Nollywood actress escapes kidnapper’s den

Nollywood actress, Ibiwari Etuk took to social media to share her ordeal in the hands of kidnappers.Ibiwari stated that she was kidnapped in January, but thankfully regained her freedom

In her words;”On the 6th, 7th and 8th of January 2020, I walked through the valley of the shadow of death but God didn’t abandon me, he came through for me. That I came out alive and unhurt is a testimony. All I could do in those most terrifying days was plead for my life to those 4 boys of the underworld while praying to God to confuse them enough not to cause me bodily harm.

“I lost all my money since my 3 ATMs were in my car when I was taken with the car but I didn’t care my life was most important. I was dehydrated and starved even though they offered me food and water I refused for fear of passing out. I couldn’t sleep because of the terrifying sounds I hear right inside the bush both at night and in the day time notwithstanding the constant threat of being killed if the ransom they asked for wasn’t paid.

“I cried until my eyes dried out, why are some HUMANS wicked? Why?
I still freak out a little when it’s dark but I am fighting it with the help of the people around me. I am a strong woman not because I am literally strong but because I am still here and pushing on.“So many went through this process and never came out alive to tell the tale.
Thank you, lord for everything indeed it ENDED IN PRAISE to your glory
I will forever worship and be grateful to you…”

Imo: APC chieftain beaten to his early grave

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress APC, Damian Ali, was allegedly beaten to death by the owner of a pharmaceutical store in Owerri, Imo State.

Confirming the incident, the state police command spokesperson, SP Orlando Ikeokwu, said the deceased was attacked by the owner of a pharmacy and his staff when he tried parking his vehicle in front of their outfit situated at Umuguma Roundabout.

Late Ali who was not planning to buy an item from the pharmacy, tried to park his vehicle and upon inquiry, he informed the pharmacy workers that he wanted to do something nearby. The refusal of the pharmacy worker to allow him park his vehicle, led to an argument which degenerated into a fight.

Damian was said to have slumped at the scene of the incident and was later confirmed dead.

Ikeokwu said that the suspect reported himself to the police, adding that the state commissioner of police, Olaniyi Fafowora, had ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.

Coronavirus: WHO charged experts to outbreak-city

A team of experts headed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is flying from Beijing to Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province on Monday to help assess the latest coronavirus outbreak.

The death toll of 97 on Sunday was the largest in a single day since the outbreak was detected in December. It has been linked to a market selling animals in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province.

The epidemic has caused huge disruptions in China with usually teeming cities becoming virtual ghost towns during the past two weeks as Communist Party rulers ordered lockdowns, canceled flights and closed factories and schools.

China’s central bank has taken a raft of steps to support the economy, including reducing interest rates and flushing the market with liquidity.

From Monday, it will provide special funds for banks to re-lend to businesses combating the virus.

$500m: NTA will compete with CNN

Minister of information, Lai Mohammed, says the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) will compete with the likes of Cable News Network (CNN) if the $500 million loan his ministry is seeking gets approved.

According to The Guardian, the minister made the statement when he appeared before the senate committee on local and foreign loans.

The $500 million is part of the $30 billion loan President Muhammadu Buhari is asking the national assembly to approve.

Mohammed said NTA can only achieve this feat when it is digitised, and that there is already manpower in place.

“If this project is approved, there will be more visibility for our people in the music, fashion and film industries,” he said.

“In 2014, we made $23 million from music alone and about $53 million in 2019 and we are looking forward to making $83 million in 2025.

“You can imagine the kind of growth we will have if only we digitise all the NTA stations in the country.”

The minister also said the creative industry is a major employer of the youth.

“Apart from agriculture, which is the largest employer of labour in Nigeria, especially the youths, the next largest employer of labour is the creative industry,” he said.

“The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2006 gave June 17, 2015, as the deadline for all members of the organisation to migrate from analogue to digital.

“Regrettably, we were unable to meet the deadline along-side most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the deadline was moved to 2017, which was not reliable and today the target is June 17, 2020.”

Coronavirus: Experts say it is transferable during ‘Incubation’

A Chinese epidemiologist, Zhong Nanshan co-authored an article that predicted the incubation period of the new coronavirus that has killed more than 900 people in China to be as long as 24 days.

Zhong, who is famed for his work managing the 2003 SARS outbreak and was appointed a top advisor for this crisis, wrote that the incubation could be as short as zero days or long as 24 – ten days longer than previously believed.

The article, which is still awaiting peer review, indicates that the mean incubation period is three days, Hong Kong’s Now News reports.

Quarantine provisions for those suspected of carrying the infection currently extend 14 days, during which time the carrier may not exhibit symptoms.

Some experts have suggested that the virus can be transmitted during this asymptomatic incubation, although others have cast doubt on this.

