Frank Lampard’s worst defeats as Everton manager.

Frank Lampard is the next manager to have been chewed up and spit out by the poisoned chalice that is Everton Football Club.

Defeat to West Ham on Saturday proved to be the final straw, with the former midfielder receiving his marching orders at the start of this week. By doing so, Lampard has become the sixth boss to depart the blue side of the Mersey in as many years.

It was always going to be a challenge for a man that’s yet to prove himself as a head coach, and his tenure was laden with drab performances and even worse results.

Here are some of the worst defeats Lampard suffered as Everton boss.

The Toffees had shown plenty of fight the week prior in a 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City, and Lampard’s stellar record against Tottenham as both a player and manager meant some supporters were optimistic that Everton could upset the odds in this Monday night clash.

The visitors, however, were nothing short of a dire and a Spurs side on the come-up under Antonio Conte took full advantage. Michael Keane set the tone when he booted one into his own net to give the hosts the lead before Jordan Pickford let a rather tame Son Heung-min effort squeeze underneath him.

Harry Kane tripled Spurs’ advantage before half-time and by the 55th minute, they were 5-0 ahead before taking pity on their woeful visitors.

We all remember Lampard’s primitive summary of Everton’s FA Cup defeat at Selhurst Park, right?

According to the already under-the-cosh Everton boss, the Toffees had been dismantled in the cup due to a bunch of weak goals.

This was billed as a mammoth relegation six-pointer. Everton had won just once since their drubbing at Spurs and, alongside Burnley, were fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table.

A Richarlison brace from the penalty spot overturned an early deficit in the first-half as the visitors matched their physical hosts in testing conditions. Everton proceeded to enjoy much of the second-half after they were pegged back by Jay Rodriguez just before the hour, but a pair of errors from Pickford and Ben Godfrey allowed Maxwel Cornet to snatch a seemingly crucial winner five minutes from time.

After eventually clinching survival, Lampard sought to turn things around at Goodison Park at the beginning of the 2022/23 season. However, the Toffees enjoyed a winless start to the new campaign before a goalless draw in the Merseyside derby on matchday 6 ignited a mini-resurgence.

However, the dark clouds were forming over Lampard’s tenure just before the World Cup as they suffered back-to-back humiliations on the south coast. Bournemouth beat Everton 4-1 in the Carabao Cup just days before they thrashed them 3-0 in the league.

This felt like the point of no return.

There had been little to suggest that Lampard was the right man to lead Everton forward either side of the World Cup, but a well-earned point at the Etihad at least offered a glimmer of hope. Still, the Toffees were winless in six games when a dynamic Brighton side came to town and put four past them in a chastening home defeat.

Goodison Park is meant to be one of the toughest places to go and win in the Premier League, but the Seagulls made the challenge look worryingly simple.ย Evertonย inexcusably conceded three goals in six second-half minutes to put the game beyond them as a powerless Lampard watched on in the home dugout.

And yet Lampard managed to keep hold of his job for a few more pointless weeks.

He took the Toffees to London Stadium to face fellow strugglers West Ham, with pressure mounting too on Hammers boss David Moyes.

A first-half brace from Jarrod Bowen proved to be the difference. Fans unfurled flags at full-time protesting against the board. Only a handful of players came over to applaud their support.

Everton manager Frank Lampard charged by FA for Anfield bias comments.

Frank Lampard has been charged by the FA for ‘bringing the game into disrepute’ after he claimed Liverpool benefit from a refereeing bias during games at Anfield.

Lampard made the comments after his Everton side slipped to a 2-0 defeat against their bitter rivals last month courtesy of second-half goals from Andy Robertson and Divock Origi.

During the game, Anthony Gordon was not awarded a penalty after colliding with Joel Matip in the box, a decision which enraged Lampard.

“Well it’s a penalty in the second half. You don’t get them here. If it’s Mo Salah at the other end, it’s a penalty,” he said at the time.

He also added: “The ref was quick to whip a yellow card and when the little stuff went off in the middle of pitch and if you look back at that with VAR, there’s some questionable things going on in that, too. Maybe that’s to be expected when you come here.”

Lampard has since been charged for his comments, the FA confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

“Regulation and Discipline update: Frank Lampard has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to post-match media comments that he made following Everton FC’s Premier League match against Liverpool FC on Sunday 24 April 2022,” it read.

“It is alleged that the manager’s comments constitute improper conduct as they imply bias and/or attack the integrity of the match referee โ€” or referees generally โ€” and/or bring the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3.1. Frank Lampard has until Monday 9 May 2022 to provide a response.”

Single goal win wasn’t easy for Everton, but Chelsea โ€œwere helplessโ€

Everton kept Premier League survival in their own hands as Richarlison scored the only goal of a vital 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Frank Lampardโ€™s men remain in the bottom three, but narrow the gap on both Burnley and Leeds to two points with a game in hand to come.

Richarlison pounced on an error from Cesar Azpilicueta one minute into the second half to give the home side and an anxious crowd at Goodison Park something to cling onto.

