Tottenham: Conte rules out loan exits for Sarr and one other.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has dismissed the idea of sending Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr, instead predicting big roles in the first team for the young duo for the remainder of the season.

22-year-old academy graduate Skipp started the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace in the absences of the suspended Yves Bissouma and injured Rodrigo Bentancur, with Sarr replacing him off the bench midway through the second half.

The two young talents both made an impression on Conte, who ruled out sending either player on loan and backed both Skipp and Sarr to help out the senior side.

“Skipp and Sarr showed they are really reliable players for me and I’m really happy,” he said. “We exploited the period of the World Cup to work with these young players to improve themselves under the tactical aspect and physical aspect.

“Now they stay with us in the squad. I don’t want to send these young players on loan because the league is very difficult. We have to play Champions League, we have to play FA Cup. I think these young players can stay here to help us face these three competitions.”

Central midfield has been a problem area for Spurs this season. While the combination of Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has earned positive reviews, the lack of senior depth outside of Bissouma has been touted as a concern.

However, with Skipp back from a foot injury and Sarr using the World Cup break to impress his boss, Conte now appears to have found two more dependable options for the remainder of the season as Spurs look to compete on three fronts.

The Spurs boss also had plenty of praise for young forward Bryan Gil, who has impressed in recent weeks as Richarlison, Lucas Moura and Dejan Kulusevski continue to battle injury.

“We are talking about a player who was born to play football,” Conte said of Gil. “He understands football quickly. He’s so clever, so intelligent to understand the situation.

“Then you know this league is difficult, because you have to be good in quality and be fast and to have good endurance and he has this type of quality.”

Son not concerned by poor run of form.

Advertisements

Son Heung-min has vowed he will become a better player for the poor run of form he is currently enduring.

Tottenham have made an unbeaten start to the season, most recently beating Marseille 2-0 on their return to the Champions League, but last year’s star forward Son is yet to score in seven matches.

Manager Antonio Conte has continued to back the South Korea international in his starting XI and Son himself has claimed his poor run is down to bad luck and finishing.

He said: “This is going to make me stronger. This is something I can see will be an improvement because I still have a lot of space for improvement. As a team and as an individual as well. Most important is that we are doing well as a team. I’ll do everything the team needs.

“If I’m honest, if I wasn’t getting chances in the game I would be worried but I’m still getting chances. In some games, there have been unlucky moments. In some games, it has been a bad finish.

“In some games I’m really frustrated because if I have some massive chances and the ball doesn’t go in. It makes me just laugh. But I am not worried about it because the team and the staff and all the fans are helping me.

“I think if I score one the confidence will be back and I hope I can go on and score more goals.”

Son has an excellent record against upcoming opponents Manchester City, scoring once and setting up two more goals in Spurs’ pair of victories against the Premier League champions last season. However, he remains more focused on delivering his part in a good team performance.

“Just because I have a good record against them doesn’t mean I’ll do something great or have magical moments,” Son added. “It doesn’t mean anything. Saturday is a massive game against one of the best teams in the world so we need to prepare for the game really well.

“I’ll do what the team needs. This is my aim. It will be a really difficult game and we are short of time to recover. It’s really important we recover well. Good sleep, good eating. We have to be ready for a big battle.”

Tottenham’s trip to Manchester City on Saturday could be postponed following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Conte urges Tottenham officials to complain about fixture schedule.

Advertisements

Antonio Conte has called on officials higher up at Tottenham to complain about the club’s hectic fixture list.

Spurs are unbeaten in their first six league games but now face a tough run with the return of the Champions League.

They first host Marseille on Wednesday before travelling to English champions Manchester City on Saturday. A trip to Sporting CP next week will conclude a run of three games in six days, having only just finished a similarly packed schedule with games against Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham.

Players are having to deal with increased workloads this season with games crammed in to compensate for the winter World Cup in Qatar.

