Remember greatest-ever sumo champ, Hakuho — he retired two years ago, see reason.

Mongolian-born Japanese sumo wrestler Hakuho, often considered the sport’s greatest-ever champion, retired on Monday after battling persistent knee trouble, officials said.

The 36-year-old’s departure will leave a gaping hole at the top of the ancient sport. He has won a record 45 tournaments – 13 more than anyone else in history – but has been sidelined by injury for most of the year.

He made his only appearance of 2021 at July’s Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament, going unbeaten to win the title after missing all or part of the previous six competitions.

He and 17 other wrestlers from his stable were forced to miss the following tournament, which ended Sunday, after a coronavirus outbreak.

His departure leaves just one other wrestler, Terunofuji, in the yokozuna class – sumo’s highest rank.

“I learned from the sumo association chairman that Hakuho’s letter of retirement was filed through his stable master today,” Hironori Yano, head of the yokozuna deliberation council, which is close to the association, told reporters.

Hakuho’s decision, reportedly the result of a right knee injury, brings the curtain down on his illustrious career after 1,187 wins.

The Japan Sumo Association declined to comment, but the news made headlines in the country and grateful fans tweeted their support for the star.

Near the Kokugikan venue where sumo’s Tokyo tournament is held, Takashi Sakai was full of praise for the retiring wrestler.

“I want to tell him: ‘Great work. Well done.’ He worked really hard, coming all the way to Japan, becoming a sumo wrestler and a yokozuna champion. It’s not very easy to achieve all that,” the 76-year-old told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

“He has been the strongest wrestler for a long time and has been very influential,” said Miyako Arai.

“I think there are many wrestlers whose admiration of Hakuho led them to pursue the sport,” the 46-year-old Arai added.

A tremendous yokozuna’
Born Munkhbat Davaajargal and the son of an Olympic silver-medal freestyle wrestler, Hakuho came to Japan at age 15 to enter the sumo world.

He debuted in 2001 and won his first top-division title in May 2006, before reaching the sport’s highest rank of yokozuna at age 22 in July 2007.

His battles with fellow Mongolian yokozuna Asashoryu – the pantomime villain to Hakuho’s popular good guy – helped breathe new life into the sport, with attendances booming.

Asashoryu retired in 2010, but Hakuho went from strength to strength, overtaking the legendary Taiho’s record of 33 tournament wins in January 2015.

The one-time rival called Hakuho “a tremendous yokozuna,” in a post on Twitter after news of the retirement emerged.

“I will save the rest of my words for when the two of us speak in person. But to sum up, thanks for all your hard work,” Asashoryu wrote.

Hakuho outlasted fellow yokozuna Harumafuji, Kakuryu and Kisenosato.

Hakuho acquired Japanese citizenship in September 2019, giving him the right to run his own sumo stable after retirement.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for January 2023.

Rashford picked the prize up in September as well and has remained a crucial player for United ever since, racking up 18 goals and eight assists in 31 games across all competitions this season.

In January, Rashford netted three goals across four Premier League outings, earning himself the Player of the Month prize for the second time this season and the third time across his career.

He opened the month by netting in a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth, before he famously completed a United comeback in the Manchester derby against Pep Guardiola’s City with an 82nd-minute winner to seal all three points.

After drawing a blank against Crystal Palace, Rashford rounded out January with a screamer of a strike in a 3-2 defeat to Arsenal which was also nominated for the month’s Best Goal award.

Rashford came out on top of a seven-man shortlist that also included Newcastle’s Dan Burn, Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson, City’s Riyad Mahrez, Brighton’s Solly March, Brentford’s David Raya and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

Man Utd 2-0 Nottingham Forest (Agg 5-0): Player rating.

Manchester United secured their place in only a second major final in six seasons on Wednesday night with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Goals from Anthony Martial and Fred decided the game, bumping up an already comfortable aggregate lead from the first leg to 5-0, setting up a clash with Newcastle at Wembley this month.

The hosts had mild penalty appeals when Alejandro Garnacho went down under pressure from Neco Williams and Willy Boly. But nearly half an hour had passed before either side had a clear sight of goal, with a powerful Casemiro header saved by Wayne Hennessey’s outstretched right foot.

Despite chasing an aggregate deficit, Forest had seen very little of the ball but probably should have taken the lead on a rare foray forward. A throw-in gave Brennan Johnson the chance to dribble his way through, but the pacey Welshman’s finish straight at Tom Heaton lacked conviction.

Antony’s cleanly hit strike from outside the box in the closing stages of the first half had Hennessey worried as he flew to his left, seeing the ball just rise over the crossbar.

Wout Weghorst then struck the post right before the interval after an otherwise quiet opening 45 minutes from the Dutchman, while Forest winger Emmanuel Dennis had his head in his hands when his goal-bound effort was inadvertently blocked by teammate Sam Surridge.

United had stronger penalty appeals not long into the second half when Weghorst nicked the ball in front of Forest defender Scott McKenna, whose attempt to clear then upended the forward. It was given the VAR treatment but the on-field decision surprisingly stood.

Tempers flared a little around the hour mark, with tackles flying and Alejandro Garnacho involved in an ongoing fracas with Johnson and Williams on Forest’s right flank. The young Argentine forced Hennessey into a good save at the near post in one of his final acts before Ten Hag made a flurry of changes, including the return of Jadon Sancho after more than three months out.

With United already starting to turn the screw, those changes triggered the second half goals. The first went to Martial, capitalising on a rebound after fellow sub Marcus Rashford had seen an attempt blocked following an initial run by the Frenchman.

Sancho was then involved in the second goal not long after, feeding Bruno Fernandes on the right. The United skipper’s exquisite outside-of-the-foot ball to the far post was then put back across the box by Rashford for Fred to score an easy tap-in.

Heaton still had to have his wits about him late on to preserve his clean sheet, throwing a big hand up to parry a powerful drive from Danilo as Forest searched for a very late consolation. With the goal gaping, Surridge skied his own attempt on the rebound.

Man Utd player ratings (4-2-3-1)
GK: Tom Heaton – 6/10 – A deserved opportunity but hardly a busy night until a spectacular late save.

RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7/10 – Took up an interesting position relatively high up the pitch and often tucked inside that made it difficult for Dennis and made space for Antony.

CB: Lisandro Martinez – 7/10 – Commanded every situation.

CB: Raphael Varane – 7/10 – Always composed and in control.

LB: Luke Shaw – 6/10 – Back after illness and can be satisifed with this performance.

CM: Casemiro – 8/10 – Another fine example of the type of performance that has really driven the whole team’s resurgence this season.

CM: Fred – 7/10 – Has been thriving alongside his fellow countryman and could play an awful lot more now that Christian Eriksen is out for a few months.

RM: Antony – 6/10 – Inches away from a great goal and posed a threat early on.

AM: Bruno Fernandes (c) – 8/10 – Put in a star turn, especially after moving to the right in the seconc half. Went close to a goal of his own late on.

Frank Lampard’s worst defeats as Everton manager.

