Erik ten Hag reacts to Jadon Sancho’s Manchester United return.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has backed Jadon Sancho to become an important player for the club once more following his long-awaited return to action on Wednesday night.

Sancho came off the bench to a rapturous reception at Old Trafford to contribute to United’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest to cement their place in the Carabao Cup final later this month.

The 22-year-old hadn’t featured since October before that, with initially illness and then concerns over fitness and also his mental wellbeing keeping him out of the team.

But Sancho showed even in flashes against Forest, playing an important role in the move that made the second goal for Fred, that he has the quality to make an impact.

“He already showed that [he can be a decisive player],” Ten Hag said afterwards.

“This season for instance, the game against Liverpool was a great goal. He scored against Leicester. He had some really good games, Spurs as well, so he already showed his great capabilities.”

Sancho is yet to consistently perform to those standards in a United shirt since his 2021 transfer from Borussia Dortmund, although he has faith from the boss and time remains on his side.

“He has really high standards,” Ten Hag continued. “He has great capabilities to contribute to our team and the team is improving, we are playing more in the opponent’s half and his capabilities are coming more to the fore. He can act on them more and have more touches on the ball and that gives him the best platform to perform.

“It is always important that players enjoy football because that gives energy and also the motivation to act and to perform.

“The reception from the fans to him was great and that will give him even more a push to continue in the way he is now acting. He has just started again, he is back in Carrington, and hopefully he can keep that and really contribute to the team because when he is in form, he is important to us.”

Erik ten Hag calls for patience as Man Utd await Jadon Sancho return.

Advertisements

Erik ten Hag has warned fans that Manchester United will not be rushing Jadon Sancho back to action, calling for patience as they work with the England international away from the spotlight.

The 22-year-old has not played for United since October and, after missing out on a spot at the World Cup, has since been placed on an individual training regime which has included brief involvements in group sessions.

While Ten Hag has been crying out for attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window, he stressed that rushing Sancho back to competitive action is not under consideration and no time frame has been put on his return.

“I would like to have Jadon back as soon as possible, but I can’t force this process,” Ten Hag said. “I will do everything that’s in my power but some processes you can’t force and this is one of them.

“I also have to show patience although I don’t have patience because we have a lack of opportunities in the front line, players who are available and capable to contribute not only in the Premier League but on the highest standard in football.

“Jadon is one who, when he is fit, he will contribute and we will have an extra option and so we have more chance to win a lot of games.”

Asked for an update on Sancho’s condition, Ten Hag admitted he has seen improvements from the winger but confessed he is not yet ready for competitive action.

“With the physical, there’s also a connection of mental,” Ten Hag continued. “I think he’s now making good progress on the physical part and that will help him.

“I hope he can return quickly but I can’t say how long it will be. In this moment, he is not fit enough, no.

“We have some hurdles to take. I think he’s (heading) in a good direction. I can’t force this process so I don’t do. I would be really happy in the moment if he returned in the squad for team training, that’s the next step.”

The United boss added: “Football players are not robots. No one is the same, I think for everyone you need an individual approach.

“Sometimes it’s good to go away from the place where you’re at daily and to get a new fight and spirit. People have a different approach and that can give you the right push to get back on track.”

Manchester United still on goalkeeping targets; De Gea sinks.

Manchester United have scouted Porto and Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa at least half a dozen times this season as Erik ten Hag considers his long-term options to be the club’s number one, 90min understands.

Ten Hag and United’s decision makers have a big choice to make in goal over the coming months, with current number one David de Gea out of contract in June 2023.

Watch Video Here

United have an option to extend the Spaniard’s contract by a further year but the decision to proceed on that is complicated by De Gea’s salary, which sits among the club’s most expensive contracts at around £375,000 a week. Long-term concerns over De Gea’s capability to adapt to Ten Hag’s system mean he may no longer justify the earnings.

