Report Finds NY Police Abusive To George Floyd Protesters.

According to a report released on Monday, an independent New York City police review board has recommended that the NYPD discipline scores of officers for excessive use of force and other alleged misbehavior during protests following the 2020 murder of George Floyd.

Among the complaints, officers were found to have used batons and pepper spray on peaceful protesters in 140 instances. Dozens of allegations of abuse of authority, including officers refusing to identify themselves, concealing their badges and making false or misleading statements, were also substantiated, the report by Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) said.

More than 600, or 43%, of misconduct allegations were closed after officers could not be identified, raising a big obstacle in the boardโ€™s review, the report said.

โ€œThis report shows why the NYPD cannot continue to have a monopoly on discipline,โ€ Molly Biklen, deputy legal director at the New York Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement. โ€œWhen New Yorkers took to the streets calling for racial justice in 2020, the NYPD responded with violence.โ€

Thousands of protesters flooded New York streets for weeks in demonstrations against police brutality days after Floyd, a Black man accused of passing a counterfeit $20 bill, died when a white Minneapolis police officer pinned his neck to the ground with a knee for several minutes in May 2020. Smaller-scale protests continued into early fall.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) objected to many of the reportโ€™s findings, saying less than 15% of all allegations were substantiated. In a statement, it accused the board of exaggerating the extent of any misconduct, saying it involved less than 1% of 22,000 officers deployed during the protests.

The less that 15% substantiation rate of allegations against officers confirms โ€œthat the NYPDโ€™s response to the protests during the summer of 2020 was largely professional, commendable, and responsive to the unique circumstances that were present at the time,โ€ NYPD Acting Deputy Commissioner Carrie Talansky said in a statement.

Hundreds of officers were injured and the department had already implemented many of the 17 policy changes recommended by the board, NYPD said.

โ€œProtests against police brutality bred more instances of police misconduct,โ€ CCRB Interim Chair Arva Rice said in the report. โ€œIf this misconduct goes unaddressed, it will never be reformed.โ€

Of the 146 officers cited by the report, 89 of them should face internal charges, which can result in termination. The board recommended discipline, which can include the loss of vacation days, for the other 57 officers.

The board, composed of 15 members appointed by the mayor, city council and police commissioner, has the power to conduct administrative prosecutions, but the commissioner has final say over any discipline

Kanye West Returns, Takes Aim At Personal Trainer, Says He Was โ€œMentally Misdiagnosedโ€

Advertisements

Just like that, Kanye West is back on Twitter. It was speculated that the Yeezy mogul would soon reappear on the micro-blogging platform after receiving a temporary ban. West has been on the outs with social media outlets as of late due to his incendiary remarks about the Jewish community. His comments and posts have been labeled as anti-Semitic, causing a wave of fallout in his business ventures. It was recently estimated that in one day, West lost $2 billion in deals.

Both lucrative ventures Adidas and The Gap have parted ways with Ye, but theโ€cancelationโ€ reach went far. Soon, some brands issued statements declaring they would no longer include Westโ€™s music, like Peleton. On Apple Music, fans noticed that the ever-popular โ€œEssentials Playlistโ€ for Kanye West had been removed.

Kanyeโ€™s response to his scandal has been overall confusing. He may sit for an interview where he triples down on his pro-White Lives Matter, anti-BLM, anti-Semitic rhetoric one day, before dishing out apologies with the paparazzi the next. Some feared that with Elon Musk at the helm of Twitter, Ye would make a grand returnโ€”and itโ€™s safe to say that they were correct

Advertisements

For hours, West has been steadily sharing tweets that have quickly stolen attention. He paid tribute to the late Takeoff in two posts before showing his support for Kyrie Irving. The Nets baller has been in the crosshairs of his own controversy after publicly approving of a film that boasts anti-Semitic talking points. Recently, Irving issued an apology.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

In a tweet where he shared Irvingโ€™s recent run-in with the press, West added, โ€œJOHN 19:19 โ€˜And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was,
JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.’โ€ In another, he added, โ€œIโ€™m taking a 30 day cleanse A verbal fast No alcohol No adult films No intercourse In god we praise Amen But my Twitter still lit.โ€

West also took aim at his former personal trainer, Harley Pasternak, who cut ties with the rapper within the last few weeks. Texts between the two men appeared on Twitter and in them, Pasternak seemed to be arguing with West about his claim to Jewish heritage as well as threatening that Ye could be institutionalized and medicated again.

It was here that Ye write: โ€œWhat should be obvious by now is that I was raised to stand for my truth regardless of the consequences So I will say this again I was mentally misdiagnosed and nearly drugged out of my mind to make me a manageable will behaved celebrity.โ€

Check out some screenshots below and be prepared for much more from Kanye West on Twitter.

Kanye West Storms Off From Saintโ€™s Soccer Game After Argument With A Parent.

Advertisements

Kanye West left his son Saintโ€™s soccer game on Monday after getting involved in a heated argument with the parent of another one of the players. In a video of the incident obtained by TMZ, an animated West can be seen flailing his arms around in frustration with another attendee.

A few minutes after the altercation, West returned to the crowd having cooled off, and watched the rest of the game without incident

Advertisements

Kim Kardashian was also at the event and could be seen sitting off to the side in a lawn chair surrounded by security. Itโ€™s been reported that Kim and Kanye arenโ€™t talking after Westโ€™s recent behavior, which included wearing a โ€œWhite Lives Matterโ€ shirt to their daughter Northโ€™s basketball game.

The incident comes as West has been suspended from Instagram for the next 30 days. Meta confirmed the restriction on Yeโ€™s account in a statement provided to Complex on Monday.

