WWE started the feud between Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in late January once Rousey returned and won the Women’s Royal Rumble match to earn a championship match at WrestleMania. Rousey decided to challenge Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Title.
Rousey was the heavy favorite to win the title at WrestleMania 38 Saturday, but WWE decided to have Flair go over. The match finish saw Rousey tap out Flair with an armbar, but the referee was down. When Rousey got the referee up, Flair connected with a big boot to retain the title. With such a finish, a rematch is expected.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE plans on having Flair and Rousey extend their feud. Meltzer wrote, “the idea is for this to be a long-term program and thus the belief was Flair had to win the first match, even if Flair got the better of Rousey as well in the angles leading up to it.”
Although WWE has yet to announce when the rematch will take place, Rousey is advertised to work WrestleMania Backlash on May 8th.