But they needed Jordan Pickford to show why he is England number one with a series of stunning saves to get over the line.

Defeat leaves Chelsea still with work to do if they are to secure a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.

The Bluesโ€™ advantage over fifth could be cut to five points by the end of the day if Arsenal avoid defeat at West Ham.

But Evertonโ€™s far greater need for the points shone through.

The Toffees have not fallen out of the top flight since 1954 and could face financial ruin if they do not dig themselves out of trouble in their final five games of the campaign.

Burnleyโ€™s dramatic late win at Watford on Saturday had left Lampardโ€™s men five points adrift.

But it is Leeds who may now be looking nervously over their shoulders as they have to face Arsenal and Chelsea in their final four matches.

After a tense first 45 minutes, Richarlison gave Everton the hope they needed with a cool finish after Azpilicueta slipped on the edge of his own box.

The Brazilian then teed up Vitaliy Mykolenko for what should have been a second moments later.

Instead, the home side had to withstand wave upon wave of Chelsea attack.

Mason Mountโ€™s shot came back off the inside of one post onto another before Pickford sprinted across his line to repel Azpilcuetaโ€™s follow-up effort.

From the resulting corner, Pickford was brave to block Antonio Rudigerโ€™s powerful strike with his face.

The nerves of the home support were shredded during seven minutes of added-on time, during which Pickford came to his sideโ€™s rescue again to deny Mateo Kovacic.

Cristiano Ronaldo reveals gruesome injuries after Everton defeat

Advertisements

Cristiano Ronaldo limped off the pitch at the end of Manchester Unitedโ€™s 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park with two visible bloody wounds on his left leg.

Ronaldo led the line for a hapless United side that were outfought by the Toffees โ€“ in the five-time Ballon dโ€™Or winnerโ€™s case, quite literally as he was left with nothing to show for his battle scars.

United dominated the ball but managed only four shots on target in 95 minutes. Ronaldo himself couldnโ€™t get any change out of Everton centre-backs Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Injured Leg After Everton Match // Noble Reporters Media

Since the game finished, an image of Ronaldo removing his shin pad and gesturing at the gruesome wounds on his lower leg, have been widely shared online.

The only thing keeping United in seventh place in the Premier League table this weekend was Wolvesโ€™ defeat to Newcastle on Friday night. Had Bruno Lageโ€™s team won, they would have leapfrogged the struggling Red Devils and stayed there.

Even though Saturdayโ€™s result was only the third time Rangnick has suffered defeat in a Premier League fixture, United have won only one of their last five games in the league โ€“ and just three of their last nine. Since the start of February, they have also been knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough and the Champions League by Atletico Madrid.

Solskjaer’s United suffer disruptions ahead Everton clash.

Solskjaer and the United squad were then able to go in and carry on their preparations for the crucial game without any further problems or setbacks.

Manchester United endured brief disruption to their preparations for Saturday nightโ€™s Premier League clash with Everton and Old Trafford when fire engines were called to the teamโ€™s hotel in Salford seven hours before kick-off.

United typically use the luxury hotel, located just across the River Irwell from Manchester city centre and a short drive to Old Trafford, as a base before home matches.

But when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his squad arrived on the team coach on Saturday lunchtime, fire engines were already on their way to the hotel.

NoRM‘s known Media writes that the United party pulled up shortly after 1pm, only for two fire engines to also arrive almost immediately afterwards.

Crews of firefighters are said to have jumped from the vehicles and rushed inside, only for it be end up as a false alarm.

The firefighters are reported to have then left with everything appearing to be fine and the Mirror suggests the problem may have been caused by a fire alarm being set off in the hotelโ€™s kitchens.

Whatever the issue, Solskjaer and the United squad were then able to go in and carry on their preparations for the crucial game without any further problems or setbacks.

After back-to-back games without victory, United returned to winning ways last time out when they thrashed Southampton 9-0 at Old Trafford to equal their own Premier League record from 1995.

Advertisements

The result almost doubled their goal difference, completely reversing the damage inflicted by the 6-1 defeat against Tottenham earlier in the season, and kept United in second place in the table.

A win against Everton would see United go level on points with leaders Manchester City and put the pressure on their rivals, who are in action away at Liverpool just under 24 hours later.

B. Fernandez shines in United’s 3-1 away win against Everton.

Advertisements

United survived spells of pressure from Everton in the second half, the hosts seeing plenty of the ball in the Red Devils half without really creating anything clear cut.

Manchester United eased the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 3-1 win over Everton at Goodinson Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils had trailed inside 20 minutes but produced a Bruno Fernandes-inspired comeback as the midfielder scored two and set up another to secure a vital three points.

Everton raced into an early lead when Bernard latched onto Victor Lindelof’s flick and fired low past David de Gea.

But United’s response was instant, Bruno Fernandes powering Luke Shaw’s cross home to level the scores, before the Portuguese midfielder added a second as his arcing cross bent straight in despite Marcus Rashford’s attempts to glance the ball goalward.

Solskjaer’s side wrapped up the three points at the death, Fernandes sliding in Edinson Cavani on the counter attack for the Uruguayan to net his first United goal.

