Hunger kills over 1,900 kids in Ethiopia in single year – Report.

At least 1,900 children under the age of 5 have died from malnutrition in Ethiopia’s embattled Tigray region in the past year, according to a study conducted by regional health officials and seen by The Associated Press.

The deaths were recorded at health facilities across Tigray between June last year and April 1. Western Tigray, which is under the control of forces from the neighboring Amhara region, was not included in the survey.

A doctor involved in the study said the true number of child deaths from malnutrition is likely higher as most families cannot bring their children to health centers because of transportation challenges. Most hunger deaths go unrecorded, he said.

“Because we cannot access most areas, we do not know what is happening on the community level,” said the doctor, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals. “These are simply the deaths we have managed to record in health facilities.”

Since June, Tigray has been cut off from the rest of Ethiopia, when fighters from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, or TPLF, recaptured most of the region as federal forces withdrew.

Banking services, phone lines and road links are all down in the region, a situation the United Nations has said amounts to a “de facto blockade.”

Ethiopian authorities insist there is no deliberate effort to target Tigrayan civilians. They have urged Tigrayan fighters to surrender.

According to U.N. figures, more than 90% of Tigray’s 5.5 million people require humanitarian assistance, including 115,000 severely malnourished children.

Civil servants have not been paid in months. Many have run out of cash to buy food and other goods because banking services have been shut down. The children of families living in urban areas are especially at risk of malnutrition, as their parents don’t have farmland to grow food, Tigrayan health officials say.

Around 700,000 people in Tigray are in the grip of “famine-like conditions” due to the obstruction of aid, U.S. officials estimate.

Ethiopia’s federal government unilaterally declared a surprise “humanitarian truce” on March 24, an announcement it said would allow aid to flow into Tigray. But nearly one month later, only four convoys of around 80 food trucks entered the region.

“Literally nothing has changed,” said an aid worker who recently visited Tigray. “We are just seeing a handful of trucks; these trucks are better than nothing but they are not going to feed the millions of people who need aid (in Tigray).”

An estimated 2,000 trucks of food must enter Tigray every week to meet the region’s needs, a U.N. official said at a meeting in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, on Wednesday, according to the aid worker who attended. That’s a sharp increase from the previous assessment of 600 a week. The aid worker also spoke on the condition of anonymity for safety concerns.

According to U.N. figures, just 3% of the vegetable seeds and 10% of the fertilizer required for the current planting season have reached Tigray, raising fears of a poor harvest that would deepen the region’s hunger crisis.

Some health officials in Tigray say they simply don’t have enough supplies to treat many patients they encounter. Some, who recently spoke to AP, said shortages are so dire that some patients’ relatives must personally buy medicines from private pharmacies at inflated prices and bring them to the hospital before their family members can be treated.

According to estimates by international aid groups, tens of thousands of people have been killed in the war.

But there is little hope for peace talks as Ethiopian authorities have outlawed the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front, effectively making its leaders fugitives on the run.

Politicians and celebrities are paying tribute to the late Supreme Court justice, who died from cancer Friday aged 87.

As word of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death spread on Friday, tributes quickly poured in from celebrities, athletes, and Democrats and Republicans alike.

Donald Trump said Ginsburg, who died at age 87 of complications from metastatic pancreas cancer, “was an amazing woman” who “led an amazing life.”

The US president’s remarks came shortly after a rally in Minnesota where he said one reason the upcoming presidential election is so important is because of possible Supreme Court vacancies.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, also following a campaign stop in Minnesota, called Ginsburg “a beloved figure” and said, “My heart goes out to all those who cared for her and care about her. And she practiced the highest American ideals as a justice, equality and justice under the law, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg stood for all of us.”

In a statement announcing her death, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts said the US had lost “a jurist of historic stature”.

Joe Biden insisted Trump wait until it’s clear who will be the next president before nominating a new justice. “There is no doubt, let me be clear, that the voters should pick the president, and the president should pick the justice for the Senate to consider,” Biden said.

United States Supreme Court Justice and liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg died Friday, opening a crucial vacancy on the high court expected to set off a pitched political battle at the peak of the presidential campaign.

Ginsburg, 87, died after a fight with pancreatic cancer, the court announced, saying she passed away “this evening surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, DC.”