Coronavirus: Chinese firms seek loan

More than 300 Chinese firms including Meituan Dianping, China’s largest food delivery company, and smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp are seeking bank loans totaling at least 57.4 billion yuan ($8.2 billion) to soften the impact of the coronavirus.

The firms were either involved in the control of the epidemic or had been hardest hit, the sources told Reuters on Monday.

China is struggling to contain the epidemic, which has killed more than 900 people, the vast majority on the mainland, and infected over 40,000 people.

The companies seeking loans in the Chinese capital are likely to get fast-track approvals and preferential rates, said the sources, who received copies of two lists of company names sent to banks in Beijing by the city government’s finance bureau.

There are no official data so far showing the total loans Chinese companies are seeking nationwide to weather the outbreak.

The two lists also contained the size of loans sought by the firms, which include pharmaceutical firms and restaurants. The bureau had earlier said firms seeking financial support could ask for its help.

“Banks will have the final say on lending decisions,” one of the sources said. “The interest rates are likely to be on par with those offered to banks’ top clients.”

‘Sick’ Femi Fani-Kayode blast Amaechi

Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted to the allegation made by Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation that he stole two billion during his time as minister.

Earlier, Rotimi Amaechi had alleged during an interview on Channels Television some time ago and the video of the interview resurfaced online during the weekend. Fani-Kayode however retorted, calling Amaechi ‘sick’ for accusing him of embezzling the said amount during his time as a Minister.

Amaechi claimed that Fani-Kayode ran away with N2 billion given to him by the then Rivers State government to fix a deplorable Port Harcourt Airport runway. He had said: “Fani-Kayode when he was Minister of Aviation, Dr. Peter Odili’s government gave him N2 billion to fix the runway. The runway was closed for two years and Fani-Kayode left with the money”.

However, Fani-Kayode on Sunday night, while sharing the video on his Twitter page insisted that the airport was re-built and fully paid for by him as Minister.

The former Minister charged those in doubt of his defence to ask Julius Berger construction company for details of the contract.

He maintained that the allegation by the current Minister of Transportation was false, adding that the runway was commissioned shortly after he left office and was opened to public use.

“The runway at Port Harcourt Int. Airport was re-built & fully paid for by me when I was Min. of Aviation.

FFK | Amaechi

“If anyone has any doubts about that they should ask Julius Berger who were the contractors. The runway was commissioned & the airport opened shortly after we left office.

“Those who falsely asserted on @channelstv two years ago that I did not build the runway and that I ran away with the 3 billion naira that was used to build it are sick,” he tweeted.

Deregister more political parties – APC tells INEC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to de-register more political parties to sanitise Nigeria’s electoral system.

Mr Nwachukwu Eze, the Chairman of Ebonyi Chapter of APC made the call in an interview on Monday in Abakaliki.

Eze said that the de-registration process should continue until the country has a maximum of six political parties to ensure that the electoral space was not ‘unnecessarily congested’.

“We applaud INEC for doing the needful as such de-registration had been overdue.

“We had a situation where few individuals or family members put-up papers and register with INEC but do not exist in states or anywhere in the country.

“They do not have offices, membership bases, structures and one person in most cases, is the chairman, secretary and other members of the executive.

“INEC has presently decided to sanitise the system and this can be likened to the deleting of unwanted files in a computer for it to have enough storage space,” he said.

The chairman said that such de-registration would sanitise the electoral process, especially by eliminating complexities recorded during voting.

“This decision will make logos of political parties appear bold on ballot papers and make voters have enough space to thumb-print.

“When we have over 90 political parties on a ballot paper, the illiterate voters would be confused on how to thumb-print,” he said.

He urged INEC not to be distracted by complaints over the de-registration, advising it to ‘shut its ears’.

“There is no case of victimisation in the decision as the affected parties know they are not in existence.

“A situation where some parties will poll over 10million votes in a general election, while others will not have up to 1, 000 votes in a country of over 120million people is appalling.

“INEC has an assemblage of the best lawyers in the country either as staff or consultants and its reputation will make it shun acts that will be subjudice before the court.

“There is no order restraining INEC from implementing the decision and it is only when such is obtained that the issue of subjudice will arise,” he said.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had on Thursday announced de-registration of 74 political parties for failing to meet Constitutional requirements for them to exist as political parties in the country.

That Buhari failed, isn’t an agreement from all NEF Board of trustees – Tsav

it is one sided, not from the full house

Former Lagos Commissioner of Police and member of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) Board of Trustees, Abubakar Tsav, has decried the statement issued by some of the forum members on President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, saying the board was not aware of the statement.

Tsav spoke on Monday in Makurdi, that the statement was not a “unanimous decision of entire NEF membership.” N.Rs learnt

According to him, members of the board of trustees were not invited for the meeting where the decision was taken.

