G.O, Sotitobire miracle centre remanded in prison over missing child in Ondo

The General Overseer of Sotitobire Miracle Center, Babatunde Alfa and six others have been remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in Olokuta, after being arraigned before an Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure.

The 7 suspects arraigned before the court on six counts including felony and conspiracy to kidnap in the case of a missing one-year-old boy, all denied the allegation.

Effort of the defendants’ counsel, Olusola Oke to get bail for his clients was futile as Director of Public Prosecution in the state, Grace Olowoporoku stated that he filed multiple bail applications that were difficult to respond to.

Justice Adedun Odusola adjourned the case till March 16, 2020 after the court session on Thursday February 6.

France fined Apple over slow software – iPhone users

France’s consumer watchdog said Friday that Apple had agreed to pay 25 million euros ($27.4 million) for failing to tell iPhone users that software updates could slow down older devices.

The scandal erupted in December 2017, when the US tech giant admitted that its most recent iOS software was slowing the performance of older telephones whose battery life was deteriorating.

Critics accused the firm of surreptitiously forcing users to buy phones sooner than necessary, and the outcry forced Apple to upgrade its software and offer steep discounts on battery replacements.

French prosecutors opened an inquiry in January 2018 at the request of the Halt Planned Obsolescence (HOP) association.

“IPhone owners were not informed that installing iOS updates (10.2.1 and 11.2) could slow down their devices,” the DGCCRF anti-fraud agency said in a statement.

“This is a historic victory against scandalous ready-to-rubbish practices, for consumers as well as the environment,” HOP co-founders Laetitia Vasseur and Samuel Sauvage said, adding that they will consider filing claims for additional damages for iPhone clients.

Apple said it welcomed the accord with the DGCCRF, which will allow it to avoid a potentially embarrassing public trial.

“Our goal has always been to create secure products appreciated by our clients, and making iPhones that last as long as possible is an important part of that.”

Don’t allow Executives, Legislatures intimidate you – Wike tells the Judiciary

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on the Judiciary to always dispense justice according to the law, pointing out that the judiciary must not allow itself to be intimidated by other arms of government.

This is according to a statement by the governor’s special media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, on Thursday at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike noted that the Judiciary remains vital to the sustenance of democracy.

He said, “You are the ones to decide what is right or wrong. Never allow anyone to intimidate you. The moment you take the oath of office, dispense justice according to the law.

“People are afraid to dispense justice because of intimidation. In some cases, they use the EFCC to intimidate judges. Whether or not you do your work, they will come after you. Without the Judiciary, there will be no democracy “.

Governor Wike said that the Executive and Legislative Arms of Government are far more corrupt than the Judiciary, but they are the arms that criticise the Judiciary all the time.

“The most corrupt arms of Government are the Executive and Legislative Arms. When they say that the Judiciary is corrupt, I laugh. The pressure on the Judiciary is from the Executive and Legislative Arms. The people who initiate the process are the ones who are corrupt “, he said.

Governor Wike regretted that the judges have allowed themselves to be boxed to a corner by the Executive and the Legislative Arms, each time they fail to rise up to the occasion.

He said, “The Judiciary must stand up to say that enough is enough. If you don’t stand up, then this democracy is in danger.”

The Governor said as a result of ‘calculated intimidation’, the Judiciary is afraid to relate with state governments to get the support that will enhance the administration of justice.

He noted that all security agencies, especially the military, and the Police regularly demand and get regular financial and logistics support from state governments, but people the Judiciary from doing the same.

“The military and police and other security agencies come here regularly to collect financial support. If I tell you what the Rivers State Government spends on the security agencies, you will be shocked.

“State Governments must support the administration of justice,” he said.

Speaking further, the Rivers State Governor called on the President Court of Appeal to increase the number of judges in the Port Harcourt Division because it is second only to the Lagos Division in terms of volume of cases.

He congratulated the retiring President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, for attaining the retirement age.

Governor Wike also commended her for the contributions she has made to the growth of the Court.

Earlier, Justice Bulkachuwa said she was in Rivers State as part of the process for her to bow out of the Court, having reached the retirement age of 70 years.

She commended the Rivers State Governor for the upgrade and remodeling of befitting accommodation for Court of Appeal Justices of the Port Harcourt Division.

Okada/Keke Ban: Di’ja frown, slam Lagos government

Di’ja a few days ago reacted to the Okada and Kekenapep ban calling for the regulation and not the eradication of the means of transport.

“I understand Okada can be a nuisance but it also came into existence (as is) due to the traffic situation of Lagos. I don’t think one month was enough grace period for such a change.

