As he arrived at the King Fahd International Stadium for the clash, Ronaldo received a rather surprising reaction from the home crowd.
The 37-year-old, who has been treated like royalty since making his big-money move to the Middle East, was greeted by chants for his eternal rival Messi.
Ronaldo played against Messi last weekend in a friendly and is now settling into domestic action with his new side.
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo could make his Saudi Arabian debut on January 22 after he was successfully registered by new team Al Nassr, a club source told AFP on Saturday.
Ronaldo, who was unveiled to fans this week, joined the squad list after Al Nassr terminated Manchester United-linked striker Vincent Aboubakar to stay within the maximum eight foreign nationals stipulated by the Saudi league.
He will now be available for the January 22 home game against Ettifaq after completing a two-match ban issued in November for smashing a fan’s mobile phone while playing for Manchester United.
“Al Nassr terminated Vincent Aboubakar’s contract by mutual consent and he received all his financial rights,” the club source said, adding that Ronaldo was registered before Al Nassr’s game against Al Ta’ee on Friday.

“So now he served one game from the ban and will serve the other one against Al Shabab” on January 14, the source said.
The official did not address reports that Aboubakar, 30, could be on his way to Manchester United, saying he was now a free agent and could negotiate with any team.
Ronaldo, 37, joined Al Nassr in a deal believed to be worth around 200 million euros that has shone an unprecedented light on the Saudi Pro League.
It comes as Saudi Arabia, which watched as neighbour Qatar hosted the World Cup in November and December, considers a joint bid for the 2030 tournament with Greece and Egypt.
The deeply conservative kingdom is snapping up sports assets as part of a drive to soften its harsh image, attract foreign interest and diversify its oil-reliant economy.

Critics have accused the Saudis of “sportswashing” — using sport to deflect attention from human rights controversies.
Brazilian football legend, Ronaldo Nazario, has admitted he would be a “hypocrite” if he claimed he would like to see Lionel Messi win the World Cup with Argentina.
Last Friday, Brazil were sent home from the tournament in Qatar at the quarter-final stage by Croatia.
“But, you know, we have a great rivalry between Brazil and Argentina. But I will not be that much of a hypocrite to say I will be happy for Argentina because it’s not true,” Ronaldo said

Morocco wrote World Cup history on Saturday to become the first African and Arab country ever to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup after they beat Portugal 1-0, extending their dream run thanks to a towering headed goal from Youssef En-Nesyri as they out-thought and out-fought the Portuguese side.
Youssef En-Nesyri leapt high in the air to head home the game’s only goal just before half-time at the Al-Thumama Stadium to strike a significant blow against football’s established order and book a semi-final on Wednesday against either England or France, who meet later on Saturday.
The result will be widely celebrated across Africa and the Arabic-speaking Middle East, desperate to see one of their teams in contention for the biggest prize in football.
Morocco had already taken the scalps of Belgium and Spain in this tournament but the win over Portugal is of much greater significance.
It was also one of Morocco’s better performances in Qatar, full of determined defending and canny counters, keeping at bay a collection of world stars despite losing key defender Nayef Aguerd to injury before the match and his back four partner and captain Romain Saiss early in the second half.
Portugal will see it as a missed opportunity against the lowest-ranked side left in the tournament and a disappointing curtain call for the 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.
Morocco, again noisily encouraged by the majority of the 44,198-strong crowd, said they were fatigued after their last-16 success over Spain and immediately went into defensive mode as Portugal attacked from the outset.
A fourth-minute free kick for Portugal from wide on the right was swung into the penalty area, and met by Joao Felix’s diving header, producing a fine save from Yassine Bounou.
But the supply quickly dried up thereafter as Morocco closed the passing lanes and frustrated the Portuguese attackers.

