Super Eagles Can Win The World Cup – CAF President

Patrice Motsepe believes the Super Eagles have the potential to win the World Cup.

Nigeria have qualified for the World Cup six times with their best performance at the competition coming in 1994, 1998, and 2002 when the team reached the second round of the global football showpiece.

Despite not qualifying for the recently concluded edition in Qatar, the Confederation of African Football president is optimistic the three-time African champions can win the title.

“I am absolutely confident [because of] the talent, God-given skills, and history of Nigerian football. Nigeria is one of those countries that have the potential – not just to go to the semi-final, not just to go to the final, but to win the World Cup,” he told Channels Television.

“To focus on youth football development, football facilities for boys and girls, amateur football, football development at club level, training coaches and training the trainers, the development of referees and very importantly, to make sure that we work together with the football federation in Nigeria so that they can continue the leadership that they have provided for many years,” Motseppe added.

“We are confident that Nigerian football will continue to be not just amongst the best in Africa but in the world and will make us proud as it has on so many occasions in the past. Our plan is to see Nigeria in the next World Cup.”

His comment came days after Morocco became the first African team (after only four teams from the continent have reached the quarter-final) to reach the semi-final of the quadrennial competition, a feat the billionaire said has opened the floodgate for the continent.

“Morocco opened the door by reaching the semi-finals this month and I am confident an African nation will go further at the next World Cup,” the chief said.

“The main objective of CAF (Confederation of African Football) is for an African nation to win the World Cup and that goal is within reach.”

Africa has done relatively well at the 2022 World Cup.

Cameroon’s 1-0 victory over hot favourites Brazil was a little too late.

However, champions of the continent, Senegal, have booked their place in the last 16

Morocco finished top of a group that had Belgium, Croatia and Canada.

Only Nigeria has achieved that feat in the history of the World Cup.

But have they been missed in Qatar this year?

“The FIFA World Cup can only ever miss Brazil if they ever were to miss out.

“So, nobody is missing Nigeria in Qatar except Nigerians,” Calvin Onwuka, the CEO of ACL Sports told DAILY POST.

Would the Super Eagles have made the last 16?

Onwuka replied: “Always depends on Draws. If we were in Cameroon’s group then it could have been difficult as it is for the Cameroonians.

“If we were in Senegal’s group then, yes I would expect us to make it.”

Biola Kazeem, a Senior Executive in Sports Marketing and Communications, is in Qatar to watch the tournament.

He believes Nigeria would have indeed given the rest of the world something to think about.

“I think the Super Eagles might have made an impression.

“Simply because we have better attacking players than any African team there for example and teams with attacking quality always have a chance.

“Osimhen is in great form, Moffi, Ademola Lukman. Even Iwobi,” Kazeem said.

England face Senegal with unbeaten run against CAF teams at stake.

Advertisements

Whenever the Three Lions have gone hunting against African teams, the odds have always been in their favor but Sunday’s World Cup last-16 clash against Senegal – the first meeting between the two countries – might end that streak.

It will be England’s 21st clash against an African team, the last coming in March against Senegal’s regional rivals Ivory Coast, who a second-string England easily beat 3-0 at Wembley.

But it was more than three decades ago that England had their most memorable encounter against an African side, fighting back from 2-1 down versus Cameroon to win 3-2 after extra time in the 1990 World Cup quarterfinal.

The Indomitable Lions were seven minutes away from continuing their upset run at Italia ’90 when tough-tackling defender Benjamin Massing gave away a penalty by fouling Gary Lineker, who converted to take the game to extra time.

Cameroon goalkeeper Thomas N’Kono then conceded a spot kick when he brought down Lineker who netted the penalty to put England in the semifinals.

Morocco were England’s first African opponents at a World Cup in 1986 when a 0-0 draw at Monterrey proved a breakthrough result for African football. Morocco finished ahead of England in their group, but both went through to the next stage.

There have also been goalless stalemates against Nigeria in Osaka in 2002 and Algeria in Cape Town in 2010.

England beat Egypt at the 1990 World Cup in Cagliari and Tunisia twice in the 1998 and 2018 editions.

The 1998 clash in Marseille was overshadowed by fan violence with at least 32 people injured in three days of fighting between England supporters and gangs from Marseille’s North African community.

England’s other African opponents have been Ghana and South Africa in friendly internationals.

If any England players need advice on scoring against an African team ahead of Sunday’s clash they need look no further than their manager Gareth Southgate.

CAF’19: Social media users blast NFF Officials who refused to vote for Asisat

Nigerian officials who refused to vote for Barcelona forward and Super Falcons captain, Asisat Oshoala as she won the African Women Player of the Year for a record fourth time after edging out Ajara Nchout and Thembi Kgatlana at the 2019 CAF Award held in Egypt on Tuesday have been criticized on social media.

Fans also took to Twitter to call out Nigeria football federation representatives who were part of the voters for the awards but did not vote for Super Falcons captain.

The 25-year-old dusted off challenges from Ajara Nchout and Thembi Kgatlana to equal Perpetua Nkwocha’s achievement after winning 2014, 2016 and 2017 awards.

In a forensic audit done by Sports Village Square, Oshoala lost valuable five votes in the first phase of the voting conducted among technical committee members as Nigeria and NFF member, Ahmed Yusuf did not vote.

That assisted in expanding the 14 point gap that Cameroon’s Ajara Nchout had over Asisat Oshoala.

Even though Oshoala made up with massive votes from the media, she did not get maximum support from the three Nigerian media men that voted.

They were all linked with the NFF. Osasu Obayiuwana, Chisom Mbonu Ezeoke, Tunde Adelakun, and Perpetua Nkwocha, a former Super Falcons player voted Oshoala last, giving her just a point while giving her valuable five points to Cameroon’s Ajara Nchout.

See social media reactions;

@biolakazeem said “The lesson from Twitter per Asisat Oshoala is that nepotism is good. Soon enough, same people will complain in another instance where favouritism/nepotism is placed above fairness in making a decision. It’s the zombie life. Making it up as you go along. Such a sad existence.”

@Solar_unique said “The five Nigerians who were delegates in the Just concluded CAF awards didn’t vote for Asisat Oshoala. Shame!”

@staconzy16 said “No single body from the corporate Nigerian media pushed the Asisat Oshoala CAF agenda! Just media bodies From Spain, @LaLiga @BarcaWorldwide @FCBfemen etc did. I’m utterly dissapointed that Perpetual Nkwocha did this to a junior Colleague. We are our own hindrance! Imagine

@NuolBeth said “RT “RT gidifeedtv: God is bigger than Men, see the way Nigerians voted against their own sister, Asisat oshoala at the just concluded #CAFAwards2019 Why are blacks like this?”

@olywal said “Just learnt Perpetua voted Asisat Oshoala 5th. I respect her opinion but this was petty from a legend of the game.”

@ITCANBE_DONE said “Only 5 Nigerians had the opportunity to vote for @AsisatOshoala in the recently concluded CAF awards and none of the five voted for her. But she eventually won. Jack Ma said it all, that’s life.”
