DSS reacts to reports of poisioning Nnamdi Kanu in detention.

In line with this claim, IPOB accused DSS of secretly and systematically trying to kill Kanu by denying him access to his medical doctors.

However, an operative of DSS who spoke exclusively with DAILY POST on the ground of anonymity, said Kanu is being treated well.

He said: “Nnamdi Kanu can’t be denied access to his doctors, and what is happening to him is political. Even if the prisoner is a hardened criminal, we treat him well, so Kanu’s case is not different.

“There is no truth in the claim that DSS is poisoning Kanu; it’s all a lie – he has access to his doctors. However, he has his medical issues, but he is not denied access to his doctors.

Alleged terrorism hosting: Experts raise flag over DSS, Emefiele rumoured fight.

Advertisements

Economic experts have warned the Department of State Services, DSS, and politicians against throwing Nigeria’s economy into further woes over alleged terrorism charges against the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

On Monday, Nigerians woke up to hear a Coalition of National Interest Defenders, in the full glare of the media, claim that the DSS is orchestrating plans to arrest and remove the CBN Governor.

The coalition made the allegation during a press conference in Abuja by its Coordinator, Tochukwu Ohazurike.

The group alleged that the DSS filed a suit at the Federal High Court Abuja accusing Emefiele of Terrorism financing.

In reaction to the allegations making the rounds in the media, the country’s secret service said it remained focused on its mandate.

“While professionally discharging its mandate, the DSS pledges to remain focused and unbiased. It will not, by any means, succumb to propaganda, intimidation and the desperation of hirelings to undermine it. It will also not give room to the use of falsehood and deceit to misdirect public understanding and perceptions of issues of national importance”, a statement to DAILY POST by DSS’s spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya, said.

Meanwhile, a crowd of protesters with placards stormed the streets of Abuja demanding the sack of the DSS Director General, Mr Yusuf Bichi.

DSS acting script over Emefiele’s removal – Idakolo

Reacting to the development in a chat on Monday, a financial inclusion/wealth management expert, Mr Idakolo Gbolade said if the allegation is true, the DSS’s move is politically motivated.

He explained that the secret service is acting on a script to witch-hunt Emefiele over his perceived anti-establishment monetary policies in recent times.

“If the alleged arrest plot is confirmed, then it can be assumed to be politically motivated. I want to believe it is not valid.

“However, from the body language of the National Assembly and Political parties, it seems they are against the withdrawal limit. In the past few months, The CBN’s policies regarding Naira redesign, withdrawal limits, etc., have been seen targeting political moneybags that have stored up enough cash for the upcoming elections, which will significantly disrupt their plans. From an economic point of view, these policies are necessary for the economy and to safeguard our elections’ sanctity.

“If the claim by the group is confirmed, then the DSS will be acting on a script because most of the funds seized by the DSS might be affected by the CBN policy”, he stated.

Emefiele might have Magu’s treatment if Buhari remains Lukewarm – Prof Oyedokun

Also, an Accounting and Financial Development don at Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof Godwin Oyedokun, said it is challenging to fight fraud without fraud fighting back.

He feared that what happened to the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu, and others might be the case for Emefiele if President Muhammadu Buhari remains lukewarm on the matter.

Oyedokun lamented that Nigerians are no longer concerned about the daily flaws of Buhari’s government in the last seven years.

“In Nigeria, it will be challenging to fight fraud without it fighting back. I am not exonerating the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele if he is guilty; However, the policy carried out by him has the approval of the President and by extension the Nigerian people.

“We need to be extremely careful in this country, especially how politics is played. The President should not be lukewarm on this matter; the same happened to the former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, and the Accountant General of the Federation, Mr Idris Ahmed.

“Nigerians are no longer concerned about the government’s daily flaws; their actions would reflect in the forthcoming election,” he added.

Shameful to see infighting among Buhari’s men – Adebayo

On his part, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Prince Adewole Adebayo frowned at the continuous infighting by Buhari’s team.

“The most dangerous and ridiculous saga I have seen is how CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele is now part of the present political shenanigans instead of paying keen attention to monetary policies. Ongoing theatrical press conference by the Coalition smacks of infighting by the derailed team of the President.