De Gea is open to renegotiating his deal to extend on reduced terms, but as it stands United are considering all options on the table as well as looking at alternatives. Costa is among them, though United’s potential task of signing the player became more difficult this week as the 23-year-old signed an extension to his contract with Porto until 2027 – with a raised release clause of €75m.

Watch Video Here

Such a move would come at great expense to United and they are also known to be targeting additions at right back and at centre forward in 2023, while central midfield remains an area in need of strengthening, while already having overspent on their summer budget in 2022.

United scouts are understood to be pushing the idea of pursuing Costa to decision makers, and he does fit the bill of a modern day goalkeeper – which both Liverpool with Alisson and Manchester City with Ederson have justified in recent years – capable of strong reflexes and distribution. Costa has also become renowned for his incredible record of saving penalties.

The club are understood to be in quandary of how to proceed in goal, with 90min learning that Ten Hag is falling for De Gea’s work ethic and presence around Carrington and on the pitch. De Gea made a miraculous double save during Thursday’s win over Real Sociedad and also earned United three points in the win over West Ham on Sunday, with outstanding saves from Kurt Zouma and Declan Rice.

United also have Dean Henderson, who has long eyed the club’s first choice goalkeeping slot, out on loan with Nottingham Forest at present and are due to make a decision on him upon his return at the end of the season, while Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak has long been admired.

Ronaldo ready to start – Erik Ten Hag.

Advertisements

Manchester United manager, Erik Ten Hag, has said Cristiano Ronaldo is “ready to start” in the majority of their games this season.

After intense transfer speculation linking him with a summer exit, Ronaldo has found himself starting games from the bench.

However, Ten Hag believes the 37-year-old is now fully match fit and ready to start regularly for the Red Devils.

Speaking ahead of a Europa League group stage opener against Real Sociedad, Ten Hag said: “He [Ronaldo] started against Brentford, then not since, but he is ready to start.

“Of course [he can start for the majority of games].”

Erik ten Hag conference: Tuchel sacking, Ronaldo’s rotation, Rashford contract.

Advertisements

Erik ten Hag has spoken to the media ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League group stage opener against Real Sociedad.

United have bounced back superbly from their disastrous beginning to the new season, winning their last four matches – including landmark victories against Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Red Devils get their European campaign underway on Thursday evening. Here’s what Ten Hag had to say at his pre-match press conference.

Thomas Tuchel
What are your thoughts on Chelsea sacking Thomas Tuchel?
“I feel sorry, but there is nothing I can say. It’s Chelsea, not Man United. It’s early in the season, yes.”

Cristiano Ronaldo & rotation
Will Cristiano Ronaldo return to the starting lineup?
“He started against Brentford, then not since, but he is ready to start. Of course [he can start for the majority of games].”

What are your plans for Europa League rotation?
“We have to win every game. We want to win every tournament, so we take everything seriously. We not only have a team, we have a squad, but we have to win every game and that is the mentality Manchester United needs.

“Maybe I can not keep them all happy every game, but everyone gets the game time if they perform well – quite clear. As I’ve said, we need everyone, we have a lot of games to cover.”

What’s the mood like in the squad?
“It’s always difficult when you lose games, the mood is not the same, but we always come here every day to give 100%, to get better in every aspect and that we can be, obviously after Brentford we had a full week to prepare for a game we knew would be difficult. We won it, it’s in the past now, we want to focus on tomorrow and do the same things every game.”

Marcus Rashford
What have you made of Marcus Rashford’s return to form?
“Once again, it’s difficult for me to talk about the past. What I see is a happy Marcus Rashford. We worked really hard the last two months with him on different aspects. He likes it, he wants to transfer it to the pitch. It started with happiness, he comes in every day, he enjoys it, he’s smiling, a really positive vibe, and if you put all of those things together – like the way of play – and you are happy, you will contribute more to the team.”

Does Rashford plan to sign a new contract?
“Definitely. I don’t think he’s out of contract and I think United control the situation.”

Man United set to sign Ivan Toney as Ronaldo files transfer request.