“Honestly, to see this schedule about Tottenham is incredible, it’s crazy because we played three games in a week against Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham,” Conte said.

“Now we are playing after four days, but we are starting to play again three important games against Marseille in the Champions League, City away and Sporting CP away.

“I think maybe this is the first time in my career to see a schedule like this. Honestly, I try to check the schedule of the other teams and I have seen that in this situation Tottenham are penalised a lot.”

He added: “In this situation we are unlucky, but in the future, and also I spoke with the club, we have to pay great attention to speak to the Premier League because we have to pay attention when there is this type of schedule.

“One day more, one day less can totally change your life and you can drop points. This is no good for a team like Tottenham. When you want to start to think as a winner, you have to take care of the details and the schedule is a detail that is very important for every club, especially for a club that wants to fight for something important. I think we can do much better for the future.”

Spurs are back in the Champions League after a two-season absence and face a Marseille side on Tuesday who have won five of their first six Ligue 1 matches.

Conte wants Harry Kane to sign new contract.

Advertisements

Antonio Conte has admitted he wants Tottenham striker Harry Kane to sign a new contract with the club.

After a dizzying 2021 during which he pushed for a move to Manchester City, the England captain is back at his best and scoring goals for Spurs, helping them up to third in the Premier League with a brace at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

90min revealed back in July that neither Kane nor the club were in a rush to sign a new contract, with his current deal due to expire in 2024. He is happier under Antonio Conte than predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo and the Italian believes the club are trying to get him to pen fresh terms.

He said: “I have to be honest with you: I don’t know, I don’t know about this situation, I don’t know the details, honestly, honestly.

“You know we are talking about an important player for Tottenham. And the desire of everybody into the club is [for Kane] to continue to stay with Tottenham, to sign a new contract.

“But if you ask me about the details, about information, I cannot answer you.”

FA confirm charges for Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte.

Advertisements

The Football Association has confirmed Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte have been charged for improper conduct in the 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham on Sunday.

The pair came to blows during the fiery contest and had to be separated at full time when a handshake turned into a squaring off match.

The FA’s statement reads: “Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte have both been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3, following the Premier League fixture between Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday 14 August 2022.

“It is alleged that the behaviour of both managers was improper following the end of the fixture.

“Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte have until Thursday 18 August 2022 to provide their respective responses.”

Tempers flared initially when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg made it 1-1, with Chelsea asking for both a foul on Kai Havertz and an offside against Richarlison, and Tuchel sprinted past the Spurs dugout when Reece James put the hosts ahead again.

Harry Kane’s 96th-minute equaliser saw the points shared before Tuchel and Conte shared their angry embrace at the full-time whistle.

The pair both seemed to make light of the incident in their post-match comments, though Conte later posted a story on his Instagram account with the caption: “Lucky I didn’t see you…making you trip over would have been well deserved…😂😂😂”

Spurs are next in action when they host Wolves on Saturday, while Chelsea visit Leeds a day later

Antonio Conte says PSG links ‘fake’

Advertisements

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has labelled links with a move to Paris Saint-Germain “fake news”.

While the Italian hinted that his Spurs career could be over after a defeat to Burnley earlier in the season, 90min understands the club remain confident of keeping Conte for the 2022/23 campaign. There have been links with PSG this week, with Mauricio Pochettino expected to leave Paris imminently.

Conte’s appointment saw an upturn in results that led Tottenham into the top four, but disappointing recent performances against Brighton and Brentford have seen Arsenal usurp them in the Champions League race.

Spurs have the chance to put some pressure on Arsenal with victory over Leicester on Sunday, with the Gunners travelling to face West Ham later that day.

What did Conte say about PSG rumours?
The Italian said: “Obviously I think it’s good that other clubs appreciate my work, but this is one thing. The truth is I don’t like when people try to invent news, only to speak, only to create problems. This is not right, this is not fair for the clubs involved or for my players. Also because I feel we’re really focused on these fives games and getting a result.