Frank Lampard is the next manager to have been chewed up and spit out by the poisoned chalice that is Everton Football Club.

Defeat to West Ham on Saturday proved to be the final straw, with the former midfielder receiving his marching orders at the start of this week. By doing so, Lampard has become the sixth boss to depart the blue side of the Mersey in as many years.

It was always going to be a challenge for a man that’s yet to prove himself as a head coach, and his tenure was laden with drab performances and even worse results.

Here are some of the worst defeats Lampard suffered as Everton boss.

The Toffees had shown plenty of fight the week prior in a 1-0 home defeat to Manchester City, and Lampard’s stellar record against Tottenham as both a player and manager meant some supporters were optimistic that Everton could upset the odds in this Monday night clash.

The visitors, however, were nothing short of a dire and a Spurs side on the come-up under Antonio Conte took full advantage. Michael Keane set the tone when he booted one into his own net to give the hosts the lead before Jordan Pickford let a rather tame Son Heung-min effort squeeze underneath him.

Harry Kane tripled Spurs’ advantage before half-time and by the 55th minute, they were 5-0 ahead before taking pity on their woeful visitors.

We all remember Lampard’s primitive summary of Everton’s FA Cup defeat at Selhurst Park, right?

According to the already under-the-cosh Everton boss, the Toffees had been dismantled in the cup due to a bunch of weak goals.

This was billed as a mammoth relegation six-pointer. Everton had won just once since their drubbing at Spurs and, alongside Burnley, were fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table.

A Richarlison brace from the penalty spot overturned an early deficit in the first-half as the visitors matched their physical hosts in testing conditions. Everton proceeded to enjoy much of the second-half after they were pegged back by Jay Rodriguez just before the hour, but a pair of errors from Pickford and Ben Godfrey allowed Maxwel Cornet to snatch a seemingly crucial winner five minutes from time.

After eventually clinching survival, Lampard sought to turn things around at Goodison Park at the beginning of the 2022/23 season. However, the Toffees enjoyed a winless start to the new campaign before a goalless draw in the Merseyside derby on matchday 6 ignited a mini-resurgence.

However, the dark clouds were forming over Lampard’s tenure just before the World Cup as they suffered back-to-back humiliations on the south coast. Bournemouth beat Everton 4-1 in the Carabao Cup just days before they thrashed them 3-0 in the league.

This felt like the point of no return.

There had been little to suggest that Lampard was the right man to lead Everton forward either side of the World Cup, but a well-earned point at the Etihad at least offered a glimmer of hope. Still, the Toffees were winless in six games when a dynamic Brighton side came to town and put four past them in a chastening home defeat.

Goodison Park is meant to be one of the toughest places to go and win in the Premier League, but the Seagulls made the challenge look worryingly simple. Everton inexcusably conceded three goals in six second-half minutes to put the game beyond them as a powerless Lampard watched on in the home dugout.

And yet Lampard managed to keep hold of his job for a few more pointless weeks.

He took the Toffees to London Stadium to face fellow strugglers West Ham, with pressure mounting too on Hammers boss David Moyes.

A first-half brace from Jarrod Bowen proved to be the difference. Fans unfurled flags at full-time protesting against the board. Only a handful of players came over to applaud their support.

It was over.

Super Eagles Can Win The World Cup – CAF President

“I am absolutely confident [because of] the talent, God-given skills, and history of Nigerian football. Nigeria is one of those countries that have the potential – not just to go to the semi-final, not just to go to the final, but to win the World Cup,” he told Channels Television.

“To focus on youth football development, football facilities for boys and girls, amateur football, football development at club level, training coaches and training the trainers, the development of referees and very importantly, to make sure that we work together with the football federation in Nigeria so that they can continue the leadership that they have provided for many years,” Motseppe added.

“We are confident that Nigerian football will continue to be not just amongst the best in Africa but in the world and will make us proud as it has on so many occasions in the past. Our plan is to see Nigeria in the next World Cup.”

His comment came days after Morocco became the first African team (after only four teams from the continent have reached the quarter-final) to reach the semi-final of the quadrennial competition, a feat the billionaire said has opened the floodgate for the continent.

“Morocco opened the door by reaching the semi-finals this month and I am confident an African nation will go further at the next World Cup,” the chief said.

Going into the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as one of the favourites earlier in the year, the 1980 champions quickly cemented their status as one of the frontrunners for the continental diadem. They picked three wins in the group stage, amassing nine points in the process.

But the team broke the hearts of millions of Nigerian fans after a shocking defeat to Tunisia in the round of 16. The Carthage Eagles had qualified as one of the best third-placed teams and were ravaged by COVID-19 going into the clash with Nigeria.

While many were still seething from the AFCON heartbreak, the Super Eagles surrendered the 2022 World Cup ticket to rivals Ghana on the away goal rules. They played a goalless draw in the first leg of the playoff away before the Black Stars forced them to a 1-1 stalemate in the March double-header.

March’s World Cup disappointment was followed up by a ray of hope as Nigeria recorded its biggest win in football with a 10-0 trouncing of minnows Sao Tome and Principe in June under new coach Jose Peseiro.

Messi’s fans went on a bid to make his photograph the most liked picture on Instagram

Remember the picture of a brown egg that became the most liked photo on Instagram in 2019? Argentinian football team captain, Lionel Messi, just broke the record, as his photograph lifting the World Cup trophy became the top liked post on Instagram today.

On Tuesday morning, Messi’s fans went on a bid to make his photograph the most liked picture on the social media platform, just two days after his team won the FIFA World Cup 2022 finals in Qatar.

Many fans took to Instagram and Twitter to say that they were “unliking” the picture of the egg to make their sport idol win.

On Tuesday morning, the Guinness World Records, on their official Twitter account (@GWR) shared a meme with the caption: “Us watching the amount of likes on Messi’s recent Instagram post against the world record egg’s current record.”

The record was previously held by the ‘photo of an egg’, which had garnered over 56 million likes after it was posted on Instagram on January 4, 2019, to beat the number of likes on Kylie Jenner’s post.

Messi, who reached 400 million followers on Instagram on December 20, now has over 60 million likes on his picture. His fans celebrated with memes and reposted his picture on their social media accounts, congratulating him.

Messi finished the World Cup with seven goals, one behind tournament’s top scorer Kylian Mbappe, and three assists. He was honoured with the Golden Ball for his performance.

Fans enjoy World Cup games experience with stadium sensory rooms.

Advertisements

With no racket, commotion and fireworks of the World Cup games, there’s a comfortable and safe space for fans who might get overwhelmed in a stadium environment. The “sensory rooms,” at three stadiums in Qatar, provide a calm refuge for children and young adults with autism, learning difficulties or other sensory access requirements.

Located at the stadium skyboxes at the Al Bayt, Education City and Lusail stadiums, the rooms feature soft furnishings, noise-canceling headphones and interactive tools and toys to help children cope with the loud atmosphere and allow them to ease anxiety and enjoy the unique experience of a World Cup game.