Advertisements

Manchester United could be set to sign Ivan Toney this summer, according to the UK Mirror.

Toney is also attracting attention from other Premier League sides like Leeds, Newcastle United and West Ham.

Last season, the 26-year-old netted 14 times and provided six assists.

Toney played for six months with Christian Eriksen’s last campaign, but the Denmark international has sealed a move as a free agent to United.

However, United’s decision to step up their interest to sign Toney could depend on the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial.

Ronaldo has already submitted a transfer request at Old Trafford and is yet to report for preseason training under Erik ten Hag.
The 37-year-old is not happy with the club’s transfer activity and also wants to play Champions League football.

Martial went to Sevilla on loan in January and could still leave the Red Devils ahead of next season.

Bayern Munich reiterate that they will not sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Advertisements

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has again insisted that the club will not be signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, despite star striker Robert Lewandowski edging closer to a move away from Bavaria.

As reported by Noble Reporters’ known Media, Barcelona have agreed a €50m deal with Bayern for Lewandowski’s services, with La Blaugrana hoping to have the transfer agreed by the end of the weekend.

The Poland international’s departure would leave Die Roten with a sizeable void up front, and they have been linked with Ronaldo recently.

However, once again, those at the top of the club have definitively ruled out the Manchester United forward joining Bayern this summer.

“I have a lot of respect for Cristiano Ronaldo, his successes and his career. But once again: That was and is not a topic for us,” Salihamidzic told Sport.

Noble Reporters Media understands that Ronaldo has asked for United to consider any reasonable offers for his services this summer. Chelsea, Bayern and Napoli were initially contacted over a possible move, but the pool of interested parties is shrinking.

United manager Erik ten Hag has also insisted that he wants Ronaldo to remain at the club this season.

Steve McClaren back at Man United as assistant coach

Advertisements

Manchester United announced on Monday that Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag had been appointed as assistant coaches to new manager Erik ten Hag.

It marks a return to Old Trafford for former England boss McClaren, who worked under Alex Ferguson at United from 1999 to 2001, while Van der Gaag has spent the past year as Ten Hag’s number two at Ajax.

United manager Ten Hag, due to be unveiled later Monday, said he was excited about the next stage in his career despite the enormity of the task on his hands.

The club, without silverware since 2017, limped to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League after finishing second the previous season.

“I really look forward to doing this job, at this club with massive history, and we want to restore it where it belongs,” said Ten Hag.

He added: “First of all, we want to make the fans proud. Second, of course we are in this moment, the current situation is obviously not that good. It’s a big challenge.

“I want to build and construct a team who are battling for each other, who are unified and who will get results. Also we are playing in the Theatre of Dreams.

“We want to entertain. But in the end, the intention is to play fantastic football. If we can’t play fantastic football, we still have to win.”

Ten Hag confirmed pre-season would begin on June 27 as the Dutchman looks to shape United’s squad in his image.

“(We must) accept the current situation but also know one year ago, this club, this team was second in the Premier League,” he said. “There’s potential and now it’s up to us to get that out.

“It’s a process, it will take time, but I’m convinced we will come to that point where we get success.”

Rashford’s Manchester United future rest on Erik Ten Hag’s decision.

Advertisements

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is waiting to speak with new manager Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff before making a decision on his long-term future, 90min understands.

Rashford, a United academy product, has struggled at Old Trafford this season in line with the club’s poor form in the Premier League, and has more recently lost his place in the team altogether under interim manager Ralf Rangnick – even being overlooked and unused in United’s 3-0 with over Brentford on Monday night.

The 24-year-old has also lost his place in the England squad, and with a World Cup on the horizon in November is in danger of missing out on a place in the travelling party.

Rashford would like to remain at United in the long term, but has been left frustrated by the last few seasons at the club. He is understood to be one of the players unsure of Ten Hag’s appointment, given Rangnick’s influence in the decision, but he is willing to hold talks with the Dutchman before deciding on his next move.