Affectionately known as the Notorious RBG, Ginsburg was the oldest justice of nine on the Supreme Court.

She anchored its liberal faction, whittled to four by two appointments since 2017 from President Donald Trump.

Coming just 46 days before an election in which Trump lags his Democratic rival Joe Biden in the polls, the vacancy offers the Republican president a chance to solidly lock in a conservative majority at the court for decades to come.

That could lead to a court that would potentially limit abortion rights, strengthen the powers of business, and water down rights provided minorities and the LGBTQ community over the past three decades.

But Democrats are expected to fight tough to force a delay in her replacement until after the election — an uphill battle given the control Trump’s Republicans have on the Senate, which must approve any nominee.

Speaking to a rally in Minnesota and apparently still unaware of the news, Trump reminded the crowd of the likelihood that a new term would allow him to appoint new justices.

“The next one will have anywhere from one to four” justices, he said. “Think of that, that will totally change” the landscape on core legal issues, including abortion, he said.

ABC News later reported, citing well-informed sources, that Trump will move quickly to name a replacement.

In a pitch to conservative voters earlier this month, he unveiled a long list of possible replacements for court vacancies, all of them deeply conservative, that he would tap if reelected.

Asked in August by radio host Hugh Hewitt if he would nominate a justice just before the election, Trump replied: “Absolutely, I’d do it.”

“I would move quickly. Why not? I mean they would. The Democrats would if they were in this position.”

Democrats were expected to fight hard to prevent a replacement from being named right away.

Ginsburg herself was acutely aware of the stakes of her health on the court balance, and her fans fretted at her increasingly frequent trips to the hospital over the past two years.

According to NPR radio, Ginsburg raised the issue this week with her granddaughter Clara Spera.

“My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed,” she said, according to Spera.

But Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Friday he would move on any nominee from Trump, ignoring the precedent he set in 2016 in freezing Democratic President Barack Obama’s nominee to fill a vacancy before the election.

“President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate,” McConnell said in a statement.

China restaurant collapse: 13 loses to death.

At least 13 people died on Saturday when a restaurant in northern China collapsed, state media said, with rescuers pulling dozens of survivors from the rubble and searching for others believed to be trapped.

The two-storey building used for banquets came down in the morning in Xiangfen county, in Shanxi province, according to broadcaster CGTN.

“So far, 43 people have been brought out, including the dead and four seriously injured,” the report said.

Images on the CGTN website showed rescuers in orange overalls and hard hats combing the crumbled ruin of the building, with a decorative painting seen on one of the few walls still intact.

CGTN said 700 people were involved in the rescue operation.

While the cause of the disaster was not immediately clear, China is no stranger to building collapses and deadly construction accidents.

They are typically blamed on the country’s rapid growth leading to corner-cutting by builders and the widespread flouting of safety rules.

Niger Republic Flood: Death Toll Hit 45

Several areas of the Niger capital Niamey remained underwater on Thursday as the death toll in recent floods that have displaced over 225,000 people rose to 45, authorities said.

Around 25,000 households had been hit by the floods, a statement by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management said.

In Niamey, where some areas have been submerged since Tuesday after heavy rainfall caused the Niger river to breach its banks, the river rose again by several centimetres after further heavy rains on Wednesday, Noble Reporters Media noted

Dozens of residents fled their homes earlier on Thursday, wading or swimming through flooded streets.

Teams of firefighters took to canoes to help victims.

“Until now we were in a dry place, then heavy rains came on Wednesday night and made the waters rise which took us by surprise as we slept,” said Moussa Amadou, a resident of Kirkissoye, one of the worst-hit neighbourhoods.

Niger, one of the world’s driest as well as poorest countries, often experiences intense rainy seasons, which typically last two or there months.

The authorities announced in July that more than 300,000 people were at risk from flooding by the Niger River and from rainwater runoff since heavy rains began in June.

In 2019, floods killed 32 people.

The Edo State Police Command has paraded six suspects over the rape and murder of a UNIBEN student, Uwaila Omozuwa.

Uwaila was found in a pool of her own blood inside a church where she had gone to read during the coronavirus lockdown period.

She was rushed to a hospital where she gave up the ghost.