“Having a space like this is a respite. It’s like a warm hug,” said Raana Smith, co-founder of Sensory Souk, a Doha-based company that staffs the sensory rooms.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

“Everybody should have the right and the opportunity to experience football,” she said. “If someone has limited speech, limited mobility, that shouldn’t be a barrier ever to experience something as wonderful and as crowd-pleasing.”

The dimmed-lit rooms include soft cushions, soothing colorful lights and rising bubble tubes and boards mounted on walls that provide different textures to help people calm down and refocus. Fans are also provided with sensory bags that include noise-canceling headphones, weighted lap pads and fidget toys like plastic clappers and gloves.

Large floor-to-ceiling windows let families keep an eye on the field. The ultimate goal is to gradually introduce fans to the game, allowing them to sit in the stands for periods at a time and then return to the sensory room when needed, Alison Saraf, co-founder of Sensory Souk, said at the 80,000-capacity Lusail Stadium, where the World Cup final will be played.

“In children, what we ideally want to do is ignite a passion for a new sport,” Saraf said. “The aim is always really to have as many people enjoy the game outside and experience everything that’s here.”

The initiative is run by FIFA and the host country’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.

Sensory rooms have also been introduced in recent years in professional sports in the United States, including at the MLS, NBA and the NFL to provide calming spaces for fans with sensory challenges.

“This is really a worldwide phenomenon as people are understanding more and more the fact that they need to broaden the appeal of sports to every single demographic,” said Dr. Julian Maha, co-founder of KultureCity, a U.S.-based organization that has helped sports teams across the U.S. with programs for visitors with a range of sensory issues, including people who have autism.

“Because of their sensory issues, where going to a large-scale sporting event like a stadium cannot only be overwhelming but physically painful because of the crowds, the noise, the smells, a lot of these individuals tend to withdraw from the community and don’t engage,” Maha said.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

By providing sensory rooms, he said, the World Cup is “opening up the game to really a ton more people, people who have largely been demarginalized and not included, and giving them the opportunity to reengage and become part of the community again and enjoy all the things that we as neurotypical individuals take for granted.”

Doan grew up in the town of Amagasaki, to the west of Osaka. His older brothers were mad about football and Ritsu quickly caught the bug too, getting key encouragement from one of his early coaches at primary school, Yo Hayano. After boyhood spells with Urakaze and Nishinomiya, Doan received offers from several big clubs as a teenager and opted for Gamba Osaka, becoming part of a golden generation who won the club’s first ever treble at U15 level in 2012.

Doan made his senior debut in May 2015, at 16 years and 344 days, in a 3-2 win over FC Seoul in the Asian Champions League. A week later, he became the youngest player in the club’s history to play in the J1 League, against Kashima Antlers. In all, he netted four goals in 25 senior appearances for Osaka – the first coming on his first Asian Champions League start in 2017, in a 3-3 draw with Adelaide United.

Named Asian Youth Player of the Year in 2016, Doan also impressed at the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2017, scoring three goals to help Japan reach the knockout stage. After a brilliant run and finish against Italy, he was even referred to as “the Japanese Messi” on the official FIFA.com Twitter page. It was only a matter of time before European clubs started showing an interest in Osaka’s teen sensation, and he duly signed on loan for FC Groningen in summer 2017. After an impressive maiden Eredivisie campaign – nine goals and four assists in 29 appearances – he was signed on a permanent deal, inheriting the number 7 shirt.

In 66 games for Groningen, Doan notched 16 goals and seven assists, earning himself a move to PSV Eindhoven in summer 2019. He endured a difficult debut campaign at the club, though, and thus, in September 2020, joined Arminia Bielefeld on a season-long loan. The promoted side faced a battle to remain in the Bundesliga, but Doan was one of their key performers in the fight for survival. He was Bielefeld’s joint-top scorer with five goals – together with centre-forward Fabian Klos – and grabbed a trio of assists, as well as getting the better of the world’s best goalkeeper – Manuel Neuer – in defeat to Bayern Munich. He returned to parent club Eindhoven after keeping Arminia up, scoring 11 times across 39 appearances in the Eredivisie, Dutch Cup, UEFA Europa and Conference Leagues, before securing a move back to the Bundesliga with Freiburg.

Plays a bit like: Xherdan Shaqiri

Doan is a high-octane wide man who likes to get stuck into the action. Generally deployed as a right winger at Bielefeld, he was among the top five players in the Bundesliga for intensive runs and inside the top 15 for sprints. He averaged over two shots per 90 minutes and almost 1.5 passes to a shot, having a major hand in keeping Arminia up – and his efforts were recognised with the Bundesliga Rookie Award for March 2021.

While comparisons with Lionel Messi may be a little far-fetched, the 24-year-old does share traits with former Bayern midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, now of Chicago Fire. Both men are of fairly diminutive stature – Doan measures 5’8″, while Shaqiri is a shade shorter at 5’7″ – but that low centre of gravity makes them formidable dribblers of the ball, and they aren’t shy about throwing themselves into challenges either. The pair also share a magic left foot and like to get involved in setting goals up as well as putting them away.

Did you know?

Doan isn’t the only member of his family to have become a footballer. His older brother Yu also plays professionally, although admittedly not at the same level as Ritsu. He is a defensive midfielder who has had spells with various clubs in Japan’s lower leagues, most recently Ococias Kyoto. His Europe-based younger brother remains rather more high-profile, though, boasting over 270,000 followers on Instagram.

What they’re saying

“Ritsu is technically gifted, can take on one-on-ones and knows how to pose a threat to goal. Ritsu showed at Bielefeld that he can play in the Bundesliga – we’ll also need that from him. It’s nice that it’s all worked out with a year’s delay.” – Freiburg sporting director Klemens Hartenbach

“Despite his young age, he has a lot of international experience. Our team will benefit from that, and from the playing skills he’s already demonstrated in the Netherlands and with the Japan national team.” – Bielefeld sporting director Samir Arabi

Spain join World Cup 100 club with 7-0 Costa Rica rout

Advertisements

Former champions Spain got their World Cup off to a pulsating start with a record 7-0 rout of Costa Rica on Wednesday as a Ferran Torres brace and a sumptuous strike from Gavi sent them past the 100-goal mark in soccer’s showpiece event.

Watch Video Here | Download Video Here

The European giants put their stamp on a Group E stunned by Japan’s 2-1 victory over Germany, with Spain relentlessly on the attack against a shambolic Costa Rican side who gave Luis Enrique’s team time and space to carve out chance after chance.

It was a night of records at Doha’s iconic Al Thumama Stadium for a Spain side who have struggled at World Cups since winning the title in 2010, with Barcelona 18-year-old Gavi becoming the country’s youngest World Cup player, and the youngest to score since Brazil great Pele in 1958.

Although Costa Rica’s clumsy defending may have flattered Spain, La Furia Roja were seamless in their attacks, with Pedri the enabler at the heart of seemingly every move in a game where Dani Olmo, Gavi and Marco Asensio and Torres all dazzled.