“I have said it not with joy but most regretfully that President Muhammadu Buhari watches his presidency become a stage for paediatric hirelings and mischievous crowd renters who have no merit to be in public office. Now factions of overfed incompetents are dancing naked in the face of hungry Nigerians.

“Nigerians can now see in the open what we have always said that Nigerians are poor and insecure, not because our problems of hunger and insecurity are hard to solve but because there is no proper government focusing on the official agenda. Buhari runs a jungle of rival gangs after their own money”, he posted in his official Twitter handle on Monday.

When DAILY POST contacted CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Nwanisobi Osita to speak on the matter, he said the news came to him the way every Nigerian heard it in the media.

He said, “I heard it the way you heard it, and I am not saying the news is not true”.

He declined to comment further on the matter.

At the moment, one hundred and thirty-three million Nigerians are struggling with multidimensional poverty, battling 21.47 percent of inflation, declining Gross Domestic Product growth rate and insecurity.

Naira-Dollar Rate: DSS probe CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Advertisements

The move by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele may cause a further slip of the naira against the dollar.

In the suit, FHC/ABJ/CS/2255/2022, the security agency asked the Federal High Court in Abuja permission to take Emefiele into custody.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

Justice John Tsoho did not grant the application. The Chief Judge said the DSS did not provide concrete evidence to substantiate its claims against the CBN chief.

Emefiele is accused of terrorism financing and economic crimes, though a coalition claims the plot is to keep him in solitary confinement ahead of the sack.

Since the news broke, Nigerians have been raising their concern about the fate of the naira, which is recovering from a recent free fall.

Though the current dollar-to-naira rate is about N745 on the black market, it nearly hit N900 sometime between October and November.

Individuals and business owners are now contacting Bureau De Change operators to get information on what to expect in the coming days.

Sanni, an operator in Abuja, told DAILY POST that customers called him on Monday to purchase dollars due to uncertainty over Emefiele’s case.

Some social media users have also voiced fear about the naira weakening more due to a loss of confidence.

“Without recourse to the fact before the court, the presiding judge did a good job by denying the application of DSS to arrest Emefiele.

“The consequences of his arrest will be extremely grave on our economy, particularly the value of our currency, naira”, @skelly16th wrote.

It is unknown if the DSS will return to the court with another application and evidence that will convince the judge to approve Emefiele’s arrest, a major topic of debate.

Nigerian businessman, Seun Ogunbambo wanted by EFCC jailed in U.S.

Advertisements

Seun Ogunbambo, a Nigerian businessman indicted for a N1 billion fuel subsidy scam by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment in the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons, court documents obtained by Peoples Gazette showed.

Advertisements

Federal Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein sentenced Mr Ogunbambo in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York after he was found guilty of aggravated theft and use of false information for U.S. passport application.

The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) issued a warrant of arrest for the businessman on November 27, 2019, after he was indicted for federal violations. Mr Ogunbambo had pleaded guilty before the federal judge. He was jailed on October 27, 2020

According to the documents, the oil marketer had falsified identifying information, including names, social security numbers and dates of birth, to apply for U.S. passports under the names Sean Bambo Benson, Sean Roberto Zacchaeus and Darron Roberto Zacchaeus.

Mr Ogunbambo, the managing director of Fargo Petroleum and Gas Limited, committed the offences in the Southern District of New York on June 16, 2016, September 25, 2017, and January 29, 2018, respectively.

He had falsified information to make several renewals of his U.S. passport, initially issued in November 2006 with his true identity at the Worth Post Office in Worth, Illinois.

“The defendant willfully and knowingly made false statements in an application for a passport with the intent to induce and secure the issuance of a passport under the authority of the United States for his own use and the use of another,” said Kevin P. Whelan, the special agent in charge.

“The defendant knowingly did transfer, possess, and use, without lawful authority, a means of identification of another person, during and in relation to a felony violation enumerated in Title 18, United States Code, Section 1028A(c), to wit, Ogunbambo used the personal identification information, including the name, date of birth and Social Security number, of another person in connection with his fraudulent passport applications, as charged in Count One of this Complaint.”