We should focus on regulating PROPERLY and CONSISTENTLY not banning completely. People don’t depend on the government, they depend on themselves. There are so many pros and cons to all of this. Can we talk about it though?

However, with the recent cases of violence recorded, Di’ja reacted again by taking to her Twitter page to slam the Lagos State governor, for seizing and damaging bikes in the state.

According to her, the riders are desperate and trying to earn money to feed their families.

She also expressed sadness in the acts of racism and tribalism that citizens have been exhibiting in the past few days.

Just in: Singer Iyanya arraigned for car theft

The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) Ikoyi, Lagos, has charged popular Nigerian singer Iyanya, for alleged car theft.

According to The Nation, Iyanya was arraigned for the offence on February 4, 2020 before Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile of an Igbosere High Court, Lagos.

The police filed the one-count charge marked LD/9024c/2019, against the singer on March 15, 2019.

Iyanya failed to appear in court for arraignment, despite allegedly being served with the charge and hearing notice, following which the arraignment was adjourned six times.

At the last adjournment, Justice Okikiolu-Ighile threatened to invoke the power of the court to ensure Iyanya’s attendance to take his plea.

The ‘Kurukere’ singer appeared before the judge on February 4, 2020, following which the charge was read to him.

Prosecution counsel, Mr. Chukwu Agwu, a Superintendent of Police (SP), alleged that Iyanya committed the offence sometimes in September 2018.

The court heard that the defendant allegedly dishonestly converted to his use or of another person, a Black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked MAVINIY, with Chassis and Engine numbers JTEBX7FJ7EK165480 and 2TR1385954.

Agwu told the court that said vehicle belongs to ‘The Temple Management Company Ltd, represented by a lawyer, Ayodeji Olomojobi.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, was contrary to Sections 278(1) (b), 279(1)(2) and punishable under Section 285(10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Iyanya pleaded not guilty.

Agwu prayed the court to remand the defendant in the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) custody, pending the hearing and determination of his bail application.

But Iyanya’s counsel, Mr Williams A., opposed him. He prayed the court to release the musician to him and undertook to produce him in court on the next adjournment.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile granted the defence counsel’s prayer and released him to his counsel. She adjourned till February 27 and March 17, for ruling on Iyanya’s bail application and commencement of trial.

Lassa fever in 27 Nigerian states – Minister of Health

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire on Thursday February 6 announced that the Lassa Fever epidemic has been confirmed in 27 states of the federation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day seminar for 36 State Health Commissioners’ organised by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum in Abuja, the Minister disclosed that the Lassa Fever epidemic has also claimed the lives of two doctors.

Ehanire also revealed that the Nigerian government is working with a German research firm to develop a vaccine for the virus, as pointed out that government cannot curb the spread of the disease alone.

He said;

”I thank you all at this point for commendation the federal ministry of health has received in its efforts to contain the outbreak of Lassa fever which has moved to about 27 states as at last count. And we are also in collaboration to ensure that the Coronavirus does not enter Nigeria

”The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and other services are coordinating the government response to control the outbreak and also prevent importation, progress is being made on developing a vaccine against Lassa fever with the help of a German medical research firm.”

Ehanire also urged all state health commissioners to speak with their various governors and also make them see the importance of secondary healthcare system.

He added;

”The temptation is to go for large visible hospital complexes, which are very impressive. But forget that down below, the needs there are not met, these large hospitals can convey about six, five general hospitals.

”We know that our country’s health system does not yet provide the level of quality of service required to meet the population.

”There is a need to have a sound primary healthcare system with a secondary PHCs including a functional general hospital in at least one in every LGA, there can be many more though.

”But I have always believed that private sectors always have a role to play here, states cannot meet this responsibility alone.”

leicester keen on signing Hakan Çalhanoğlu from ac milan

Leicester City have not given up hope of securing a deal for Milan midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu, with Brendan Rodgers’ side ‘closely following’ his situation in Italy.

The Foxes had been heavily linked with a move for the Turkey international during the January transfer window, but they were unable to reach an agreement with the Rossoneri for his sale.

Nevertheless, there’s a strong probability Çalhanoğlu will leave in the summer, by which point he’ll have a year left on his contract at San Siro.

Hakan Calhanoglu
Çalhanoğlu is said to be against the idea of joining an English team, though that hasn’t curbed Leicester’s interest, with CalcioMercato claiming they continue to ‘follow him closely’.

It’s understood Milan placed a €20m price-tag on the playmaker’s head last month, as they look to start turning a profit after posting their biggest ever financial losses during the autumn.

The report also says the Foxes are ‘always’ chasing his services, suggesting this could become a strung out transfer saga.

Leicester appear to want Çalhanoğlu far more than he wants them. However, it’s clear he wants to jump ship as Milan’s struggles persist, with the Rossoneri currently in eighth place in Serie A following a turbulent campaign.

