It has been revealed that José Mourinho’s Tottenham contract does not include an early break clause, with the club in the midst of a torrid run of form.

Spurs were condemned to their seventh Premier League defeat of the season at Manchester City on Saturday, beaten 3-0 by Pep Guardiola’s table-topping side.

The Lilywhites, who were top of the pile earlier on this season, currently find themselves ninth in the Premier League and knocked out of the FA Cup by Everton. Understandably, the pressure has increased on their Portuguese coach in recent weeks.

While Spurs are struggling for results at the moment, concerns over their negative style of play have led to increased frustration with the job the 58-year-old is doing.

His current contract in north London is due to run until June 2023 and according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, there is no clause whereby the club’s hierarchy can part ways with Mourinho early unless he is sacked.

Sacking the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss would mean paying him off, and given it’s rumoured he is on a very lucrative £15m-a-year contract, at a time like this – without the matchday revenue Spurs would earn under normal circumstances – Daniel Levy is likely to be even more reluctant to let his manager go.

So like him or loathe him Spurs fans, it looks like you’re stuck with him for the time being at least.