โ€œWe deleted content from @kanyewest for violating our policies and placed a restriction on the account,โ€ a Meta spokesperson said via email. โ€œWe may place restrictions on accounts that repeatedly break our rules, for example, we may temporarily restrict them from posting, commenting, or sending DMs.โ€

After being restricted on Instagram, earlier this month, Ye infamously threatened to go โ€œdeath con 3โ€ on Jewish people on Twitter.

While heโ€™s off Instagram once again, West has spoken about his desire to purchase Parler in recent weeks, however, after losing out on numerous brand deals, his net worth has dropped from $2 billion down to $400 million, according to Forbes.

Kanye West’s Adidas Termination: Whatโ€™s Next For The Yeezy Brand.

Advertisements

Less than two months ago, we examined the relationship between Kanye West and Adidas. At the time of our deep dive, Kanye was engaged in an all-out social media assault against the German company. Every single day, he was going to his Instagram account, yelling into the void and telling us why we needed to support him in his mission to get out of his Adidas deal.

Ye made some very interesting claims about the brand, noting that they were releasing Yeezy silhouettes and colorways without his permission. The legendary artist felt as though he had no more control over the Yeezy name, and that Adidas was ultimately ruining his vision. Ye spoke of oversaturation, breach of intellectual property, and a lack of ownership over his own work. His goal was to take Yeezy back for himself and transform the brand into what he always wanted it to be. Given recent events, however, that goal might be impossible to achieve.

Thanks to a seemingly endless news cycle of antisemitism, bigotry, and promotion of white supremacy, Kanye was dropped by Adidas. In addition to this, he was dropped by his agency, Jaylen Brown and Aaron Donald left Donda Sports, and his Donda Doves were banned from a tournament.

Ye has left his legacy in shambles. At this point, there are very few people left in his inner circle. Those who do stick by him, simply do so because heโ€™s buying their failed social media platforms. Despite all of this, he got what he wanted. His Adidas deal has been terminated.

As the saying goes: be careful what you wish for. Unfortunately for Kanye, losing his Adidas deal means he is no longer a billionaire, and it also means that he will need to rebuild the Yeezy brand from scratch. When Adidas announced it was cutting ties with Ye, they revealed that they owned every single Yeezy design, except for the Adidas Yeezy Foam Runner. This means that Adidas is allowed to sell Yeezy sneakers without the Yeezy branding. As it turns out, that is exactly what they plan to do. More importantly, it also means that Kanye cannot release these designs independently. If he does, he opens himself up to a massive lawsuit, and Adidas has the money to litigate him out of the building.

Advertisements

Moving forward, if Kanye wants to continue the Yeezy name, he will have to come out with a ton of new designs, which isnโ€™t easy. This will be a gradual process, and given the damage he has done to his reputation, he might not even be able to get distribution on these shoes. Without Adidas, he will now have to find his own assembly lines, his own warehouses, his own shipping company, and most importantly, heโ€™ll have to regain the trust of his fans.

After making inflammatory comments about George Floyd while also wanting to go โ€œDefcon 3โ€ on Jewish people, it should be noted that people just donโ€™t want to buy what Yeโ€™s selling. Sure, there are some people who will still support him no matter what, but heโ€™s done irreparable damage to himself. It will be infinitely harder for him to sell his shoes moving forward, and without the backing of a major company, Ye could be in trouble. Whether it be through Adidas, Nike, GAP, or Balenciaga, Kanye has always had a huge brand to give him resources. Itโ€™s likely he will never have those resources again, which puts Kanye in new territory. He doesnโ€™t have the credibility he once did, and as a result, Yeezy is in for a long period of hibernation.

In todayโ€™s world, social media chews you up and spits you out fast. If your music isnโ€™t good, youโ€™re discarded. If you donโ€™t release tracks fast enough, people forget about you. If your brand stops producing goods, people move on to new brands and new products. This means Kanye has to get Yeezy up and running immediately, and there is simply no infrastructure for him to do so.

Now, this is Kanye we are talking about here so maybe we are completely wrong. It is completely feasible that he has something up his sleeve here. Heโ€™s proven people wrong before, and he could most certainly do it again. Itโ€™s just that this time seems different. From the white supremacist t-shirts to the Fox News appearances to the antisemitism, it feels like Kanye really has โ€œdone it this time.โ€

If youโ€™re a sneakerhead and you still want your Yeezy fix, youโ€™ll be happy to know that Adidas is going to continue releasing the classics. From the Adidas Yeezy 750 to the Adidas Yeezy 700 โ€œWave Runner,โ€ Ye and Adidas gave us some truly amazing sneakers. Despite all thatโ€™s happened, itโ€™s nice to see that these designs wonโ€™t just die out.

As for Ye, the path to redemption will be a long and arduous one. While he has delivered some forced apologies here and there, he is showing no signs of toning down his rhetoric. Until he does, there is very little hope for a Yeezy resurgence.

Consequence Backs Kanye West, Calls Out Talib Kweli.

Advertisements

Consequence showed his support of Kanye West on Wednesday (October 26) while calling out Talib Kweli for criticizing the rapper over his recent Drink Champs appearance. During the interview, Ye blamed George Floydโ€™s death on fentanyl and made several antisemitic remarks.

Taking to Twitter, Cons fired off several posts about Yeโ€™s current circumstance. It has been a tense few weeks for the Rap mogul as he finds his business dealings falling, one after another. โ€œIโ€™ve stood with YE for 20 years and have always had his back,โ€ Consequence wrote.