They each found the net as Spain joined the 100 club of World Cup goals, and late strikes from Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata sealed their biggest victory biggest margin in a World Cup finals match.

“I don’t think it was Costa Rica being bad, I think the win was our merit. We deserved to win, taking the game to them,” Olmo said.

“Our team is strong and that is the path we need to follow. It was a boost of motivation, for sure.”

Early onslaught

Spain was in control from the first kick, with Costa Rica dizzied by their early onslaught and unable to find any rhythm.

Spain could have gone ahead twice from chances to Olmo and Asensio, with Pedri the provider.

They went ahead 11 minutes in when man of the match Gavi put the ball into the path of Olmo, who turned and deftly lifted it over advancing keeper Keylor Navas.

Spain got a second on 21 minutes when Jordi Alba’s neat pass across the box found Asensio who fired low past Navas.

Spain was awarded a penalty around the half hour mark when Alba was brought down, with Torres running full-pelt towards the spot before pausing to coolly stroke the ball down the middle.

Costa Rica returned from the break all at sea and failed to record a single attempt on goal in the match.

Torres gave Spain a fourth and on 53 minutes, finding Gavi on the right, who gave it back to his Barcelona team mate to turn and fire home his second.

Gavi found the net himself 16 minutes from time with a superb running volley with the outside of his foot that clipped in off the post before Soler and Morata completed the demolition with goals in the dying minutes.

Gavi said he was thrilled to become Spain’s youngest World Cup player and score at a goal at a similar age as Pele.

“I didn’t know, I’m really proud of that, to be on that list, I’m really happy” he said. “Today we all had a great game.”

Costa Rica, the last team to reach the World Cup via an intercontinental playoff, could struggle to win any points in their last two games against Japan and Germany.

Defender Kendall Waston said the team would need to come together and fight back.

“We feel hurt and ashamed, it’s a result that nobody wants to experience, to lose 7-0 in a World Cup,” he said.

His coach Luis Fernando Suarez said his team was outplayed by a far superior side.

“They kept the ball throughout the match. We did the exact opposite, we didn’t have possession, we didn’t really attack,” he said. “They played an amazing game and we didn’t.”

Controversial penalty downs Manchester United against Real Sociedad.

Advertisements

Manchester United’s winning run was broken as a Brais Mendez penalty saw Real Sociedad earn a 1-0 victory in their Europa League opener at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

A tight game was decided when substitute Lisandro Martinez was penalised for handball in the area despite the ball hitting his knee first, allowing Mendez to convert from the spot.

Sociedad have previously endured a poor record against English teams in Europe, failing to win any of their six matches, but held their hosts to a goalless first half.

The United side included Casemiro – making his first start for the club – and recalled duo Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward had a few half-sights of goal and saw an excellent header disallowed for offside.

Anthony Elanga enjoyed a few electric runs out wide, but Erik ten Haag’s side recorded just one shot on target as Sociedad frustrated their hosts going into half time.

Ronaldo squandered United’s first chance of the second half, not getting enough on substitute Bruno Fernandes’ pinpoint cross from the right.

The tight battle swung the way of the visitors shortly before the hour mark in somewhat fortuitous circumstances. A shot from David Silva was blocked by diving substitute Martinez before the ball ricocheted onto his arm, with referee Marco Di Bello pointing to the spot.

Mendez made no mistake, lashing his effort beyond the reach of David de Gea.

The Spaniard was called into action soon after as he batted away Takefusa Kubo’s drive before Casemiro spurned a decent opportunity, heading the ball into the ground and over the crossbar at the back post.

United pushed on and the roaming dribbling of Martinez pushed them into promising positions, but it was Sociedad who nearly doubled their lead instead, though Alexander Sorloth butchered a counter attack and allowed De Gea to collect the pass.

It remained 1-0 and ended United’s recent winning run in the Premier League which stood at four victories

Manchester United player ratings vs Real Sociedad – Europa League
1. Man Utd (4-3-3)
GK: David de Gea – 5/10 – No saves to make and only four touches in the first half. More active in the second period but couldn’t save the penalty.

RB: Diogo Dalot – 7/10 – Used the ball well in the final third, whipping in some dangerous crosses.

CB: Harry Maguire – 6/10 – Back in the starting XI and thankfully for his sake not a difficult first 45.

CB: Victor Lindelof – 6/10 – A little tentative but used the ball accurately and made a couple of interceptions.

LB: Tyrell Malacia – 7/10 – Another forthright and front-foot defensive performance.

CM: Fred – 5/10 – Arrived in good positions from midfield but a couple of sloppy giveaways relinquished control.

CM: Casemiro – 6/10 – Wasted a good opportunity to equalise with a mistimed header. Gloriously spun by Aihen Munoz in a tough moment.

CM: Christian Eriksen – 7/10 – Quality of delivery was brilliant. United’s play now firmly runs through the Dane and they’re all the better for it, despite Thursday’s result.

RW: Antony – 6/10 – Tried to link up with his attacking teammates but was rarely successful.

ST: Cristiano Ronaldo – 5/10 – Had an excellent header disallowed for offside. Missed another header he should have buried at the start of the second half. Didn’t look like he enjoyed playing in United’s Thursday night team.

LW: Anthony Elanga – 6/10 – A couple of brilliant runs made him United’s main threat in the first half. Threat waned after the break.

SUB: Bruno Fernandes (45′ for Eriksen) – 6/10 – Immediately set Ronaldo up with a cross. Increased United’s tempo for a period.

SUB: Lisandro Martinez (45′ for Dalot) – 6/10 – Somewhat unfortunate to concede the penalty. Broke forward with purpose late on.

SUB: Jadon Sancho (71′ for Antony) – 6/10

SUB: Alejandro Garnacho (71′ for Elanga) – 6/10

SUB: Charlie McNeill (83′ for Malacia) – N/A

Manager: Erik ten Haag – 5/10 – Switched up his starting XI for Europe. Lack of attacking quality will be concerning for Ten Hag, though he will certainly have a good idea of the players he can trust after Thursday night.

Player of the Match: Diogo Dalot

Erik ten Hag conference: Tuchel sacking, Ronaldo’s rotation, Rashford contract.

Advertisements

Erik ten Hag has spoken to the media ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League group stage opener against Real Sociedad.

United have bounced back superbly from their disastrous beginning to the new season, winning their last four matches – including landmark victories against Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Red Devils get their European campaign underway on Thursday evening. Here’s what Ten Hag had to say at his pre-match press conference.

Thomas Tuchel
What are your thoughts on Chelsea sacking Thomas Tuchel?
“I feel sorry, but there is nothing I can say. It’s Chelsea, not Man United. It’s early in the season, yes.”

Cristiano Ronaldo & rotation
Will Cristiano Ronaldo return to the starting lineup?
“He started against Brentford, then not since, but he is ready to start. Of course [he can start for the majority of games].”

What are your plans for Europa League rotation?
“We have to win every game. We want to win every tournament, so we take everything seriously. We not only have a team, we have a squad, but we have to win every game and that is the mentality Manchester United needs.

