At least 54 people, including 13 children, were killed in two separate transport tragedies in western Pakistan on Sunday.
Forty-one are so far confirmed dead after their bus crashed into a ravine in southwestern Balochistan province, while at least 10 students died in the boating accident in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said.
As many as three are still missing in the waters, with a rescue operation underway.
At the remote site of the bus crash, north of the city of Bela in the Lasbela district, senior administration official Hamza Anjum said “the dead bodies โฆ are beyond recognition.”
Anjum said 40 corpses were retrieved from the wreck alongside three injured, one of whom died shortly after. The remaining two survivors were in “serious” condition.
The charred brown husk of the vehicle chassis smoked on a dry riverbed under the bridge on Sunday, according to a video released by the provincial government.
A team of men used heavy machinery to move the twisted metal aside and pull out the burnt remains, which were then shrouded in white cloth.
Head of the local rescue service Asghar Ramazan told AFP the bus had been loaded with containers of oil.
“When the bus fell down, it immediately caught fire,” he said. The oil “caused the fire to flare up so much that it was difficult to control,” he added.
The bus was reportedly carrying a total of 48 passengers when it hit a pillar on the bridge and careened off course earlier on Sunday.
It had been traveling overnight between Balochistan’s provincial capital of Quetta and the southern port city of Karachi.
“It is feared that the driver may have fallen asleep,” Anjum said, also mentioning the possibility he had been speeding during the long-distance trip.
“We will investigate the causes of the accident,” he said, adding that DNA tests would be needed to determine the identity of the remains, which had been “badly mutilated”.
‘Rescue underway’ In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, local police official Mir Rauf told AFP all of the drowned so far recovered from the boating accident on Tanda Dam lake were aged between 7 and 14.
A total of 17 were rescued alive from the reservoir by Sunday afternoon.
“Everything was normal until suddenly the boat overturned,” said 11-year-old survivor Muhammad Mustafa from his hospital bed in the nearby city of Kohat.
Ramshackle highways, lax safety measures and reckless driving contribute to Pakistan’s dire road safety record.
Passenger buses are frequently crammed to capacity and seatbelts are not commonly worn, meaning high death tolls from single-vehicle accidents are common.
In November, 20 people, including 11 children, were killed when a minibus crashed into a deep and water-logged ditch in southern Pakistan.
According to World Health Organization estimates, more than 27,000 people were killed on Pakistan’s roads in 2018.
Mass drownings are also common in Pakistan when aged and overloaded vessels lose their stability and pitch passengers into the water.
In July last year, at least 18 women drowned after an overloaded boat carrying about 100 members of the same family capsized during a marriage procession between two villages

The Public Relations Officer for Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident in Kano on Sunday via a press statement, said the Service received a distress call from Na Musa Abdullahi sir Muhd that a toilet digger was trapped in a pit toilet while draining it.
โOn Saturday, January 21, 2023, the state Fire Service control room received an emergency call at about 20:41 hrs from Na Musa Abdullahi sir Muhammad.
He reported an incident at Sabon Gari Market, Layin Abacha, Fagge Local Government Area, when our men arrived at the scene, at about 20:47hrs, they discovered that two biological brothers were working in a public convenience pit toilet and were discovered trapped in a wide deep sock-away while draining the suck-away chamber.โ

