Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday, Ocotber 1st at a dinner organised in commemoration of Nigeria’s 59th Independence Anniversary at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja, thrilled the guests with visual descriptions of attributes that make Nigerians outstanding.

Osinbajo, who spoke on a lighter note, said that one of the distinct attributes of the Nigerian person was the `Nigerian Swag.’

He described `Nigerian swag’ as that uniquely confident way that made Nigerians to stand out everywhere and in everything they did. Osinbajo, who got the guests laughing and clapping intermittently, cited the sport called Bobsled and presented a power point video of Nigerians girls dancing at the Winter Olympics.

“They thought only white people could do this because it is a winter sport; if you don’t have winter and snow in your country you can’t be a bobsled champion. Well, so they thought until the Nigerians came to the Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang South Korea, three Nigerian girls.

Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga the first Africans in Bobsled at the Winter Olympics. They raced into history in style and they ended it with dance. “How else would you know that they are Nigerians.’’
He said that the World Cup came in May 2018; but well before the World Cup kicked off, Nigeria had started winning. Osinbajo recalled that when Nike released the design of Nigeria’s jersey called Naija in Feb. 2018, three million people pre-ordered the Jersey for 90 dollar a piece on line.

He said that eventually thousands of people lined up to buy the jersey and it sold out in the stores within hours. “The jersey was lit; so lit that we won the first prize for the best dressed team, Peru came second and Belgium came third.’’

The vice president listed the quality and prowess of Nigerian boxer, Anthony Joshua, Nigerian wedding, dance and language as some other aspects of Nigerian uniqueness. 44

“And then there is Anthony Joshua, as far as we are concerned the best boxer in the world not only is he a heavy hitter– he could also pass for a model; so much Swag. “How about the Nigerian wedding, it has become the toast of the world, among other things, we are teaching the world that every wedding deserves a hashtag.

Osinbajo also listed one of the richest men in Africa, Aliko Dangote, President Muhammadu Buhari, former President Olusegun Obasanjo as among those who carry Nigerian swag with their dance steps. According to him, when it comes to fashion, Nigerians are the masters of style.

“From the geles, and look at what Iya rainbow is wearing, and of course the famous Madam Kofo’s gele. Nigerians brought Ankara to mainstream fashion. So Nigerian designers are making waves internationally with the infusion of Ankara in their collections. And the likes of Lisa Folawiyo, Mackie O, Andrew Iyamah, Kenneth Ize, Mowa Ogunlesi, have been featured in Vogue and other international fashion magazines and events such as the New York fashion week.

“The Nigerian-American designer Ena Udemba designed Beyoncé’s drop dead gorgeous Ankara outfit; today the whole world is wearing our Ankara; from Michelle Obama, Rihana and Kim Kardashian‘’ he said.
He also displayed Buhari featuring with his `trade mark black kaftan’ describing him as the number one man with the swag.

Amidst intermittent downpour at the Police Parade ground, Ikeja venue of the 59th independence celebration anniversary of the Nation on Tuesday, Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu assured of commitment to achieving collective aspiration of the state and nation.

In his independence anniversary speech, the governor said, “As leaders in position of authority we are committed to achieving the greatest good for the greatest number.

“We will ensure that we do all that we can to improve and impact the lives of our people through our developmental programmes.”

Adding that it is reassuring that the state is on the right track to attaining greatness and achieving the goal to build the foundation for sustainable growth and development.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagosians take pride in the role the state has played and will continue to play in the development trajectory of the nation, “particularly in fulfilling the vision of our founding fathers.

“Today we draw our strength from our cosmopolitan nature which has made our state a melting pot for all the various ethnic groups in Nigeria, this is one of the visions of our founding fathers which we would continue to cherish, sustain and protect for generations”.

The governor reinterated the determination of his administration to sustain its developmental agenda as captured in THEMES through public-private partnership building desired to attract more investment to the state.

“Our vision and overall objectives on our THEMES developmental agenda is to ensure and usher in unprecedented development in all the sectors of our economy including a fully integrated multi-modal transportation system, quality education and others.”

He appealed for continuous cooperation and support from all citizens of the state saying “governance is not about the people in government alone, it is everybody’s business.”

He, therefore, appealed for compliance to rules and regulations as well as voluntary discharge of civic obligation from citizens, “this is what it takes to build a greater Lagos, it is a duty and it shall be accomplished by the special grace of God”, the governor said.

9ja 59′ Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde Calls For Orientation Change. (Details)

In the spirit of the celebration of the 59th independence anniversary of the country, Oyo state Governor Seyi Makinde has called for a change of orientation on the part of all Nigerians by ensuring they put national interests first and above all what he described as “egocentric concepts” that negates the progress of the country.

Noting that the Independence Day celebration used to be marked with funfair, the governor stressed that this year’s edition calls for moments of sober reflections on the state and the nation at large.

Makinde gave the charge on Tuesday at the main bowl of the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan in an address after a commemorative march past led by officers of the Oyo State Command of the Nigerian Police Force.

The march past which is the peak of weeklong events organised by the State Government to celebrate the nation at 59 was witnessed by members of the State Executive Council, top government functionaries, the speaker of the state house of assembly, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, who led other lawmakers, the state chief judge, Muntar Abimbola who led other members of the judiciary, commissioners, special advisers, heads of ministerial and extra ministerial boards, agencies and parastatals.

Others are traditional rulers, security heads, religious leaders, public and private schools, paramilitary organisations, trade groups, artisans among others.

Makinde who was represented by his deputy, Mr Rauf Olaniyan however assured that notwithstanding the plethora of challenges facing the country, his administration will continue to chart the course that will launch Oyo state into a land of great investments with economic opportunities and agricultural development.

He used the opportunity of the occasion to solicit for the cooperation of the people of the state with his government, promising that he would ensure that all parts of the state is given a sense of belonging in the scheme of things, across religious or political divides.

Makinde said, “The Independence Day Celebration used to be marked with funfair, but this edition calls for moments sober reflections on the state and the nation at large.

“There is a need to change our orientation to put national interest first above all egocentric concepts that negate the progress of the nation

“The present administration in Oyo state will continue to chart a course that will launch Oyo state into a land of great investments with economic opportunities and agricultural development, so that the state in the not too distant future will be a state of pride to us as before.

“Welfare programmes will be our focus in order to create a good life for all the citizens of Oyo state as we pursue our four policy thrust of agricultural development and its value chain, health, education and security.

“We have a genuine desire to embark on aggressive strategy on mechanized agriculture and agricultural value chain that would not only provide employment for our people but one that would make Oyo State the Food Basket of the Nation.

“In order to achieve a greater level of educational development, we must invest in all-round development of our opportunity for self-development self- reliance and self-actualization by exposing them to trainings that will assist them to become patriotic and responsible citizens in the society.

“Hence the intervention programme flagged-off with the distribution of textbooks and exercise books to all the schools in Oyo state.

“I use the occasion of this year’s celebration to seek the cooperation of all progressive minded people, civil servants, artisans, stakeholders, political leaders and followers. We shall accommodate all interest to ensure that every part of the state have a sense of belonging indifference to political or religious inclination

“As Nigeria celebrates her 59th Independence Anniversary today, I congratulate us and pray that at our time, the dream of Eldorado is achieved. I wish you all a happy low key independence celebration.”

Highpoint of the event includes cultural performance, distribution of prizes for winners at the march past, as well as for essay writing competitions and debate which held earlier.

The event which was witnessed by a large turnout of the members of the public despite the early morning shower also saw heavy presence of security operatives.