Joao Felix had two more half chances in the first half but Morocco gained in confidence and found a sudden spring in their step, frequently breaking on the counter attack.
SURGING
Left back Yahya Attiat-Allah made several surging runs down the flank, presenting Selim Amallah with a good chance in the 35th minute, which he was unable to convert.
But seven minutes later, a high ball from the fullback into the Portuguese box was met by a towering header from En-Nesyri, outjumping both goalkeeper Diogo Costa and defender Ruben Dias to hand Morocco the lead.
Portuguese frustration was evident as they swarmed the Argentine referee Facundo Tello at the end of the first half, complaining that several penalty appeals had been turned down.
Morocco came close to a second goal four minutes into the second half as Jawad El Yamiq got a touch to Hakim Ziyech’s in-swinging free kick but Costa was in place this time to block.
Ronaldo’s entry in the 51st minute was met with a loud chorus of jeers, but he did inject a new energy into the Portugal side for whom Goncalo Ramos, the hat-trick hero of their 6-1 win over Switzerland in the previous round, missed with a close-in header in the 58th minute.
Bruno Fernandes hit over the top of the crossbar five minutes later as Portugal threw more into attack and Morocco began to sit deeper. Bounou saved again from Joao Felix with seven minutes left.
Morocco’s Walid Cheddira was sent off in stoppage time after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.

Cutting corners is not enough for Cristiano Ronaldo’s sketchy Portugal, who with one game to spare in the group stages of the tournament could advance early to the next round if they take down Uruguay on Monday but words alone make the task easier said than done
Uruguay have the World Cup edge in winning the tournament twice, albeit a few generations ago, and are more than familiar with Portugal, having knocked them out of the contest in 2018 in the round of 16.
Although Ronaldo stole the show on Thursday, setting a record by scoring in his fifth World Cup in Portugal’s 3-2 win over Ghana, his team lacked inspiration and have much to do to shake off a dismal run of World Cup form since reaching the semi-finals in 2006.
Uruguay, while failing to score any goals or even record any shots on target in their opener against a gritty South Korea on Thursday, were composed, organized, and like a team capable of another deep World Cup run, with veterans and neophytes combining seamlessly and moving the ball with confidence.
All five goals of Portugal’s opening game came in a frenetic final 25 minutes likened by coach Fernando Santos to a storm. He said he is untroubled going into the Uruguay match because he knows what needs fixing.
“It’s nothing I’m worried about because I know that my players can do better than that, but that’s football,” he said. “I am totally confident that they can perform much better than this.”
Portugal, with a habit of going down to the wire in the World Cup group stages, may want to avoid that this time with a final match against South Korea, the team that ended Germany’s title defense in 2018.

Equally, Uruguay will want to avoid defeat against Portugal so their fate can remain in their own hands in their final match against Ghana.
Uruguay have looked good since Diego Alonso took over late last year and turned things around in qualifying. He has every player available in his squad, except Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, recovering from thigh surgery.
Alonso’s defense looked sturdy against South Korea and he is blessed with plenty of attacking options through Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani – despite their age – and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez and Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri, who looked dangerous on their World Cup debuts.
Alonso expects a tough game on Monday, and for the group to be decided in the final match.