He continued, โ€œHe trust me more than ANYBODY. Part of that is seeing things for what they are. Whether G.O.O.D. or Bad. Then from there making sure WE are moving in the right direction. I said what I saidโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s Talib Kweli Day on my IG Page today,โ€ Cons added in another post. โ€œIma FRY THIS BITCH ASS N***A.โ€

Was at Chris Rock + Dave Chappelle telling me he donโ€™t want No Smoke with YE but then wanna be an Internet Thug in the comments. Maybe thatโ€™s what got you Banned from Twitter dummy.โ€

From there, Consequence shared a screenshot of an email invite he received to appear on Kweliโ€™s podcast, Peopleโ€™s Party.

Kweli issued a response by writing: โ€œSo wait @constv you see racist trolls trying to weaponize you against me and instead of calling that bullshit out, you falsely accuse me of โ€˜internet thugginโ€™ all because I stated that Iโ€™m not frightened of you? That tells me that your goal was to frighten me. Letโ€™s be clear. Iโ€™m not scared of you at all. Nobody is.โ€

Kanye West Claims Jay-Z Intervened During Drake-Diddy Altercation.

Advertisements

Kanye Westโ€™s press run continues as his talent agency CAA and Adidas distance themselves from him. This week, the Yeezy founder sat down with Lex Fridman for an in-depth interview that covered everything from his recent anti-Semitic remarks, his presidential campaign, Yeezy brand, and, of course, Drake.

Advertisements

At one point, Ye reflected on the Yeezy season 1 runway show and dropped previously unknown details about an alleged altercation between Drake and Diddy. While itโ€™s no secret that there has been tension between the two in the past, namely over the โ€œ0-100โ€ beat, Kanye alleged that the two got into a little bit of a tussle before Jay-Z intervened.

โ€œThis fashion show was so popular that Justin Bieber had to sit in the second row, right?โ€ he said. โ€œThis thing had every name you could think of โ€” it had Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Kendall Jenner. It was Kylieโ€™s first fashion show โ€ฆ You had JAY-Z in the audience, Rihanna in the audience, Beyonceฬ in the audience, sitting next to Anna Wintour.โ€

โ€œYou had Puff Daddy. At that time, Puff Daddy had beef with Drake. Drake still came to the show and JAY-Z had to break up the fight backstage,โ€ he continued. However, he didnโ€™t provide any further details regarding the incident.

The known confrontation between Drake and Diddy reportedly took place at Club LIV in Miami during DJ Khaledโ€™s birthday celebration. Diddy denied that it ever got physical but the two did end up making amends three months after the Yeezy season 1 runway show in May 2015.

It seems unlikely that Diddy, Drake or Hov will corroborate Yeโ€™s story anytime soon. Weโ€™ll keep you posted if any of the parties involved chime in on the matter.

#BLM: Candace Owens threatens to sue George Floyd’s family.

Years after they endured a loss that sparked global protests, the loved ones of George Floyd are in the thick of another controversy. The cameraphone video of Floydโ€™s life ending after former officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes became a viral phenomenon. People were outraged to hear Floyd cry out and say he couldnโ€™t breathe, and the public took to the streets to fight against an unjust system. Watch Clips Here

Meanwhile, there were those who saw Floydโ€™s death as unpreventable. Despite Chauvin being convicted of his actions, Candace Owens has long supported the police in these instances of excessive force. Recently, as she and Kanye West have been touting their rekindled friendship for a social media stage in White Lives Matter shirts, they both have made controversial remarks about Floydโ€™s death. Kanye West shades supremeโ€™s Tremaine Emory with new t-shirt while out on date.

After facing so much backlash for speaking their mind, many people would hide away or conform to societyโ€™s ideals for them, but Kanye West continues to walk apart from the crowd with pride, shutting down haters who have been sharing their criticism about the father of fourโ€™s anti-Semitic comments over the past week or so.

While platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and now even Drink Champs, have begun to censor Yeโ€™s thoughts, it was reported on Monday (October 17), that heโ€™s in talks to buy a conservative social media platform called Parler in whatโ€™s been labelled as a โ€œgroundbreakingโ€ deal.

Even with all this chaos happening in his life, the Graduation hitmaker has still made time to pursue his latest fling โ€“ 24-year-old Brazilian-born model Juliana Nalรบ โ€“ who he was spotted out on the town with this past weekend.

As Page Six notes, for his outfit of the night on Saturday (October 15), West wore a custom short-sleeve white T-shirt, complete with a cartoon drawing of Supremeโ€™s Creative Director (who heโ€™s been beefing with as of late, among countless others), Tremaine Emory, complete with his โ€œTremendezโ€ nickname written above it.

The doodle of the cartoon creative is complete with his mouth being covered by a white personโ€™s hand, their sleeve evidently containing stars and stripes from the American flag.

It seems the root cause of West and Emoryโ€™s issues lies in one of the formerโ€™s recent Instagram rants, during which he accused LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault of killing his late โ€œbest friend,โ€ Virgil Abloh.

In response to his, the Supreme head wrote, โ€œYou knew Virgil had terminal cancer and you rode on him in group chats, at Yeezy, interviewsโ€ฆ YOU ARE SO BROKEN. KEEP VIRGIL NAME OUT YOUR MOUTH.โ€

Patrick Lyoya death: Black man shot in head by Michigan police.

Advertisements

ABlack man facedown on the ground was fatally shot in the back of the head by a Michigan police officer, the violent climax of a traffic stop, brief foot chase and struggle over a stun gun, according to videos of the April 4 encounter.

Patrick Lyoya, 26, was killed outside a house in Grand Rapids. The white officer repeatedly ordered Lyoya to โ€œlet goโ€ of his Taser, at one point demanding: โ€œDrop the Taser!โ€

Citing a need for transparency, the cityโ€™s new police chief, Eric Winstrom, on Wednesday released four videos, including critical footage of the shooting recorded by a passenger in Lyoya’s car on that rainy morning.

more on AMERICA
————————————–

โ€œI view it as a tragedy. โ€ฆ It was a progression of sadness for me,โ€ said Winstrom, a former high-ranking Chicago police commander who became Grand Rapids chief in March. The city of about 200,000 people is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.