“Maybe I can not keep them all happy every game, but everyone gets the game time if they perform well – quite clear. As I’ve said, we need everyone, we have a lot of games to cover.”

What’s the mood like in the squad?
“It’s always difficult when you lose games, the mood is not the same, but we always come here every day to give 100%, to get better in every aspect and that we can be, obviously after Brentford we had a full week to prepare for a game we knew would be difficult. We won it, it’s in the past now, we want to focus on tomorrow and do the same things every game.”

Marcus Rashford
What have you made of Marcus Rashford’s return to form?
“Once again, it’s difficult for me to talk about the past. What I see is a happy Marcus Rashford. We worked really hard the last two months with him on different aspects. He likes it, he wants to transfer it to the pitch. It started with happiness, he comes in every day, he enjoys it, he’s smiling, a really positive vibe, and if you put all of those things together – like the way of play – and you are happy, you will contribute more to the team.”

Does Rashford plan to sign a new contract?
“Definitely. I don’t think he’s out of contract and I think United control the situation.”

Who’s Next: Chelsea to decide on who to replace Tuchel. [See 5 closest manager]

Advertisements

Astonishingly, Thomas Tuchel is no longer Chelsea’s head coach after being relieved of his duties in the wake of the 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

The German had just overseen a world record £273m spend in the summer transfer window, but Todd Boehly and the Chelsea board have opted to axe Tuchel after an indifferent start to the season – one that has seen the club struggle to forge any kind of identity on the pitch and one that has looked toothless in front of goal.

The search will now begin for Tuchel’s replacement, but who will be in the frame to replace him?

Advertisements

Zinedine Zidane, Clubs managed: Real Madrid Castilla, Real Madrid
Zinedine Zidane’s name is in the mix for every big job going and Chelsea’s vacancy is bound to see the Frenchman linked with a Premier League move.

Two hugely successful spells at Real Madrid make Zidane an enticing prospect for Todd Boehly and the Blues board, but it remains to be seen whether he can be talked out of waiting for the France job – which may become available after this winter’s World Cup.

A proven winner in the big leagues, Zidane’s pedigree could be just what Chelsea need.

Advertisements

Mauricio Pochettino, Clubs managed: Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain
Tottenham Hotspur fans, look away now.

It would seem unlikely that Mauricio Pochettino would break his bond with the club’s supporters but could he really turn down the advances of Chelsea if they came calling? He has an abundance of Premier League experience, with Southampton as well as Spurs, and has a proven track record of getting the best out of players.

Failing to win the Champions League with PSG has tarnished Pochettino’s reputation a little, but he remains one of the best coaches in the world.

Advertisements

Graham Potter, Clubs managed: Ostersund, Swansea, Brighton
Brighton are continuing to go from strength to strength under Graham Potter and it’s no surprise to see him touted as one of the favourites to take over.

The Seagulls will do their utmost to keep hold of Potter, should an approach be made, and there’s no guarantee that the 47-year-old would walk away from a hugely appealing project down on the south coast.

But his stock has risen exponentially over the last 12 months, and he’s widely regarded as one of the most progressive coaches in the game.

Advertisements

Roberto Mancini, Clubs managed: Fiorentina, Lazio, Inter, Manchester City, Galatasaray, Zenit
One manager who has been out of the club scene for a little while is Roberto Mancini, but the Italy boss could be swayed by the prospect of taking over at Stamford Bridge.

He’s won the European Championship with his country but wasn’t able to qualify for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar, meaning there’s very little for him to achieve on the international stage – unless he wants to have another crack at the Euros.

A Premier League winner with Manchester City, Mancini knows how to get it done in England and is used to the pressure of managing a top club.

Advertisements

Rodgers, Clubs managed: Watford, Reading, Swansea, Liverpool, Celtic, Leicester
Leicester City are in the doldrums right now, sitting plum bottom of the Premier League table, but Brendan Rodgers still has a decent reputation in the game.

The Northern Irishman also cut his teeth at Chelsea, honing his skills as a coach at youth level, and the opportunity to return to Stamford Bridge could bring to an end what’s becoming a bit of a nightmare spell at King Power.

Rodgers would also reunite with Wesley Fofana, having plucked him out of relative obscurity to help coach him into being one of Europe’s top defenders.

There was a backstage altercation at WWE SmackDown between two NXT stars – Report.

Advertisements

WWE’s NXT account tweeted that there was a backstage altercation on Friday between two of their wrestlers.

Per the NXT account, the altercation was between Von Wagner and Solo Skioa and fans can tune in to see the footage this Tuesday night on the USA Network.

For anyone wondering why this was taped on Friday night, it probably has nothing to do with both men being called up to the main roster and more to do with SmackDown taking place in Orlando at the Amway Arena, just minutes from the Performance Center.

But on a related note, Sikoa has been rumored to be getting called up to the main roster soon so that could happen after he’s done with his feud with Wagner.

Sikoa and Wagner wrestled this past Tuesday on WWE NXT and they were both counted out. The fight continued to the backstage area and outside of the Performance Center and things ended with Sikoa tossing Mr. Stone in a trash can. Scroll down to see the video.

Joshua’s victory over Usyk “possible of forcing” Tyson Fury out of retirement.

Advertisements

John Fury has revealed the only fight that would tempt his son, Tyson Fury, back into the ring would be the long-awaited showdown with fellow British fighter, Anthony Joshua, reports dailymail.co.uk.

The WBC heavyweight champion has insisted repeatedly that his boxing days are behind him after walking away from the sport to spend more time with his family after his victory over Dillian Whyte in April.

The 33-year-old could, however, be tempted by a return to the ring to fight the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs Joshua, who will meet in their rematch in August with the Ukrainian’s IBF, WBO and WBA titles on the line.

Fury has denied reports previously that he is already in talks to fight the winner and his dad has now come out to reveal that he will remain retired unless fellow Brit Joshua wins the rematch in August.

‘‘Yes. Nobody else will. To be honest with you, he’s never come out the gym,’’ John Fury told the Metro.

“He’s obsessed with training at the moment, twice a day, every day. I’ve been participating in some of it myself.

“He enjoys training, the pressure is off and he loves the gym life. He’s turned into a gym rat basically. It’s funny to see but he is.

“He’s super fit and he’s enjoying his time out the ring. Whether it’s going to be permanent or not, it’s up to him. He says he’s retired but you never know with Tyson.

“He’s training very hard for a retired man in my book. But that’s up to him, we’ll see in the future.”

The 32-year-old bounced back after his last defeat and will be hoping to do the same this time after he was heavily criticised for failing to use his size to his advantage after the rematch was confirmed for Saudi Arabia on August 20.

A formal announcement of the hundred-million-dollar plus deal for Joshua v Usyk II will be made early next week.

The Middle East Kingdom is poised to invest even more extravagantly in the Gypsy King’s return from brief retirement for a spectacular outing, which they regard as ‘the next Rumble In The Jungle.’

