie was arrested on June 17, 2021, the same day she was to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

HURIWA said: “The arbitrary arrest of youths in Owerri and labelling them as IPOB members are highly disturbing.

“While we encourage clamp-down on criminals and ‘unknown gunmen’ who are distabilising the South East, we appeal for greater use of hardcore intelligence and skills to flush out mass killers and hoodlums.

“Framing up of Igbo youths as criminals is utterly nonsensical. Smacks of apartheid practices and ethnic profiling must stop.”

“The Command’s Tactical Teams, on 18/5/2022 at about 0600 hours hastily mobilised and with the positive revelations made in course of interrogating the suspects earlier arrested in connection with the killing, the team was able to locate the criminal hideout in Ubah Agwa in Oguta LGA of Imo State and immediately cordoned area and tactical went into the den.

David Umahi accuses Ndigbo of delaying negotiation for Kanu’s release.

Advertisements

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State has accused the Igbo socio-cultural body, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, of delaying discussions with the Federal Government over Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

The governor made the claim on Friday when he featured on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“We wished that it should be solved and that’s why I went to Mr President. And our leader, Chief Mbazuluike Amaechi, has also gone to the President and he agreed for a political solution, but it should be us that should initiate it,” he said on Friday.

“And I am asking Ambassador Obiozor (Ohanaeze President), he is very slow about this because I had gone to the DG DSS. I had gone to the Attorney-General of the Federation and they were ready to receive them to discuss. I had excluded myself so that politics is not by any means adduced to it.”

“So, we should be encouraging the president of Ohanaeze to work with the IPOB leader as Mr President suggested and then let them, you know, bring something before the Federal Government and say, ‘These are what we are bringing on board.’ I think that the President is not averse to that,” the government added.

The governor, who said he foresaw the growing insecurity in the South East, reiterated that that was why his government opposed the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) from the onset.

He, however, said many people misunderstood him and “jumped into and used it for politics”. Umahi lamented that the situation is now “a pain in everybody’s eye” in the region.

Umahi’s comment followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the state where the Nigerian leader commissioned several projects.

During the visit, leaders of the South East region pleaded with the Nigerian leader for the release of Kanu who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

But Buhari told the Ebonyi State Stakeholders’ Forum at the Government House in Abakaliki on Friday, that only the court can decide the IPOB leader’s fate.

“I have listened carefully to the various appeals from the elders to the traditional leaders, regarding a wide range of options,” he said. “And as I have said previously, this matter remains in the full purview of the court where it will be properly adjudicated.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians for whom life is already tough and will like to just go out and earn a decent and honest living.”

We didn’t tag IPOB as terrorists organization: BHC.

Advertisements

The United Kingdom has clarified that it did not designate the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation.

The clarification comes after it emerged that the UK sought to exclude IPOB members who have committed human rights abuses from its asylum program.

A statement signed by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, had stated that “Nigeria welcomes the decision by the United Kingdom to proscribe the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group.”

But the British High Commission in Abuja, in a statement on Friday, said this was not the case.

“We are aware of inaccurate reporting circulating in the media and online that the UK Government has added the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to the UK’s list of terrorist groups or organisations banned under UK law,” the statement said.

“These reports are untrue. The ‘Indigenous People of Biafra’ (IPOB) is not a proscribed organisation in the UK.

“The inaccurate reporting relates to the 13 April 2022 publication by the UK Government of a revised Country Policy and Information note (CPIN) on separatist groups in SE Nigeria, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). CPINs provide country of origin information (COI) and analysis of COI for use by UK Government decision-makers handling particular types of protection and human rights claims.

“All asylum and human rights claims made in the UK are considered on their individual facts in accordance with our obligations under the UN Refugee Convention and European Convention on Human Rights, taking into account relevant background country information and case law.

“The CPIN on separatist groups in the South East, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), provides a general assessment of risks faced by individuals belonging to those groups. These assessments are based on an analysis of publicly available country information obtained from a wide range of reliable sources including media outlets; UK and other governments; local, national and international organisations; and non-government organisations.

“This CPIN also acknowledges that the Nigerian government has proscribed IPOB as a terrorist organisation, some members of IPOB have reportedly used violence against the state and members of the public, and advises that persons who have committed human rights abuses must not be granted protection.”

‘Confiscate IPOB assets’
In his Friday statement, Mr Shehu asked the UK to confiscate IPOB assets, shut down their communication channels and sanction the issuance of visas to IPOB’s funders in Nigeria.

“Such sanctions have played a critical role in combatting other terror groups. And make no mistake: today Africa is a breeding ground for terror, with local and international groups alike gaining strength across the continent, thriving on the economic devastation of the pandemic,” Mr Shehu said.

“Nigeria’s intelligence and security forces are the first lines of defence against such groups, including ISIS and Al Quaeda affiliated Boko Haram. We rely on our allies in the West for their support.

“IPOB’s – and its 50,000 strong paramilitary unit’s – reign of terror has seen villages butchered, school buses set alight and politicians’ homes bombed. Through their international network of radio and TV stations, they threaten further violence if their demands are not met, while inciting violence and religious and ethnic tension between Nigeria’s Christian and Muslim populations.