The suspects who have now been paraded by the police include Nelson Ogbebor, Akato Valentine, Mrs. Tina Samuel, Mrs. Mary Ade, Nosa Osabohien and Collins Ulegbe.

The suspects confessed that a certain Mrs. Mary Ade paid them N1million to carry out the dastardly act.

After they were done, they used a white handkerchief to clean her blood then handed it over to Mrs Ade.

Protest rocks U.S city after Police shoot Black Man. #BLM

Protests erupted in the US city of Kenosha, Wisconsin, after police shot a black man in the back several times from close range as he got into a car on Sunday evening, according to cellphone video of the incident.

The man, named as Jacob Blake by Wisconsin governor Tony Evers, was airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee and was in serious condition, Kenosha police said.

“Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin,” Evers said on Twitter.

“While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.

“We stand with all those who have and continue to demand justice, equity, and accountability for Black lives in our country.”

Police said the shooting occurred when they were responding to a domestic incident at about 5:11pm.

Cellphone footage of the incident shows a black man followed by two police officers with guns drawn as he goes around the front of a gray SUV.

As he opens the door and tries to get into the driver’s seat one of the officers pulls on his T-shirt and he appears to be shot repeatedly in the back.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said Blake’s three sons were in the car at the time and he had been trying to break up a fight between two women.

“They saw a cop shoot their father. They will be traumatized forever,” Crump said on Twitter.

Crump represents the family of George Floyd, a black man who died on May 25 when a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

After nightfall in Kenosha, a crowd of protestors faced off against riot police, according to footage posted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Kenosha city later declared an overnight curfew.

Wisconsin Department of Justice said its criminal investigation division was investigating the shooting.

“The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave,” it said in a statement early Monday.

The death of Floyd ignited massive nationwide protests against racism and police brutality.

Former Congo Leader Dies At 88.

Former Congolese president Pascal Lissouba died in France on Monday at the age of 88, his Pan-African Union for Social Democracy (UADS) party told AFP.

“President Lissouba passed away after an illness,” party spokesman and MP Honore Sayi said.

Lissouba died in Perpignan, southwestern France, he said.

He was president of the Republic of Congo — also called Congo-Brazzaville, to distinguish it from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) — from 1992 to 1997.

He fled the country after being overthrown in a civil war by the current president, Denis Sassou Nguesso, who had lost the country’s first multi-party elections in 1992.

Imo State Gas Explosion: One lose to death

One person has been feared dead with three persons critically injured after a truck conveying liquefied petroleum gas exploded at a filling station in Irete community along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Owerri-West Local Government Area of Imo state.

The Imo State Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Evans Ugoh, confirmed the incident, Noble Reporters Media learnt

According to him, the truck after discharging its content at the filling station was about reversing and manoeuvring its way out of the premises when it was hit by a J5 commercial bus conveying pineapples on top speed coming from the Onitsha end lost control and ram into the truck, leading to a heavy explosion.

Mr Ugoh confirmed that one of the occupants of the J5 commercial bus died on the spot while 3 other persons who sustained fatal injuries were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He said, however, officials of the Imo State Fire Service, Red Cross, Civil Defence, the Nigerian Police and NEMA officials were all on the ground for rescue operations.

The late Walter Carrington was an American diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Senegal and Nigeria.

He served as the US Ambassador to Senegal from 1980 to 1981 and was appointed by U.S President Bill Clinton in 1993 as the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, where he remained until 1997.

His ties to Nigeria were deep; he had married into a Nigerian family and had lived in three Nigerian cities since the late 1960s.

In 1981, he was named Director of the Department of International Affairs of Howard University. He published several articles on Africa. He served as US Ambassador to Nigeria from 1993 to 1997. On 1 September 2004, Carrington was named the Warburg Professor of International Relations at Simmons College in Boston.

Carrington is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. In 1997, he received an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Humane Letters) from Livingstone College, North Carolina.

Tears as Lagos petrol tanker accident kills woman. [Photos]

A yet-to-be-identified woman has been killed in a tanker accident in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State, south-west Nigeria.

The incident which occurred at about 3am on Friday involved a tanker loaded with 55,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol.

The Director-General of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement hours after it occurred.

He explained that the tanker rammed into a pothole directly in front of the Nigerian Army Signal Barracks in the area and fell sideways, resulting in its contents spilling out onto the road.