Let’s get into some player ratings.

Everton

Harry Maguire, David De Gea
  1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Jordan Pickford (GK) – 5/10 – Fumbled a United free kick and was fortunate to not concede a penalty after appearing to clean out Maguire. Good distribution, mind.

Advertisements

Seamus Coleman (RB) – 6/10 – Embarked on one particularly excellent marauding run in the second half and produced an intelligent turn and pick out to find Doucoure in the dying stages.

Mason Holgate (CB) – 5/10 – Question marks over both of Everton’s centre halves for United’s two goals, with both Fernandes and Rashford afforded acres of space in the Toffees area.

Michael Keane (CB) – 6/10 – Left a chasmic gap between himself and Holgate for both of Fernandes’ goals. Good on the ball as Everton built from the back time after time.

Lucas Digne (LB) – 7/10 – Combined well with Bernard in the first half, with Everton looking most dangerous when the pair linked up down the left flank. Clattered the outside of the post during one foray forward.

Advertisements
Bruno Fernandez
  1. Midfielders

Allan (CM) – 8/10 – Allowed Rashford to run off him in the buildup to United’s second. Heavily involved, adding a real bite and steeliness to the Everton midfield. Flew into tackles, harried the United midfield, but was also hugely efficient while in possession.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (CM) – 6/10 – Involved more defensively than going forward, winning tackle after tackle and hardly giving the United midfield a moment of peace.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (CM) – 4/10 – A relatively quiet afternoon for the Everton midfielder, struggled to get involved and saw much less of the ball than his two midfield partners. Was replaced after an hour.

Advertisements
Alex Iwobi
  1. Forwards

Bernard (LW) – 7/10 – Marked his first start of the season with a goal, moving the ball onto his right foot and firing low past De Gea at the near post. Combined well with Digne in the first half, but switched to the right flank in the second and was considerably quieter.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ST) – 6/10 – Cut an isolated figure at times and hardly got a sniff of goal – a header in the opening exchanges the only real opportunity he had. Despite not finding the net, his link up play was effective and he hardly gave the United backline a moment’s respite.

James Rodriguez (RW) – 5/10 – One of his quietest performances in a blue shirt, and Everton were all the poorer for it. Moved into the midfield three after an hour.

  1. Substitutes

Alex Iwobi – 6/10

Cenk Tosun – 5/10

Manchester United

Harry Maguire
  1. Goalkeeper & Defenders
David de Gea (GK) – 6/10 – Had very little to do all afternoon bar picking out Bernard’s strike after 19 minutes.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) – 6/10 – Struggled to contend with the combination of Digne and Bernard in the first half, but produced a more assured display in the second as United were forced to defend for large periods.

Victor Lindelof (CB) – 7/10 – Mistimed a header to flick the ball onto Bernard in the buildup to Everton’s opener but was otherwise very solid as United kept the Toffees at bay in the second half.

Harry Maguire (CB) – 8/10 – Put in a terrific defensive shift, getting his head on absolutely everything. Produced a couple of particularly impressive searching long passes in the second half, and just got a touch on the ball before clearing out Lucas Digne in his own box.

Advertisements

Luke Shaw (LB) – 7/10 – Grabbed his second assist in two games as his floated cross was headed home by Fernandes and put in an energetic, dogged performance.

Officials, Juan Mata & Paul Pogba
  1. Midfielders
Scott McTominay (CDM) – 8/10 – Solid and robust defensively and tidy in possession offensively. Shielded the United backline expertly – exactly what they were missing on Wednesday evening.

Fred (CDM) – 7/10 – Played slightly further forward than McTominay and was full of energy, demonstrating a cracking turn of pace on a couple of occasions to surge forward. Robust defensively.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM) – 8/10 – Levelled the scores with a header, perfectly timing his arrival into the box and sending Shaw’s delivery into the top corner. His arced cross then went straight in to give United the lead.

Advertisements
Marcus Rashford
  1. Forwards
Juan Mata (RW) – 6/10 – Influential in United’s equaliser, shifting the ball around quickly and drifting in between the Everton midfield and defence before setting Shaw away.
Advertisements

Anthony Martial (ST) – 6/10 – Provided a great piece of control to put himself through in the first half, but he fired just wide. Replaced with 10 minutes remaining.

Marcus Rashford (LW) – 6/10 – Combined well with Fernandes for United’s second and sent a good opportunity straight at Pickford in the second half. Not quite at his sharp, lively best.

  1. Substitutions
    Axel Tuanzebe – 6/10

Paul Pogba – 6/10

Edinson Cavani – 7/10

Final score: Tottenham 1-0 Everton

Advertisements

The night which ended with a hug for the cameras between Hugo Lloris and Son Heung-min started with a warm embrace between the two managers, old foes meeting in combat for the first time in a decade.

Jose Mourinho was at Inter Milan and Carlo Ancelotti was at Chelsea when their teams collided in the last 16 of the Champions League in 2010.