“This type of situation makes me smile but I think that also the people that want to tell something about this have to show respect for all of the people that are involved in the situation and not invent fake news and tell a lot of lies.”

When asked whether he speaks to Tottenham players about speculation over his future, he added: “In this situation who works in football, players or managers, know very well at this point in the season a lot of fake news starts to go out. We are working very hard, my players know very well that we are really focused, we are speaking a lot about this opportunity.

“We have to live this situation with passion, enthusiasm and joy. We deserve to fight for a place in the Champions League. To stay there we need to enjoy this situation. Our fans have to stay close to us in every moment, in every negative moment.”

Tottenham team news vs Leicester
Left wing back Sergio Reguilon will not be available for Sunday’s clash with Leicester. That will likely mean Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal are deployed out wide, but Conte said he could see January signing Dejan Kulusevski playing there too.

He said: “If now we have Emerson and Sessegnon available I think also Deki can play in this position. I think the best solution is not to change what we’ve been doing for six-seven months. I think this formation can give us great satisfaction. If something else happens then of course I will be forced to find another solution.”

Midfielder Oliver Skipp has been ruled out for the rest of the season. He has just signed a new contract with the club but hasn’t played since January.

On the youngster’s absence, Conte added: “I have spoken to the doctors. They said the surgery was OK and for sure Oliver will be ready for pre-season. It’s a pity and don’t forget we lost two players like Skippy and [Japhet] Tanganga from January and to not have two reliable players like them, it’s not good to manage this situation. It’s not good news.”

Antonio Conte again says would leave Tottenham if vision is unmet.

Advertisements

Antonio Conte has once again suggested that he could leave Tottenham this summer if his ambitions aren’t aligned with that of the board.

Conte’s contract runs until the end of the 2022/23 season but has repeatedly hinted that he may walk away from the club in recent weeks amid Spurs’ poor run of form.

Ahead of their trip to Brighton on Wednesday, the Italian was again quizzed on his future, and he admitted that he may ‘stop’ managing Tottenham if his vision is different to that of the board and managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

“At this moment the best thing we can do is to be focussed on the present,” Conte said. “Then, at the end of the season, everyone has to speak about their own vision.

“I speak about my vision, and I think also the club will speak about their vision, and Paratici will speak about his vision, and then we will see.

“After this we will see, now is too early. We have to be in the present, the future is very far in this moment. For sure there will be a moment when we will go to take decisions.”

Conte added: “Honestly I have my vision and it does not change. The vision was the same in the past, the vision is the same in the present, the vision will be the same in future. The vision will be this. I stop if the vision of someone is not the same.

“I have a vision, one vision: I want to fight to win. I want to fight to be competitive. I want to feel that we need one per cent to win the title or a trophy in which we participate. We have to feel this. This is my vision and I continue to have this vision.

“And then I know that there are different visions and many clubs have different visions but my vision brought me to be competitive and for sure I follow my vision in any case.”

Antonio Conte not worried about Dele Alli.

Advertisements

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is not concerned about the return of Dele Alli to the club on Monday, insisting players usually ‘go down’ once they leave him.

Conte failed to find regular minutes for Dele, who left for Everton in January on a transfer which could be worth in excess of £30m if all the add-ons are met.

The midfielder will travel with his new side to face Spurs on Monday, but Conte was in no mood to discuss the obvious fairytale storyline.

“I don’t remember a player that when he went away, came back with a great spirit of revenge,” Conte said. “Honestly, I don’t remember one.

“During my coaching, I always try to be honest with the players and give all the players the possibility to show me that they deserve to play. I don’t remember a player that had their revenge with me. What happens usually is that when players went away they went down, not up.”

However, Conte did not want to be too tough on Dele and stressed that the 25-year-old still has time to get his career back on track.

When asked why Dele’s career had gone downhill, the boss said: “It is difficult to say something about this, for sure he is still young and his career is in his hands.

“He is very young and he has all the time to take his career again. I really think so.”