The player is aware of interest in his services from a host of clubs, with Arsenal one team keeping track as they look to sign a new striker in the summer. Interest from abroad is however understood to be even stronger, with both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain making it clear they would be interested should he become available for sale.

Interest from Newcastle United also cannot be ruled out. The club are open to making a statement signing should the right player become available, with Rashford fitting the profile.

Rashford is contracted to United until the summer of 2023, though there is an option for the club to trigger an extension for a further year. 90min understands that United would expect a minimum sale price of £60m should Rashford be allowed to depart.

Erik ten Hag asks Man Utd ‘not to bother him’

Advertisements

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag has told Manchester United officials that they must not contact him during his pre-match preparations with Ajax.

Ten Hag has signed a three-year deal at Old Trafford with the option for a fourth and will take the reins later this summer.

The 52-year-old is looking to bow out at Ajax off the back of a third successive Eredivisie title, with the Amsterdam club sitting four points clear of rivals PSV Eindhoven at the top of the table with just four games remaining.

ESPN report that Ten Hag insisted during negotiations that Man Utd should not ‘bother him’ within 48 hours of Ajax matches, with talks regarding the job taking place earlier this year when the Dutch club were not already preoccupied with their busy schedule.

Erik ten Hag confirmed new Man Utd manager.

Advertisements

Manchester United have confirmed that Erik ten Hag will take over as the club’s next permanent manager, following the conclusion of the current season.

Ten Hag has now been established for some time as the club’s chosen replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked following a poor run of form last November. Ralf Rangnick replaced the Norwegian as interim boss for the remainder of the campaign while United conducted a thorough search for their next long-term boss.

After speaking with a number of candidates, most recently including Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino, United have chosen Ten Hag – who has won two Eredivisie titles with Ajax since joining in December 2017 – and is on course to win a third championship in the coming weeks.

Ten Hag has signed a deal until June 2025 – with an option for a further year – at Old Trafford, and will be key to making decisions on a squad rebuild that is desperately needed this summer.

A club statement read: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Erik ten Hag as Men’s First Team Manager, subject to work visa requirements, from the end of this season until June 2025, with the option to extend for a further year.”

On the decision to appoint Ten Hag, John Murtough said: “During the past four years at Ajax, Erik has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe, renowned for his team’s attractive, attacking football and commitment to youth.

“In our conversations with Erik leading up to this appointment, we were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for returning Manchester United to the level we want to be competing at, and his drive and determination to achieve that.

“We wish Erik the best of luck as he focuses on achieving a successful end to the season at Ajax and look forward to welcoming him to Manchester United this summer.”

Ten Hag’s current assistant at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag, will also move to United to assume a similar role, Noble Reporters Media understands.

Rangnick lauds Ronaldo, says new manager would decide his future.

Advertisements

Ralf Rangnick lauded Cristiano Ronaldo as the “difference-maker” for Manchester United, but added that a new manager will have a say over his long-term future at the club after his hat-trick against Norwich on Saturday.

The Red Devils have largely underachieved this season but another treble from Ronaldo against the Canaries ensured their top-four hopes remain alive, with both Tottenham and Arsenal losing on Saturday.

United were poor once again and required Ronaldo to bail them out of trouble, with the Portugal international netting a free kick to win the game 15 minutes from time.

When asked whether Ronaldo would have a future under the next manager, interim boss Rangnick said it wasn’t down to him.

“This is in the end not my decision,” he said. “Cristiano has got another year of contract. This will be a decision for the new manager to take, together with the board.

“Again, he showed against Tottenham and today’s game, that he can be the difference-maker, in moments like this, in games like this, and it is no coincidence he has the best goalscoring record of all players in history. He showed that again today.”

Erik ten Hag is expected to take over in the summer, having impressed with Ajax. He will lead a club rebuild, with the futures of many players at Old Trafford uncertain.

One player who will definitely be leaving is Nemanja Matic, who has already confirmed the time is right for him to move on in the summer.