A Professor Ango Abdullahi-led NEFmeeting on Sunday had declared that the Buhari administration has failed to tackle insecurity and improve the economy.

Tsav, however, said the verdict was one-sided and not a unanimous decision.

According to him, he has not received any invitation for the NEF meetings for a very long time, adding that the last meeting he attended was when Paul Unongu was removed as NEF Chairman.

His words: “I am a member of the Board of Trustees of NEF, but for a very long time now, I have not been invited to NEF meetings.

“The last meeting I attended was when Wantaregh Paul I. Unongu was removed as NEF Chairman. I don’t know if the situation applies to me alone or to all other Board of Trustees members.

“The decision to discredit President Buhari may be one-sided and may not be a unanimous decision of entire NEF membership.

“All decision-making by NEF should involve all Board of Trustees members. It should be all-inclusive.”

Upadte: Abubakar, Adoke released on bail

Immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), has been granted bail on fresh money laundering charges.

He was granted bail by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja, earlier today.

The second defendant, Aliyu Abubakar, was also granted bail.

Justice Binta Nyako imposed the same terms and conditions of the bail they were earlier granted by Justice Idris Kutigi of the Gwagwalada Division of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on January 30.

Justice Kutigi had granted each of the men N50m bail with a surety, each.

Adopting the same conditions on Monday, Justice Nyako directed that the defendants should deposit their passport with the FCT High Court.

Defence lawyers – Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Mr. Olalekan Ojo(SAN), who said their clients had already met the bail conditions, pleaded with the court to make a specific order barring the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from re-arresting them once the release order is served on the commission.

The judge said such order would not be necessary as there would be no basis for their rearrest or continued detention once the court’s release order is served.

Adoke and Abubakar had earlier pleaded not guilty to the seven counts of making payments of dollar equivalent of about N600m in violation of money laundering law.

The prosecution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, alleged that they committed the offences in September 2013.

The judge fixed April 1 and 2 for trial, The Punch reported.

NEF: Buhari has failed Nigeria

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) led by Professor Ango Abdullahi has risen a verdict on Sunday, that the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigeria during its meeting in Zaria.

The forum lamented on how President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has failed to tackle insecurity and improve the economy. The group alleged that the administration appeared helpless in finding solutions to insecurity as well as poverty in the country.

Addressing Journalists shortly after the meeting convened by the chairman of the forum, Professor Ango Abdullahi, the forum’s Director, Advocacy and Engagements of NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmad, said poverty, particularly in the North and massive social security have worsened under Buhari’s administration.

In attendance at the meeting were: Abdullahi, former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alamin Daggash (retd); Secretary of the Coalition of Northern Groups, Abdullahi Usman and Ambassador Yahaya Kwande; Deputy National Chairman of NEF, Alhaji Bello Kirfi (Wazirin Bauchi), DIG Labaran Wurno, Alhaji Yakubu Shehu and former MD, defunct Bank of the North, Hajiya Amina Yahaya, among others.

Baba-Ahmed stated categorically that NEF had before the 2019 elections warned Nigerians that Buhari lacked the will, competence and commitment to lead the country into a secure and prosperous future.

While noting that the relationship between insecurity and poverty is fundamental, the Northern Elders said, the current administration does not appear to have any idea on what will provide relief or solution.

Speaking on the 2023 Presidential election, the Forum said the north will only support candidate who can find solutions to problems bedevilling the region.

According to Dr. Baba-Ahmed: “Northern Elders Forum has refrained from comments on major developments relating to management of national security and governance because it is convinced that these are times which require the highest levels of responsibility and circumspection in the manner elders and leaders in the nation contribute to the search for solutions to the multiple problems which face the nation.

“It has become necessary and appropriate, however, to make public, the position of the Forum on important matters that affect the manner Nigerians live, and the future we must address.

“The Forum regrets that by any standard of judgement, the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has failed the nation in the vital area of improving its security. Poverty, particularly in the North, and massive social security have worsened under this administration. The relationship between insecurity and poverty is fundamental, but the administration does not appear to have any idea on what will provide relief or solution.

“It gives the Forum no pleasure to say that it had warned Nigerians that President Buhari lacked the will, the competence and commitment to lead it into a secure and prosperous future before the 2019 elections.

“It is shocking that in spite of unprecedented consensus among Nigerians that the administration requires a new resolve, approach and leadership in the fight against the nation’s multiple security challenges, President Buhari appears either totally isolated or in deep denial over the result of his failures to secure Nigerians.

“With this type of mind set, it is difficult to see how President Buhari can accept the challenge to radically improve his handling of our security situation. Nonetheless, we believe that Nigerians must continue to raise our voices and organize through all legitimate means to demand that the administration addresses major failings in his perception of our situation and his response to our demands for our rights to security.