The bid by Fury, as holder of the WBC title, to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion, is being pitched for between the World Cup semifinals and Final in Qatar, probably on December 17, while tens of thousands of football fans are in the Middle East.

A source close to the Saudi Royal family says: “This is part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s ambitious Vision 2030 project to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors to the Kingdom alike, leading towards net zero carbon emission.

“The Crown Prince wants the world to recognise Saudi Arabia as much more than an oil country, of which sports and culture are an integral part.”

The mega-bucks deal has been brokered for the Saudi government by long-time boxing fan, Prince Khaled bin Abdulaziz, through Skill Challenge Entertainment, who have secured the global rights for Joshua v Usyk.

Fury added: “He’s a big strong guy and it was only a game plan that let him down last time and Usyk, even though he got the decision, he knew he was in a fight. He was smashed to bits was Usyk.

“So, all AJ has to do is tweak a few things and sheer size and power wins. He needs to get his mind right though as that’s the key to unlocking it all. I believe he can do it.

“He’s got a funny way of doing things. He beat Ruiz in Saudi on the return so why not? If anyone’s capable its AJ.
“I hope he does win and who knows, a fight against him might just tempt Tyson.”

UEFA to investigate UCL final chaos.

Advertisements

UEFA announced on Monday it was opening an “independent report” into the security chaos before the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid at the Stade de France in Paris.

European football’s governing body said the report would “examine decision making, responsibility and behaviours of all entities involved in the final”.

UEFA have appointed Portuguese politician Tiago Brandao Rodrigues to oversee the report on a pro bono basis on the completion of which they will decide upon a course of action.

“Evidence will be gathered from all relevant parties,” UEFA said.

“The findings of the independent report will be made public,” it promised.

Brandao Rodrigues has served as Portuguese Minister of Education, was a member of the World Anti-doping Agency and was Portugal’s Olympic attaché during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

France on Monday blamed “massive” ticket fraud for the chaotic scenes that marred the Champions League final on Saturday which saw Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0.

But the French government has faced a barrage of criticism from press and politicians in Britain over the policing of the match.

What next? After Todd Boehly-led group takes over Chelsea.

Advertisements

Chelsea have some clarity after an uncertain few months with the consortium led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly set to buy the Premier League giants.

The Boehly group, which includes fellow Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter, Swiss billionaire Hansjoerg Wyss and US investment firm Clearlake Capital have committed to a deal worth £4.25 billion ($5.2 billion), a record for a sports club.

A sum of £1.75 billion is earmarked for future investment in the club with the other £2.5 billion frozen due to the sanctions imposed on current owner Roman Abramovich.

The Russian oligarch has insisted his intention is for all of the proceeds to be donated to victims of the war in Ukraine.

Advertisements

The sale brings to an end Abramovich’s 19-year reign during which the Blues have enjoyed unparallelled success.

Chelsea won five Premier League titles and two Champions League among 19 major trophies.

But the Abramovich era was brought down by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as he was sanctioned by the UK government for his links to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

AFP Sport looks at the job that lies ahead for the future Chelsea owners.

Stadium redevelopment
The bulk of the future financial commitment to the club is expected to go on redeveloping Stamford Bridge into a stadium worthy of one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Abramovich shelved plans for a £1 billion redevelopment in 2018 during another dispute with the UK government over his visa.

Stamford Bridge’s 42,000 capacity lags well behind Premier League rivals Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Advertisements

Spurs’ £1 billion home, completed in 2019, has become a sporting hub in the English capital, hosting major boxing, rugby and NFL events, as well as concerts and conferences.

Boehly’s track record of both sporting success and stadium redevelopment at the Dodgers gave his bid credibility to go with the major funding behind it.

Investment in the stadium was reportedly a key part of the consortium’s pitch to American bank Raine, who oversaw the sales process.

A larger ground will also be part of the long-term strategy to drive revenue and recoup their huge outlay to buy the European champions.

Stabilise the squad
Chelsea have been operating under a special licence for the past two months since sanctions were levied on Abramovich.

Due to the restrictions applied, the Blues were not allowed to offer new contracts or sign new players.

Defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are set to leave on free transfers at the end of the season and will need to be replaced.

Abramovich’s lavish spending means he leaves behind a very competitive squad.

Advertisements

Just a year ago, Chelsea beat Manchester City to win the Champions League and are on course to finish in the Premier League top four.

With clarity over their future, the club can now work towards assembling a squad to challenge City and Liverpool for the title next season.

“When the situation is clear you can take actions, make judgements,” said Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel on Friday.

Get fan support

Much to the dismay of politicians, Abramovich’s name was still chanted by Chelsea fans following the sanctions thanks to the success he had bankrolled over the past two decades.

Winning will be the quickest way into the hearts of the Chelsea faithful for the new ownership, but there are other pitfalls to be avoided.

There are fears that to see a return on their investment, the deeply unpopular European Super League could be revived for the guaranteed income it sought to provide.

Fans have also taken issue with American ownership of other Premier League clubs.

Protests have been a common occurence outside Old Trafford this season with Manchester United supporters furious at the dividends taken out of the club by the Glazer family during a decade of decline.

Fenway Sports Group have enjoyed much greater success reviving the fortunes of Liverpool, but have also been pressured into climbdowns on ticket prices and signing up to the Super League by fan fury

On this day, 20 years ago, Rafael Nadal played and won his first ATP match.

Earlier this week, Rafael Nadal’s record Top 10 streak officially reached 17 years, and today we celebrate the Spaniard again, as it’s been exactly 20 years since he played—and won—his first ATP match, beating Paraguay’s Ramon Delgado in the first round of his home tournament in Mallorca on April 29th, 2002.

Delgado was a quality opponent—he was ranked No. 81 at the time and had gone as high as No. 52 a few years earlier. He had also been to the second week of a major before, at Roland Garros in 1998—beating No. 1 Pete Sampras along the way.

Going into the ATP event in Mallorca in 2002, he was looking to build momentum.

“I had just lost some first rounds and when the draw came out I thought it would be a good opportunity to gain confidence,” Delgado told news outlet Teller Report in 2020. “If I get solid, a 15-year-old is not going to hold me—but soon enough, from the beginning, the consistency of his shots caught my attention.”

Nadal had only played three matches before that, one at the Futures level and two at the Challenger level, but he broke through in his ATP debut, breaking serve five times to defeat the 25-year-old Paraguayan, 6-4, 6-4, in an hour and 23 minutes.

“I really wanted to go out there and play well,” Nadal said afterwards.

“I knew it was going to be difficult, but I held my game. I thought I played well, keeping the ball deep and maintaining the power.”

At 15 years and 10 months, Nadal was—at the time—the ninth man in the Open Era to win an ATP match before turning 16. Since then a 10th name has been added to that group in American Ryan Harrison, who achieved the feat at Houston in 2008.

Nadal lost in the second round of Mallorca that year to a No. 70-ranked Olivier Rochus, 6-2, 6-2, and would spend the next 11 months exclusively playing Challengers and Futures again—winning 60 of the 70 matches he played. He returned to ATP-level competition ranked No. 109 in Monte Carlo in April of 2003, then made his way into the Top 50 by August, and the rest is history.