Erik ten Hag close to finalising agreement with Manchester United.

Advertisements

Erik ten Hag is close to finalising terms to become Manchester United’s new permanent manager, sources have confirmed to Noble Reporters’ known Media.

Ten Hag emerged as United’s first choice last week, as 90min confirmed, and talks began over sealing his long-term contract with the Old Trafford giants. Current club Ajax will not stand in his way.

However, Ajax have told Ten Hag’s representatives and their United counterparts that they want the situation finalised sooner rather than later – and that could mean the finishing touches are put on the deal this week.

Noble Reporters Media confirmed last week that United’s plan on having their new manager confirmed by Easter was on course, and sources on both sides insist that remains the case.

However, Ajax face PSV Eindhoven in the KNVB Cup final this coming weekend, and the club are anxious for the situation around Ten Hag to not prove a distraction around such a crucial fixture.

Sources close to Ten Hag’s camp insist that they are not making any huge or unusual demands and that they are pleased with how talks are progressing – insisting it is only finer details that are being “ironed out”. They also dismissed claims that the 52-year-old is looking to take control of huge parts of the club – including transfers.

They insist that Ten Hag believes the sporting director – or similar in United’s case – model is the best way forward for the club, though the Dutchman is expected to be consulted on any major deals. Crucially, United do not have an issue with this.

One area for discussion is the role of both technical director Darren Fletcher and current interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who was offered a consultancy role when being appointed initially late last year. Ten Hag has no issue with either Fletcher or Rangnick, but wants more detail of how they fit into the system and their involvement going forward.

Talks between Ten Hag and United are due to take place early this week, and there is real hope and optimism that they will finalise the agreement by the weekend. Though that does not necessarily mean that pen is put to paper at that stage.

Reports over the weekend suggested Bundesliga side RB Leipzig had rivalled United for Ten Hag’s signature, though German sources do not believe that a change is likely at the Red Bull Arena. Leipzig only appointed Domenico Tedesco as Jesse Marsch successor earlier this season and are pleased with progress since, as they challenge for third place in German’s top tier.

Louis van Gaal warns Erik ten Hag off joining Manchester United.

Advertisements

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has warned Erik ten Hag that he should not join Manchester United because they are ‘not a football club’.

United have interviewed Ten Hag on their search for a new manager and are considering handing him the same spot in the Old Trafford dugout that Van Gaal called his own between 2014 and 2016.

Van Gaal’s time at United is not remembered particularly fondly by fans, despite his success in the 2015/16 FA Cup final – his final game before he was abruptly sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Now at the helm of the Dutch national team, Van Gaal claimed that the taking the United job would not be in Ten Hag’s best interests.

“Erik ten Hag is a great coach and that is always good for Manchester United,” he told a press conference. “But Manchester United are a commercial club, so it’s a difficult choice for a coach. He should go to a football club instead.”

Van Gaal continued: “I’m not going to tell him what to do. He can call me himself. Sometimes we talk to each other. But he must choose a football club and not a commercial club.”

Ten Hag is one of United’s top targets to assume control of the first team in the summer alongside Mauricio Pochettino, who is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season after an underwhelming season which will almost certainly still yield the Ligue 1 title.

Manager role: Man Utd interviews Erik Ten Hag – Mauricio Pochettino to follow.

Manchester United have started the interview process as they look to appoint a new manager, and first to speak to the club formally was Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, 90min has learned.

United’s managerial search has been intensifying in recent weeks with football director John Murtough leading the process, and club chief executive Richard Arnold will make the official announcement once it is approved by the Glazer family.

Murtough and his staff, including current interim boss Ralf Rangnick, have been doing homework on the leading candidates for around a month, which has seen Ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino emerge as the leading candidates.

Ten Hag is believed to have held talks on Monday, and is due to be followed by Pochettino this week. Also scheduled to talk to the club are Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui and Spain national coach Luis Enrique.