That was a tie played out in febrile atmospheres, with Inter rejuvenated on their way to a Treble and Mourinho making his first return to an adoring crowd at Stamford Bridge, where Ancelotti was already on the way to a Double.

How things have changed. On Monday night the two managerial legends met in north London, in the near silence of post-pandemic football and in charge of two mediocre team contesting the dubious privilege of a boost towards a late run at the Europa League places.

Spurs came out on top, winning for only the second time in 10 games, and yet the abiding image of the game will be of captain Lloris fighting to confront his team-mate Son as the teams filed from the pitch at half-time.

Advertisements

Tottenham were a goal ahead, thanks to a shot by Giovani Lo Celso which was diverted past his own goalkeeper by Michael Keane but they had switched off in the closing seconds and conceded a couple of chances.

Lloris was furious and stalked towards Son, pointing his finger and refusing to pardon his French. It seemed to be that the Spurs ‘keeper thought he ought to have made a greater effort to prevent a forward run by Richarlison.

Lo Celso managed to wedge his body between the pair and hold Lloris at bay as Eric Dier gave Son a hefty shove in the back to hasten his retreat to the dressing rooms.

It is only four months since Dier himself was wading into the crowd at White Hart Lane to defend his brother who had become embroiled in a row with a Tottenham supporter after their exit from the FA Cup on penalties at the hands of Norwich.

Advertisements

This time, the infighting came with Spurs on their way towards only their second victory in 10 games and a much-needed three points which lift them into eighth place in the Premier League.

It was heavy going at times against an Everton team in good form. Certainly not a win to satisfy the Spurs purists, those convinced Mourinho is not the man to take them forward after Mauricio Pochettino.

Although, this was a night when it was all about the win. About avoiding defeat which would have seen them slide below Everton and into the bottom half of the table. And, despite lacking fluency and a goal laced with fortune, they were the better team.

They struck midway through the first half when Mason Holgate blocked a shot by Harry Kane and the ricochet fell kindly to Lo Celso, who collected the ball, twisted onto his left foot in a tight space and went for goal.

Advertisements

His curling effort appeared to be going wide until it hit Keane as he tried to recover ground, deceived goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and dropped into the net.

Spurs dug in to defend which would have impressed their manager. Dier was strong alongside Toby Alderweireld who was restored at the heart of the defence, his first start since the lockdown and his first start since the rather feeble European demise in Leipzig.

Tottenham grew in confidence after going ahead. Dier swerved a free-kick over and Kane smashed one into the defensive wall after a foul on Son by Andre Gomes.

Advertisements

Everton suffered a blow when they lost Holgate to injury before half-time. He appeared to come off worse as he felled Lo Celso and, although he tried to soldier on, could not continue and was replaced by Yerry Mina.

Ancelotti’s side have been in good shape since the restart, with a goalless draw in the Merseyside derby followed by victories against Norwich and Leicester. Here, however, 40 minutes had passed before they extended Lloris.

Their first glimpse of a chance came from a deep corner taken by Gylfi Sigurdsson and met at the back-post by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who peeled away from his marker and nodded the ball down towards goal. Lloris swept the ball safely out for a corner with a hand.

Tottenham switched off again, in the fifth minute of added time at the end of the first half, when they surrendered possession cheaply on the half-way line and failed to close down. Mina carried the ball forward and gave it to Richarlison and the Brazilian striker unleashed a fierce drive which grazed a post as it flew wide.

Advertisements

Lloris was still fuming as he came off the pitch and unleashed his anger in the direction of Son, who certainly looked sharper when he returned for the second half.

Son has been subdued since the restart, unable to recapture the form he had before breaking an arm in February and returning to his native South Korea to serve his military service during the lockdown.

Perhaps Lloris saw the need to fire him up. Son went close to scoring on three occasions in quick succession in the second half. Twice he forced goods saves from Pickford and was narrowly off target with another effort.

A second goal eluded Tottenham but they protected their lead. Everton improved in the second half without seriously threatening to equalise.

Advertisements

Substitutes Anthony Gordon and Moise Kean tested the Spurs ‘keeper. Kean forced two saves in the closing period, first with a backheeled flick and then a powerful effort through a crowded box.

There remains plenty for Ancelotti to work on. Mourinho, too. And the managers hugged again. And Lloris gave Son a friendly squeeze after a quiet word in his ear from the Spurs press man.

And everyone smiled and insisted how this proved they cared and it was all about the passion. These things happen all the time, they say, and yet they don’t.

But this has been a most curious campaign at Tottenham. And this was one more fascinating episode for their fly-on-the-wall documentary covering the slide from the Champions League final. Chairman Daniel Levy might be on to Amazon negotiating a higher fee.

Coutinho ‘Offered to Everton’ on potential transfer

Advertisements

Philippe Coutinho has reportedly been offered to Everton on a one-year loan as Barcelona look to offload the former Liverpool star.

Coutinho has been tipped to return to the Premier League this summer, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle among the clubs who have been linked with the midfielder.

There has even been speculation he could be re-signed by Liverpool, which would be something of a shock after the Brazilian’s ยฃ142million move to Barca in January 2018.