I’d rather be locked up in Kuje prison than EFCC prison

…Adoke did not run away,

…He went for his masters degree abroad

Mohammed Adoke, Nigeria’s ex-Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, (SAN), on Monday, said he preferred to be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Mike Ozekhome (SAN), spoke on Adoke’s behalf shortly after he was arraigned on fresh money laundering charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

Adoke was arraigned alongside Aliyu Abubakar, who was accused of paying dollar equivalent of N300m in Adoke’s account in September 2013 in violation of the Money Laundering Act.

Ozekhome was arguing his client’s bail application when he noted that his client was produced in court by the EFCC from the Federal Medical Centre near Jabi, Abuja, where he had been admitted for treatment.

After the defendants took their pleas, the prosecuting counsel, Bala Sanga, urged the court to remand them in the custody of the EFCC pending when their bail applications would be heard and determined. NobleReporters learnt

The defence lawyers immediately noted that they already filed their bail applications and had been responded to by the prosecution.

Ozekhome appealed to the the court to grant bail to Adoke in liberal and affordable terms and conditions, saying that his client would prefer to be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre, instead of the custody of the EFCC.

“The first defendant voluntarily returned to the country. There is his statement attached to show that he returned to the country voluntarily. He did not run away. We have attached an exhibit to show that he went for his Masters’ study abroad.

Mohammed Adoke, Nigeria’s ex-Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, (SAN)

“We have deposed to the affidavit about his health conditions. The prosecution themselves brought him to court from the Federal Medical Centre near Jabib in Abuja, this morning. We also plead that he be taken to the Kuje Correction Centre, a euphemism for Kuje prison pending when he meets his bail conditions to avoid the mental psychological strictures he goes through in the custody of the EFCC.

“My lord we pray that he be granted bail in liberal and affordable terms and conditions so that he can take care of himself. The law says, ‘come and stand trial’, it did not say ‘come and sit trial or come and prostate trial. My lord as you can see, the first defendant who is less than 60 is already bent with age,” he said.

Isco Is Back & the Key Man for Real Madrid Moving Forward

As the Real Madrid players walked off the pitch after a 4-1 away win at CA Osasuna, it was very obvious as to who had run the show.

The Spain international was absolutely phenomenal for Madrid, orchestrating the game in the number 10 role and also grabbing himself a goal. The silky Spaniard bore the brunt lot of criticism at the start of the season, and was regularly scapegoated by Madrid fans – especially following a defeat at the hands of RCD Mallorca back in October.

However, his performance on Sunday showcases just how good Isco can be, and should he continue playing like this, he could make this season a sensational one for Los Blancos.

Now let’s rewind back to Madrid’s Champions League final win over Juventus in 2017. The 27-year-old was simply mesmeric, running and dominating the game as they won the game 4-1. Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a brace, but Isco was the star of the show.

UEFA Champions League”Juventus FC v Real Madrid”
Isco’s best performances this season have come in the big games. At home to PSG, away to Barcelona and against Valencia in the Supercup semi-final. When Madrid really need him, he more often than not shows up.

There is still a hint of inconsistency in his game, especially in the smaller fixtures. However, that is easily sorted, and should he continue performing in the big games, then who really cares?

But how has this transformation happened? What has changed from the start of the season to around January for Isco to find some of his best form?

It’s simple really.
Isco’s best form for Madrid came during Zinedine Zidane’s first spell at the club, where they won three Champions Leagues in a row. The Frenchman is a huge fan of the playmaker, and his system was perfect for him.

They played a diamond formation with Isco in the number 10 role behind Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, and it worked like a charm.

Madrid started this season in a 4-3-3, with Isco either occupying the bench or playing in an unfamiliar wing role. His performances were poor, and as expected, Twitter ‘fans’ swarmed to criticise him and demand that he be sold.

Cristiano Ronaldo
But in recent months, Zidane has returned to his favoured diamond formation, with Isco playing in the hole behind the striker.

His improved form has coincided with the switch in formation, and he is slowly returning to his best.

On his day, he is arguably the best playmaker in the world. His dribbling ability is second to none, and he can create a bit of magic out of absolutely nothing.

But as previously mentioned, he may need to add a little bit more consistency to his game.

Even his manager agrees. Speaking after the game, Zidane said: “He’s a player that always gives everything when he plays. He’s a good footballer. I like the way he plays. He’s technical and skilful. He’s very important for us.

“He had a brilliant game like everyone else, but above all I am happy about his goal, because he needs to score more goals.”

He’s right. Isco is an unbelievable player, and should be scoring more goals.

Regardless, Madrid fans and Zidane will be delighted with his performances and improved form. He is a wonderful playmaker and potentially the man to make the difference in the big games.

With Madrid competing in the Champions League and La Liga, they will be looking to their stars to step and and push them across the line on both fronts. Isco could be just that man, and there is no doubt that he is has all the quality to do so.
