Igbo congress to Malami: โ€œKanu deserves justice.โ€

The World Igbo Congress, WIC, has called on the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, gets justice.

The body was reacting to the Appeal Court in Abuja judgment that ordered the release of Kanu and Justice Evelyn Anyadikeโ€™s Federal High Court judgment against the extraordinary rendition of Kanu on October 26, 2022, in Umuahia.

Among other things, Justice Anyadike had ruled that Kanu should be returned to Kenya prior to his arrest in June 2021.

Despite the courtโ€™s ruling, Kanu is still locked up by the Department of State Services, DSS.

Reacting to the judgment, the Igbo congress urged Malami to sanction Kanuโ€™s release.

The call was made in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Chris Ogara; Basil Onwukwe, PRO; and Anthony Ejiofor, Chairman.

The statement forwarded to Noble Reporters’ known Media by Kanuโ€™s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor reads: โ€œWorld Igbo Congress, on behalf of all Igbo in the Diaspora, extols the judgment delivered on Thursday, October 26, 2022, by the Federal High Court in Umuahia (presided over by Justice Evelyn Anyadike) against the extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu on October 26 2022.

โ€œWorld Igbo Congress sees this monumental judgment as the zenith of โ€œjudicial courageโ€ even as the judicial somersault by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in appealing the freedom already granted to Nnamdi Kanu by the three-man panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja led by Justice Hanatu Sankeyas persists.

โ€œBy this judgment in the Federal Court Umuahia, we see that there is yet hope in the Nigerian Judiciary and we call on the Attorney General to redirect himself by toeing the line of judicial integrity, honor and rule of law to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu receives earned justice.

โ€œOnce again, and in keeping with our statement of October 18, 2022, World Igbo Congress calls on the AGF and the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu now.โ€

Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said the agitator may lose his life in detention.

Ejimakor said Kanuโ€™s heart is failing him, and he is having severe breathing problem.

The counsel lamented that the IPOB leader has not received adequate medical attention in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Ejimakor disclosed this while appealing to the International Red Cross Society to facilitate immediate and independent medical examination of Kanu.

He made the call in a letter entitled โ€˜RE: Urgent Appeal for your humanitarian intervention with the Government of Nigeria to grant Mazi Nnamdi Kanu access to independent medical examination and care.โ€™

In the letter sighted by Noble Reporters Media, Ejimakor urged the Red Cross to โ€œbring your good offices to bear on the Government of Nigeria to grant our client the opportunity of an independent medical examination and care within the shortest possible time.โ€

According to Ejimakor: โ€œOur client informs us that his blood has been drawn more than 20 times without explanation, and that he continues to feel apprehension and dread that he is in custody of those that partook in his extra-ordinary rendition.

โ€œHis health, particularly his heart, is failing him and he was having severe breathing issues; that his fingernails are cracking and he feels dizzy. He told us that he was not receiving the necessary medical care even when the Government of Nigeria is aware from his in-jail medical examination that his heart has enlarged by 13%.

โ€œHe said serious medical problems require the urgent and constant attention of specialist doctors [which are not being given to him in the detention facility]. In this circumstance, he is daily facing the grim and imminent risk of losing his life in detention.โ€

Why DSS DG should be charged for contempt โ€“ Nnamdi Kanuโ€™s lawyer.

Advertisements

Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, pro-Biafra agitator, Ifeanyi Ejiofor has urged the Federal High Court, Abuja, to charge the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, of alleged contempt of court.

Ejiofor said the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court should endorse the contempt charges filed against the DSS DG.

He noted that failure to endorse the charges would mean the court is taking sides with the secret police.

Ejiofor made the call while lamenting the refusal of the DSS to allow Kanu access to his lawyers twice.

In a statement he issued, Ejiofor said the action of the secret police was contrary to the court ruling.

According to Ejiofor: โ€œWith the foregoing, if the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, fails and/or refuses to endorse the relevant contempt forms filed against the Director-General of the DSS for the gross disobedience to positive orders of court, as he has done in the past, then, it will become obvious to the world that the Registrar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, is actively protecting the contemnors.

โ€œOrders of court must be obeyed to the letter and must not only be respected, but must be treated with sanctity. Sadly, this has become a joke taken too far!โ€

Recall with Noble Reporters Media that Kanuโ€™s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor had disclosed that the DSS prevented them from having access to their client twice.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is being detained by the DSS.

Kanu has been in detention after he was repatriated to Nigeria from Kenya.

He is facing charges bordering on terrorism before Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court.