But now the 28-year-old has been offered to Everton, according to The Transfer Window podcast.

It is claimed that Barca would pay a third of Coutinho’s wages to make the deal more affordable for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Advertisements

Coutinho would represent the kind of marquee signing Everton owner Farhad Moshiri wants to make to help Ancelotti turn the Blues back into a force in the Premier League.

The player’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, is believed to be close friends with Moshiri, and that could aid any deal.

However, whether Coutinho would sign for the neighbours of the team he graced for five years in the Premier League remains to be seen.

Coutinho will be able to play for Bayern Munich in the closing stages of the Champions League after the club reportedly reached an agreement with Barcelona to extend his loan deal.

Advertisements

His original deal with the recently crowned German champions was due to expire on June 30, but the club have now managed to extend it for two months in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, according to Sky Germany.

Bayern have still not taken up their option to sign Coutinho on a permanent deal at the end of his loan agreement, and are unlikely to do so.

Coutinho has not featured for Bayern since the return of football as he recovered from surgery on an ankle injury.

But he is now back in full training ahead of their final two matches of the Bundesliga season, with the club having wrapped up the title on Tuesday.

Newcastle ‘join transfer race’ for Chelsea and Everton target Coutinho

Advertisements

Philippe Coutino has been linked with a shock move to Newcastle United as speculation continues over the former Liverpool star’s future.

Coutinho could be on his way back to the Premier League this summer, with Chelsea believed to be leading the race to sign the Barcelona misfit.

Tottenham, Everton and Leicester have also been touted as potential destinations for the Brazilian, who has failed to hit the heights of his starring role at Liverpool since making a big-money move to Barca in January 2018.

But Newcastle are the latest club to be mentioned in connection with the 27-year-old, who has spent the season on loan at Bayern Munich.

Advertisements

With the Magpies set for a ยฃ300million takeover by a Saudi-led consortium, Mundo Deportivo reports that the Tyneside club would be willing to match Barcelona’s ยฃ110m price tag for Coutinho.

The attacking midfielder would be a flagship signing for new owners looking to establish Newcastle as a serious force in the Premier League.

Bayern are believed to be unwilling to pay Barcelona’s asking price to make Coutinho’s switch permanent, while Liverpool have told the player they are not interested in re-signing him.

Bale, Ramsey link with surprise move to Everton.

Alex Iwobiโ€™s Everton are being linked with a surprise move for Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale and Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Following their shock appointment of legendary Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti, the Merseyside club are looking to take the next step towards finally achieving their long-term goals.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri sees Ancelotti as the perfect manager to steer the club back to glory, but there is an acceptance that the playing squad needs improving if they are to compete for the title.

The belief is that Everton need six or seven top-class players to get where they want to be, and a source has confirmed to 90min that club officials have discussed trying to lure both Bale and Ramsey to Goodison Park.

The logic behind this ambitious plot is that both players are thought to be unsettled at their current clubs.

Madrid are ready to offload Bale this summer as they donโ€™t want to pay his huge ยฃ350,000-a-week wages, and it is understood that Los Blancos would even let Bale leave on loan with no up-front cost if a club offered to pay the majority of the Welshmanโ€™s salary.

For Ramsey, he has grown frustrated with life at the Allianz Stadium, having started just nine Serie A games during his debut season in Turin.

He is not keen on spending another season on the bench and he is aware that Juventus have informed representatives they would be open to letting him go if the right offer arrived.

The midfielder earns a similar wage to Bale, so covering both would be a huge challenge for Everton, but the Toffees accept that they will have to spend big if they want to keep the club moving in the right direction.

Moshiri believes the core of the current squad is excellent and capable of mounting a real push towards the top of the table, but only if they can add some more star quality.

Landing both Bale and Ramsey would be an enormous challenge, but they are the kind of moves which Everton want to make to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City for the league title.

{Video} Twitter users react after Iheanacho got punched by Ederson in City clash

Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho was wiped out by Manchester City goalkeeper, Ederson, five minutes before half-time in Leicesterโ€™s 1-0 defeat on Saturday, after he collided with the Brazilian as they both competed for the ball.

Iheanacho while trying to head home James Maddisonโ€™s pass, got hit in the face by goalkeeper Ederson, who was trying to reach the ball first. Leicester appealed for a penalty, but only a corner was given, and while Iheanacho continued after treatment, he was substituted at the break on the advice of the club medical staff.

Twitter users react after Kelechi Iheanacho is

No penalty or red card was given and now some football fans on Twitter have come out to blast referee Paul Tierney and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for not sending off Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, after the ”reckless challenge,” with one user comparing Ederson’s punch to that of heavyweight boxers Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.

Everton, ready for acid test – Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti says Everton are ready for an acid test of their revival under his leadership as the Champions League hopefuls head to Arsenal on Sunday at the start of a tough run of games.

Ancelottiโ€™s side has taken 17 points from his eight Premier League matches in charge โ€” a return bettered only by runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool (24) over the same period โ€” and have moved from 15th to ninth since the Italian arrived in December.