According to the document, he applied for renewal through a courier company on June 6, 2016, using a passport photograph and the information provided at the first issuance, as well as a marriage certificate, to change his name to Darron Roberto Zacchaeus.

On September 25, 2017, Mr Ogunbambo applied for another passport renewal under “Sean Roberto Zacchaeus” using a different social security number. Similarly, another renewal application was made on January 29, 2018, in the name “Sean O’Bambo-Benson.”

The businessman was declared wanted by EFCC in August 2013 for “a case of forgery, use of false documents and fraudulently obtaining the sum of nine hundred and seventy-six million, six hundred and fifty-three thousand, one hundred and ten naira, twenty-eight kobo (976, 653, 110. 28) under the petroleum support fund scheme.”

The Nigerian anti-graft agency declared the businessman and his co-conspirator, Habila Theck, wanted after they failed to appear for his trials at the Lagos State High Court. Mr fled the country.

After the EFCC charged him with fraud, he prayed the court to dismiss the fuel subsidy scam allegations against him on the basis that his right was violated.

The arrests, according to reports, were made by the Department of State Service, DSS and the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army.

In an interview with journalists at the 81 Division headquarters in Kofo Abayomi, Victoria Island, the outgoing General Officer, 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Umar Musa on Tuesday, confirmed that many arrests were made, stating that they were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force.

Maj. Gen Musa, said, “I can’t remember how many impersonators we have arrested. But we still have quite a large number of them.

“When we make arrests we hand them over to the Nigeria Police to do further investigation and prosecute them because we don’t have the power to prosecute.”

Though he did not state if they were bandits, he disclosed that the supplier of the army camouflage to the impersonators had also been arrested

DSS imposes strict measures on Nnamdi Kanu – IPOB cries out.

Advertisements

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Saturday, accused the Department of State Services, DSS, of placing a strict measure on its leader, Nnamdi Kanu in detention.

IPOB said DSS has refused to allow Kanu spend the approved time with his visitors.

Spokesman of IPOB, Emma Powerful, said DSS has restricted Kanu’s time to receive visitors from two hours to 30 minutes.

In a statement he signed, Powerful accused DSS of flouting court orders that allowed Kanu to receive visitors for two hours.

Powerful wondered how Kanu would interact with his lawyers for 30 minutes during permitted visiting days.

He accused the secret police of torturing Kanu psychologically.

The statement reads partly: “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wish to reiterate our displeasure once again over the deliberate, permanent and insidious psychological torture being committed against our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in contravention of UNHRC and all other International Human Rights laws and principles in DSS confinement and torture facilities.

“The DSS agents have continued to flout and violate the existing court orders strictly given by justice Binta Nyako concerning the welfare of Kanu, IPOB leader (High profile prisoner of conscience).

“The global community should take note of the atrocities being perpetrated against our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Nigeria Government and their lawless DSS.

“Kanu is being tortured in DSS dungeon because he spends four days in Solitary confinement and allowed only 30minutes to relate with humans on Mondays and Thursdays. As against the subsisting Court Order that allowed Kanu to stay up to 2 hours with his visitors, DSS no longer allows his visitors to stay with him longer than 30 minutes on each visiting day.

“How do DSS want Kanu’s lawyers to interact with their clients for 30 minutes over ongoing cases? As in the tradition of this Fulani Government and their lawless DSS, the Court approved time has been illegally changed in breach of the Court Order without due process. This flagrant abuse of Court Orders and dehumanization of our Leader is not acceptable and must be stopped going forward.”

Deborah: DSS ran to her rescue, but she was killed anyways – Tambuwal.

Advertisements

Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal on Friday shed more light on the circumstances leading to the killing of Deborah Samuel, saying the mob overpowered the security agents.

Tambuwal disclosed that contrary to a general view, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) tried but could not save the late 200-level student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education.

“Contrary possibly to what you are thinking, the security agencies particularly the DSS, were able to get to the school on time and were actually able to get Deborah rescued from the mob initially,” he told reported as he visited Delta State to continue his presidential campaign.

“As they were mobilising forces from the military barracks, the police command, the mob was growing. As we speak, one of the DSS agents that attempted to save her life is in the hospital with a broken head and the other one had a broken hand.