Buhari, according to a statement issued on Saturday night by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, will unveil the equipment at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Cristiano Ronaldo drew a line under a tumultuous tournament build-up as he wrote his name in the record books to become the first man to score in five World Cups in a 3-2 victory for Portugal over Ghana on Thursday.
Ronaldo drilled home a penalty in the 65th minute of the Group H encounter to set his side on their way and while Andre Ayew equalized for Ghana, Portugal turned on the afterburners with two quick-fire goals to effectively seal the deal at Stadium 974.
Joao Felix produced a delicate finish to give them the lead and Rafael Leao added a third to hand Portugal their first win in the opening match of the World Cup since 2006, even if Osman Bukari pulled another one back for Ghana late on.
The win was not the most convincing for Portugal, and will come as some relief for Fernando Santos’s side, who top the group with three points and next face Uruguay on Monday when Ghana play South Korea.
For all Portugal’s enterprising attacking play and the goalscoring performances of Felix and Leao, it was Ronaldo who once again showed his unparalleled ability to draw the limelight.
“I think Cristiano is a phenomenon, a legend… in 50 years’ time, we will still be talking about him,” Santos said.
The bitter end to Ronaldo’s second spell at Manchester United had dominated the build-up to the match in much the same way the forward seems to dominate the way Portugal play.
Ronaldo said he was “very proud” of his record and that he was living a “beautiful moment.”
“It’s a beautiful moment in my fifth World Cup,” Ronaldo told reporters. “We won. We started on a good foot. It’s a very important win. We know in these competitions the first match is fundamental.
“It’s another record too,” he said. “That makes me very proud. I am very happy for the team to have put on excellent performance. It was difficult, but we deserved to win.”
Asked about his acrimonious departure from Manchester United this week, Ronaldo said the only thing that mattered was Portugal’s win.
“All the rest, it doesn’t matter,” he added.
Against Ghana, Ronaldo seemed to exert a planetary gravitational pull on the ball, with teammates seeking him out at every opportunity.

For vast swathes of the match, everything revolved around Ronaldo, who lurked threateningly on the edge of the Ghana box, with almost all his side’s attacking moves ending up at his feet.
He had two early chances, a one-on-one when a heavy touch let him down, and a header where he typically hovered in the air before glancing his effort wide.
He then smacked the ball in the back of the net after 31 minutes only to realize the referee had already blown his whistle for a foul.
For Ghana, the youngest squad at the Qatar World Cup, their early ambitions rarely stretched beyond the halfway line as the lowest-ranked side in the tournament set about keeping almost everyone behind the ball at all times in the first half.
Soft penalty Most of the action was condensed into a relatively short period after the 60th minute with Portugal taking the lead when awarded a soft penalty after Ronaldo went down following minimal shoulder-to-shoulder contact with Mohammed Salisu.
Ronaldo closed his eyes as he waited to begin his run-up, stuttered, and smashed the ball into the net to the keeper’s right.
The entire Portugal team raced down the touchline to pile on top of the 37-year-old, who surpassed Pele, Uwe Seeler, and Miroslav Klose as the only player to find the net in five separate men’s World Cups.
It is the 10th consecutive major tournament in which Ronaldo has found the net although Ghana coach Otto Addo was not in the mood to be charitable.
“It was the wrong decision… It was actually a foul against us,” he said of the penalty award.
“If somebody scores a goal, congratulations. But this was a gift. A special gift from the referee.”
As it was, his Ghana side fired back quickly when Mohammed Kudus’s cross bobbled its way through a defender’s legs to Ayew who tapped home.
Portugal, however, then revved into gear with Felix latching onto a Bruno Fernandes through-ball and lifting his finish nonchalantly over the keeper.
Fernandes was the architect of their third goal too, playing another superb through-ball for substitute Leao to slide his finish across the keeper and into the bottom corner.
There was tension at the end, however, as Ghana pulled another goal back with Osman Bukari, appearing unmarked in the box, heading in a cross from the left in the 89th minute, giving a sliver of hope to Ghana’s fans behind that goal.

