Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, his counterpart, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu including the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami took turns to reveal part of what transpired at the meeting.

Ishaku said the Council of State members made it clear that the policy is accepted and has come to stay but that the resistance of the populace to its introduction was also not misplaced.

According to Ishaku, the Council acknowledged that at the beginning people resist a policy even though it is good.

He said the Council which only plays an advisory role observed that the problem was that of implementation, considering that the majority of Nigerians are subjected to suffering.

Asked what was the major position of the President, who is at the centre of the policy, the Taraba Governor said the President directed state governments to go to their respective states to proffer solutions, by way of ensuring that they help to ease the tensions being experienced in the country.

Buhari regime calls for calm amid Abuja terror attack alert.

Advertisements

President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime has urged Nigerians to remain calm amid the Abuja terror attack alert.

Advertisements

Specifically, the FCT Administration called on Abuja residents to remain calm as security agencies are working to maintain law and order in the nation’s capital.

This is contained in a statement by FCT spokesman Muhammad Sule, on Tuesday.

The FCTA assured the residents that all necessary arrangements have been made to safeguard lives and property.

”As part of proactive measures, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammad Bello, convened an emergency security meeting where issues concerning the security alert given by some embassies in Abuja, to their citizens were exhaustively discussed and measures taken to sustain the current state of security and prevent any breach,” said the statement.

It disclosed that the minister during the meeting charged the security agencies to do all within their powers to protect FCT residents against bandits, terrorists and other criminal elements.

”The administration has not authorised the closure of any school; accordingly, the schools that have closed should, therefore, reopen forthwith,” added the statement.

The FCT minister restated his advice to residents to cooperate at all times with the security agencies by volunteering useful and timely information that would assist in nipping criminal attacks in the bud.

He also urged Abuja residents to go about their legitimate activities as all security agencies were fully mobilised to checkmate any attacks.

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria on Sunday issued a security alert over the risk of terror attacks especially in the FCT.

“There is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically in Abuja,” said the alert. “Targets may include, but are not limited to, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organisations.”

Abuja residents decry hike in price of cooking gas.

Advertisements

Many residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, have decried the continuous increase in the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), known as cooking gas.

Advertisements

The recent data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that the price of 5kg cooking gas increased by 86.62 per cent in one year from N2,397.60 recorded in September 2021 to N4,474.48 in September 2022.

While on a month-on-month basis, the price increased by 0.40 per cent from N4,456.56 recorded in August 2022 to N4,474.48 in September 2022.

Christain Ikechukwu, a public servant, said the constant increase had made him reduce the quantity of cooking gas he bought.

“My wife and I decided we had to cut down on the quantity of gas we buy from 12.5kg to 5kg. In addition, we bought an electric cooker to alternate the use of cooking gas,” said Mr Ikechukwu.

He added, “Since more of my income is going to purchasing gas and income has not increased, we have had to cut down on other expenses in the home front.”

Glorious Oni, a retired civil servant, said the increase had affected her negatively, causing financial stress.

“Life is not easy for a retiree, especially a government retiree. The increase in gas has added to the hardship being experienced by retirees,” she said.

Ms Oni explained that she had not considered an alternative to cooking gas because, for her, it was better than cooking with firewood, kerosene or electricity.

Blessing Samuel, a restaurant owner, lamented the increasing gas prices adversely affected her business and profit margin.

“In a week, we spend nothing less than N43,000 on just gas, compared to N15,000 we used to spend before. That is just for gas, we have not talked about food items that are so expensive,” Ms Samuel disclosed. “Even if you want to use charcoal, it is still the same thing because a bag sells for N5,000. So if we are spending all that money on gas, how can you make any reasonable profit?’’

Patrick Idoko, a businessman, said his family had to make lifestyle adjustments to accommodate the increasing gas prices.

“A cut in necessities as much as possible has become imperative, for instance, a reduction in call time, except when necessary, reduction in outings, and so on to save money as much as possible,’’ he said.

Dorcas Ogiemwonyi, a civil servant, saw the rising cooking gas pricee as a serious problem which the government must address urgently.

Ese Williams, a civil servant, described the development as pathetic, wondering why gas prices keep increasing, noting that the “increase in the price of gas is eating deep into our meagre resources. Cooking with firewood or charcoal is not an option for me.”

The civil servant urged the federal government to reverse the trend.

Insecurity: FRSC warns Abuja-Lagos motorists against using Ekiti route.

Advertisements

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised people travelling through Ondo from Abuja to ply Akure-Ondo-Ife-Ibadan or Lagos-Ibadan-Ife-Ondo-Ore-Benin.

Acting FRSC corps marshal Dauda Biu disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Biu also advised people travelling from the western part of the country through the state to the north to ply the same route.

He explained that the advisory became necessary because the Igbara-Oke-Ilara-Mokin route is totally blocked at the moment.

“However, in the interim, operatives, as well as logistics, have been adequately deployed to ensure speedy removal of the obstructions on that route for ease of movement,” said the FRSC statement.

Court discharges, acquits Nnamdi Kanu.

Advertisements

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday declared as illegal and unlawful, the abduction of the Biafra nation agitator, Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria and quashed the entire terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

The Court held that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in the forceful rendition of Kanu to Nigeria, thereby making the terrorism charges against him incompetent and unlawful.

In a judgment in an appeal by Kanu, by Justice Oludotun Adefope-Okojie, the criminal charges by the Federal Government against Kanu were voided and set aside.

The Appellate Court said that the Federal Government having flagrantly breached the fundamental rights of Kanu, lost the legal right to put him on trial.

The Court held that laws are meant to be obeyed and that the Federal Government has no reason to have taken laws into her own hand in the illegal and unlawful way the matter of Kanu was handled.

Justice Adebola held that failure of Nigeria to follow due process by way of extradition process as prescribed by law was fatal to the charges against Kanu.

The Appeal Court further held that the failure of the Federal Government to disclose where and when the alleged offences brought against Kanu were committed was also fatal to the terrorism charges and made them liable to dismissal.

“By engaging in utter unlawful and illegal acts and in breach of its own laws in the instant matter, the Federal Government did not come to equity in clean hands and must be called to order.

“With appalling disregard to local and international laws, the Federal Government has lost the right to put the appellant trial for any offence.

“Treaties and Protocols are meant to be obeyed. No government in the world is permitted to abduct anybody without following due process of extradition. Nigeria is not an exception or excused. Nigeria must obey her own law and that of international, so as to avoid anarchy”, the Court held.

Kuje Prison Riot: Fish out all escapees – Bello orders trad rulers.

Advertisements

The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, on Wednesday in Abuja, tasked traditional rulers in Kuje Area Council to work with relevant security operatives to fish out all escapees from the Kuje Prison.

Bello gave the directive during an on-the-spot assessment of damage following the attack at the Kuje Medium Correctional Facility by suspected terrorists, which led to the escape of many inmates.

He also urged the Gomo of Kuje, Haruna Jibrin, to summon all traditional chiefs in the council to combine intelligence with security agencies to fish out the escaped inmates from the community.

Similarly, the minister also called on members of the communities to provide appropriate intelligence to the security agencies to enable them to do their work.

He expressed confidence that with maximum cooperation from the communities, all those who escaped would be traced, found and returned.

After he was unconscious, petrol was poured over him and not to stoke any fear in the market, he was burnt in front of the office.”

When our reporter visited the scene, the scorched tyres used in burning him could be seen while traders locked their shop in anticipation of any violence.