Lopetegui and Enrique are seen as outsiders at this stage, but Arnold insisted that the search was thorough and Murtough is showing that with the fact they are talking to four high-calibre candidates.

Sources have informed 90min that United are looking to make a decision within the next two weeks, during the international break. And even if that decision is not officially communicated, internally it will be known and decided upon.

United feel it is important to make a decision as soon as possible, so that the club can progress with their plans for next season and beyond.

As Noble Reporters Media revealed earlier this month, Ten Hag has impressed United during the vetting process and is widely considered the favourite for the role. Pochettino, however, is someone with a number of admirers within corridors of power at Old Trafford and ‘should not be discounted’ from the battle for the manager’s role.

Both Pochettino and Ten Hag have 15 months left on their current contracts with Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax respectively.

United are looking for their next permanent manager having parted with former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last November, appointing Rangnick as interim boss to succeed him in the short term with a view to making a longer term appointment ahead of the 2022/23 season. Rangnick himself is set to remain with the club in a consultancy role.

Manchester United sights Erik ten Hag as search for manager continues.

Advertisements

Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino remain the top candidates to become Manchester United’s next manager, despite reports of interest in Carlo Ancelotti earlier this week.

United are hopeful of putting a new long-term manager in place ahead of next season, with internal commitment to a fresh project and direction under recently-appointed chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough.

Noble Reporters Media understands Arnold has instructed Murtough to assess all options in the hunt for a new long-term boss – Luis Enrique, Brendan Rodgers, Graham Potter and Ancelotti have all been linked in some form – but all signs continue to point to either Pochettino or Ten Hag as the best fit as it stands.

Lines of communication with prospective new managers have been opened via intermediaries as United plan ahead, and Ten Hag in particular is impressing due to his work with Ajax.

The Dutchman has led Ajax to two Eredivisie titles, and his team are currently top of the league this term – conceding seven goals in 24 matches, and scoring a mammoth 71.

Ten Hag memorably guided Ajax to within a whisker of the Champions League final in 2019, losing late on to Pochettino’s Tottenham in the last four, but has rebuilt the team impressively after a number of key players were sold on following that run. Ajax won six out of six group games in this season’s edition, and are well placed to progress to the quarter finals.

Advertisements

United are impressed with Ten Hag’s style of play and the ability he’s shown to not only deal with academy prospects, but big talents from abroad too. Noble Reporters Media reported last month that United’s interest in Brazilian forward Antony was set to intensify, and Ten Hag has played a key role in bringing the 22-year-old to prominence.

Some at United also like how Ten Hag holds himself off-field, and though not the youngest prospect around at 52, United see his maturity as a plus point. There’s also scope for him to be the long-term appointment they crave should everything go to plan.

Ten Hag’s intermediaries have made sure United are well versed on his situation and future plans – Ajax are aware he is ready to move on at the end of the season and there has been little to no push back from the club over the last six months. Ten Hag, too, is aware of what United are looking for and has interest in the project.

The final decision on the next manager is understood to be down to Murtough, though he is set to lean on his staff and confidants to get the decision right. One such confidant is Rangnick, who he has grown closer to in the last few months.

Rangnick will lead United into the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon, as they chase a spot in the top four against Premier League leaders City.

Since Guardiola left Barcelona have won the Champions League just once in eight seasons, with Messi winning the Ballon d’Or two times in that timeframe – though Barca have won La Liga five times during that span.

Ten Hag believes that during Guardiola’s reign, Messi was able to be more of a team player and under subsequent coaches, the Argentine has seen his level dip at times below where it was under the Spaniard’s reign.

“Messi was one of the leaders, but he also worked for the team and excelled as a result. He has never been as good as under Guardiola,” Ten Hag told Voetbal International.

Then

“Barcelona has not won much in European terms in recent years either.

“Messi still excels, but now also occasionally goes through the lower limit. It was never like that under Guardiola.

“Pep has guts, he dares to be pioneering and innovative.”