However, beyond the tournament, it is hard to see the five-time Ballon d’Or winner return to Old Trafford.
United are likely to pay Ronaldo off in the January transfer window, a time in which he will have six months left on his current deal.
Ronaldo tried to leave in the summer for a club playing in the Champions League, but ended up staying at the club, where he has been benched for most games by Ten Hag.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has heaped praise on Cristiano Ronaldo and insists the 37-year-old’s second stint at Manchester United has been successful – despite ruling out any possibility of the Magpies signing the Portuguese striker.
Ronaldo rejoined United in the summer of 2021, 12 years after leaving for Real Madrid, and scored 24 goals in 38 games last season.
Despite this, his second stint at the club has polarised fans, with many suggesting his presence was detrimental to United’s performances as they dropped to sixth in the Premier League table. Update: Rich sugar mummies in Lagos | No connection fee
Ronaldo attempted to leave Old Trafford in the summer but was unable to convince other clubs to sign him.
One side with the funds to sign Ronaldo would be Newcastle United – however, manager Howe insists the newly wealthy club has no intention of making such a move.
“At the moment, we have quite an ageing squad, so we need to invest more in young players. That’s probably a big part of our progression, we need to get the average age down.
“So, it might not be a signing that we would necessarily look to make, but that’s not under-estimating the quality of the player.”
Howe added: “He’s an outstanding player. You look at his goal record last year, that was incredible. So, for me, the transfer has worked, it’s been a success.
“He got massive goals last year and some really late, important goals in the Champions League. The quality of the player is unquestionable. We are going to have to be very, very good against him if he plays. We’re going to have to brief our players on the areas from where he wants to score That’s something we have to be aware of.”
Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli has revealed why the Serie A side did not pursue a move for Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, despite speculation linking him with a move to the club.
Ronaldo was intent on leaving Old Trafford after Manchester United failed to qualify for this season’s Champions League. However, he didn’t particularly come close to leaving and has now fallen down the pecking order in Manchester.
The 37-year-old was linked with several clubs across Europe – most notably Chelsea and Bayern Munich – while Napoli seemingly emerged as a late contender for his signature.
Giuntoli has since dismissed this as speculation, though in an interview with Corriere dello Sport, he revealed why exactly Napoli weren’t in contention to sign Ronaldo anyway.
“During the transfer market we pretend to chat with everyone, and sometimes we do it for real – but we wanted to invest in a young team,” he said.