There are more tests lying in wait for the Toffees after the trip to north London, with home games against Manchester United and Liverpool and a trip to fourth-placed Chelsea offering a closer examination of their European credentials.

โ€œOf course we have to be focused on Arsenal, but if we want to think about Europe there are very important games after Arsenal,โ€ Ancelotti said.

โ€œWe have to play against United, Chelsea, and Liverpool. After these four games, we can see whatโ€™s going for Europe.โ€

Everton arrives at the Emirates Stadium this weekend looking to close the five-point gap on Chelsea as they attempt to gatecrash the battle for Champions League.

Manchester Cityโ€™s two-year European ban has opened the door for the team that finishes fifth to qualify for next seasonโ€™s tournament, pending the result of Cityโ€™s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

However, Evertonโ€™s only meetings with Englandโ€™s elite have ended in defeat since Ancelotti took over, with Manchester City beating them in the league and a youthful Liverpool side handing them a disappointing FA Cup exit.

Victory against Arsenal, who have European ambitions of their own after last weekendโ€™s thumping of Newcastle, would be a significant statement of intent as Ancelotti aims to prove that Evertonโ€™s run is not a flash in the pan.

โ€œThis is a really important game against a strong team away but we need to have the confidence to do our best and try to win,โ€ said the 60-year-old.

โ€œI know that Arsenal improved a lot in the last period, they are more confident, they are playing better so it will be difficult, but the spirit of the team is good and we have confidence.โ€

โ€“ Competitive streak โ€“
Ancelottiโ€™s relaxed public persona masks a fiercely competitive streak that has taken him across Europe in search of more managerial glory at an age when many of his peers are ready to step away from such a stressful job.

He has won domestic titles with Chelsea, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich, as well as lifting the Champions League with Milan and Real Madrid.

His reputation lost a little lustre after a troubled spell with Napoli that ended with his dismissal from the Italian club in December after 16 months in charge.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages last season was compounded by a poor run in Serie A this term, with talk of squad unrest.

So when Ancelotti arrived at Goodison Park to replace the sacked Marco Silva a few weeks later there were doubters who claimed his decision to join Everton smacked of one last payday before retirement.

Evertonโ€™s situation was hardly fitting for a man supposedly in search of a quiet life however as Silvaโ€™s struggles had left the club in a relegation battle.

Wisely retaining beloved interim boss Duncan Ferguson on his backroom staff, Ancelotti has brought a renewed sense of belief and a more positive style of play.

In his opening two games, Everton produced 43 shots โ€” the highest number they had managed over successive games in four years.

He has brought the best out of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has six goals under Ancelotti, while Gylfi Sigurdsson has been revitalised as a deep-lying midfield playmaker.

Everton fans, who quickly labelled him โ€œCarlo Fantasticoโ€, have latched onto the hope provided by Ancelottiโ€™s assured presence in the dug-out after so many years of unfulfilled expectations.

Whether he remains fantastic in their eyes will be influenced by results over the next few weeks.

Carlo Ancelotti Sends Warning to Barcelona Over Richarlison Pursuit

Carlo Ancelotti has warned Barcelona that they would need to make an offer Everton ‘cannot refuse’ to sign Brazilian forward Richarlison at the end of the season, while stressing his reluctance to sell.

The Spanish side were rumoured to have failed with an ยฃ85m bid for Richarlison during the January window, and while such claims were quickly rubbished, it is thought that there may be some substance to Barcelona’s interest.

Richarlison
However, regardless of whether they are interested or not, it looks like Ancelotti has little interest in selling a key player.

โ€œI don’t think it will be difficult to resist [a summer bid for Richarlison] because it is enough to say no, there is no possibility because Richarlison is an important part of the future of Everton,โ€ the boss said, via the Daily Star.

โ€œThis is the base from which the club has to build the future, and Richarlison is part of it, like the other young players we have – [Jordan] Pickford, [Mason] Holgate, [Moise] Kean, [Michael] Keane, [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin. We have a lot of young players.โ€

Michael Keane is actually 27 years old, but we’ll move on.

Ancelotti did joke that he might listen to a swap deal from Barcelona, hinting that he might be prepared to part with Richarlison if one of the world’s best players was on the other end of the offer.

โ€œI don’t want to say anything but with Barcelona you can also do an exchange, no? They have a lot of fantastic players but I’m not nominating anyone!” he laughed.

โ€œEverything can happen in football. If an offer arrives that you cannot refuse, and it is an offer that can improve the squad, then why not? But, now, I can say Richarlison is an important part.

“Richarlison renewed his contract one month ago. I was not here when he renewed but the fact that he renewed made me happy because he’s a fantastic player.

Carlo Ancelotti,Richarlison
โ€œHe can play everywhere. He’s a modern striker in my opinion. He can play left, right, back or as one central striker. Technically he can improve but his movement is really good, his heading his fantastic, I was surprised, and he has a lot of power in his legs.

โ€œHe is a really complete striker but technically I think he can improve. In the control and in the controlling movement he can improve. This is the target with him. Individually the control has to be better.