Video shows Lyoya running from the officer who stopped him for driving with a license plate that didn’t belong to the vehicle. They struggled in front of several homes while Lyoya’s passenger got out and watched.

Winstrom said the fight over the Taser lasted about 90 seconds. In the final moments, the officer was on top of Lyoya, kneeling on his back at times to subdue him.

โ€œFrom my view of the video, Taser was deployed twice. Taser did not make contact,” Winstrom told reporters. โ€œAnd Mr. Lyoya was shot in the head. However, thatโ€™s the only information that I have.โ€

State police are investigating. Kent Countyโ€™s chief medical examiner, Dr. Stephen Cohle, said he completed the autopsy but toxicology tests werenโ€™t finished.

The traffic stop was tense from the start. The video shows Lyoya, a native of Congo, getting out of the car before the officer approached. He ordered Lyoya to get back in the vehicle, but the man declined.

The officer asked him if he spoke English and demanded his driver’s license. The foot chase began soon after, the video shows.

Winstrom didn’t identify the officer, a seven-year veteran, is on paid leave during the investigation.

โ€œMe being from Chicago for the last 20 years, Iโ€™ve handled many police shootings myself, so I do have a lot of experience in this,โ€ the chief said. “I was hoping to never have to utilize that experience here.โ€

The video was collected from Lyoya’s passenger, the officer’s body camera, the officer’s patrol car and a doorbell camera. Prosecutor Chris Becker, who will decide whether any charges are warranted, objected to the release but said Winstrom could act on his own.

Becker said the public shouldnโ€™t expect a quick decision.

โ€œWhile the videos released today are an important piece of evidence, they are not all of the evidence,โ€ he said.

The officer’s body camera was turned off before the shooting, which happens when a button is pushed for three seconds, Winstrom said. He said it appears it was deactivated unintentionally due to body pressure during the struggle, but he would not discuss any official statements about it.

โ€œThat will come out once the investigation’s complete,โ€ Winstrom said.

City Manager Mark Washington warned that the videos would lead to โ€œexpressions of shock, of anger and of pain.โ€ Several hundred protesters gathered outside the Grand Rapids Police Department following the release of the videos, with some cursing and shouting from behind barricades. The group demanded that officials make public the officer’s name in the shooting.

Some businesses closed early Wednesday. Some boarded-up windows. But the demonstration remained nonviolent.

Lyoya had two young daughters and five siblings, said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who spoke to his family.

โ€œHe arrived in the United States as a refugee with his family fleeing violence. He had his whole life ahead of him,โ€ Whitmer, a Democrat, said.

Prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, speaking on behalf of Lyoya’s family, on Wednesday called for the officer to be fired and prosecuted.

โ€œThe video clearly shows that this was an unnecessary, excessive, and fatal use of force against an unarmed Black man who was confused by the encounter and terrified for his life,โ€ Crump said in a release.

โ€œIt should be noted that Patrick never used violence against this officer even though the officer used violence against him in several instances for what was a misdemeanor traffic stop,โ€ he added.

Crump and Lyoya’s family were expected to hold a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Winstrom last week said he met Lyoya’s father, Peter Lyoya, and that they both cried.

โ€œI get it as a father. โ€ฆ It’s just heart-wrenching,” the chief told WOOD-TV.

As in many U.S. cities, Grand Rapids police have been occasionally criticized over the use of force, particularly against Black people, who make up 18% of the population.

In November, the Michigan Supreme Court heard arguments in a lawsuit over the practice of photographing and fingerprinting people who were never charged with a crime. Grand Rapids said the policy changed in 2015.

A downtown street has been designated Breonna Taylor Way, named for the Black woman and Grand Rapids native who was killed by police in Louisville, Kentucky, during a botched drug raid in 2020.

Outcry as video of US police tackling black teen after mall fight.

Avideo of United States police violently tackling a Black teenager during a mall fight with a young white man has sparked outrage, prompting the state’s governor to condemn what appeared to be “racially disparate treatment.”

The video โ€“ posted earlier this week by the platform Storyful and picked up by ABC, CBS and CNN โ€“ shows a fistfight breaking out between two teenagers at a shopping mall in Bridgewater, New Jersey, a suburb of New York city.

After about 10 seconds, two police officers arrive and forcefully separate the teens.

But while the Black teenager is violently thrown on the floor by one police officer, the young white man is simply made to sit on a sofa.

A police officer is then seen putting her knee on the back of the young Black man as he lies flat on his stomach, while the male police officer handcuffs him.

“They basically tackle me to the ground and then the one โ€“ the male officer put his knee in my back and then he starts putting me in cuffs,” the Black teen, who gave his name as Kye, told ABC.

“And then the female officer came over and put her knee on my upper back too and started helping putting cuffs on me.”

The video does not show the rest of the arrest of the Black teenager, nor what became of the young white man who was not arrested.

Police in Bridgewater Township acknowledged on Facebook that the video had “made members of our community upset” and promised an internal investigation.

A spokesperson for the New Jersey attorney general said their office was assisting an investigation launched by the local prosecutor’s office.

“The attorney general’s office is committed to ensuring thorough, fair, and independent investigations of police use-of-force incidents and police conduct,” said the spokesperson.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy publicly condemned the police action.

“Although an investigation is still gathering the facts about this incident, I’m deeply disturbed by what appears to be racially disparate treatment in this video,” he tweeted on Tuesday.

Racism in law enforcement is a lightning rod issue in the United States, with young Black men at much greater risk from police violence than white men.