YOUNGEST PLAYERS TO WIN AN ATP MATCH (Open Era):
Franco Davin (ARG) [15 years & 1 month at 1985 Buenos Aires]
Tommy Ho (USA) [15 years & 2 months at 1988 Rye Brook]
Jimmy Arias (USA) [15 years & 6 months at 1980 Palm Harbor]
Michael Chang (USA) [15 years & 6 months at 1987 US Open]

Bjorn Borg (SWE) [15 years & 10 months at 1972 Madrid]
Mats Wilander (SWE) [15 years & 10 months at 1980 Bastad]
Richard Gasquet (FRA) [15 years & 10 months at 2002 Monte Carlo]

Will Tyson Fury really retire from professional boxing?

Will Tyson Fury really retire from professional boxing?

This past Saturday in front of 94,000 screaming fans at Wembley Stadium, Tyson Fury defended his WBC and lineal heavyweight world championship against challenger Dillian Whyte. At times it seemed as if Whyte had the right idea in terms of trying to find ways to land to the body, but his execution left something to be desired. For the most part Fury made it look fairly easy, comfortably outboxing the challenger without much issue. Fury was exhibiting good footwork and movement, and he was effective when it came to neutralizing Whyte’s attacks. Things came to an end in round 6 when Fury nailed Whyte with a nice uppercut that sent him down hard. Whyte tried beating the count, but his legs were gone and the referee stopped the fight. Fury had successfully defended his heavyweight championship.

In the post fight interview, Fury continued to suggest that this may well have been his final bout inside the squared circle. In boxing it is not uncommon for high profile champions to change their minds after a retirement, with some boxers, like the great Sugar Ray Leonard for example, returning to action following several retirements throughout his career. Fury is skilled in the art of self promotion, so perhaps this is just a ploy. Or perhaps he is serious and will later change his mind and decide to return to boxing. Or maybe Fury is 100% serious, and perhaps his title defense against Whyte will indeed be the final fight in his professional boxing career. Should Fury continue with his career, however, there is one logical fight left that may entice him to hang around just a little longer, and that would be a fight against the winner of the upcoming rematch between unified IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and former two time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Will Tyson Fury really retire from professional boxing? Or does he have one big mega fight left against the winner of the Usyk vs Joshua rematch?

This edition of Rummy’s Corner will attempt to answer that question, while also providing a quick recap into a few of the more memorable fights during the career of The Gypsy King, Tyson Fury. For one fan’s opinion, please watch and enjoy the video. This is Rummy’s Corner.

Tennis: Youngest players to hit debut ATP top ten | see list.

Advertisements

It’s a very big day for Spanish tennis—not only is one of its biggest names celebrating an incredible anniversary, as Rafael Nadal has now spent 17 years in the Top 10, but two of its brightest rising stars, Carlos Alcaraz and Paula Badosa, break new ground.

After winning his third ATP title of the year (and fourth of his career) at the ATP 500 clay-court event in Barcelona, Alcaraz rises from No. 11 to No. 9 on the ATP rankings today, his Top 10 debut. And it’s a notable Top 10 debut to say the least, as he’s the ninth-youngest man in ATP rankings history to crack the elite.

YOUNGEST PLAYERS TO REACH TOP 10 IN ATP RANKINGS HISTORY:
Aaron Krickstein (USA) [17 years & 11 days on August 13, 1984]
Michael Chang (USA) [17 years, 3 months & 21 days on June 12, 1989]
Boris Becker (GER) [17 years, 7 months & 16 days on July 8, 1985]
Mats Wilander (SWE) [17 years, 10 months & 20 days on July 12, 1982]
Bjorn Borg (SWE) [17 years, 11 months & 28 days on June 3, 1974]
Andre Agassi (USA) [18 years, 1 month & 8 days on June 6, 1988]
Andrei Medvedev (UKR) [18 years, 9 months & 7 days on June 7, 1993]
Rafael Nadal (ESP) [18 years, 10 months & 22 days on April 25, 2005]
Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) [18 years, 11 months & 20 days on April 25, 2022]

Alcaraz isn’t just the youngest man to break into the Top 10 on the ATP rankings since Nadal achieved the feat exactly 17 years ago to this day, but the two Spaniards are the only two men since 1994 to crack that elite before turning 19.

Meanwhile, over on the WTA rankings, Badosa has become the 42nd woman—and fourth Spanish woman—ever to reach the Top 2, moving up from No. 3 to No. 2 after reaching the semifinals of the WTA 500 clay-court event in Stuttgart.

SPANISH WOMEN TO REACH TOP 2 IN WTA RANKINGS HISTORY:
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (reached No. 1 on February 6, 1995)
Conchita Martinez (reached No. 2 on October 30, 1995)
Garbine Muguruza (reached No. 1 on September 11, 2017)
Paula Badosa (reached No. 2 on April 25, 2022)

Sanchez-Vicario, Martinez, Muguruza and Badosa are actually the only Spanish women ever to reach the Top 5—only one other Spanish woman has reached the Top 10, with Carla Suarez Navarro going as high as No. 6 in 2016.

And just outside the Top 10, US Open champion Emma Raducanu continues her ascent towards the top, rising from No. 12 to a new career-high of No. 11 after reaching the quarterfinals in Stuttgart, where she fell to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

The 19-year-old Raducanu is currently the only British woman in the Top 100.

Rafael Nadal made his top ten debut, this day, 17-years back and still in the Elite.

It’s already been a record-breaking year for Rafael Nadal—he won his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, breaking a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to set the new men’s record for most Grand Slam titles in tennis history.

And today, he reaches another historic milestone: Nadal has now been ranked in the Top 10 of the ATP rankings non-stop for 17 years.

He first broke into the Top 10 as an 18-year-old on April 25th, 2005, rising from No. 11 to No. 7 after winning the first of his now-12 career titles in Barcelona. And despite all of his injuries over the years—he’s missed two Australian Opens, three Wimbledons and four US Opens since then—he’s never left the Top 10, not even for a week.

Today, a 35-year-old Nadal is ranked No. 4.

He’s held the record for longest Top 10 streak in ATP rankings history since November 2020, when he surpassed Jimmy Connors’ previous record of just over 15 years.

MOST CONSECUTIVE WEEKS IN TOP 10 IN ATP RANKINGS HISTORY (incl. this week):
866 weeks: Rafael Nadal (2005-present)
789 weeks: Jimmy Connors (1973-1988)
741 weeks: Roger Federer (2002-2016)
619 weeks: Ivan Lendl (1980-1992)
565 weeks: Pete Sampras (1990-2001)

Nadal’s weeks in the above chart do not include the 22 weeks the ATP rankings were frozen between March and August in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Given everything he’s already accomplished in 2022, Nadal’s Top 10 streak is showing no signs of coming to an end anytime soon, either.