Napoli’s young stars – including Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – put Liverpool to the sword on Wednesday evening, smashing the Reds 4-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, made his first Europa League appearance since his Sporting CP days (and when it was known as the UEFA Cup) as United were beaten 1-0 at home by Real Sociedad on Thursday.
New Manchester United star Antony has opened up on his relationship with teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
United concluded a €100m deal to sign Antony from Ajax towards the end of a summer transfer window which was dominated by uncertainty over Ronaldo’s United future, with the Portugal international asking to leave in search of Champions League football.
With interest in Ronaldo limited, he remained at Old Trafford to see Antony join, and the Brazilian has admitted playing alongside the 37-year-old has still not sunk in.
“I’ve come to help my team-mates,” he told MUTV. “Regardless of age, there’s immense talent in all the players.
“Words can’t describe Cristiano, the best in the world. In just a few days, I’ve learnt a lot from him. He has an extraordinary mind and, whenever I talk to him, I take a lot from it.
“I’m sure that we have a strong attack and it’s very promising for the future.”
Like Ronaldo’s first spell at the club, Antony has brought flair and tricky footwork on the ball, and he pledged to keep that style of play going for years to come.
“I’ve always done this,” he said. “Not just here but for all the teams I’ve played for. “I’ve been doing it ever since I was a child. I’ve always done it – it’s one of my characteristics.
“I am adapting and getting used to things here already. Entertaining is something I’ve always liked and I’ll continue doing it.”
Manchester United manager, Erik Ten Hag, has said Cristiano Ronaldo is “ready to start” in the majority of their games this season.
After intense transfer speculation linking him with a summer exit, Ronaldo has found himself starting games from the bench.
However, Ten Hag believes the 37-year-old is now fully match fit and ready to start regularly for the Red Devils.
Speaking ahead of a Europa League group stage opener against Real Sociedad, Ten Hag said: “He [Ronaldo] started against Brentford, then not since, but he is ready to start.
“Of course [he can start for the majority of games].”
Erik ten Hag has spoken to the media ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League group stage opener against Real Sociedad.
United have bounced back superbly from their disastrous beginning to the new season, winning their last four matches – including landmark victories against Liverpool and Arsenal.
The Red Devils get their European campaign underway on Thursday evening. Here’s what Ten Hag had to say at his pre-match press conference.
Thomas Tuchel What are your thoughts on Chelsea sacking Thomas Tuchel? “I feel sorry, but there is nothing I can say. It’s Chelsea, not Man United. It’s early in the season, yes.”
Cristiano Ronaldo & rotation Will Cristiano Ronaldo return to the starting lineup? “He started against Brentford, then not since, but he is ready to start. Of course [he can start for the majority of games].”
What are your plans for Europa League rotation? “We have to win every game. We want to win every tournament, so we take everything seriously. We not only have a team, we have a squad, but we have to win every game and that is the mentality Manchester United needs.
“Maybe I can not keep them all happy every game, but everyone gets the game time if they perform well – quite clear. As I’ve said, we need everyone, we have a lot of games to cover.”
What’s the mood like in the squad? “It’s always difficult when you lose games, the mood is not the same, but we always come here every day to give 100%, to get better in every aspect and that we can be, obviously after Brentford we had a full week to prepare for a game we knew would be difficult. We won it, it’s in the past now, we want to focus on tomorrow and do the same things every game.”
Marcus Rashford What have you made of Marcus Rashford’s return to form? “Once again, it’s difficult for me to talk about the past. What I see is a happy Marcus Rashford. We worked really hard the last two months with him on different aspects. He likes it, he wants to transfer it to the pitch. It started with happiness, he comes in every day, he enjoys it, he’s smiling, a really positive vibe, and if you put all of those things together – like the way of play – and you are happy, you will contribute more to the team.”
Does Rashford plan to sign a new contract? “Definitely. I don’t think he’s out of contract and I think United control the situation.”
Manchester United could be set to sign Ivan Toney this summer, according to the UK Mirror.
Toney is also attracting attention from other Premier League sides like Leeds, Newcastle United and West Ham.
Last season, the 26-year-old netted 14 times and provided six assists.
Toney played for six months with Christian Eriksen’s last campaign, but the Denmark international has sealed a move as a free agent to United.
However, United’s decision to step up their interest to sign Toney could depend on the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial.
Ronaldo has already submitted a transfer request at Old Trafford and is yet to report for preseason training under Erik ten Hag. The 37-year-old is not happy with the club’s transfer activity and also wants to play Champions League football.
Martial went to Sevilla on loan in January and could still leave the Red Devils ahead of next season.
Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has again insisted that the club will not be signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, despite star striker Robert Lewandowski edging closer to a move away from Bavaria.
As reported by Noble Reporters’ known Media, Barcelona have agreed a €50m deal with Bayern for Lewandowski’s services, with La Blaugrana hoping to have the transfer agreed by the end of the weekend.
The Poland international’s departure would leave Die Roten with a sizeable void up front, and they have been linked with Ronaldo recently.
However, once again, those at the top of the club have definitively ruled out the Manchester United forward joining Bayern this summer.
“I have a lot of respect for Cristiano Ronaldo, his successes and his career. But once again: That was and is not a topic for us,” Salihamidzic told Sport.
Noble Reporters Media understands that Ronaldo has asked for United to consider any reasonable offers for his services this summer. Chelsea, Bayern and Napoli were initially contacted over a possible move, but the pool of interested parties is shrinking.
United manager Erik ten Hag has also insisted that he wants Ronaldo to remain at the club this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo will not play for Manchester United against Liverpool on Tuesday night following the death of his baby son.
The 37-year-old and his partner Georgina Rodriguez announced the tragic news on Monday.