Viral footage of the police killing of George Floyd, a Black man, in 2020 sparked nationwide protests and calls for reform of law enforcement.

Steffie Bartley, Northeast Regional Director of the anti-racist National Action Network, condemned what he called the “implicit bias” seen in the Bridgewater video.

“Why was the young Black man on the ground with handcuffs while the young white man was sitting on the couch as if he were overseeing?” he said in a statement.

There’s nothing wrong in viral Daniel Prude video โ€“ Fmr Police Chief says.

On Friday, he said he was asked to โ€œprovide false information to support her narrative.โ€

Rochesterโ€™s former police chief said he did not initially see anything โ€œegregiousโ€ in body camera video of officers restraining Daniel Prude, the Black man who died after being held down naked on a city street last winter.

Advertisements

Laโ€™Ron Singletary, who was fired by the mayor after the videoโ€™s public release, answered questions Friday in a livestreamed, hourslong deposition about the cityโ€™s handling of the case. The city councilโ€™s fact-finding review is separate from an ongoing grand jury investigation into Prudeโ€™s death.

The video shows Prude handcuffed and naked with a spit hood over his head as an officer pushes his face against the ground, while another officer presses a knee to his back in the early morning of March 23. The officers held him down for about two minutes until he stopped breathing. He was taken off life support a week later.

Singletary said he spoke twice to Mayor Lovely Warren on March 23 and by then, he had watched some of the body camera footage from the scene, according to the Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester.

“It appeared that there was nothing egregious at that point in time,โ€ Singletary said he told Warren. โ€œI explained to the mayor that we were going to be doing an investigation. I told the mayor there were no strikes, there were no punches with regard to the video.โ€

The county medical examiner listed the manner of death as homicide caused by โ€œcomplications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraintโ€ and cited PCP as a contributing factor.

The Prude family held a news conference and released the video on Sept. 2, sparking nightly protests in Rochester.

Singletary claimed in legal papers filed in December that Warren urged him to omit facts and give false information to back her claim that it wasnโ€™t until months later that she learned key details of the police encounter that led to Prudeโ€™s death.

On Friday, he said he was asked to โ€œprovide false information to support her narrative.โ€

The city released a statement Friday saying Singletary โ€œdownplayed what occurred from the very beginning through today, and believes that neither he nor anyone in the Rochester Police Department, did anything wrong.โ€

Black Lives Matter proposed Nobel Peace Prize โ€“ Report

Advertisements

Tens of thousands of people, including MPs and ministers from all countries, former Nobel laureates and distinguished academics, can propose candidates for the various Nobel prizes.

Black Lives Matter, a movement which became a rallying cry after the killing by US police of an unarmed black man, has been proposed for the Nobel Peace Prize, a Norwegian MP said Saturday.

Founded in the United States in 2013, the movement received an impetus in May after George Floyd died.

A white policeman had knelt on Floydโ€™s neck for eight minutes ignoring Floydโ€™s pleas that he couldnโ€™t breathe.

The incident fuelled protests in the United States that sped across the world.

โ€œThis movement has become one of the strongest global movements for working with racial injustice,โ€ Petter Eide, a socialist lawmaker who proposed BLM for the Peace Prize, told AFP.

โ€œThey have also been spread to many many countries, building upโ€ฆ awareness on the importance of fighting racial injustice,โ€ he said.

The deadline ends on Sunday.

Several other names have been mooted for the Peace Prize including controversial Wikileaks founder and whistleblower Julian Assange, former US president Donald Trump, media rights group RSF and a trio of Belarusian opposition leaders led by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.

The Nobel prizes will be announced at the start of October. This yearโ€™s prize went to the World Food Programme, the UN food agency.

Just in: White professor who pretended to be Black admits being fake.

Advertisements

Social media reacts as African, Caribbean and diaspora history professor in US refers to herself as a ‘culture leech’.

A white professor who teaches African, Caribbean and diaspora history pretended to be a Black woman for years, reigniting a debate about the appropriation of race and identity in the United States.

Jessica Krug, who teaches at George Washington University in Washington, DC admitted in a blog post on Medium that for the better part of her adult life, “every move Iโ€™ve made, every relationship Iโ€™ve formed, has been rooted in the napalm toxic soil of lies”.

George Washington University on Thursday said Krug’s revelations were now being investigated.

Krug wrote: “To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness.

“I have built my life on a violent anti-Black lie, and I have lied in every breath I have taken.”

Krug cited her childhood trauma as a “likely explanation” for her behaviour.

“But mental health issues can never, will never, neither explain nor justify, neither condone nor excuse, that, in spite of knowing and regularly critiquing any and every non-Black person who appropriates from Black people, my false identity was crafted entirely from the fabric of Black lives,” Krug said.

“I am not a culture vulture. I am a culture leech โ€ฆ I am a coward.”

Jessica Krug [George Washington University/Screenshot]

Krug’s admission led to debate on social media.

Yarimar Bonilla, a former colleague of Krug’s, said there “was always something off with her”.

“She always dressed/acted inappropriately – she’d show up to a 10am scholars’ seminar dressed for a salsa club etc – but was so over the top strident and ‘woker-than-though’ that I felt like I was trafficking in respectability politics when I cringed at her minstrel show,” Bonilla posted on Twitter.

Leslie Mac, an activist and digital strategist, said Krug’s actions showed that “white women continually harm our communities and are rewarded for their efforts”.

Krug’s history of deception about her identity is similar to the case of Rachel Dolezal – a white woman from Spokane, Washington, who publicly identified herself as Black.

In 2015, when Dolezal was outed, she was president of the Spokane branch of the NAACP, a civil rights organisation, and a a part-time African studies teacher at a local university. She lost both positions after her fabrications were made public.