Oke-Osanyintolu said after a team of emergency officials arrived in the area, it was discovered that the driver of the tanker and his assistant immediately fled the scene.

He added that further investigation revealed that a female adult, who was seated beside the tanker drivers, was trapped in the impact and lost her life.

According to the LASEMA boss, the remains of the victim were pinned to the dashboard from the impact of the tanker head.

“The agency’s heavy-duty equipment (crane) is en route to the scene in order to recover the tanker together with its contents,” the statement said as of the time of this report.

Oke-Osanyintolu, however, stated that transloading of the contents has been placed on hold until the ownership of the tanker and product was determined.

He said firefighters of the agency and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service and the Nigerian Army were on standby to arrest any potential secondary incident.

The Lagos State Government has paid a visit to the family of the late Chidinma Ajoku.

The Attorney General & Commissioner of Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) accompanied by some top officials from the state’s ministry of justice visited the family today on behalf of the State Government.

They were received by the late Chidinma’s Mum, Chineze Ajoku.

The Attorney General told her that the State Governor feels her pain and is doing everything to ensure that those responsible for the incident are arrested, prosecuted and that the family gets justice.

27 years old, Chidinma, a staff of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) was killed in an accident in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos.

The accident was said to have occurred on the 26th of July when a truck loaded with a 20ft container fell on to a commercial bus which was discharging passengers.

Firefighters war California inferno, thousands lose to death.

More than 2,200 firefighters were battling a blaze that was burning out of control Monday in southern California, threatening thousands of people and homes east of Los Angeles.

The Apple Fire, which broke out Friday near the city of San Bernardino, has so far burnt more than 20,000 acres (8,000 hectares), sending up columns of smoke visible for miles.

Record low moisture in the vegetation, low humidity and high temperatures are fuelling the blaze, the United States Forest Service said.

At least 2,600 homes and nearly 7,800 people were evacuated. Officials said it was not clear when they might be able to return.

By early Monday about 2,260 firefighters backed by helicopters, water-dumping planes and trucks were working to put out the fire.

Crews managed to contain five percent of the fire by Monday, after losing control of the blaze during Sunday afternoon.

There were no reports of casualties, and the only damage so far has been to two buildings and one home.

The edges of the fire are burning on rugged hills hard for crews to reach, authorities said.

Dense vegetation fueled the blaze near homes, said Fernando Herrera, fire chief in Riverside County, while hot and dry conditions Monday will help the flames keep alive.

Officials said the fire may have been set deliberately and a probe is underway.

COVID-19: NCDC reveal only state in Nigeria yet to report death

Despite the rising number of COVID-19 infections in Nigeria with 883 deaths, Taraba is the only state in the country yet to record a single fatality from the virus.

Data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) as of Saturday, August 1st, 2020, indicated that the West Africa country’s COVID-19 infections now stand at 43, 537 with 20,087 recoveries.

Taraba, so far, have 54 cases of the virus, out of which 11 have been discharged, 43 persons on admission but no death reported.

All Clear?
On May 17th, Taraba state discharged all 17 active cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) receiving treatment after they tested negative twice.

Governor Darius Ishaku confirmed this to reporters when he inspected a 100-bed space capacity isolation centre at the NYSC orientation camp in Sibre in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

No Testing Centre
The governor had also lamented the lack of a COVID-19 testing centre in the state, calling on the Federal Government to set up at least one testing centre in the area.

Although a lockdown was imposed on the state to curtail the spread of COVID-19, the government suspended the restriction of movement for residents for the Local Government Council elections held on June 30.

Return To Class
On Thursday and in line with the Federal Government’s directive, the Taraba government asked graduating students in secondary schools in the state to resume on August 4.

It explained that this was to enable the students revise for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

India bootleg alcohol scandal: Death toll rise to 98

The death toll from a toxic bootleg alcohol Iiain in the north Indian state of Punjab rose to 98 Sunday, officials and reports said.

Police have arrested 25 people so far over the worsening tragedy, which starting coming to light late last week, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Hundreds of people die every year in India from illegal alcohol made in backstreet distilleries which sells for as little as 10 rupees (13 US cents) a litre, affordable for even the poorest.

The death toll from the illicit booze had risen to 75 in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district after further investigation, the local administration’s deputy commissioner Kulwant Singh said.