“They were actually overpowered. It is not as if she was left on her own. There was rescue by the DSS and they were around where she was locked into – a room – because they tried to really save her but unfortunately they were overpowered.”

The governor also debunked reports that security operatives did not respond to the emergency situation in the institution.

When asked whether Sokoto is safe for a visit, the governor explained that normalcy is gradually returning to the north-western state.

His administration, he assured, will ensure that justice is served with the killers prosecuted.

He equally reiterated his condemnation for the murder, warning residents of the state and indeed Nigerians against taking laws into their hands or embracing jungle justice.

This is even as he assured that his state is open for visits by non-indigenes and Nigerians from various parts of the country

DSS stage protest amid plan to cause violence in North-Central.

Advertisements

The Department of State Services on Saturday said it was aware of a plot to incite violence in parts of the country, especially the North-Central.

According to a statement signed by DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya, the aim is to cause ethno-religious crisis and destabilise the country.

The Service also said there were plans to use students and labour unions to organise a massive protest like #EndSARS.

It advised citizens to engage the government only based one existing rules.

“Those who may wish to go contrary to the law will, however, face the consequences,” the DSS said.

See the full statement from the DSS below:

DSS UNCOVERS PLOT FOR VIOLENCE IN THE NORTH CENTRAL ZONE

The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby alerts the public of a sinister plan by some elements to stoke violence in parts of the country particularly the North Central. The aim is to cause ethno-religious crisis, ignite reprisals and heat up the polity. In a bid to achieve this, the sponsors have mobilised foot soldiers and held several meetings in and outside the target areas.

The Service is also aware of a plot to use students, striking University teachers, labour unions, disgruntled individuals and strategic groups as well as exploit the global energy situation to carry out a mass protest like the ENDSARS. This is despite ongoing efforts by Government to address the issues.

While the Service views the machination as unpatriotic, it is on the trail of the agents of destabilisation who are desirous of using violence to achieve ulterior goals. Though it has emplaced measures to disrupt these tendencies, it warns the ring leaders and their cohorts to desist from acts capable of causing a breakdown of law and order. The public should be rest assured that the Service will, in conjunction with other security agencies, go after the sponsors of this scheme and ensure the law takes it course.

Citizens are advised not only to engage according to rules but should resist persuasions to be used to destroy their own country. Those who may wish to go contrary to the law will, however, face the consequences.

Court to rule on Nnamdi Kanu’s request for DSS DG to give oral evidence.

Advertisements

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, fixed March 16 to rule in a motion filed by the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu for the Director-General of the Department of States Services (DSS) to give oral evidence on his state of health.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo fixed the date after counsel for Kanu, Maxwell Opara, and lawyer to the DSS, Idowu Awo, presented their arguments for and against the motion on notice.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Kanu, through his lawyer, Opara, had, in a fundamental rights enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1585/2021, sued the DG of DSS and the office as 1st and 2nd respondents respectively.

Advertisements

He also joined the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) as 3rd respondent in the suit dated and filed Dec. 13, 2021.

Opara had alleged that the health of his client was deteriorating in the DSS custody, among others.

At the resumed hearing, Opara filed a motion on notice dated Feb. 14 and brought pursuant to Section 116 of the Evidence Act.

He argued that there were conflicts in the counter affidavit filed by the DSS and that only oral evidence of the DG and Kanu could clarify the issue.

“We want to call Kanu and director-general of DSS to testify,” he said.

The lawyer said other relevant processes had been filed to raise one question whether the court could transfer the matter to a general cause list to enable it to hear the matter.

He informed that though the 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants had filed their counter-affidavits, he had filed a reply on points of law.

“We urge my lord to allow the parties to call oral evidence in this matter because the applicant complained that a quack doctor from DSS has taken his blood sample about 20 times without bringing forth any medical report,” he said.

He urged the court to grant the application.

But Awo disagreed with Opara.

He argued that while the judge had powers to call oral evidence of parties, Kanu’s lawyer had not shown how the doctors attending to his client were doing “quack” work.

He further argued that merely stating that the medical doctors his office assigned to attend to Kanu were quacks did not amount to conflict.

“It is important to note that the applicant has not denied the above assertion by the respondents neither has he shown by material particulars that the listed medical practitioners are quacks.