Dolezal, who said she started identifying as Black around the age of five, was a graduate from Howard University, an historically Black institute, which she sued in 2002 for discrimination against white people and for favouring African American students.

Daniel Prude: Killer cop suspended. #BLM

Daniel Prude’s family calls for the arrest of the police officers involved in death by asphyxiation.

The police officers involved in the arrest and asphyxiation death of a Black man in New York state have been suspended, the mayor of Rochester said on Thursday, one day after harrowing footage of the March incident was released.

Daniel Prude’s family on Wednesday released body camera footage from his arrest in March in Rochester, in upstate New York, which showed a group of officers putting a hood over Prude’s head as he knelt on the ground, handcuffed and naked.

Local newspaper Democrat and Chronicle reported on Thursday that Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren had ordered the “immediate suspension” of seven police officers involved in the incident. The newspaper did not identify the officers.

“Mr Daniel Prude was failed by our police department, our mental healthcare system, our society, and he was failed by me,” Warren told reporters. “We cannot continue to fail Black lives in this way.”

Prude’s family has called for the arrest of the officers involved in his death, which came seven days after the incident. Prude was 41.

Advertisements

The Monroe County medical examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint”, according to an autopsy report, the New York Times reported.

Prude’s asphyxiation occurred two months before the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, which spurred international protests against police brutality and racial injustice in the US.

Prude’s family obtained video of the arrest after filing a freedom of information act request, CBS-affiliate WROC-TV reported.

The video prompted protests in Rochester on Wednesday, with dozens of people calling for the police to be held accountable and removed from the department while the investigation proceeds. Nine protesters were arrested, according to the local Democrat and Chronicle newspaper.

Several dozen people also held a demonstration in Times Square in New York City, 300 miles to the south, on Thursday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called for “expeditious” answers.

“For the sake of Mr Prude’s family and the greater Rochester community, I am calling for this case to be concluded as expeditiously as possible. For that to occur, we need the full and timely cooperation of the Rochester Police Department and I trust it will fully comply,” Cuomo said.

The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James is investigating, as state law requires whenever police are involved in a civilian’s death.

Advertisements

“The Prude family and the greater Rochester community deserve answers, and we will continue to work around the clock to provide them,” James said in a statement.

In the video, an officer placed a “spit hood” over Prude’s head – apparently to prevent his spit from possibly transmitting the novel coronavirus.

Prude could be heard shouting, “Take this โ€ฆ off my face!” and “You’re trying to kill me!” before his shouts turned to cries and became muffled. Officers were heard saying “Calm down” and “stop spitting”.

Later, the video showed an officer kneeling on Prude’s back while Prude was silent and snow fell around them. Someone was heard saying, “start CPR”. Minutes later, the video showed Prude being loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher.

Rochester police chief La’Ron Singletary told reporters on Wednesday that internal and criminal investigations were under way.

“I know that there’s a rhetoric that is out there that this is a cover-up. This is not a cover-up,” Singletary said.

Warren, the mayor, said Thursday that Singletary failed to provide her with the full details of what happened during the March incident until early August, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

“The only way we can confront systemic racism in our city is to face it head-on,” Warren said, as reported by the newspaper. “There can not be a justice system for white people and a justice system for Black people.”

Jacob Blake: Joe Biden speaks on assault amid Kenosha, Wisconsin visit. #BLM

Advertisements

Biden’s trip comes two days after President Trump condemned violent protesters there.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Thursday spoke with Jacob Blake, a Black man whose shooting by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, two weeks ago led to days of violent protests.

“I had an opportunity to spend some time with Jacob on the phone. He’s out of (intensive care), we spoke for about 15 minutes,” Biden told a community meeting at a church in Kenosha.

“He talked about how nothing was going to defeat him, how whether he walked again or not, he was not going to give up.”

Upon landing in Milwaukee, which is about 72km (45 miles) north of Kenosha, Biden met Blake’s father, Jacob Blake Sr, his siblings, and one of his lawyers, B’Ivory LaMarr. Blake, Blake’s mother Julia Jackson and another lawyer, Ben Crump, joined by phone. Blake remains hospitalised after being shot seven times in the back by a white Kenosha police officer as authorities tried to arrest him.

Trump denies systemic racism, pushes ‘law and order’ in Kenosha

Biden, who US President Donald Trump has said would be “weak” in dealing with rioters, framed his visit to Kenosha as an effort to unify the country after months of protests demanding racial justice.

“We’re finally now getting to the point where we’re going to be addressing the original sin of this country, 400 years old โ€ฆ slavery and all the vestiges of it,” Biden said during a community discussion at Grace Lutheran Church in Kenosha with business and civic leaders and at least two representatives of law enforcement.

“I can’t say if tomorrow God made me president, I can’t guarantee you everything gets solved in four years,” Biden said. But “it would be a whole better, we’d get a whole lot further down the road” if Trump isn’t re-elected.

Advertisements

“There’s certain things worth losing over,” he concluded, “and this is something worth losing over if you have to โ€” but we’re not going to lose.”

Biden’s visit to Kenosha came two days after Trump toured the city, albeit with a much different agenda, one that did not include a meeting with the Blake family or even a public mention of Blake’s name, for that matter.

Trump, who defied requests by the city’s mayor and Democratic Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers not to visit, instead emphasised his “law and order” campaign theme, calling the violence “domestic terror” and “anti-American”.

Protests broke out in cities across the US following the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in police custody, with some of them turning violent.

Advertisements

On August 23, a policeman shot Blake in the back seven times, sparking civil unrest that attracted groups of white men carrying weapons.