The Foxes will likely return with a bid once the season ends, given his asking price will gradually decrease between now and the summer if he doesn’t sign a new contract.

At that point, Leicester will have the task of convincing Çalhanoğlu a switch to the King Power Stadium is worthwhile – they may have the pull of Champions League football by then.

Leicester’s board are notoriously difficult to negotiate with, the club hierarchy refusing to submit to the demands of their counterparts, as demonstrated by Harry Maguire’s long and drawn-out move to Manchester United.

That makes it difficult to see contract talks going smoothly between Leicester and Çalhanoğlu, who isn’t short of options as several European clubs aim to win the race for his signature

Chelsea Aims André Onana As Kepa’s Replacement

Chelsea have been boosted in their hunt for a new number one goalkeeper to replace the struggling Kepa Arrizabalaga, with suggestions that highly rated Ajax stopper André Onana is interested in joining the club.

Chelsea paid a word record fee of £71.6m for Kepa in 2018, but the Spaniard’s form has been poor this season and he was benched by manager Frank Lampard for the 2-2 draw against Leicester at the weekend in favour of veteran deputy Willy Caballero.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Lampard was rumoured in mid-December to have asked Chelsea officials to scout him a new goalkeeper, with the 41-year-old thought to be generally unimpressed by Kepa following a number of mistakes in recent months.

Onana – who has risen to prominence as a key part of an impressive young Ajax side – seemingly considers it an opportunity, and Goal has reported that Chelsea is the Cameroon international’s ‘preferred destination’ this summer.

The 23-year-old is said to think that the Premier League would be ‘ideal’ and sees the uncertainty surrounding Kepa at Stamford Bridge as an opportunity to make his ambition to play in England a reality.

The Daily Mail carries a similar story on Onana and his eye on Chelsea. The newspaper also notes that he would be interested in joining Tottenham, but Chelsea remains his preference.

Andre Onana
Onana has also been linked with Barcelona, where he previously spent five years in the youth ranks after being spotted at Samuel Eto’o’s academy in Cameroon. It is said that Ajax might prefer to deal with Barça owing to their historic relationship, but goalkeeper is far from a priority at Camp Nou.

Elsewhere, Chelsea have recently been linked with Burnley’s Nick Pope to replace Kepa, as well as Sheffield United loanee Dean Henderson.

While Goal says that no decision has been made on whether Kepa will definitely be cut loose, it is explained that a final decision on his future will be made by technical adviser Petr Cech and head of goalkeeping Christophe Lollichon, in conjunction with Lampard.

Spurs&Arsenal Eyes Liverpool’s Lallana On Free Transfer

Arsenal & Spurs Among Clubs Eyeing Free Transfer for Liverpool Midfielder Adam Lallana…

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is the subject of interest from four Premier League clubs as his time at Anfield begins to wind down, with Leicester, Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham all said to be ‘monitoring’ the 31-year-old’s situation.

Lallana is out of contract at Liverpool in June, making him available as a free agent ahead of next season, and is considered likely to weigh up his options once the campaign finishes.

Adam Lallana
The Daily Telegraph writes that ‘no formal discussions’ have taken place as of yet, with Lallana very much focused on his role, albeit a fringe one, in Liverpool’s hunt for trophies.

But the newspaper explains that signing an extension on Merseyside is unlikely and that Leicester, Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham are the club keeping an eye on developments.

The Foxes, Gunners and Spurs in particular could offer Lallana the chance to stay near the top of the table and is suggested that the player will basically ‘have his pick’ of the best on offer.

Leicester are billed as a very realistic option. The 2015/16 surprise champions have broken back into the upper echelons of the Premier League table this season and Lallana’s relationship with Brendan Rodgers, the man who signed him for Liverpool in 2015, could be a factor.

Brendan Rodgers,Adam Lallana
Leicester also play an attractive brand of football and are likely to be able to offer Champions League football, something which may put them ahead of both Arsenal and Tottenham.

West Ham, meanwhile, are fighting simply to stay in the Premier League after slipping into the relegation zone in the latest round of fixtures. Yet despite a lack of competitiveness compared to others, a more guaranteed first-team role would be easier to come by in east London.

Lallana was arguably Liverpool’s best creative player when he first joined the club and had a strong 2016/17 campaign, before hamstring problems ravaged his 2017/18 season.

Cruelly for Lallana, it was during his long-term absences that Jurgen Klopp’s project began to really take off and by the time he returned to fitness he had been somewhat left him behind.

These days very much a back-up, he started only five Premier League games in 2018/19 and has been involved only three times from the start in the league so far in 2019/20.