Thousands of ambulance workers held another strike across England and Wales on Monday, in escalating industrial action as unions called the government to hold talks on improving pay and conditions.
Ambulance workers began strike action on December 21 last year and further dates are planned for February.
Nurses have also launched unprecedented strike action, reflecting widespread discontent in the state-funded National Health Service whose staff are struggling with soaring living costs.
Mondayโs industrial action comes ahead of mass simultaneous strikes planned for February 6 by unions representing both nurses and ambulance staff.
Unison, the UKโs largest trade union, said up to 15,000 ambulance staff in England would be striking along with 5,000 members at hospitals in Liverpool in northwest England.
Unite said more than 2,600 of its ambulance worker members were striking in England and Wales, following a three-day strike last week.
โWeโre trying to get the government to negotiate,โ Unite general secretary Sharon Graham told BBC radio, accusing the government of inaction.
โItโs been five weeks since Unite ambulance workers were out and in that time there has been literally no meeting about the substantive issue of pay.
โThere are absolutely no pay talks going ahead, itโs wrong to suggest that they are,โ she added, even as Health Secretary Steve Barclay has said discussions were ongoing.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is โmissing in actionโ and โneeds to get more involved,โ she added.
The GMB, whose members at one ambulance service in central England were striking Monday, addressed Barclay in a tweet saying: โWe need to talk pay. Weโre ready when you are.โ
The London Ambulance Service advised people to only call the 999 emergency number in โlife-threateningโ situations and warned the public they โmay be asked to organise transport to hospitalโ.
To avoid any fatal explosion, the Ekiti State Government has ordered the immediate removal and confiscation of a Gas Tanker abandoned at an accident scene at Igede Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government area of the State.
The government also directed security agencies to ascertain the owner of the articulated vehicle conveying the gas-laden tank that has been abandoned since Friday along the Igede-Iyin Road, posing danger to the public.
Handing down the order during a visit to the accident site on Monday, the Deputy Governor, Monisade Afuye, said Governor Biodun Oyebanji was deeply worried by the abandonment of the tank in the residential area for days without action taken to evacuate it.
Afuye, in a statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Victor Ogunje, said the Governorโs expectation was that the owners ought to have evacuated the inflammable substance from the scene a few hours after the accident.
The Deputy Governor said the state government had deployed firefighters to the area in readiness for any eventualities and to be on guard.
She said the removal and confiscation became the best option to prevent the unwarranted loss of precious lives of the people since the owners could not be ascertained as of the time of the visit.
The Deputy Governor also directed the Chairman of the Council, Babatola Ogundana to get another articulated truck and work with other experts to remove the flammable substance from its present scene immediately.
She said, โWe thank God that no explosion accompanied the accident despite the substance being highly flammable. But it was bad for the owners to have left it here for days without thinking of the implications of his action.
โThe Governor was worried, which informed his action that fire fighting truck should be stationed at the scene of the accident because as the tank gets hotter, the possibility of it exploding is very high and that could be dangerous to our people and their property.
Mrs Afuye commended the Council boss for promptly informing the Police and the Department of State Services about the incident, saying the agencies will investigate and unravel the identities of the owners.
In his response, the Council Chairman, Ogundana and the lawmaker representing Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency 1 in the House of Assembly, Femi Akindele, said landlords and motorists had been gripped with fear since the accident occurred last Friday.
Akindele said the truck had the accident while trying to ascend the hilly portion of Igede-Iyin road.
โWe are all worried here. Even the residents and leaders of Igede are worried. They were not really happy that the owners abandoned this dangerous and inflammable substance here for days. To us, this is insensitive and callous

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has enjoined healthcare workers to be vigilant and look out for symptoms of diphtheria by maintaining a high index of suspicion.
Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, Director-General, NCDC, in a public advisory issued on Thursday, assured that the Centre had responded to reports of diphtheria cases in Lagos and Kano States.
According to him, in Osun and Yobe States, the NCDC is also monitoring the situation where cases are now being picked up.
The diphtheria outbreak has so far killed 25 people, with 58 suspected cases and six persons on admission according to data revealed from the Kano State Ministry of Health.
The Director-General of NCDC explained that the disease affects the nose, throat and sometimes, skin of an individual, saying that diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium called Corynebacterium species.

โA thick grey or white patch appears on the tonsils and/or at the back of the throat associated with difficulty breathing, in severe cases, โ he said.
He said that the NCDC is working with State ministries of health and partners to enhance surveillance and response to the outbreak, stressing that there have been laboratory-confirmed cases.
He said people mostly at risk of contracting diphtheria, are children and adults who have not received any or a single dose of the pentavalent vaccine (a diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccine), people who live in a crowded environment, people who live in areas with poor sanitation, healthcare workers and others who are exposed to suspected/confirmed cases of diphtheria.
He further explained that diphtheria spreads easily between people and could be through direct contact with infected people, droplets from coughing or sneezing, and contact with contaminated clothing and objects.
He advised parents to have their children fully vaccinated against diphtheria with three doses of the pentavalent vaccine as recommended in the childhood immunisation schedule in order to stay clear of the disease.
Individuals are advised to isolate themselves and notify the local government area, State Disease Surveillance Officer (DSNO) or the NCDC with signs and symptoms suggestive of diphtheria.