Two nights after Blake was shot, two protesters were shot dead and another wounded allegedly by 17-year old Kyle Rittenhouse, from neighbouring Antioch, Illinois.

A video appeared to show Rittenhouse shooting protesters in two separate incidents, killing two white men and wounding a third, and making Kenosha a flashpoint in the presidential campaign.

Trump and fellow Republicans may feel that the violence in Kenosha could have a political impact in that battleground state.

Advertisements

Unlike protests in large cities such as Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; New York City and Chicago, which are all surrounded by areas that tend to vote Democratic and are generally not factors in deciding presidential elections, Kenosha is in a county where Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 238 votes in 2016 and in a state that he won by 22,748 votes, a less than 1 percent margin.

Biden’s critics, including Trump, have aimed to paint him as “weak” on crime and argued he will not stand up to rioters, forcing Biden, whose advisers are acutely aware of the electoral importance of Wisconsin, to respond multiple times this week, culminating in Thursday’s trip to Kenosha.

Republicans’ hopes – and Democrats’ fears – that Biden’s polling lead over Trump would be negatively affected by Trump’s “law and order” focus, have not been confirmed as of yet. Polling out this week showed Biden’s lead nationally and in several battleground states generally holding steady.

In addition, a Media poll of Wisconsin voters (known to Noble Reporters Media) released on Wednesday revealed that voters there prefer Biden over Trump by 5 percentage points to handle policing and criminal justice.

Deon Kay: Washington DC police release video of ‘brutal shooting’ of young black man. #BLM

Shooting of Deon Kay prompted protests in US capital amid increased nationwide scrutiny over police.

Police in Washington, DC, on Thursday released body camera footage of the fatal shooting of a young Black man in the city’s southeast, which ignited protests in the US capital.

The killing on Wednesday of 18-year-old Deon Kay prompted a late-night face-off between the police and dozens of protesters outside a city police station.

Chanting “say his name”, “Deon Kay” and “no justice, no sleep”, protesters on Thursday marched to Mayor Muriel Bowser’s residence, calling on her to fire the Washington, DC police chief, local television news station NBC4 reported.

The killing comes amid a nationwide protest movement decrying police violence against Black people and increased nationwide and local scrutiny over police tactics.

Advertisements

In a news conference on Thursday, Bowser offered her condolences to Kay’s family and said an investigation was under way.

“Our community is hurting and we know that they want answers,” she said. “We are still gathering all the facts and [the Metropolitan Police Department] and my administration will conduct a full investigation of this incident.”

The Washington, DC police department said Kay had “brandished a firearm” at officers.

Advertisements

The chief of the MPD, Peter Newsham, on Thursday said Kay was one of two people who fled when approached by uniformed officers who were investigating reports of a man with a gun in the area.

“Two individuals fled on foot and officers pursued them, one of those men brandished a firearm from his waistband as he was fleeing,” Newsham said during the news conference.

“In response, an MPD officer discharged his service weapon firing a single shot at the individual.”

Police said the other man, who escaped from police, and Kay were taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Advertisements

In a statement on Wednesday, police included pictures of the handgun they said Kay had been carrying, as well as of the gun of another of his companions who was arrested.

The local Black Lives Matter affiliate called for immediate protests outside the MPD’s 7th District headquarters, stating in a tweet: “DC police murdered a Black man today.”

On Wednesday night, videos posted on social media showed dozens of enraged protesters jostling with a line of police officers, who used bicycles to help form a barrier in front of the station.

Police killings of Black people have sparked nationwide protests and calls for sweeping police reform, prompting local efforts by the DC Council to bring greater transparency to such incidents.

In June, following the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis, the council passed emergency legislation requiring the MPD to release any body camera footage from fatal shootings or use-of-force incidents within five days.

The department must also release the names of the officers involved.

In July, the city released body camera footage from three separate fatal incidents dating back to 2018.

Kay’s shooting also comes after the release of a video showing a deadly incident involving police in Rochester, New York.

Daniel Prude, a Black man, died of suffocation in March after a group of police officers put a hood over his head and then pressed his face into the pavement for two minutes. Prude died seven days after the incident occurred when he was taken off life support.

Daniel Prude: Police suffocates ‘Black Man’ to death in Rochester, United States

Video of March encounter shows police put hood on Daniel Prude and pinned him down to the pavement for two minutes.

A Black man died of suffocation in Rochester, United States, in March after a group of police officers put a hood over his head and then pressed his face into the pavement for two minutes, according to video and records released by the man’s family.

Daniel Prude died on March 30 after he was taken off life support, seven days after the encounter with police in Rochester, New York state.

His death did not receive public attention until Wednesday, when his family held a news conference and released police body camera video and written reports they obtained through a public records request.

Prude’s brother, Joe, said he called 911 on March 23 after his sibling, who was visiting from Chicago, ran out of their home in an erratic state. Just the day before, Rochester police had taken Daniel Prude into custody for a mental health evaluation after he reported suicidal thoughts.

“I placed a phone call for my brother to get help. Not for my brother to get lynched,” Joe Prude said at a news conference.

“How did you see him and not directly say, ‘The man is defenceless, buck naked on the ground. He’s cuffed up already. Come on.’ How many more brothers gotta die for society to understand that this needs to stop?”

‘Trying to kill me’
The videos show Prude, who had taken off his clothes, complying when police ask him to get on the ground and put his hands behind his back. Prude is agitated and shouting as he sits on the pavement in handcuffs for a few moments as a light snow falls. “Give me your gun, I need it,” he shouts.

Then, they put a white “spit hood” over his head, a device intended to protect officers from a detainee’s saliva. At the time, New York was in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Prude demands they remove it.