Europe: Ancelotti seeks Everton’s return.

…one of the greatest

Carlo Ancelotti has set his sights on taking Everton back into European competition after the Italian was appointed manager of โ€œone of the greatest clubs in Englandโ€.

Saturday saw the Merseyside team announce that Ancelotti had become their new permanent manager on a four-and-a-half year contract.

The 60-year-old then watched from the stands at Goodison Park as Everton played out a goalless draw with Arsenal, who have appointed former Toffees favourite Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

โ€œIโ€™m excited to be here at one of the greatest clubs in England,โ€ Ancelotti told the clubโ€™s in-house TV channel in his first interview since his appointment.

The draw with Arsenal left Everton 15th in the Premier League and just four points above the relegation zone.

Nevertheless Ancelotti, a three-time Champions League winning coach who was sacked by Napoli this month, said Everton should aim high.

โ€œThe ambition is for us to try to win and be competitive,โ€ he added.

โ€œThe goal is there to reach the Champions League or Europa League. Winning honours has to be the dream for this club and for the supporters. I am here to try to do this.โ€

Ancelotti guided Chelsea to a league and FA Cup double in 2010 in his first spell in England.

โ€œOur goal is to be competitive in the Premier League, to be towards the top of the table, to be competitive in Europe,โ€ he said.

โ€œItโ€™s not going to happen straight away, but we have to work for this.

โ€œTo Evertonians I would like to say, stay with the team as you always do because itโ€™s really important for the players to have your support.

โ€œI would like to work together with the supporters. My dream is to bring success to this club.โ€

Ferguson to stay at club
Meanwhile Everton chairman Bill Kenwright congratulated the clubโ€™s majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, for bringing in a manager of Ancelottiโ€™s standing.

The Italianโ€™s trophy-laden CV includes stints at a clutch of Europeโ€™s top clubs, including Juventus, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

โ€œI have to take my hat off to Farhad,โ€ said Kenwright.

โ€œWe interviewed a lot of people and Farhad was pushing for a world-class manager.

โ€œHe wants this team to be where heโ€™s wanted it to be for three-and-a-half years. He wants this club to be winning trophies.โ€

Caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson will remain on Ancelottiโ€™s staff.

The former Everton striker oversaw a win over Chelsea, draws with Manchester United and Arsenal and a League Cup loss on penalties to Leicester in his four-game spell at the helm following the sacking of Marco Silva.

Ancelottiโ€™s first game in charge of Everton is set to be the Boxing Day clash at home to Burnley.

Ancelotti, who recently quit Napoli, will attend todayโ€™s Premier League match against Arsenal at Goodison as a spectator with the Clubโ€™s Owner and Chairman prior to meeting the players and taking up his new role from Sunday.

Ancelottiโ€™s first match in the dugout will be the visit of Burnley to Goodison Park on Boxing Day, the club announced.

That is something that appeals to me as a manager and I am thrilled at the prospect of being able to work with everybody at the Club to help make that vision a reality.

โ€œI have seen from the performances in the last two weeks that the players are capable of so much. The work Duncan has done is a great credit to him.

Ancelotti to be confirm manager of Everton before arsenal match.

Carlo Ancelotti will be confirmed as Everton’s new manager before the start of the weekend, but will not be in the dugout for their Premier League clash with Arsenal at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Since relieving Marco Silva of his duties following the Toffees’ 5-2 defeat to Liverpool, Duncan Ferguson has been placed in temporary charge and led the club to four points from clashes with Chelsea and Manchester United.

Despite overseeing an upturn in form, the Scot looks set to return to his previous role in the coaching staff by Ancelotti, who recently became a free agent following his dismissal by SSC Napoli.

A number of candidates were touted for the Merseyside hotseat, but the three-time Champions League winning Italian is set to win the chase after Sky Sports revealed he is to be confirmed as the new man at the helm before the weekend.

Despite his confirmation to take place before their visit of Arsenal, it will be Ferguson who leads the team out at Goodison Park with Ancelotti to be officially presented to the media on Monday. Corriere Dello Sport claim that the deal in question will run until 2024, with his son Davide joining as part of his backroom staff.

It will mark a real coup on behalf of the Toffees once the 60-year-old is instilled, who boasts an impressive CV having won four league titles in four different countries, including the Premier League title during his spell with Chelsea.

A mini-resurgence has taken place under Ferguson, but the task at hand for Ancelotti stretches beyond the previous two matches. Both the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons saw the Toffees finish eighth in the top-flight, but a dismal start to the current campaign has seen Everton languish dangerously above the relegation places.

Prior to Ferguson’s interim stint, Silva had guided the club to just four wins from their opening 15 league matches, this despite signing seven players over the summer transfer window.

Coincidentally, they face and Arsenal side on Saturday who are set to appoint their own new manager. Mikel Arteta will be in the dugout prior the the crucial clash, in what will be an engrossing encounter for both incoming bosses.

Update – Why Carlo Ancelotti isn’t the best coach for Everton.