“Several families refused to divulge details of deaths and a few even cremated them. We have come to this number after information gathering,” Singh told Media (known to Noble Reporters Media).

A further 11 people had died in Gurdaspur district, a local official told Media (known to Noble Reporters Media). PTI reported Saturday that toxic moonshine had also killed 12 in Amritsar.

Relatives of the victims mourned on Sunday as the state opposition party called on the Punjab government to “curb liquor mafia in the state” in a series of tweets.

Punjab state chief minister Amarinder Singh said Friday he had ordered a special inquiry into the deaths and “anyone found guilty will not be spared”.

In a separate incident, authorities in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh said on Friday that nine people had died after drinking alcohol-based sanitiser.

Of the estimated five billion litres of alcohol drunk every year in India, around 40 percent is illegally produced, according to the International Spirits and Wine Association of India.

Deaths are frequently reported, with bootleggers often found adding methanol — a highly toxic form of alcohol sometimes used as an anti-freeze — in their brews to increase its strength.

If ingested, methanol can cause blindness, liver damage and death in larger concentrations.

In 2015, more than 100 people died in a Mumbai slum died after drinking illegal moonshine.

Investigation begins over death of seven in Niger salon

Police authorities in Niger State have launched an investigation into the death of seven women found dead at a salon in Rijau Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesman for the State Police Command, Abiodun Wasiu, confirmed the this to Media (known to Noble Reporters Media) on Sunday.

According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased persons passed the night in the salon for hairdressing with an electricity generator.

The owner of the salon was said to have brought in the generator set inside the salon, and in the process, the victims suffocated to death after inhaling smoke from the generator.

“On 31/07/2020 at about 0815hrs, information was received that about seven dead bodies of ladies aged between 14-22yrs were discovered at Afresh beauty salon centre along Bawa-Rijau road in Rijau,” the police spokesman said.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital in Tunga Magajia for autopsy while investigation to unravel the cause of the incident is ongoing.

Noble Reporters Media learnt the incident occurred on Thursday night when the victims; two married women and five ladies went to the salon in the evening to make their hair in preparation for Sallah.

The remains of the victims are also said to have since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Meanwhile, the police asked the people to be more careful and adopt proactive measures when using a generator to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and property.

COVID-19: Deaths in Caribbean, Latin America crosses 200,000.

More than 200,000 people have died from coronavirus in Latin America and the Caribbean, with Brazil and Mexico accounting for nearly three-quarters of those deaths, according to a tally compiled from official sources at 0830 GMT on Sunday.

The number of fatalities stood at 200,212 in Latin America and the Caribbean, out of a total 4,919,054 reported cases. The death total doubled in just over a single month.

Latin America is the second hardest-hit region in the world after Europe, which has recorded 210,425 deaths and 3,189,322 infections.

The United States and Canada are third.

After Brazil and Mexico, the worst-affected countries in Latin America are Peru, Colombia and Chile.

According to virus infection numbers as a proportion of the population, Peru tops the region’s list, followed by Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Panama.

The tallies, using data collected by Media (known to Noble Reporters Media) from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

The victims drank the sanitiser as a substitute for alcohol which has been restricted during a coronavirus lockdown in India.

Nollywood has yet been thrown into mourning as Popular Yoruba actress, Alhaja Musiliat Arikeusola, widely known as Osuntohun dies at 67,

According to reports, Osuntohun reportedly died on Friday morning in her house at Ijetu area, Osogbo, Osun State.

The spokesperson of the Secretary of Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria in Osun State, Ademola Adedokun, verified her demise. Noble Reporters Media learnt

Osuntohun, who rose to prominence after playing the roles of an esoteric being in late Yekinni Ajileye’s Koto Orun series and other Ajileye productions of the 90’s. The actress until death was an Osun worshiper and had battled with an undisclosed ailment for some years.

A statement by Adedokun described the late Osuntohun as “passionate and committed actress who gave her best to the vocation.” According to him, apart from her appearances in Koto Orun, Aye Akamora, Koto Aye, all produced by late Ajileye, Osuntohun also produced movies like ‘Omi Ipin,’ ‘Imi Esin’ and ‘Ogun Omo Iya le’, which Adedokun said was her last work.