“The onus lies on the applicant via a further affidavit,” he said.

He prayed the court to discountenance the application.

“We humbly urge that the application be thrown away and let us go into the substance of the case,” he said.

In the counter-affidavit dated Feb. 24, Awo argued that it was common knowledge that Kanu was currently standing trial on a 15-count charge bothering on terrorism before a sister court.

He also argued that it was common knowledge that Kanu was earlier granted bail by the trial court, presided over by Binta Nyako, but he jumped bail.

He said he was re-arrested and re-arraigned before the judge.

Advertisements

Awo said that there was no court order in existence anywhere “which is to the effect that applicant (Kanu) should have unrestricted access to his personal physician while in the facility of the 1st and 2nd respondents.

“If there is such order, the applicant has the option to produce same in a further affidavit.”

He said that refusal to grant this application would not prejudice Kanu’s case in any way.

The AGF’s lawyer, Simon Enoch, also corroborated Awo’s submission.

He said there was no material conflict in the affidavits of fact submitted before the court.

He prayed the court to reject Opara’s plea.

Justice, Taiwo adjourned the ruling until March 16.

Why DSS DG should be charged for contempt – Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer.

Advertisements

Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, pro-Biafra agitator, Ifeanyi Ejiofor has urged the Federal High Court, Abuja, to charge the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, of alleged contempt of court.

Ejiofor said the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court should endorse the contempt charges filed against the DSS DG.

Advertisements

He noted that failure to endorse the charges would mean the court is taking sides with the secret police.

Ejiofor made the call while lamenting the refusal of the DSS to allow Kanu access to his lawyers twice.

In a statement he issued, Ejiofor said the action of the secret police was contrary to the court ruling.

Advertisements

According to Ejiofor: “With the foregoing, if the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, fails and/or refuses to endorse the relevant contempt forms filed against the Director-General of the DSS for the gross disobedience to positive orders of court, as he has done in the past, then, it will become obvious to the world that the Registrar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, is actively protecting the contemnors.

“Orders of court must be obeyed to the letter and must not only be respected, but must be treated with sanctity. Sadly, this has become a joke taken too far!”

Recall with Noble Reporters Media that Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor had disclosed that the DSS prevented them from having access to their client twice.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is being detained by the DSS.

Kanu has been in detention after he was repatriated to Nigeria from Kenya.

He is facing charges bordering on terrorism before Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court.

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia has approached a High Court of Justice in Plateau State for the enforcement of his fundamental rights to personal liberty and fair hearing.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday in Jos, Mailafia’s legal team said the suit has been filed challenging the letter of invitation.

The legal team is also asking the court to make a judicial pronouncement on the letter.

He described the invitation as an intimidation, harassment, persecution, and witch hunt.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited 10 leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State for an ‘important meeting’.

According to a letter from the security agency, the politicians are to attend the meeting scheduled to hold on Saturday at the DSS Command Headquarters in Benin City, the state capital.

A copy of the letter, dated August 20, 2020, and addressed to one Tony Adun who is also known as Kabakaba, was obtained by Noble Reporters Media on Friday.

While the DSS did not disclose the agenda of the meeting, it is suspected to be in connection to the forthcoming governorship election in Edo.

“I am directed to invite you (Adun) to an important meeting with the State Director of Security,” part of the letter read.

Adun was asked to attend the meeting with the National Chairman of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and eight other leaders of the APC in the state.

They include Ehis Adams – APC Leader in Oredo, Osaro Idahosa – APC Leader in Ikpoba-Okha, and Okunbor Roberts – APC Leader in Ovia South-West LGA.

Others are ‘Atarodo’ – APC member, Kingsley Amedo – APC member, Richard Obe – APC member, Osarobo Idehen – APC member, and Dr Emma – APC member.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had fixed September 19 to conduct the election in Edo State.

In compliance with its Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the election and in accordance with Section 34 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), INEC cleared 14 candidates for the poll on July 18.

The electoral umpire stressed that with the publication of the final list of candidates, no political party can withdraw or substitute any of the nominated candidates, as well as tamper with the list and particulars of the candidates in a manner inconsistent with the intendment of the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