Then the officers slam Prude’s head into the street. One officer, who is white, holds his head down against the pavement with both hands, saying “calm down” and “stop spitting”. Another officer places a knee on his back.

“Trying to kill me!” Prude says, his voice becoming muffled and anguished under the hood.

“OK, stop. I need it. I need it,” the prone man begs before his shouts turn to whimpers and grunts.

The officers appear to become concerned after he stops moving, falls silent and they notice water coming out of Prude’s mouth.

“My man. You puking?” one says.

One officer notes that he’s been out, naked, in the street for some time. Another remarks, “He feels pretty cold.”

His head had been held down by an officer for just over two minutes, the video shows.

The officers then remove the hood and his handcuffs and medics can then be seen performing CPR before he is loaded into an ambulance.

A medical examiner concluded that Prude’s death was a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint”. The report lists excited delirium and acute intoxication by phencyclidine, or PCP, as contributing factors.

Protests
The death is now under investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

It occurred two months before the police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man who died on May 25 after a policeman knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Rochester activists on Wednesday demanded that the police involved in Prude’s death be prosecuted on murder charges and that they be removed from the department while the investigation proceeds.

“The police have shown us over and over again that they are not equipped to handle individuals with mental health concerns. These officers are trained to kill, and not to de-escalate. These officers are trained to ridicule, instead of supporting Mr Daniel Prude,” Ashley Gantt of Free the People ROC said at the news conference with Prude’s family.

Later in the day, dozens of protesters gathered outside Rochester’s Public Safety Building, which serves as police headquarters, chanting: “Which side are you on?”

Free the People ROC said several of its organisers were briefly taken into custody after they entered the building while Mayor Lovely Warren was speaking to the media.

The mayor described the video showing Prude’s restraint by police as “disturbing”.

“I want everyone to understand that at no point in time did we feel that this was something that we wanted not to disclose,” she told reporters.

“Rest assured that we are going to do everything possible to make sure that the truth comes out and that justice is held here,” she added.

The US continues to grapple with racial injustice as protests continue in several cities in the wake of shootings.

Relative calm returned to Kenosha, Wisconsin, overnight Wednesday into Thursday after two people were shot dead during protests the night before, while unrest in Minneapolis prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency, as the United States continues to grapple with racial injustice.

Kenosha authorities had on Wednesday identified the officer who fired seven shots at the back of Jacob Blake, paralysing the Black man, and sparking anti-racism protests.

After three nights of civil strife – including arson, vandalism and the shootings that killed two people on Tuesday night – calm appeared to take hold in Kenosha.

Violent protests had erupted on Wednesday night in the Midwestern city of Minneapolis, 598km (372 miles) northwest of Kenosha, following the death of a Black homicide suspect who, police say, shot himself.

The governor of Minnesota declared a state of peacetime emergency.

The city has been the centre of protests following the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, who died in May after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Floyd’s death and further violence against Black people have led to broader anti-racism protests and demonstrations against police brutality in cities across the US.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey imposed a curfew following what he described as mass looting of businesses, destruction of property and unrest. Authorities also said misinformation was spread concerning the death of the suspect.

A video posted on social media, which could not be verified immediately by Reuters news agency, showed shots being fired and ransacking of shops.

Minneapolis police posted a surveillance video of the shooting on Twitter, saying that the victim, a suspect in a homicide, committed suicide and that no weapons were fired by police.

The video shows a Black man shooting himself at the entrance of a building as a nearby group of people ran away and police approached the scene.

Other unverified videos posted on social media appeared to show police shooting demonstrators with less-lethal munitions as they moved away from authorities.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared a state of emergency in Minneapolis and said the National Guard would be deployed in the area.

“Dangerous, unlawful behavior will not be tolerated. The Minnesota National Guard and State Patrol are headed to Minneapolis to help restore order,” Walz said in a statement.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul had on Wednesday identified Rusten Sheskey as the white police officer who shot Blake after the latter opened his car door on Sunday. Blake’s three young sons were in the car. Kaul also said investigators found a knife on the floor of Blake’s car.

Rifle-toting civilians had come to Kenosha during the protest, among them 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, who was arrested on Wednesday on homicide charges in connection with Tuesday night’s shootings. Rittenhouse, a police supporter, was arrested at his home in Antioch, Illinois, about 30km (20 miles) away.

Anti-racism protests have become a polarising issue ahead of the November 3 presidential election, which Vice President Mike Pence and other Republicans described as a choice between “law and order” and lawlessness at their national convention on Wednesday.

“The hard truth is you won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America,” Pence told the crowd seated on a lawn at historic Fort McHenry in Baltimore in reference to the Democratic challenger to President Donald Trump.

Teenager charged over killings at Kenosha protest
Police in Portland, Oregon, had on Wednesday declared a demonstration near a US immigration agency building as an “unlawful gathering”, ordering the crowds to disperse. Police said they made 11 arrests in the city which has been the scene of weeks of anti-racism protests and unrest.

Violent protests also erupted in Oakland, California, resulting in the arrests of several people after multiple fires were set during the demonstrations, according to police.

Oakland police said on Twitter a fire was started at the Alameda Superior Court by people who protested in solidarity with Wisconsin demonstrators on Wednesday.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) postponed three play-off games scheduled for Wednesday after the Milwaukee Bucks, protesting against racial injustice, boycotted Game 5 of their play-off series against the Orlando Magic.

NBA players and officials were to meet on Thursday to decide whether the boycott would continue.

Tennis player Naomi Osaka pulled out of the semi-finals of a tennis tournament in Ohio on Wednesday in protest against the shooting of Blake.

Osaka, who has a Japanese mother and a Haitian father and has been a vocal supporter of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, said in a social media post: “Before I am an athlete, I am a Black woman.”