“Their mouthpieces and their wallets are their most effective tools – it is these assets Nigeria’s allies must target next. And there is no time for complacency.”

I’m not against IPOB’s agitation, I just despise violence: Wike.

Advertisements

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Monday said he supports the agitation by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) but not the violence associated with the group.

Wike, a frontline presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated this during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“I support the agitations in the South-East, whether anybody likes it or not, I do,” Wike said. “We should sit down at the round table and discuss it.

“But again what do I do wrong when you have not gone to say ‘bomb everything there.’ I am a governor and you are telling me what has never happened and I should accept? Do you need to kill everybody in my area simply for me to say I am with you? And I say no, I won’t do that.”

Not a Threat

The governor also faulted critics who shaded him for saying he wasn’t supporting IPOB. He wondered where they were when he publicly supported the cause of their agitation against injustice in the region.

According to Wike, there is injustice and division in the country. He, however, insisted that the best way to protest against injustice isn’t by killing innocent souls in the country.

When asked if IPOB poses a threat to him, the governor neither affirmed nor denied it.

He said, “Why will they be a threat to me? It is because of the division in this country today that we have never had this country being divided this way.

“What pains me is that people take politics to think that I want to use this opportunity to fight this person. There came a time IPOB was singing praises about Wike. This Nnamdi Kanu was singing praises (that) Wike is our son.”

IPOB warns Wike to stay away from southeast.

Advertisements

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Wednesday warned Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and a Presidential aspirant to steer clear of the Southeast.

IPOB said Wike denied having any links with the Southeast in the past, hence should keep off the region as he tries to canvas for votes.

Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, issued the warning while condemning Wike’s recent visit to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.

Recalling the killings in Obigbo, Rivers State, IPOB vowed to go all out against anybody who hosts Wike in the Southeast.

In a statement, Powerful said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential aspirant should be ashamed of himself for begging Igbos for votes.

Powerful said Wike denied being an Igboman; hence visiting the Southeast may consume him.

He said: “We, the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU condemn the recent visit by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to Obi of Onitsha Igwe Alfred Achebe in Anambra State. The visit is part of the reasons the youths are not happy with Igbo leaders.

“IPOB will not take it lightly on any person who intends to host Nyesom Wike in the hinterland after the genocide he committed in #Obigbo, and he declared that he is not an Igboman. Wike is a genocidist and should not be forgiven. His father took over Igbo property in the name of abandoned property and he trained Wike with the money he accumulated from abandoned property he collected from Igbo people in Igweocha after the war of genocide against the Igbo people in 1970, which moved Wike to hate anything associated with Igbo but he should not come for Igbo vote. We are warning him.

“Gov, Nyesom Wike committed genocide against the people in his state claiming he is not Igbo man and today he became an Igbo man because of political interest and votes he needs from Igbo land, Wike refused to understand that a time like this will come in his life. Wike should be ashamed of himself because he could openly beg Igbo people for one vote in the election.”

The separatist group stressed that Wike’s visit to the Southeast is highly provocative.

IPOB added: “Is Wike coming to urinate on the graves of the Igbo youths he slaughtered in Obigbo during the #EndSARS protests? His visits to any Igbo state is highly provocative because some of the Igbo youths taken into several security cells in the Northern states are yet to return. Wike and his advisers should stop daring IPOB and Igbo youths. Wike’s family, friends and associates should advise him to stay off any state in Igbo land because it may consume him, anybody who knows him should let him know that.

“We are equally warning any traditional ruler, PG, Chief, elder, Governor or anybody who will invite Wike in any part of Igbo land to tread with caution because that amounts to challenging Igbo youths and IPOB members.

“Those hosting Wike now, where were they when Wike was ordering the killing of Igbo youths at Obigbo? They all maintained criminal silence then. Are they now rewarding him for killing Igbo youths? Love for money has enslaved elders and traditional rulers who should know better but we won’t tolerate that anymore. Wike cannot be going about celebrating in Igbo states which he denied having any links with after ordering the execution of Igbo youths and suspected IPOB members. This is iniquity against the innocent victims of his wicked actions.

“Wike said he was not Igbo and we have taken him by his words that he is not Igbo and can never become Igbo man because he hates Igbo with passion.

“We respect Igwe Achebe because he is a respected traditional ruler in Igbo land but we want him and others to keep a distance from Wike because Wike hates Igbo if they don’t know and if they don’t retrace their steps let the public never blame us.

“Those Wike arrested and handed over to Fulani controlled federal government in Abuja are still there till today languishing in different security detentions. We managed to release more than a thousand (1000) innocent citizens both men and women most of whom were raped at these security detentions and dungeons.

“Considering all his wickedness to the Igbo youths at Obigbo in Rivers State, we declare that Wike has no moral ground to even contemplate not of the temerity to want to visit any part of Igbo land. He is, therefore, not welcome to any Igbo State. Wike cannot be coming to Igbo land to spit and dance on the graves of those he unjustly slaughtered and we all know that he is a demented fellow.”