It’s not hard to see why Everton fans are so enamoured with the idea of Carlo Ancelotti being their manager.

Carletto – as he is more affectionately known – has a trophy cabinet that envies any manager in history. The guy has won three Champions Leagues, four domestic league titles and a spate of personal honours for goodness sake, why on earth wouldn’t the ambitious Toffees go for him?

As well as his impressive list of triumphs, the 60-year-old speaks perfect English and has enjoyed Premier League success in the past – securing Chelsea a league and FA Cup double during the 2009/10 campaign.

Chelsea’s Italian manager Carlo Ancelott
He also comes with a glowing list of recommendations from some of the best players in the history of the game. Fabio Cannavaro, David Beckham, John Terry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paolo Maldini and an endless list of others have all lavished praise on Ancelotti in the past.

However, Carletto is not the man that Everton need right now.

To explain why, it is first necessary to examine what has made Ancelotti such a success in his managerial career.

In an era where all the top coaches seem to have a distinct tactical identity, the Italian has maintained a high level of pragmatism in this area, instead relying on his world class communication skills to get the best out of his team.

FBL-EUR-C1-BAYERN MUNICH-REAL MADRID
Another nickname bestowed on Ancelotti during his career is the ‘Diva Whisperer’ due to his superhuman ability to massage the egos of some pretty challenging superstar footballers.

Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich – possibly the five most intimidating dressing rooms for a manager to face. The fact that Ancelotti has been able to operate in each of them without, generally speaking, making many enemies is quite remarkable and testament to his motivational abilities.

There are literally tens of quotes I could have chosen to illustrate this point but I feel this soundbite from Michael Ballack (via FourFourTwo from Omnisport), who worked with the Diva Whisperer at Stamford Bridge, best sums up the Italian’s management style.

Chelsea’s Italian manager Carlo Ancelott
“He has it all, the complete package. He has authority, experience, and is a global player. He has a connection to his players to generate a warm atmosphere. No matter the performance of the club, whether it is good or bad, he always finds a way to get a player back on track.”

The ultimate footballing communicator then? What are waiting for Everton, sign him up. Well… hold fire for now.

As much as Ancelotti’s man-management is impressive, a man of his highly-specific skill set is simply not suited to the colossal rebuilding job that is required at Goodison Park.

Throughout his career so far, Carletto has acted as unifying force, tempering discord in a talented dressing room and generally providing welcome relief from a far more tactically and psychologically demanding manager.

Arriving at Chelsea and Real Madrid to pick up the pieces from Josรฉ Mourinho’s tenure at both clubs and replacing Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, Ancelotti’s comparably laid-back approach initially gained good results.

At Bayern though, reports emerged that the players – who were initially thankful for the dip in intensity – began to organise secret training sessions as they become frustrated with his relaxed demeanour. Instances such as this raise questions as to whether the Italian’s laid-back approach is capable with the modern game’s desire for as much information and preparation as possible.

At Everton, Ancelotti has a team lacking in direction and talent who will simply not benefit from his laid-back approach.

What the Toffees need right now is an intense and committed individual, equipped to develop a coherent style and approach for the club to adopt – not just someone who Richarlison can refer to as ‘Uncle Carlo’ in the media.

Ancelotti is also ill-equipped to head up Everton’s recruitment drive. Over several transfer windows, the Toffees have made a string of underwhelming signings with Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean the latest names to add to the ‘expensive mistakes pile’ alongside Cenk Tosun and Davy Klaassen.

The club are supposedly planning a significant remoulding of the side in the summer in what could potentially be Ancelotti’s first transfer window at a non-elite club since the start of his career. Is he really the man to help director of football Marcel Brands to attract the type of young, hungry player that the club needs to develop? A report linking the Toffees with a 38-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic would suggest not.

FBL-EUR-C1-PSG-PRESSER
Overall, Ancelotti is very good at what he does. It’s just a shame that what he does is a million miles away from what Everton need doing right now.

What Everton need is a younger, more exciting coach who can shape a club that is lacking in long-term vision and identity, in their image. Sorry Carlo, that’s just not you mate.

5-2: Everton coach, Silva sacked

…after humiliating defeat to liverpool

Everton have sacked Marco Silva after the club suffered an humiliating 5-2 defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby which left them 18th in the Premier League Table.

The decision to sack the Portuguese manager comes just minutes after Everton owner Farhad Moshiri had a meeting this evening with the players and Marco Silva, who won just four of their 15 Premier League matches this season, losing nine. Although, Silva, who joined the club in May 2018, led Everton to an eighth-place finish last season’

In a statement issued via the club’s Twitter page, the club announced that: ‘Everton Football Club can confirm that manager Marco Silva has left the club.

Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiti, chairman Bill Kenwright and the board of directors would like to thank Marco for his service over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future.

Duncan Ferguson has taken temporary charge of the first team and will manage the side for the game against Chelsea on Saturday.

The club aims to confirm a new permanent manager as swiftly as possible.’

David Moyes is expected to make a sensational return to Everton, six years after leaving the club for Manchester United.