Lagos boat capsize: Ten loses to death; Four missing

Ten people have been confirmed dead and four others missing as a boat conveying passengers to Badagry, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, capsized.

The incident was said to have occurred on On Wednesday.

It was reported that an open boat carrying 19 passengers capsized at about 6.00pm while enroute Badagry from Kirikiri.

A statement issued by Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority, on Friday, said a survivor’s account stated that the boat’s Captain got distracted trying to collect fares from a passenger and that the boat was overturned by the current while most passengers were yet to put on their lifejackets properly.

“Rescue effort was immediate as the boat was just a few metres from the landing in which they left from but only 5 people were able to be rescued.

“A total of 19 persons were involved in the incident, 5 were rescued with 10 persons confirmed dead and 4 still unaccounted for, including the boat deckhand,” Emmanuel said.

He said LASWA had apprehended the boat captain and had handed him over to marine police for further investigation and sanctions.

“The Emergency and Regulatory Authorities are still on a search and rescue operation,” he said.

    Zimbabwean minister died from COVID-19 complications – Presidency reveals

    Zimbabwe’s agriculture minister Perrance Shiri, a retired general who commanded an army unit accused of a notorious massacre in the 1980s, succumbed to coronavirus, the president said on Thursday.

    Shiri, who was also involved in the ouster of longtime ruler Robert Mugabe in a 2017 coup, died on Wednesday aged 65.

    The state-owned daily The Herald said President Emmerson Mnangagwa told mourners “it is confirmed that Minister Shiri died of COVID-19”.

    Local independent media had said Wednesday that Shiri had been quarantined at a private hospital after he was exposed to coronavirus by his driver, who reportedly died at the weekend.

    Shiri became Zimbabwe’s first high-profile personality to die from the virus that is fast spreading in the country, which has a weak health system.

    Shiri was commander of an elite North Korean-trained unit, the Fifth Brigade, that cracked down on a revolt in the western province of Matabeleland in the newly independent Zimbabwe.

    Borno bomb blast: Five concedes existence to death

    At least five people have been killed in triple explosions that rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

    The explosions occurred on Thursday evening in Custom Area, a densely populated part of the town.

    Mr Mohammed Ndatsu, who is the Commissioner of Police in the state, confirmed the attack and the casualty figure to Channels Television.

    Although it was not clear what explosive was used for the attack, the police commissioner said only a bomb specialist could explain that.

    He added that the attack was carried out by insurgents.

    The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Khalifa Ibrahim, has visited the scenes of the blasts for an on the spot assessment.

    While the explosives were not person-borne, the first reportedly landed at a shop in the commercial area, killing a furniture maker and his son.

    Another explosive was also reported to have landed in a house at Gwange area while a child and a goat were killed.

    Two other people were struck in a blast at the third location, bringing the number of those killed to five.

    Officials of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) have evacuated the bodies of the victims from the scenes of the blasts.

    Over the years, members of the Boko Haram terrorist group and Islamic State’s West Africa Province have carried out such attacks in the state, killing thousands of people in the process.

    The terrorist groups have continued to operate in different parts of the North-East, although in recent times, they have come under intense airstrikes from the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole.

    The onslaught against the insurgents by military personnel has forced them to the fringes of the Sambisa forest and the Lake Chad area in the region.

    Wednesday’s bomb blasts in Maiduguri came a day after the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, was attacked in Baga.

    Following a fierce gun battle, the governor has been confronting the Nigerian Army over the incident.

    He said he was disappointed with the inability of the military to rid Baga and environs of insurgents, accusing the Nigerian Army of sabotaging the government’s counter-terrorism and rebuilding efforts.

    The governor who seemed convinced, alleged that the attack was carried out by the military in an attempt to dissuade him from gaining entrance into the fishing town.

      Afghan car explosion: 17 lose to death

      At least 17 people were killed in a car bomb explosion in an Afghan city south of Kabul on Thursday, officials and a medic said, just hours before the scheduled start of a ceasefire.

      “Seventeen bodies and 21 wounded people were brought to our hospital,” Sediqullah, a senior doctor at a hospital in the city of Puli Alam in Logar province, told Media (known to Noble Reporters Media).

      The interior ministry confirmed the blast, which occurred ahead of a three-day ceasefire starting Friday between the Taliban and Kabul.