He got off to a blistering 20-0 start to the year, winning his first three tournaments at the Melbourne Summer Set (ATP 250), the Australian Open (Grand Slam) and Acapulco (ATP 500) and then reaching the final of Indian Wells (Masters 1000) before finally suffering his first loss of the year at the hands of American Taylor Fritz.

He’s accumulated a tour-leading 3,350 ranking points so far in 2022, which would have already been enough to see him finish in the year-end Top 10 in each of the last seven years (he would’ve been year-end No. 11 with that much in 2014).

And he hasn’t even begun playing on his best surface yet—he’s expected to return from a rib injury lay-off in Madrid next week.

Not that he hasn’t been almost unbeatable on hard courts this year, too.

But back to the stat at hand, Nadal’s 17 straight years in the Top 10—to put just how long that is in perspective, it’s worth noting that when his streak began, Emma Raducanu was two years old, Carlos Alcaraz and Coco Gauff were one year old, YouTube was just two months old and Twitter didn’t even exist.

Man City 2 – 3 Liverpool: City dances out of FA Cup.

Advertisements

Liverpool blitzed Man City in a clinical first half display to seal their place in this season’s FA Cup final next month with a 3-2 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side at Wembley.

Liverpool’s route to goal to open the scoring in the 9th minute ought to have come as little surprise to City. Andy Robertson’s outswinging corner was met flush on the head by the rising Ibrahima Konate who powered his header beyond Zack Steffen.

The red end of Wembley was rocking, and they were sent into delirium again just seven minutes later. Steffen, handed the starting gloves in place of Ederson, dawled in possession just yards from his goalline before the opportunitistic Sadio Mane slid in to divert the ball into the net.

City were struggling to exert any pressure on the Liverpool backline and, with Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan watching on from the sidelines, Pep Guardiola would have been forgiven for turning to his bench.

There was no activity, however, and the game was ultimately placed beyond City’s reach two minutes before the interval. Liverpool moved the ball intricately on the edge of the penalty area and when Thiago moved the ball onto Mane, who sliced an exquisite volley beyond the diving Steffen.

However, City cut the deficit immediately after the restart. Gabriel Jesus was released in-behind by a clever Fernandinho pass before the Brazilian cut across goal and laid the ball onto Jack Grealish who sidefooted a left-footed effort beyond Alisson.

As he did in the league fixture last weekend, Jesus’ movement was causing Liverpool issues, and he almost grabbed a second for Guardiola’s men minutes later. Sterling turned provider this time, but the Brazilian was ushered wide after springing in-behind the Liverpool backline by the backtracking Virgil van Dijk before Alisson smothered the danger.

Third time is usually the charm, but Jesus was denied again after being slipped in behind by Grealish on 69 minutes. Alisson was quick off his line to deny the Brazilian as he attempted to curl his finish around his countryman.

Liverpool had the chance to add to their lead minutes later when Oleksandr Zinchenko made a mess of a cushioned header back to his goalkeeper. Mohamed Salah stole in, but the Egyptian could only lift his finish into the side netting.

City handed themselves a further lifeline in stoppage time when Bernardo Silva stroked the ball into the net after terrific work from substitute Riyad Mahrez on the right. However, it was too little, too late for City despite Fernandinho and Sterling’s best efforts.

Man City vs Liverpool player ratings

  1. Man City (4-3-3)
GK: Zack Steffen – 1/10 – Calamitous error to allow Mane to steal in and double Liverpool’s lead in the first half. The type of mistake that is unforgivable at this level.

RB: Joao Cancelo – 4/10 – Struggled against the quick feet of Diaz and was stifled offensively by Liverpool’s intense press.

RCB: John Stones – 5/10 – Slow to move the ball from defence, although he was inhibited by the lack of Rodri ahead of him.

LCB: Nathan Ake – 6/10 – Didn’t display the assurance with the ball which Laporte typically does, although he showed good recovery pace on a few ocassions.

LB: Oleksandr Zinchenko – 3/10 – Didn’t add much in possession, often struggling with his positioning on both sides of the ball.

CM: Fernandinho – 4/10 – Took him until the 56th minute to finally draw a booking, which is remarkable considering the rate he was flying into challenges.

CM: Bernardo Silva – 5/10 – Didn’t display his qualities on the ball as much as he usually does. Wasn’t afraid to snap in for a challenge as City chased shadows in the first half.

CM: Phil Foden – 3/10 – His passing was decidedly off, switching between a midfield and wide left role.

RW: Gabriel Jesus – 8/10 – His penetrative runs caused Liverpool issues in the second half and he ought to have done better with the pass from Grealish. Suits playing against Klopp’s high defensive line.

ST: Jack Grealish – 6/10 – Looked an awkward fit as part of the City frontline to start the game. Improved as the match wore on.

LW: Raheem Sterling – 5/10 – Didn’t have many opportunities to stretch his legs. Often forced to come infield in search of the ball.

SUB: Riyad Mahrez (82′ for Jesus) – 6/10 – Left Robertson for dead to tee up Bernardo Silva in stoppage time.

  1. Liverpool (4-3-3):
GK: Alisson – 6/10 – Crucial save to deny Jesus late in the second half, underlining his importance for Liverpool.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6/10 – Considering much of the coverage around the England international is that he seemingly can’t defend, worth underlining that he won the majority of his duels.

RCB: Ibrahima Konate – 7/10 – Bullied Ake in the air to open the scoring for the Reds and looked an unmovable object all afternoon.

LCB: Virgil van Dijk – 7/10 – Displayed great recovery pace to push Jesus wide as he raced through on goal in the second half. Heroic block in stoppage time to deny Fernandinho an equaliser.

LB: Andy Robertson – 4/10 – Careless pass inside led to the turnover which City exploited after the interval, but he added great value going forward for Klopp’s men. Beaten too easily by Mahrez in stoppage time.

CM: Fabinho – 6/10 – Booked in the first half which curbed his aggressive instincts, but his positioning was usually immaculate to compensate.

CM: Thiago Alcantara – 9/10 – Played with immense poise in midfield, constantly dropping into pockets to circumnavigate the City press. Great link-up play with Alexander-Arnold to supply Mane’s second goal of the afternoon.

CM: Naby Keita – 8/10 – Underlined his growing importance to Liverpool, closing City’s midfielders down instantly and helping his side to pin City into the middle third.

RW: Mohamed Salah – 3/10 – A very quiet afternoon, which has characterised his form recently. Had to wait 71 minutes for a meaningful sighting at goal.

ST: Sadio Mane – 9/10 – A performance full of conviction. Showed tremendous opportunism to close down a dawdling Steffen, before displaying excellent technique on his volley to add to Liverpool’s lead.

LW: Luis Diaz – 8/10 – Played as if he was down the park with his friends. A gorgeous array of tricks, flicks and powerful running.

SUB: Jordan Henderson (73′ for Keita) – N/A

SUB: Diogo Jota (83′ for Mane) – N/A

SUB: Roberto Firmino (83′ for Diaz) – N/A

SUB: Curtis Jones (87′ for Thiago) – N/A