Pogba drew the ire of the home support on two occasions on what was a fraught afternoon following fan protests against the club’s owners, the Glazer family, before kick-off.
The 29-year-old was substituted with 17 minutes to go with the score still at 2-2 and was booed as he left the field. Then, reacting angrily to what had happened after full-time, Pogba cupped his hand to his ear before heading down the tunnel and was jeered once again.
Speaking after the match, Man Utd interim manager Rangnick attempted to defend his player but accepted the supporters’ frustration.
“Support in the stadium today was great. I can fully understand that the fans are frustrated,” He said. “So are we and so are the players and the staff, but I don’t think they should target individual players.
“Things have stayed, as far as I know, peaceful. I don’t think it makes sense to take or target any individual or players.
“If so, it is a collective responsibility. Even if you want to look into the past, it really doesn’t make any sense.”
Pogba is out of contract at the end of the season and 90min understands he is increasingly likely to leave the club on a free transfer, with Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid all possible destinations.
Ralf Rangnick lauded Cristiano Ronaldo as the “difference-maker” for Manchester United, but added that a new manager will have a say over his long-term future at the club after his hat-trick against Norwich on Saturday.
The Red Devils have largely underachieved this season but another treble from Ronaldo against the Canaries ensured their top-four hopes remain alive, with both Tottenham and Arsenal losing on Saturday.
United were poor once again and required Ronaldo to bail them out of trouble, with the Portugal international netting a free kick to win the game 15 minutes from time.
When asked whether Ronaldo would have a future under the next manager, interim boss Rangnick said it wasn’t down to him.
“This is in the end not my decision,” he said. “Cristiano has got another year of contract. This will be a decision for the new manager to take, together with the board.
“Again, he showed against Tottenham and today’s game, that he can be the difference-maker, in moments like this, in games like this, and it is no coincidence he has the best goalscoring record of all players in history. He showed that again today.”
Erik ten Hag is expected to take over in the summer, having impressed with Ajax. He will lead a club rebuild, with the futures of many players at Old Trafford uncertain.
One player who will definitely be leaving is Nemanja Matic, who has already confirmed the time is right for him to move on in the summer.
Bayern Munich and Canada star Alphonso Davies has become the latest high-profile figure to take a shot at ‘what’s his name’ Harry Maguire, insisting Cristiano Ronaldo should replace him as the captain of Manchester United.
Maguire has endured a tough season off the back of a great 2020/21 campaign for club and country and has become a lightning rod for United criticism this term.
The 29-year-old received the backing of several high-profile players after he was booed by parts of the Wembley crowd while on England duty last month, and Maguire’s role as United captain has come under scrutiny from the media this season.
Davies was live-streaming a pack opening on EA Sports’ FIFA 22 when he came across Maguire’s Ultimate Team card and began a monologue on the issue of the captaincy at Man Utd.
“Can you guys imagine…no, take this in….you’re Ronaldo, one of the greatest players ever in the 21st century. And what’s his name is your captain, Harry Maguire’s your captain. And you refer to him as ‘yes, cap’ or I don’t know what he says to him but like, getting leadership? Bro,” Davies said in disbelief.
After such a tirade, Davies did add that he did not mean to disrespect Maguire, but that he just feels Ronaldo should be the captain at Old Trafford.
“And I’m not dissing Harry Maguire but Ronaldo should get the armband,” he added.
Cristiano Ronaldo limped off the pitch at the end of Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park with two visible bloody wounds on his left leg.
Ronaldo led the line for a hapless United side that were outfought by the Toffees – in the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s case, quite literally as he was left with nothing to show for his battle scars.
United dominated the ball but managed only four shots on target in 95 minutes. Ronaldo himself couldn’t get any change out of Everton centre-backs Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey.

Since the game finished, an image of Ronaldo removing his shin pad and gesturing at the gruesome wounds on his lower leg, have been widely shared online.
The only thing keeping United in seventh place in the Premier League table this weekend was Wolves’ defeat to Newcastle on Friday night. Had Bruno Lage’s team won, they would have leapfrogged the struggling Red Devils and stayed there.
Even though Saturday’s result was only the third time Rangnick has suffered defeat in a Premier League fixture, United have won only one of their last five games in the league – and just three of their last nine. Since the start of February, they have also been knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough and the Champions League by Atletico Madrid.
