Adamawa gets new CP.

A new Commissioner of Police has taken over in Adamawa State.

The spokesman for the state police command, Suleiman Nguroje, who confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday in Yola, said the new CP, Afolabi Adeniyi, assumed duty on Friday.

Adeniyi had previously served as Commissioner of Police in charge of Anti Human Trafficking, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The statement read: “The new CP holds Bsc. Mass Communications from the University of Lagos and Masters Degree (MPA) in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.

“He was appointed into the Nigeria Police as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) sometime in 1990.

“He is a passionate, versatile, and experienced police officer who served in multiple units of operations, investigation, and administrative departments in this nation.”

“He had also served as Aid-De-Camp (ADC) to the former governor of Ondo, Late Olusegun Agagu.

“The Commander of Nigeria Contingent to Kosovo, Bosnia, and Darfur.



“Commander 16 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Akure, Ondo State, Commander 53 PMF Bama, Borno State and Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, Yobe State.”

Fintiri bans PTA levies in public schools.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has cancelled the charging of levies by Parent Teachers’ Associations (PTAs) of public schools.

The Governor said on Monday that such levies ran against his government’s free education policy.

The Governor who spoke at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Secretariat in Yola where he addressed CAN officials and church leaders from across the state, stressed that he could not condone PTA levies when his government is running a free education scheme.

He said, “Education is free here. I can’t tolerate a situation now where PTAs fix charges. We came to relieve parents of the burden of paying fees and we don’t want anything that sounds like fees by some other name.”

The Governor said he was taking steps to stop the indiscriminate charging of levies under whatever guise because it runs contrary to his free education programme.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri who was at the CAN Secretariat for interaction with the CAN officials and other Christian leaders, said his measures to assuring security for all have improved religious harmony, among other things.

Speaking earlier during the event, the state chairman of CAN, Bishop Dami Mamza, said Christians in the state were committed to the unity and development of the state.

Mamza, also the Catholic Bishop of Yola, said, “CAN has the vision of a just and prosperous state where everyone will enjoy equity. We seek the building of a better Adamawa State for the good of all.”



2023: Another gubernatorial candidate dies.

The gubernatorial candidate of the National Rescue Movement, NRM, in Adamawa State, Alhaji Aliyu Maina, is dead.

Maina’s death has been confirmed by Olusola Afuye, the National Publicity Secretary of NRM.

He was reported to have died on Wednesday, 25 January after a brief illness in Abuja, same day the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, gubernatorial candidate in Abia State, Professor Uchenna Ikonne, was confirmed dead.

“According to the statement from the family, late Alhaji Abba Maina died on Wednesday, January 25 at his residence in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, after a brief illness.

“He has been buried according to Muslim rite. We pray to Almighty Allah to protect his family and all his loved ones,” Afuye said.

While calling on political and business associates to show late Maina’s family care and love during the mourning period, he said details of arrangements would be made known to the public after consultation with his family.



Fire razes illegal fuel depot in Yola.

An illegal fuel depot has been destroyed by fire in the Adamawa State capital, Yola.

The fire broke out late Wednesday evening at the depot, located beside a famous road junction called Roundabout Maidoki, near the entrance gate of the Yola International Airport, Jimeta.

Witnesses said the fire started about 6:30pm, destroying unascertained quantities of petrol said to have been bought and stored at the depot by a major black marketer.

Apart from the depot and its content, vehicles parked around the vicinity were destroyed by the huge fire.

The fire had burned into the night and was visible to Yola residents several kilometres away in the growing darkness.

The fuel depot fire came amidst worsening fuel scarcity around Adamawa State, characterised by rising cost and widening black market operations.

As at Wednesday morning in Yola, fuel was selling at least N300 per litre in the few filling stations that had it, while black marketers were charging between N1,700 and N2,000 for a 4-litre gallon of the commodity.
